Chill out. If you don't want to help pay for the bandwidth usage then don't freaking PLAY. It's that simple.
Someone has to pay for the terabyte of bandwidth this is gonna take.
And it's not like it's unusual. These days almost every MMOG does this.
Talk about a stupid subject for the trolls, haters and AoC bashers to jump on.

oh well...it may be just 8$ but other mmos managed it without these. LotR 3-4 day beta was free too...and pretty much any other beta i played before was open and free. i wont be playing it cause i find it ridiculous to say its open when this actually isnt. I m very disappointed by funcom once again. I do understand absolutly that there is massiv costs for so much bandwidth but they could have managed this differently. its sad but i wont pay for an undone game that only will last for what....1 week? c mon...i rather buy myself a new manga and have it forever...

All I hear is blah blah blah I'm a dirty tramp. Dude, do you have sand in your vagina or something? You better close your legs because I can see your vagina from here. Go ahead and by yourself another SWEET awesome MANGA that you can have forever.. I mean isn't half the fun ro play MMOs (or any game for that matter) when it IS released? If you cannot afford this game and realize down the road that you don't like it, then I would go to assume that you're not old enough to even be playing it!

Everything these days are a money gouge and its up to the consumers to be stupid enough to fall victim (like me and all the Halo 3 hype.. do you have your helmet?? Well I DO!/// sigh    *cry*).

    @ silentbullshiter:

thank you for your mature answer, really.  if you didnt get what i was refering to with the "manga" than better just shut your mouth and dont play the smart ass cause your obviously not smart for giving such a low life comment to something i just wrote.  What i ment was that paying 8$ just for the chance of getting into the beta is ridiculous if you ask me. I rather spend these 8$ on some materialistic stuff that i can keep my hands on for as long as i want to. i hope you get the difference even though i m not too sure you do...

Maybe there was no other way of distributing the beta but still they could have at least just said its closed beta and invited these people...and you know they could have invested a bit more money into "compressing" their data into smaller pieces like instead of 20+ gig sizes , into -10gig sizes...and yeah that is possible...Rockstar games pulls that off pretty much everytime they bring out a GTA game.

p.s. before i show you my pussy ( i bet it would be the first one you see in your life ) you should get the stick ouf of your ass first of all.

You know there is still people that are called students and dont earn too much cash to be spending it on 8$ chances...you could also go to the casino and throw your money out there...most likely the same bullshit. 8$ can be a lot of money at various times. but beeing someone who is earning less money doesnt mean you have less interest in testing out the game. At least i hope there will be a trial period of 1 week or so when it was released...it would be more than stupid to leave that out...

    Paying for Open Beta?!?!

    .......................

I know you will continue to discuss this aspect of it as we move on, and some of you are / will even be angry about it. Please, don’t be, this is a BETA, it is for TESTING Age of Conan BEFORE the LAUNCH.

In short words: Pay Funcom/Fileplanet for the chance for working for them.

When the game is published you pay the monthly fee for the developers to make their job.

With this paid open beta you pay them to work for them.

    Georgeous!

This is hilarious. You're all so fixated on whether you have to pay for the "open" beta or not  that you're missing the rather important question of whether the game is actually going to be any good. Let's just say that from "what I hear" the tech tests have so far been a complete shambles with most testers not even being able to login.

I really REALLY hope I'm wrong but I'm forecasting a launch disaster of Vanguard-esque proportions. Nothing I've "heard" so far makes me think this game is anywhere near finished.

The way Fileplanet works means that you will have to eventually pay, yes. This is not something we control, but please be aware that distributing, organizing and preparing such an activity is something extremely few gaming sites can cope with. I am not sure how well versed you are in the cost of internet downloads or what it takes to set things like this up, but I assure you, the Conan beta has a definitive cost for Fileplanet as well. Not just for the Peta byte of data going out, but for setting this whole thing up. When we started to look for a partner for Open Beta we didn’t have to think even twice, as IGN / Fileplanet are the best ones in the world on that. Simple as that. Extremely few companies are able to host and arrange something like this on the scale they do it. For us, to know that our partner can be fully trusted on everything from customer service to download speeds, was of the essence. Why we didn’t do it all ourselves? We have up until this point, tens of thousands have been selected, and we for sure will to a greater degree some weeks from now. But…as we move into final push we need final push attention too. Simple as that.

I know you will continue to discuss this aspect of it as we move on, and some of you are / will even be angry about it. Please, don’t be, this is a BETA, it is for TESTING Age of Conan BEFORE the LAUNCH. You do not have to sign up for this, it is voluntary. There is no god given right that everyone who wants should get access to a beta, remember that we are only trying to make the best possible game for launch, and the best partner we could find for that part of the Beta was Fileplanet. Age of Conan doesn’t start 1st of May, it starts when we launch. I hope I don’t come across as harsh here, we do love you guys and girls (group hug everyone) but please also understand our choices.

    Best regards

    Jørgen Tharaldsen

    Product Director

Tamikasipke, evidentally you missed the entire point of that post, read above that you do not have a god given right to get into the beta and thank god as people like you wouldn't be there to give any feedback anyway.

It is open beta so please stop quibling about it being for fileplanet customers. I find the 3 pounds it costs each month very worth the amount of downloads I get from it.

Get excited about AoC Open Beta instead of complaining or shut this thread down.

    don't worry, you're wrong, and mis-informed.

Not many want to actually pay for a mmo before they try it. Thats one reason why they offer trials and true open beta's.  This is not an open beta... but a paid beta.

For fc to pawn this task on someone else, "fileplanet", should make you think about(at least) two things.

    1) they are busy with finsihing up beta; meaning they have lots of work to do. Not necessarily a good thing  if they are so busy they can't handle their own beta...

    2) Budget. By allowing fileplanet to charge people the blame goes to them. Yes there are other sites giving away keys, but the main distributor is fileplanet...

my 2 cents, but they would get more pre-orders in if they would let it be a true beta like most mmo's which i imagine they will do eventually... but not before pissing off a huge pool of potential subscribers...

Have to agree with above poster about not many want to purchase a new online game BEFORE actually having a play test.

For that, you can only blame all the lame pieces of utter buggy, unfinished crap that has been constantly released with only a minor majority being playable. Most have been utterly dissapointing and left you wondering why you bought that piece of trash in the first place. After the last 2 i bought, i will not just go out and buy a new online game without playtesting it (or waiting at least 2 months) or so after its initial release to have some sort of game feedback. That method is not good though, 1. If the game was ok, you will be left far far behind, if its a pvp game you will be fuxxored with teh gankers and campers. 2. If something new is due for release you may well hold off longer.
