Hmmm..... I do prefer the real life 24 hour cycle. But after playing CoH/CoV where the cycle is less then 30 min (If I remember correct. It was really fast anyways) I dont really care too much. But with a game like Conan, where they wanna keep the realistic atmosphere, I would say minimum of 6 aswell. But 12 would work aswell instead of 24.
I think that something around 6 hours max would work best: many people have school/work/etc that forbid them from playing in the mornings/evenings/whatever so they near never get to experience sunrises/sunsets/moon/etc and I think that is wrong. For example back in my wow days some of the nicest and full of atmosphere (imo) screenshots I have taken were at night, when for some strange reason I could not sleep and were wasting time by the computer - and again people with more normal cycles never had a chance of seeing that since the game followed our normal 24 hour day.
So, I do not want sun/moon flying at crazy speed through the sky (1h cycle for example), nor do I want to have to set my alarm clock to see the moon at night (24h cycle) that is why 6h sounds sensible to me.
Sounds good. 6 Hours might be one of the best cycles, so everyone can enjoy both day and night without the speed-cycle as you said. Like 1 hour or less. ^^
An uneven number of hours/minutes would be better.
If you put a 3 hour or 6 hour cycle, it would mean that at for example, 1800 hours at Joes place, it would always be night in the game.. and if the poor sucker don't have more than 3(6) hours to play..He will play in the night...every day.
Thanks for typing down your thoughts and thanks for the votes. I'm aware that some people will keep playing night most of the time (in the week), but then again others will have to play during day most of the time. Anyway I personally don't have a problem with that, I'm already glad to see that most of the people still prefer +6h.
Keep voting if you can, the more votes the better accuracy we get
the only reason i'd be against a 24h cycle is that there are people who play on a set schedule.
They may play after school, or after work etc.
If your play hours are hours that always fall in the night ours of the game, you wont get to see much daytime. For this reason, I wouldnt mind a 12 hour cycle, or a 6h cycle. Let people see the entire game in all its glory.
I like the real, 24hour. I'm not sure what LOtRO is, but that always felt a little to quick for my tastes. I also hope if they do a true 24 hour day/night cycle that they include a couple of oceanic servers for those of us who play mostly at night.
12h has the advantadge that people playing always at the same hour will see the world in daylight first and during the night the next time they play.
But a cicle of 20 hours for instance would accomplish the same only in a longer period of time, so you'd play with full daylight, and slowly if would become darker and darker, to start seeing the sun raise again. It's a 4h difference so in one week you have done a full cicle, if I'm not wrong, or 8 days.
I like CoH's day night cycle. Other than that, I wouldn't want to see someone always playing in one or the other due to their particular schedule. How many games does day or night have any major effect on the game?
It would be cool to have day and night effects like vampire and ghouls out at night. Other events like full moons or eclipse with appropriate game world effects would be fun. But I would imagine some people would complain about missing the night events and force something creative like instance day/night situations.
Then again, I would love to see game worlds where lighting made a difference and you had to carry lighting devices to see or require infravision/night vision.
I'd prefer a number of hours that are not divisible by 24, like a nine hour cycle, so the time cycle is just a little more randomized. With this, the time cycle would slowly change over time. So instead of something like a 12 hour, where you would see a similar amount of times, it would be a little bit more contingent, which is what I prefer... so instead of being part of a 24 hour base, it would be constant to a 72 hour base, making things a little bit more interesting for everyone.
this is just a nut jobs opinion though to be perfectly honest the amount of daylight/night time is not one of the biggest issues for me.
EDIT: I also wanted to mention my support for the above post of this one. I like the idea where day and night actually effect an MMORPG. Like assassins and rangers gain a specific benefit from the night time outdoors or shadows inside while priests of mitria gain benefits from sunlight. And weather benefits would be pretty cool as well, such as tempests of set would gain benefits when it rains or conquerors gaining benefits on certain terrains.

I like the idea of giving some king of Buff when its Day or Night for some classes. But the only thing I can think of that has anything to do with this, is that its harder to detect people that sneaks in shadows then those who sneaks in light. So perhaps the only benefit I can see now is that on night, everyone sneaks better. ^-^

1 hour daytime and 45 minutes nighttime. And that is the max. Rather 45 minutes daytime and 30 minutes nighttime.
Imagine you want to sneak with your assassin into a keep to assassinate the warlord for a quests. If you have a job and a life it might happen that you wait 3 real months until you see the night in-game. But its not about causal gameplay, it about sane cycles.
I see that the votes for the "several cycles per play session"-idea has increased and took over the leading position. And this happened while I was sleeping, so I'm guessing most of the new voters live in Australia or the continent of America.
I think I have to conclude that we Europeans have a diffirent taste on that matter, maybe because there are more time zones spread over the country/continent where you live. If this can be proven to be true (with much bigger polls on Funcom's forum for example), do you think they could implement diffirent rules for this day/night cycle system? I don't know...
For me it's pretty crucial, LOTRO was way to fast, it distrubed my gaming pleasure . And I want AoC to be just perfect
I picked less than 6hrs for a full rotation. My ideal split would be 3hrs day and 2hrs night for a 5 hour ingame day. I'd also like to see a ingame sundial option up near the radar/map.

24 hours please. i love real time day/night cycle. adds alot to the game imho.
Currently Playing Path of Exile
I would prefer not 24 hours as I usually play at night and I wouldn't mind seeing some sun then as well. So I would prefer 6 or 12 hours.
I think it's at 2 hours now in beta? Seems a bit short, but might just be in the beta to test the weather and the different kind of night/day.

I would prefer it to be somewhere around 3-6 hours.

I agree!
I would prefer a day-night cycle of 60-120 minutes. That allows most players to experience time cycle-related content in one playing session.

The only issue with fast day/night circle I can think of is the max detailed shadows moving too fast. Which is not a real issue.
yeah, like one pixel every minute
They move a lot faster than that in a 1min = 1 hour in-game circle.
A 6 hours day/night cicle would mean 15 mins = 1 hour in-game.
A 3 hours day/night cicle would mean roughly 7 mins = 1 hour in-game.
Maybe 5 mins = 1 hour in-game is the best.

For me, slower is better. Anything less than two hours per day will actually start to bother me.

I prefer shorter cycles in games.
More light then dark.
