NDA is still in, no date for open beta. Will it be a lag-feast? Will my computer handle the graphics or do i need to buy a new one? Very little information about the game. Will i be able to try it out before they send my preorder box to me? If the game dont live up to the hype will you as a preordering customer feel cheated? And what negative impact will that have to the MMORPG genre? Is Funcoms treatment of their customers hurting the MMORPG genre? Are Funcom ripping preordering customers of their hard earned money by not delivering enough information?
I feel great. Better than ever in fact. Glad I pre-ordered.
OP, how do you feel about your DF pre-order?
I'd rather wait another year to play Darkfall than wait 1 day to play a nerfed AoC that clearly isn't ready for launch. The longer that NDA stays up the more it shows how badly this game is progressing.
You would think for a simple, linear, non-innovative game like AoC (which I was really excited about playing until recently) that the kinks might be worked out by now... but nope.
Thats fine by me. I enjoy online gaming. You enjoy waiting, and fantasizing about games. The world is plenty big enough for us both.
I think your guess (because thats what it is) for just "one more year" until Darkfall is kind of sad really. I am sure many, many gamers said that about Darkfall over the years. I am betting at least a full decade of development before you see a Beta. Maybe? It's already been 7 years, thats only 3 away. I would say the odds are on my side.
I wasn't guessing, more using that number as an example. AoC fans and MMO fans alike, especially those who thrive on PvP had better hope Darkfall or games like it doesn't launch in the coming years because it will simply make games like AoC/WAR obsolete.
Why would you play a game that restricts you in so many ways when you can PvP in a virtual world with full combat control? It would be like playing elder scrolls but in an MMO... I can see why the AoC fanbois really don't want Darkfall to launch.
The problem is that I would think that players everywhere would want the chance to play the absolute best games possible... I think Darkfall and Mortal Online will render current online gaming useless and offer something a lot of us really want -- Freedom.
Believe me I would like nothing more than for Darkfall to launch. My point of view is that any game straying away from the WoW formula is a game that I would support whole heartedly no matter how successful or unsuccessful it may be. As long as developers keep trying i'll be behind them 100%. Games like WAR and Aion who are just aiming to be more and more like WoW to steal their player base I would not spend one ounce of effort to support.
Although I would love the freedom of Darkfall and Mortal Online and I can't wait for them to come out I also look forward to playing on a PVP server on AOC and they are at least trying new things which is why I will support this game until the end... I mean after AOC there isn't anything remotely original coming out for a long long time.
It doesn't seem like Darkfall will ever launch in any shape or form.
There is a bigger chance for either Mortal Online or Earthrise to launch.
Here the problem however. Darkfall online will take an infinite amount of time to develop. Mortal Online and Earthrise will take at least a year. WARhammer will take about 6 months. That leaves AoC as the closest real and released game to be played in the coming month. That ... or what's already available out there right now.
Thing is, if you and I was satisfied with what's available right now, we wouldn't be looking for another game now, would we?

The only thing I am a "fanboi" of is online gaming. I have tried dozens of them. Some for years in the case of EQ, some for only a few months like AO. There are things I want and like in my MMOs, but that doesn't stop me from playing one that isn't "perfect" for me. I played WoW for a year. WoW was great fun in it's way, I didn't feel like playing it anymore so I left and went to another game. AoC may be the same for me, or I may play it for 4 years solid like EQ. Guess what? I win either way because I am doing what I love, I am playing an MMO.
Any argument that you make about the features of Darkfall are just plain silly. It's gonna feature this, it's gonna revolutionize that blah, blah, blah. I will go and put up a website right now for a game called Zomg! Online, featuring "The Matrix like V.R.capabilities" from newly acquired alien "Area 51" technology straight from the military! Dress up a bunch of people in renaissance festival clothes, pose them at a castle in Scotland somewhere for a "screenshot". Bang, my claims of features would hold almost as much weight as the claims made on the Aventurine Darkfall site.
All that being said, I would STILL buy a copy of Darkfall and play if it hit the shelves tomorrow. Because thats what I do. Greatest game ever or shit on a disc. I try them all at some point. Why not?

