I think LotRo has some serious lacking gameplay elements that keep it from being a great game as you so put it.  First  the deed system needs an overhaul.  The part I'm talking about is the killing of 100's of mobs part.  The exploration, combat part is fine, but to get virtues you have to kill 90+ mobs?  WTF is that all the developers could think of?  I feel like an idiot when I start working on a slaughter deed.

Second, the trait system does not give enough of character customization.  Pretty much everyone follows the cookie cutter outline for their class.  PvMP is lame.  Why can't we be orcs, nazgul, what have you.  If any IP has the advantage of a story to use two different factions I would've though Lord of the Rings would have it.

Third, something else is lacking and I don't know what it is.  I just find myself logging in then not really doing anything.  I check the mail, etc, look at the AH.  Then exit.  I don't like the elitest attitude that you have to read the books to play the game.  I've tried to join a few guilds and when they asked if I had read the books, I said "No" and then the discussion was over.

-shrug- Never phased me, personally. Maybe that's 'cause I played L2 for a while and killing 100s of mobs for almost anything was the norm. But in LoTRO, I see it this way - first, it allows me to complete a few things at once:
    - I can work on quests that require the same mobs for the deeds.

    - I get alot of drops; several hundred silver worth by the time I'm done many times.

    - I can collect wood, skins, etc. to sell on the AH for extra money

    - In some cases, items drop that are useful in my craft.

    - Sometimes recipes or other items drop that are useful to a kin-mate.

    - I'm getting xp

    - It *really* doesn't take that long to do. For one example, it took me ~1.5 hours to kill 180 wargs and at the end of that I had lots of the above listed items to use, sell or pass on to kin-mates. Oh yeah and a nice upgrade to one of my traits.

Plus it's a rather relaxed activity, so I can just hang out and chat with kin-mates in-game or on Teamspeak which helps the time go by faster.

Meh.. that's going to be the case in any MMO, no matter what manner of character customization they have. People always gravitate toward the "Flavor of The Month", "best builds", etc. Turbine could completely re-do the entire system from the ground up, turn everything upside-down and before long, you'd see the same patterns forming.

With feeling something's lacking... Perhaps it's just not the right game for you. Certainly the game holds plenty of interest for many others. But of course, nothing is for everyone. LoTRO might simply not be "your game".  I've personally tried and abandoned I don't know how many MMOs (thank goodness for free trials) because, despite how much others raved about them, I just couldn't get into them, feeling the same "blah-ness" that you express for LoTRO. WoW is a perfect example of that for me. Insanely popular game, but despite many attempts, on different server types, different race/class combos, etc.. it begins to bore me to death after a few weeks and I can't even muster the interest to log in. Doesn't mean anything's wrong with the game - just means it doesn't offer what I'm looking for.
As for the whole "having to read the book"... Too bad I haven't run into any groups like that. I'd have a ball ragging on them. That's just ridiculous. That said, there are plenty of kins that do not have that, umm.. "qualification". I used to co-lead one that didn't, and I'm in one now that doesn't.

But an orc browsing the AH wouldnt make you feel odd? Killing 90 mobs..this is an MMO what did you expect. Killing things is a huge part. And its not all they could think of as you stated...exploration, using skills in combat ect..

I use a couple builds..i have no idea if they're cookie cutter i dont use the forums there. PvMP is as lame as every other MMO except EVE. They're all lame and meaningless. And what would you expect to do with your Nazgul in a lotr game that wouldnt make it retarded to play? I know what your saying but thats not the game they made. they never told you it would be.

Its their guild they can do whatever they want. Those are the minority though..I've never been asked that once.
