Everything about this game is much better than anything I've played MMO wise. It's really a shame it had all of those launch issues. However, something is bothering me about it. If I do all the work to get to level 50, are they going to close it down?
I doubt EVERYTHING about this game is much better than anything else.
1)It's low on endgame content.
2)Diplomacy is pretty useless. It's not really incorporated into the world.
3)Some think crafting is useless since, named item drops have had their item level increased by 10!
4)Hitching
5)Character models are shit.
6)On screen character performance is shit.
7)Some animations are horrible.
8)Plenty enough bugs and broken quests.
9)Default UI is clunky and ugly.
10)Font is horrible.
11)Helmets are mostly ugly.
12)Normal mapping can sometimes make the world look unreal and ugly.
13)Normal mapping is needed to keep mountains from looking like shit.
14)Clothing and textures are underwhelming.
FYI: I've been joining the game on and off since May07. I just recently canceled my account, and waiting for GU6 at least this time. 1) Depends how you choose to play. I've played since release and only maxed in tailoring. There's so much to see that I'm not in a hurry to get to the end. And I'm sure devs are aware of the fact they need to create more content to the 'end'.
2) I wouldn't say useless. They are desired by crafters and adventurers e.g raiders. And the ones I know really enjoy diplomacy. I've had the best laughs on the diplomacy quests. Really nice storylines and dialogue in them. A Diplomat could say Adventuring is useless. All matter of view.
3) Yes some, but crafting community is still thriving and I certainly enjoy it (producing items, not the work order grind). And I'm sure it's not in it's final stage yet. Dev's will still balance the game, I'm certain.
4) In the scope of GU5 or earlier. Dev's stated this.
5) Your point of view. More optimization to come and new options as well. I wait and see, but I personally love the way my wood elf druid looks like. She is pretty.
6) character performance? do you mean their movement? I think this Monk video is one of the best I've seen and it is fun to watch. But maybe I'm just used to the way characters move in this game heh. http://www.dassechstehaus.de/forum/viewtopic.php?f=19&t=66
7) Maybe, I'd like the dancing emote to be more feminine (since I'm a female). But it's hardly game breaking?
8) Being fixed all the time. And this is not the state of any other game??
9) Lots of custom UIs there to be chosen from.
10) *sighs* game breaking?
11) matter of opinion. I see many characters proudly wearing them, even if some said they are ugly in the forums. I just turn it off if I don't like the looks, but thats usually because I don't want to mess my hair *flips her hair*
12-13) Normal mapping? you mean rendering and other graphics quality? Yes unfortunate if not able to run the game in best quality form. I don't just to have it performing smooth, but still it makes me awe the sights sometimes.
14) Well depends what you are used to and what you like. Realism vs unrealistic.
Anyway nothing listed here prevents me from gaming and enjoying the content. It's matter of choices.
1. If someone cares for graphics so much that it decides about what game he's playing, he should play egoshooters and not roleplaying games. 2. I cant help people that arent impressed with Vanguards art and graphics. For me, its much more than I ever asked for. The viewing distances you can have in this game are simply amazing. And the various races have been matched beautifully, for example, the halfling houses are done exactly right. 3. People who want visually perfect combat should play, guess what, damn egoshooters. Combat in Vanguard is simply superb; I keep wondering how I will ever be able to stand a game without these combat features. I frankly dont even have time to check the combat animations, because I have so much else to do. 4. Sorry, but I dont care for animal races.
LoL, "egoshooters"?
I love shooters also. I play BF2, BF2142 and ARMA whenever I get a chance. Again its a matter of taste I guess. I just realized a long time ago MMORPG's are simply NOT the genre for PvP. Every genre has its strengths.
Other then that VG is the same old hot button whack a mole found in every other MMO with a few minor variations. Doesn't bother me in the least because its what I expected from an MMO. hotkey / timer / hotkey / timer. So, whatever on the animations, its not like you control it anyway. Now if was like Oblivion where you controlled the block or parry, that would be different.
I agree with the other guy on the animal races though. Very carelessly done. I really hope they do something about that. It was a missed opportunity in the artistic sense. Does it break the game? No.
Sorry, but the combat in VG is complex enough already for my needs.