Well AoC has NDA, but its already being tested out by thousands. Unless you have the weird idea that all the thousand testers are fake, you should have no doubts that AoC exist.
You seem to have issues with an NDA, but you are comformtable with DF which has absolutely nothing but a list of promised features. Is that odd? You think AoC is hiding something b/c it imposed an NDA (while showing the entire game to thousands of players). On the other hand, you think that DF is very cool and top notched hiding behind a smoke screen of words, and denying everybody on earth from looking at its products, b/c of what? Hmm I do not know.
You criticise AoC as simple, linear, non-innovative, as compared to what? Comparing an actual product like AoC to a virtual list of wishes like DF? Hmm is that fair?
Not that I have any idea what DF is all about, or what it will be eventually (come on, who on earth knows?), but its unfair to use DF as a yardstick to measure anything. Simply put, we know nothing about DF as a product. Nothing. A list of wishingful thinking, with no solid information on how the list is implemented, cannot pass as a final product.

It's tiring, to constantly go over and over the philosophical, Nietzsche'ian 'Real vs. Ideal' debate.

You know the only reason the thread was made because one went up in the DF forums similar. OP just wanted to detract from the shit hitting the fan there, and reaction was just to post the same thing aimed at AoC here. Except didn't work..

I made a post asking Darkfall people (the hardcore followers) if they were upset about how Aventurine were handling the PR and fan relations for a game that many have waited for years for.
I was curious about it because they had linked the Warcry response to comments made by a Mr. Flambouras, right there in their fourms. I read the Darkfall forums, AoC forums, and several other forums of games I follow off and on.
I guess the OP took it as some kind of attack? It wasn't. So, I suppose he posted this here as some kind of counter attack? Which is why the title and the questions of the OP don't really make much sense.
Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day. Give a fish a man and he will eat for a month!
Well I'm going to reserve judgement. I do think if they don't have some type of open beta and lift the NDA by May then I for one will wait and see how the release goes before i waste another 50 bucks just to add to my bottom drawer MMO graveyard of shame that has grown significantly this past year or so. People have every reason to be cautious about buying into the MMO hype that has been keeping this genre alive at the expense of alot of pissed off customers lately. That may not be the fault of AoC but it's a reality they have to deal with. If they try to sell this thing on hype and mystery and don't lift the NDA or have an open beta that doesn't exactly inspire confidence. At this point what you see is what your going to get anyway. A month is not enough time to make any drastic changes anyway so the whole "it's still beta" thing is about over at this point.
Although I dont like AoC this is well.. making people pissed :P
And about the negativ inpact in the genre, well I think it wont have any impact on the genre.
Ok, lets make up a scenario.
Lets say that the game dont live up to the hype they created.
Do you think it will be something good for the MMORPG genre?
Selling so many pre-orders without enough info on the game is unethical to me. Its selling something most dont have a clue of. Its ripping them off if game dont deliver to the hi expectations. Its not playing with open cards.
I think people who believe hype are a problem to themselves. For those of us who don't buy into hype, it is nice to have people who do believe in hype. They are like canon fodder.
Cheated.....no.Frustrated...very. I have been an active AOC board member for 2 1/2 years.Has Funcome kept their word about recognizing such loyalty.....NO. Will I play the game with out trying it...not unless I read extensive credible reviews.NET NET...we have all been down this "now you see it ,now you don't" road.My VG scars are still healing and Funcom will not have their chance to add others.
So let me get this straight, you are sour because you didn't get into beta? Cry me a river.
People are sour because they didn't get into beta. People are sour because they don't like the PvP weekend. People are sour because the open beta doesn't meet their standards.
Why not stop whining about a game you never played and wait until release to pass judgement based on GAMEPLAY? Everything I have heard and know has lead me to believe this game will be successful. I was in the LoTRO beta, and there was more hate during the beta by beta users than I can shake a stick at, and yet, it was and is now a very successful game.
In a way it's good, maybe the whiners will stay away which will leave a better community. Just because some of you people are bitter about past games doesn't mean you should fire from the hip about future games created by different companies.

