The monsters who scared me the most in my MMO experience are the carebears. oh wait... you meant monster mobs?
I don't really get "scared" of MMO mobs, maybe a little intimidated if I know they can 5 shot me and are as big as a building.
-------------------------------------- A human and an Elf get captured by Skaven. The rat-men are getting ready to shoot the first hostage with Dwarf-made guns when he yells, "Earthquake!" The naturally nervous Skaven run and hide from the imaginary threat. He escapes. The Skaven regroup and bring out the Elf. Being very smart, the Elf has figured out what to do. When the Skaven get ready to shoot, the Elf, in order to scare them, yells, "Fire!"
Heh, was an epic spider in EQ2 named Terrortula. I was just soloing a bit and run over a sand dune and straight into it, it was so big that even a leg didnt fit on my 22" screen, and the legs were hairy too....
I guess i got a thing for MMO spiders since the only other monster that got me jumping was the first Shelob i saw in Linage a long time ago.
Any snake from Everquest.. I mean Im scared of snakes in general but those damn snakes could KICK!!1!!?! and parry!!
Watch your thoughts; they become words. Watch your words; they become actions. Watch your actions; they become habits. Watch your habits; they become character. Watch your character; it becomes your destiny. Lao-Tze
The Scariest monsters for me have to be the gigantic dragons in any Everquest mmo. Those things freaked me out the first time I ever saw them. One of them killed me and that day I swore revenge on it. I can't remember if i killed it though.

Anyone who played Anarchy Online might remember this one.
In a mission, when everyone was just starting to heal up and get ready for the next room, someone spots a crate and opens it. All you heard was *boom!* and the shrill sound of a Roller Rat that was about 70 levels higher than the group.
There are 3 types of people in the world. 1.) Those who make things happen 2.) Those who watch things happen 3.) And those who wonder "What the %#*& just happened?!"
Asheron's Call Shadow Children. Ooh cute a tiny shadow person...

the king of all the scary monsters would have to be the dragon. as soon as you see the dark shape of the winged beast head towards you something clicks in your mind.
first time i got smashed by a dragon was in WoW. farming some little ones in the Badlands and i turned around to see a big black (even worse) dragon flying towards me. i managed to get off "oh ****" to my group before i was a corpse on the ground.
i have yet to meet a dragon that has not caused me to think twice about whether to fight it or not. its the only beast to make me consider whether it is a good idea to smack it in the face.
MMO wish list:
-Changeable worlds -Solid non level based game -Sharks with lasers attached to their heads
Asheron's Call had some scary situations - like just about every mob that would jump me, when I was trying to run through higher level areas. You run for half an hour, then get one-shotted by a tusker, hiding just over the crest of a hill, and the vitae loss was nothing compared to the half hour you just wasted, and the possible hour needed for corpse recovery. And yeah, Olthoi dungeons seemed pretty intense, once upon a time, too.
Course, EQ had mobs like the Griffon in newbie areas, or trains of brutal death that would come rampaging out from the depths of Unrest. Mobs that were only a little higher level, relatively speaking, seemed so horrible and uber, back then.
We were all newbies, though. Now, I don't know, same old tricks just annoy me, more than scare me. That's why the genre needs to evolve.
OTOH, though, sometimes it seems like they're not even trying to scare us, anymore. Mobs are just xp cows, and making them scary is just considered fluff. Or even worse, too challenging. Wouldn't want to ruin the gameplay for any retarded epileptic grandmothers that might be playing.
In any case, I can't think of anything scary in more recent MMOs.
When I want a single-player story, I'll play a single-player game. When I play an MMO, I want a massively multiplayer world.
so far, no game creatures have been freaky to me, particularly of the mmorpg persuation. The only games that have scared me were resident Evil and the latest doom, but those were startle scares (man is RE good at that). I remember a couple of times playing RE 2 on the n64 and having to pause it becuase something jumpe out of a window and scared me shitless! lol good stuff.

I think alot of the people who've wandered in here and scoffed don't really get what the thread is about. It's not so much as fear, as things that make you want to say "Oh, Sh*t. We're screwed."
As for me, the Chronos Titan of City of Heroes always seemed... Awe Inspiring. That and having to Move through The Hive on foot (Anyone who's been there knows why) are some of the more imposing things In MMO's that I've run across.
For me I don't find mobs scary but SWG and EVE were the first games that actually made me fear a openent because of the death pens.
You were a Jedi? I was a BH and loved it, I did fear getting caught by a Krayt dragon back when it took a whole guild to take one down and not a noob in bone armour or whatever it is they wear now. Also those force wielding hags (always forget their names) used to whack me off my speeder on Dathomir I think it was, bet you could take them out today solo and unarmed!
Yes Krayts were a tought fight and so were tuskans back in the day, I was a Pad Jedi and some Tuskan owned me hard but I got away in time. Now though they were soloable and very easy which is a shame seeing as how tough they were in the old days. I remember fearing BH even as a Jedi Knight I could still get owned in PVP but during the CU PVP against a BH became sooo easy and with ROTW and the instances grinding became easy.
I unlocked during the perma death and didn't knwo what I was doing alot of the time so I died 3 times and was left with just my character... I got upto Knight again before they stopped it all during the CU. Then the NGE came along and I dunno it pissed me off sooo much cause of all the time I spent with my Jedi and now it was worthless.
I quit though because fed up of all the lies SOE and LA made.
lol back in 5th grade when i played runescape i remember going into the end of the wilderness, nervous as hell because i would see high lvl monsters and guys just running out, trying to kill me.... I was a scared 5th grader

males who play female toons and swear they are females in real life are creepy.....or misunderstood.
Also SoE and "take overs" or "Game Improvments" that scares the heck out of me
Brad McQuaid scares me
Some one yelling "TRAIN!!" in early MMOs scare me.
resting in AV BG then gettting worked by a epic stun rogue who knows what they are doing scares me

Probably not considered an MMO, but half the monsters in Diablo 2 were freaky as hell. The scariest boss to me being Mephisto.
The Butcher (I think it's the first boss) from Diablo 1
Most of the asheron's call 1 monsters were pretty creepy. The umbris shadows were a good example.
And yeah OHN was a scary place as mentioned earlier.
Sharks in DAOC.