1. Endgame has just as many quest areas as the other level ranges, and the quests there are all very long, so I fail to see your point. Vanguard is NOT a game where the endgame is the game itself, like in Guild Wars. I have a maxlevel adventurer since more than 3 months and I am far from having finished my endgame quests. Plus theres APW and that one will probably last longer than the rest combined.
2. True, but - other games dont even have Diplomacy at all, so where is the disadvantage to other games ?
3. Or one could alternatively say they made things easier for people who want to just adventure. And the level increase was (a) only 5 levels and (b) only for some drops, not for all of them.
4. Not as such, no. I mean, there is some sometimes, but its not a general problem.
6. Eh ? Whats that anyway ?
7. The only bad animation I've seen in the whole game is the movement of the camel mounts. Oh, and there where some ugly animation bugs sometimes.
8. Not the problem. Every game of that size and this sheer amount of quests will have buggy quests. The problem is that some major questlines are buggy since the beginning of the game and the devs still didnt managed to fix them.
All other: Thats about taste. For example, I have no idea whats wrong with the Font of the game. I know only ONE animation that really looks bad. Yeah I dont like the new faces and the new helmets, but I hope the reduced number of polygons for players will help to allow better performance in future mass events.

I think almost everything you've listed here is due to be fixed or changed, isn't it?
I just have to comment on this, that if it's a year old game and is has this many major faults that are due to be changed. Then shouldn't we all agree that there is something seriously wrong with this game.
I don't mean now that Vanguard wouldn't also have it's good sides, as it has also much good in it. It just would deserve a larger dedicated team to support and upgrade it, so that it could really be fixed and some time become a good game.
As it is I don't think it can be considered good, it has its fans just because there isn't any similar and good game available.
1. Actually if you compare vanguard to World of Warcraft at the 1 year mark vanguard has just as much, if not more end game than wow had
2. Diplomacy is not useless .now i didnt like diplo to much myself but my guild needed people to do it to get the notes for the guild hall deed to buy the plot . So i did it for my guild but as i was grinding notes i would get bored and go do all the different diplo quests around Telon Well totally awesome for filling in the lore of different area's. Well i wouldnt say it was fun am glad i did it because now i go through places and its not just say 3 rivers with some npc's standing around ,Its now a place i know the people and thier struggles and some of the history of the area .Plus high level diplo clothing is awesome looking and there other things you can get like barding and whole bunch of stuff you cant get any other way
3.Lol come on crafting is usless , first thing i did was craft to 50 in weaponsmith well guess who has the most money in my guild ya thats right the crafters they didnt bump the stats of dropped gear to the point that crafted is now useless that would be pretty stupid dont you think
4 .Hitching well personally i dont have a problem with hitching or preformance myself i know that some people seem to on these forums anyway, ive never heard anyone in my guild ever complain about hitching or preformance. But than again where all adults and all of us do have pretty good computers
The rest of your points are a matter of opinion so i have no comment on them other than i dont agree with any of them. Except the helmets are ugly one,but for me helmets are ugly in any game i wont play a game that dosent give me the option of hiding them

Once again, we have multiple people not understanding why I wrote what I did. Usually I find myself playing devil's advocate, just to get people to discount them.
Most of these are in COMPARISON to other games, BECAUSE the OP was also comparing to other games. All of these ring true for me, obviously. I'm not here to knock the game, but I just think it needed to be said.
oh and here's another one.
15)Horses are laughable. I'd rather run on foot, than look at the travesty that are horses.
I just added this to my Station Access acct last week and have got some good time in on it. It wasn't that much of a hit at $20 for the discs.
The game isn't half bad. It's not as polished as EQ2, and it has bugs, but the world is huge and diverse. Actually I have not seen such diversity in a base release game without expansions anywhere else. WoW even with expansion does not come close to the areas that VG has.
For me, it is a diversion once in a while when I want a change for a night, with something that's different, without having to add another subscription cost. It is weak graphically and content-wise compared to EQ2 but the added things such as diplomacy, make it worth playing.

Vanguard has three really strong points in my opinion that set it apart
1. The world graphics, it really is a world where you are free to go anywhere. You see something 10 miles away you can fun there. There are no walls or artificial boundries.
2. The combat system is the best. Attacks, chains, reactions, weaknesses, defensive moves, counter attacks, stances, finishers. The combat system is the most advanced and actually makes you decide what you are doing as opposed to just hitting a canned sequense of buttons. Good diversity in class abilities and the weakness system makes group combat fun rewarding people that work together.
3. Diversity, this is player activity. You really have almost 3 games in one. Crafting and diplomacy in addition to adventuring. Each has it's own quests, it's own gear, and it's own objectives and rewards. A player can log on and adventure, or harvest, or do diplomacy, or do crafting. As a player you have more choices and more things to do then any other game on the market.
These are Vanguards outstanding features in my opinion.

the magic 8 ball says, "definitely so".
could we please get correspondent writers and moderators, on the eve forum at mmorpg.com, who are well-versed on eve-online and aren't just passersby pushing buttons? pretty please?