Well if you read up on all other threads made last days id say many seems to feel if not cheated at least a bit disappointed about how certain areas is developing. NDA is still in. The so called "open beta" you will have to pay 15$ for and still not 100% sure you will be able to enter. And this "open beta" is just a teaser not the whole game. You can go to lvl 13. What will you not be able to test out of the game-mechanics?There is alot of unanswered questions arround like what computer will i need to be able to play the game descent, and will it be a lagfeast no matter what computer i buy? Is everything included in the game and if not what have been removed? Questions Funcom could answer if they wanted. But theyre not.
I dont like Funcoms business model. They hype AoC through the roof and then deliver very little info on the game. Loads of pre-orders based on hype, not ingame-experience. Have a open beta so all can make a decision if this is a game for me or not. And remove NDA asap. I see Funcom as the greediest game-company ever so far and that wont change before i see some major improvements on how they treat there future subs. How can they make a arrangement that you have to pay money for a so called "open beta" which infact is a little teaser to level 13 is above me?
Will Funcoms treatment of their subs hurt the MMORPG genre is still a question unanswered as i see it.
Will you as a pre-ordering sub feel cheated if game dont live up to the hype especially since there is so little information delivered about the playable game that will be released 20th of May? Bugs unknown of, lagissues, is everything in the game as promised? Loads of questions that Funcom need to answer before taking a cent from anyone as i see it.

1) 15$ = Lie. I don't know how often I've had to squash that, but it is 7.90$, not 15$. Get your facts straight and flame about truths, not lies. (Yes yes, it might still be bad, but I hate it when people put out false information and then flame with them)
2) It is a stress test. As stated in the official letter, FunCom will be able to get all the data they need from those Levels. LotrO had a similar Beta in that respect. You were limited.
3) Open Beta is not there for you to have a Free Trial. Quit confusing Free Trial vs. Open Beta. Open beta is for Stress Testing Servers and things like that. You still don't have to pay a dime before you actually try out the game or read a review. After it launches, May 20th. No one is forcing you to buy anything before that.
4) You must have been blind to the whole Business world for a long time. Apart from the fact that you are paying File-Planet, not FC for this Beta. Not to say Eidos (Publisher) won#t get a cut of the deal, but again, you are making single-minded statements.
5) No. If I pre-order, that is a chance I take. And you don#t even have to keep your pre-order up. If you feel, for whatever reason, that AoC might not deliver, cancel your pre-order, no harm done. Why you keep bringing this point up is beyond me.
6) Indeed. If you feel you cannot trust FC, as I stated above, do not Pre-order, wait until the game is released. That way, you won't have to deal with Bugs, nor with Level-Caps, nor with anything else. There will most likely be a free trial eventually. If not, find a Buddy-Key. Each CE comes with 5 of those and each Standard Edition with 1. There'll be plenty of Trials around. Have a look. Judge for yourself.
And quit making up stories.
You continue to treat this matter as though FC is putting a gun to your chest, forcing you to play Beta, or that you will somehow be unable to try the game, other than through this Beta (although before that it was the Prayer Contest and the PvP Weekend).
Fact of the matter is, don't pay if you don't feel it's worth it and wait until you can see for yourself. That has not changed, nor will it change, no matter how often this sort of thing is posted.
Edit:: This in no way implies I like the model FC/Eidos is using for their Open Beta. What I like even less is people hyping the negativity of it and trying to put out blatant lies to make the "game" look bad.

Wasnt trying to lie, and aye your right, didnt have all facts concerning this, I read some other reply where he mentione this sum. No matter the sum, having to pay for a teaser is bad.

