If this game was fun more than a few thousand people would be playing. Its as simple as that. The "haters" will stop when the "vanbois" stop spreading lies about how awesome this game is. Unless, you're comparing it to D&L.
Flying through the Kojan area on the back of a pegasus was perhaps the best thing I had ever experienced. Seeing the fog and the forests on the different islands was amazing, and all I could think about was how much I needed to get money together to buy a boat.
Seeing the huge guild houses in Qalia impressed me alot, and I was brought back to a time when I remember watching Aladdin as a kid. They were HUGE, and I was greatly impressed.
Searching through the haunted Hillsbury Manor and uncovering secret rooms, visiting different areas and trying to see if there was something I was missing, is perhaps some of the best fun I have had in an MMO.
Reading through the Thestran and Qalian diplomacy Web quests, I found some of the best stories I had ever read in an MMO.
I remember it at release, the game has come along way, and every day I see more new people asking how things are done, looking for groups or help, and just enjoying it.
to see for myself, I gave the game a try. Getting ahold of a trial key was NOT easy. Downloading and patching the game on a very fast connection took 8 hours.
The game ran like shit. I've got a reasonably powerful system. I play LOTRO at max dx9 settings. VG just didn't run well. It would be smooth most of the time, and then suddenly lag...and not when entering new areas, so it wasn't textures loading.
Game seemed to lose synch with where I was. No packet loss, decent ping. I'd be near the beach (not on it) and get the underwater breath meter. Odd. I'd attack a mob, and it would vanish...only to come running at me from over a nearby hill.
Animations seemed jerky, jumping animations hurt my eyes.
Character customisation at creation...ah....yeah. Pathetic.
The game seemed to fatigue my eyes. It was pretty enough to look at, but it seemed to make me tired to play it...don't know how else to explain it.
Something about the perspective seemed off as well. Can't put my finger on it...it just wasn't comfortable to play.
I logged off after a few hours, and when I went to log back on later....the launcher decided it was time to "scan files". It took 15 minutes. Frankly, I was more than annoyed...when I want to play a game, I expect it to start.
Once I got in game, I was greeted with graphics glitches, and a crash to desktop.
Maybe I'm spoiled byt games like LOTRO, but I expect games requiring a monthly fee to actually run and be stable.
I promptly uninstalled, and reclaimed that huge footprint on my HDD.

Hrm, I started playing just before GU4, and the problems you describe were non-existant on my system and ISP at the time.
Post GU4, I also have few to no problems, when did you try it out? I can assure you while there is some hitching, usually on loads, typically there are few problems when I play.
I do hope you will try it again, particularly if you were trialing before GU3/GU4.
Ah yeah, I guess I should also see what type of a system you have.
I'm running Vista 64bit with 4 gigs of Ram, 8800GTX video card, and an AMD Dual core processor.
More info can be found on my xfire profile.
The game can be quite a pig when it comes ot resources, so perhaps that was it.

Actually, it was just this week that I gave it a try. I find it rather surprising that other games with higher system requirements run smoother than VG. I can only put it down to poor or unoptimized code.
I was able to alt tab very smoothly in and out of the game, though. The game's performance didn't seem to suffer (read: get worse) from it, and there was no delay when drawing my desktop.
All in all, I probably could have gotten more performance out of the game with a couple days of tweaking, but I just didn't fall in love with the game.
The word that seems to used most often to describe VG is "potential", and I agree with it. Given some time, and more streamlining of code, it could be one hell of a game.
But something would have to be done about the characters all moving like they are marionettes.

The animations are horrible ...WHY WHY.