I guess vanguard is the only mmo you played,or you must be on some realy potent stuff, wich will probably kill you in the next few days.
Ok, Kyleran, Enigma and now airstrike.
What games is appropriate to think is fun?
As according to you if someone is liking something you guys don't, they are "stupid".
Plus if they have even played Vanguard they have probably not played it since the horrible launch so they have no idea what the game is like now.
Maybe they should make a Vanguard Refugees forum so these guys have somewhere to spout their anger and lack of actual information. It is working pretty good for the SWG guys.
It is ok if you hate Vanguard, but its also ok that other dont.
Good idea.
Even in the vanguard official forums people are stating how much Vanguard has improved.
out of curiousity, if you post "my god, but vanguard sucks" on the official forums... do the forum mods leave it? if not, then i don't understand your line of thinking.
smed?

honestly, if graphics aren't an issue for you; then, why aren't you playing uo? there is no game that has as much depth and variation as UO.

True. VG might not be as polished as EQ2 but EQ2 has had much more time to mature. I think graphically speaking, VG has the better graphics. Content-wise, unless you have your head stuck in the mud (not saying you), it is extremely difficult NOT to find content in Vanguard. There is simply too much of it. I think people who claim there is not enough content (again, not you) really haven't explored much of the world. It's like they move five feet, don't find a quest giver and complain that there is no content.
Now, while EQ2 might have more interesting content and way the hell more raiding content, again, EQ2 has time on its side. I am VERY MUCH hoping that SOE can turn around VG like they did with EQ2. EQ2 was a universally panned game until the Fay expansion when suddenly the entire industry looked up and recognized that SOE was finally doing something right with the game. Here's hoping the same works out for VG.
While I prefer VG over EQ2 (that massive world is just too much to ignore), I am hoping that both games thrive for many years to come.
PS: And to the guy who looked into the magic 8ball, I really do think yours is broken.
No, there is plenty of high level content, just not enough raid content.
2)Diplomacy is pretty useless. It's not really incorporated into the world.
Diplomacy is a great route to take for lore-addicts. However, it is an aspect of the game that seriously needs to be reworked. This is something that will be done in the future.
3)Some think crafting is useless since, named item drops have had their item level increased by 10!
How is crafting useless when people still need other types of equipment like parts for ships and houses?
4)Hitching
Of course, it is so easy to lay this criticism against VG. Got no response to that. But, its like taking a cheap shot at a blind person.
5)Character models are shit.
Highly disagree.
6)On screen character performance is shit.
Again, highly disagree. Character performance is fine on my 2 YEAR OLD computer.
7)Some animations are horrible.
I think the Dark Elves running animation is a bit stiff, but I just don't agree with people who claim that animations in VG are horrible. I completely disagree with you. This is a criticism that is not factual about the game, it is merely your own personal view.
8)Plenty enough bugs and broken quests.
I have returned to VG after taking one year off. So far, much of the bugs I remember are no longer present. Broken quests? Didn't come across one when I played a year ago and haven't come across one now. Again, another non-factual point about the game, just your personal view. I also guess there's no complimenting a development team that has been hard at work removing problems from the game. I guess there's no such thing as giving credit where credit is due.
9)Default UI is clunky and ugly.
Another personal opinion. Don't like the UI? Go into layout mode and change it? Still don't like it? Go and download a user developed UI. Practically every MMO has this same complaint. It goes both ways: either you like it or you don't.
10)Font is horrible.
Running out of things to complain about?
11)Helmets are mostly ugly.
Another personal viewpoint.
2)Normal mapping can sometimes make the world look unreal and ugly.
Yes, this is where most people complain about the so-called poor graphics of Vanguard. They are only poor if you don't have a decent machine to run them on. However, I'm on a two year old machine, running 1680x1050 on high performance, balanced rendering and normal mapping up to 100%. The world looks quite LOVELY to me.
13)Normal mapping is needed to keep mountains from looking like shit.
Another personal viewpoint. They look beautiful to me with or without normal mapping.
14)Clothing and textures are underwhelming.
ANOTHER personal viewpoint. I mean, don't you have any factual criticisms against the game? I think clothing looks very realistic...especially cloth. You can actually see the weaving of the textiles in tents and robes and cloaks. The ground textures are the most realistic I've ever seen. Rocks look like rocks, dirt and sand looks like dirt and sand. This is such a broad topic since there are thousands of textures in the game. It is sad to know that you have personally observed every single one of them and have still come to your conclusion. Ah well....
FYI: I've been joining the game on and off since May07. I just recently canceled my account, and waiting for GU6 at least this time.
I think the game sucks because it's a throwback from EverQuest, yet another sucky game. The hardcore stink is enough to make me wretch. I wouldn't mind that there are a few hardcore style games on the market, but you nasty bastids infiltrate every game out there and bitch and whine till the developers make a casual game more hardcore. WoW is the perfect example. They never intended to have much if any raiding and it was not going to have the best rewards in the game, then they did a 180 thanks to you hardcores who bitch louder than a freight train. Even Turbine caved in to the hardcores in LOTRO, maybe not to the extent that Blizzard did, but they shouldn't have added any hardcore elements to begin with, you've got VG, EQ1 & 2, Lineage 1 & 2, FFXI and DAoC, leave the two casual games on the market alone, kthnx.
VG can keep it's long grinds and slow assed gameplay, it's tedious crafting and diplomacy system and death penalty as long as it means you freaks will stop trying to change casual games more to your liking.
With PvE raiding, it has never been a question of being "good enough". I play games to have fun, not to be a simpering toady sitting through hour after hour of mind numbing boredom and fawning over a guild master in the hopes that he will condescend to reward me with shiny bits of loot. But in games where those people get the highest progression, anyone who doesn't do that will just be a moving target for them and I'll be damned if I'm going to pay money for the privilege. - Neanderthal
vanguard is a cool game, been playing it for a few weeks now and it still keeps me intrested.
and yea i played allot of mmo's out there.
ppl just dont care about old skool mmo's anymore.... its allot about graphics and WTFPWN looking armors and stuff. no wonder WOW is soo populair among u kids.
my opinion: Vanguard rocks for the moment and will see where it goes from there