So there will be a open beta later where you can try out the whole game?
3) Open Beta is not there for you to have a Free Trial. Quit confusing Free Trial vs. Open Beta. Open beta is for Stress Testing Servers and things like that. You still don't have to pay a dime before you actually try out the game or read a review. After it launches, May 20th. No one is forcing you to buy anything before that.
Lets hope they removed NDA before may 20th then. As i see it they isnt informing people cause they fear people will remove their pre-orders and it will hurt their finances. But i might be wrong.
4) You must have been blind to the whole Business world for a long time. Apart from the fact that you are paying File-Planet, not FC for this Beta. Not to say Eidos (Publisher) won#t get a cut of the deal, but again, you are making single-minded statements.
I bet File-Planet payed Funcom some money for being able to deliver this teaser.
5) No. If I pre-order, that is a chance I take. And you don#t even have to keep your pre-order up. If you feel, for whatever reason, that AoC might not deliver, cancel your pre-order, no harm done. Why you keep bringing this point up is beyond me.
Its very less risk people start removing their preorders if problems with the game isnt known for the public.
Everyting except the sum of 15$ i mentioned in earlier reply is reasonable questions about this game and not trolling nor flaming unneccessary.
You continue to treat this matter as though FC is putting a gun to your chest, forcing you to play Beta, or that you will somehow be unable to try the game, other than through this Beta (although before that it was the Prayer Contest and the PvP Weekend).
I treat Funcom the way they reserves to be treated, nothing else.
Fact of the matter is, don't pay if you don't feel it's worth it and wait until you can see for yourself. That has not changed, nor will it change, no matter how often this sort of thing is posted.
They is selling the game on hype and not letting people see the game for themself except bits and pieces and a few selected ones in closed beta. NDA is still up and loads of questions about the rumours from beta-leaks unanswered. Bad policy all over. And making the MMORPG genre locking worse then ever. Pay for a teaser, whats that?
Edit:: This in no way implies I like the model FC/Eidos is using for their Open Beta. What I like even less is people hyping the negativity of it and trying to put out blatant lies to make the "game" look bad.
I understand youre not defending this. And nothing i mentioned earlier were lies. Its facts about the state of game and the "progress". As i see it theyre trying to rip people off that preordered something on hype. You can say its their own fault buying something they have no clue of but with NDA on and not being able to play the game will keep the hype up til 20th of May and the boxes will be shipped. Remove NDA, open up the full game so people can try it out before paying a cent is the only descent thing to do.
(Yes yes, it might still be bad, but I hate it when people put out false information and then flame with them)
Wasnt trying to lie, and aye your right, didnt have all facts concerning this, I read some other reply where he mentione this sum. No matter the sum, having to pay for a teaser which isnt a real open beta as i see it is bad.
2) It is a stress test. As stated in the official letter, FunCom will be able to get all the data they need from those Levels. LotrO had a similar Beta in that respect. You were limited.

