I think it should be at random set between a certain time frame. Say 6-24 hour random rotations. Not sure if that would work but it sounds interesting lol.
I wouldn't see that working because, even though the game is still a game, they're trying to make things a little more realistic. A set timeline would make things a little more indulging and realistic for the players... not only that, but I could imagine a huge amount of people would be against this if it was implemented. I think what you're suggesting is that the day and night cycles were random, which wouldn't exactly work too well.
6 hours day/night cycle would work best imo. This allow as most people have said a larger varities of playing time for the average player. Also game quest or special spawns can take place easier. I wouldnt' want to have to alarm my clock for 12 am because the quest mob i need to kill spawn at that time. Or alarm wake up to do a seige because the defending team place the attack time frame at 12am. Just my 2cent.
I think that a 12 hour Day/Night cycle would be best, and here's why.
When I played WoW, I noticed that whenever I played, it was almost always night time in the world. Why? Because of when I got to play - at night. With a 12 hour cycle, one night when I play, it could be night, but the next time I play, it could be day. This way I get to experience everything in all times of the day.
Six hour cycles could work also, but I wouldn't go any less than that.
One of my games (DAOC?) had a 4 hour Day/Night cycle, and I'd prefer it I think. That way you get to experience full range of cycle frequently.
But, what is really important is that the night cycle has real meaning. Back in the day , DAOC's night cycle was really dark, and you really got benefits from a torch. Now, it seems all game make night like there's a full moon in the sky all the time. I wish we actually had to use torches or magic light spells in the dark.

Don't confuse a players ability, with a class being Over Powered.

I agree that it sounds interesting though
If only SW:TOR could be this epic...
well im going to vote that Conans world stop rotating and the sun shines 24/7. I hate traveling in the dark.

Doesn't really matter to me, but I'd rather have a 24 hour one.
i think a 12 or 6 hour cycle would be great... a 24 hours would be sad for those who can only play at night..