1)It's low on endgame content.
No, there is plenty of high level content, just not enough raid content.
What many consider "endgame" content. WoW (and more) have A LOT MORE TO OFFER. Crafting, diplomacy, exploring (running around haha), are not endgame content. They can all be done before you get to max level.
2)Diplomacy is pretty useless. It's not really incorporated into the world.
Diplomacy is a great route to take for lore-addicts. However, it is an aspect of the game that seriously needs to be reworked. This is something that will be done in the future.
Thanks for telling me something I already knew. The lore was only good for the first 10 levels, and i had a fun time while it was good. Many people also complain that you HAVE to buy diplomacy gear to advance further (need diplomatic reputation or something), I didn't get to reach that point was getting too grindy for me.
3)Some think crafting is useless since, named item drops have had their item level increased by 10!
How is crafting useless when people still need other types of equipment like parts for ships and houses?
I don't craft, and particuarly don't care about it (that's why I said "some think" meaning.... the crafters?). But maybe by "item levels" i meant crafting gear and weapons.
4)Hitching
Of course, it is so easy to lay this criticism against VG. Got no response to that. But, its like taking a cheap shot at a blind person.
Just another straw on the camel's back.
5)Character models are shit.
Highly disagree.
Good for you. Orcs are acceptable though.
6)On screen character performance is shit.
Again, highly disagree. Character performance is fine on my 2 YEAR OLD computer.
I get 45~ FPS in outdoor settings. It was not abnormal for it to drop to 10~fps in group settings WITH shadows turned off.
7)Some animations are horrible.
I think the Dark Elves running animation is a bit stiff, but I just don't agree with people who claim that animations in VG are horrible. I completely disagree with you. This is a criticism that is not factual about the game, it is merely your own personal view.
It's the little things that make the game feel alive. I'm not particularly one to worry about these things, I just want to play a fun game.
8)Plenty enough bugs and broken quests.
I have returned to VG after taking one year off. So far, much of the bugs I remember are no longer present. Broken quests? Didn't come across one when I played a year ago and haven't come across one now. Again, another non-factual point about the game, just your personal view. There was this one heavy chest armor my Orc Warrior had. It made him look like he had BREASTS! Needless to say, I trashed it. But, it's smoother than most people would have you believe. That doesn't change the facts that they exist. Some people may encounter more of them than others, it's dependent upon a lot of factors. I DO compliment the dev team. I don't keep giving it more chances because I'm a masochist.
9)Default UI is clunky and ugly.
Another personal opinion. Don't like the UI? Go into layout mode and change it? Still don't like it? Go and download a user developed UI. Practically every MMO has this same complaint. It goes both ways: either you like it or you don't.
UI is pretty bad. Maps are horrible. 1 map per continent, and it doesn't get more detailed. Zoomed in it's a blocky mess. I downloaded my own custom UI that was much better. But for the UI, text doesn't scale right, making it nearly unreadable, as well as the game doesn't save the UI scale settings. You HAVE to rescale it everytime you log in.
10)Font is horrible.
Running out of things to complain about?
Valid complaint, even others are offended by the ameteurish font. Some won't even resub because of it.
11)Helmets are mostly ugly.
Another personal viewpoint.
See official forums. Most people don't like most helms.
Uh... I ran this game pretty much just below max settings thank you. The world doesn't change THAT much from where I was
13)Normal mapping is needed to keep mountains from looking like shit.
Another personal viewpoint. They look beautiful to me with or without normal mapping.
Mountains aren't mountains, but more like big hills, where at the base it curves up from the ground. The texture is nothing but plain brown for the mountains I speak of. I kid you not.
Ah well....
Rocks either come off as decent but silvery (no normal mapping) to wet/shiny silvery(normal mapping). A lot of armors are just a different color set. The pants on my hunter were pretty much just plain purple, but at least it had the stats right?
FYI: I've been joining the game on and off since May07. I just recently canceled my account, and waiting for GU6 at least this time.
Boy is reasoning with fanboys such a job.
I don't mean to hate on the game, but when people say something like "better than any other game" I find I just have to discount such a claim.
Boy is reasoning with fanboys such a job. Yeah, and reasoning with people thinking their opinion is the one and only... I don't mean to hate on the game, but when people say something like "better than any other game" I find I just have to discount such a claim.