Dude.. Funcom doesn't owe you anything. No game owes you a full preview before you buy it. Why don't you go to the store and say 'Hey, i'd like to play Crysis for a week and decide if I should buy it.'
People have seriously skewed what an Open Beta is, and think that they deserve something from the developers. That is not how the world works. THE DEVELOPERS need YOU to test their game. If they decide they don't need you then they won't have a beta.
They have already said THE NDA WILL BE LIFTED at which point everyone can talk about everything regarding the game. There will be nothing hidden, and you will not have sacrificed anything. RELAX, RELAX, RELAX, and take some deep breaths. Everything is going to work out just fine.
You say there isn't enough info out, and progress is slow? and you wait on DARKFALL? Give me a break...
Eventhough there's a whole LOT of info on the game, the reason we don't get more is because of the NDA, which, stated by funcom, is going to be lifted long before the release date... Plz waiting on Darkfall and writing stuff like this is hilarious.
A lot of gaming market strategies include the free trial after the hype of the game is dying down and thy want to entice more folks in.
Funcom doesn't owe anyone anything. They think they know what will work for them. This is what they are rolling out.
Was I disappointed when I didn't get into Beta after being on the forums for a couple years? Sure. Was I frustrated that they wouldn't allow an update of the DXDiags later in the life of the forum accounts? Yep. Was I slightly bummed when I logged into gamespot a few minutes ago and got the definitive ' You didn't make the PvP weekend' notice? You bet. Did the idea of a semi-open beta bother me? No, I use file planet for other games and have a sub with them so I skated by this issue not that the sub locks me into the OB. But it should be noted that I am disappointed every time I check my lottery tickets too.
I made the decision a long time ago to play AoC. I’m bored with the other games out there. I might have decided differently if WAR were coming out in June as it was originally slated, but that ‘just ain’t so’. Playing AoC now was a decision I made. Folks who are ranting negatively have made their decision to not play. Folks who are sitting back to wait for the review (and there will be many of those in the next 30-40 days, yep you betcha) have made their decision. Why keep fighting over it? The ranters aren’t going to change peoples minds. The folks who think AoC will change the world for the better aren’t either (we can call them zealots to be polite).
I think it will be a good game but I am taking a chance by paying up front and playing from Day 1. That was my decision. It’s a lottery. Such is life.

Actually, WoW gives a 7 days trials. And their open beta was really open. Serious companies do that. Of course, if you dont want to hide some things.
If you like it, you buy it. Else is not for you, No test = no trust. End of story.
The FP subscription to get the beta, and all GS drama, really smell bad.
So there will be a open beta later where you can try out the whole game? I bet File-Planet payed Funcom some money for being able to deliver this teaser.
A: Open Beta is not a teaser, it's purpose has nothing to do with you trying anything out. It's actually not for you benefit at all. The fact that it gives Beta tester the oppurtunity to see the game in action is at best a happy side effect. The Open Beta exist so the company can stress test the game, and believe me if they didn't need 50k people to stress test, you wouldn't get anything as there'd be nothing in it for the company.
B: It's funny that you call Open Beta a teaser (which it isn't) while simulataniously arguing that they should let you play test whole game, as that is not by definition what a teaser is. So you have two points, both wrong, which aren't even consistant with each other.
C: FunCom has made no bones about the fact that they went with FilePlanet because FilePlanet's paid subscriptions cover the cost associated with hosting the Beta (in other word: FilePlanet makes money of subscriptions so doesn't have to charge FunCom/Eidos to host the Beta, where as if they hosted it themselves, or hosted it somewhere that didn't charge, FunCom/Eidos would have to pay for it.)
I'd also like to point out that FunCom/Eidos is in fact not making you pay for Beta, they are simply having it hosted on a paid subscription service... like a show that broadcasts on HBO, your paying HBO not The Sopranos, even if The Sopranos is why you got HBO. Which bring me to my next point: If you subscribe to FilePlanet just for the AoC Beta, you are a FRICKEN MORON. I garauntee you that there are already 50,000 FilePlanet subscribers who where already subscribed before the Beta was announced who are going to be interested in the AoC Beta. If you spend money for the AoC Beta, all your buying is the chance, not the garauntee to participate in something that isn't worth any money to begin with.
Bottum line here is that you feel cheated, not because FunCom/Eidos is cheating you, but because you feel it's their responsibility to keep you from cheating yourself. Your base argument seems to be that you don't feel that you can make an informed decision whether or not to buy AoC based on the information you have. That is a completely reasonable arguement. But you unstated assumption is that you have to buy AoC, which is just idiot consumerism at work. AoC may or not be the next "in" thing, but you don't have to buy into it either way. Only you can make the descision of how informed you need to be to buy AoC, and clearly your not there yet, so don't buy it. Wait it, out, get informed, then buy it... or don't. It's free market, your in control here, if you've been cheated it's only because you won't take responsibility for your own spending which makes you, not Funcom/Eidos, the problem... and the reason we're in a rescession.