"is much better than anything I've played MMO wise"
You misquoted the OP. He didn't come here claiming it was "better then any other game" period, he simply stated it was better then anything else he played as far as MMO's go and left it at that.
He did not try to inflict his opinion on any of us as fact unlike yourself. Better luck next time.
Everything about this game is much better than anything I've played MMO wise. It's really a shame it had all of those launch issues. However, something is bothering me about it. If I do all the work to get to level 50, are they going to close it down?
No it's not.... But hey, its nice that you follow orders from other Vanguard players and come here and make an account on MMORPG.com ONLY to spread that statement that you even yourself cancel in your next post. I am sure they are happy you cooperated that easilly and you are not a tool at all.

Bah,
Nul1's post are more fun to rip apart, the OP abandon this thread a while back

Notice I said. "something LIKE 'better than any other game'". Not that big of a deal for me. I saw that right after I posted and deemed it okay. When you talk of games you usally only compare it to games of that genre.
The minute he hit the new post button and tried to spread false information, he tried "inflicting" his opinion.
Comments
Except the helmets are ugly one,but for me helmets are ugly in any game i wont play a game that dosent give me the option of hiding them
I doubt EVERYTHING about this game is much better than anything else.

There is a lot to like about V:SOH in its current state.
The major problem for PvP minded players is the low population on Sartok. Without lots of PCs, PvP becomes dull.
This is the best you have played? In what way?

Currently playing: No MMOs. They all suck.

Currently playing: No MMOs. They all suck.
I am playing Vanguard currently.
It is MUCH improved since I tried it at launch.
Love the crafting and diplomacy. I can't wait to check out the player housing and player made ships.
- Neanderthal
vanguard is a cool game, been playing it for a few weeks now and it still keeps me intrested.
and yea i played allot of mmo's out there.
ppl just dont care about old skool mmo's anymore.... its allot about graphics and WTFPWN looking armors and stuff. no wonder WOW is soo populair among u kids.
my opinion: Vanguard rocks for the moment and will see where it goes from there
Decaf
And its just as tasty as the real thing!