And see... that yet another example of perfactly valid opinion writen as uncontestable fact. If the above is the basis on which you make you decision, that 100% awesome. The problem is that you say:
"If you like it, you buy it. Else is not for you, No test = no trust. End of story."
Instead of:
"If I like it, I buy it. Else is not for me, No test = no trust. That's my policy"
You see the diffrance? The second is a valid opinion, the first one is you calling everyone who doesn't agree with you wrong. I don't understand why this is such a hard concept to grasp.
The situation is very simple: if someone is keen or desperate enough to want to check out (or god forbid, help stress-test) AoC for three weeks before full release they can pay to do so. If they don't want to pay, they don't have to. There's no doubt it's shameless revenue garnering, but the fact is Conan is the most hyped and most heavily awarded MMO on the horizon for quite some time, so they can afford to wring out a few extra bucks from would-be players.
They're gambling that those who do opt in, having had to pay for the privilege, will be even more critical that usual open beta testers and if they find the game in an unfit state will not hesitate to say so. To me that suggests confidence rather than under-confidence, a power play rather than a sneaky move to trick you out of your money. Even from the early stages Funcom have always hinted that they felt their game was of a higher level of quality to current MMOs, and they were considering charging a premium rate as a result. This seems to go along with that ethos.
Great to see Aragon100 in here grinding up his post count. Guess the Darkfall forums must be feeling a little lonely now that everyone is leaving that sinking ship for greener sandbox pastures.

Yes, the fact that the NDA is up 4 and a half week before launch, does indeed suggest confidence.

You would think for a simple, linear, non-innovative game like AoC (which I was really excited about playing until recently) that the kinks might be worked out by now... but nope.
I feel great. Better than ever in fact. Glad I pre-ordered.

Guess what? I win either way because I am doing what I love, I am playing an MMO.Any argument that you make about the features of Darkfall are just plain silly.
Why not?
Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day. Give a fish a man and he will eat for a month!

You would think for a simple, linear, non-innovative game like AoC (which I was really excited about playing until recently) that the kinks might be worked out by now... but nope.

It's tiring to constantly go over and over the philosophical 'Real vs. Ideal' debate.
You know the only reason the thread was made because one went up in the DF forums similar. OP just wanted to detract from the shit hitting the fan there, and reaction was just to post the same thing aimed at AoC here. Except didn't work..
well put Orthedos
They are like canon fodder.
the hype was correct about at least 2 games C&C:RA and C&C:RA 2
At least for those who like those types of games.
Online games are a hit or miss sort of genere.
I'd rather wait another year to play Darkfall than wait 1 day to play a nerfed AoC that clearly isn't ready for launch. The longer that NDA stays up the more it shows how badly this game is progressing.
You would think for a simple, linear, non-innovative game like AoC (which I was really excited about playing until recently) that the kinks might be worked out by now... but nope.

Which Final Fantasy Character Are You?
Final Fantasy 7

Well stated. I was thinking the same thing but couldn't put it as well as you did.
1) 15$ = Lie. I don't know how often I've had to squash that, but it is 7.90$, not 15$. Get your facts straight and flame about truths, not lies. (Yes yes, it might still be bad, but I hate it when people put out false information and then flame with them)
Wasnt trying to lie, and aye your right, didnt have all facts concerning this, I read some other reply where he mentione this sum. No matter the sum, having to pay for a teaser is bad.
2) It is a stress test. As stated in the official letter, FunCom will be able to get all the data they need from those Levels. LotrO had a similar Beta in that respect. You were limited.
So there will be a open beta later where you can try out the whole game?
3) Open Beta is not there for you to have a Free Trial. Quit confusing Free Trial vs. Open Beta. Open beta is for Stress Testing Servers and things like that.

Its very less risk people start removing their preorders if problems with the game isnt known for the public.

Everyting except the sum of 15$ i mentioned in earlier reply is reasonable questions about this game and not trolling nor flaming unneccessary.

I don't understand why this is such a hard concept to grasp.

with the way beta week-end was handled
Yes I feel cheated
