I have been away from the MMORPG genre for a year, and since my return, it seems that it has not progressed in the way I had thought.
I have been into role-playing games of all types since way back when I was a kid, and when I first played a MMO, I thought I had stumbled upon the answer to my gaming prayers. The game was EQ2, and at first I thought that I would have a gaming experience akin to the old days of my AD&D past. However, I soon discovered that there was very little immersion in the story, and instead of role-play, people tended to talk in jargon, more interested in stats and gear.
Thinking that this was maybe just that particular game, I tried others, including WoW, CoH, FFXI, L2, to name but a few.
It was incredibly frustrating, as instead of feeling immersed in those worlds, I just got the impression that my goal was to level, get better gear, etc. Where was the sense of story that would draw me into the game? Single player rpg's such as Baldur's Gate 2 managed it, so why couldn't a dev produce a persistent world that had the same sense of story and drama as that?
Now, I have heard quite a few things in regards to Lord of the Rings, and it sounds promising. Immersive quests, that are not the generic 'find this, kill that' variety, but actual story-arcs, which can be played with your friends, and give the same feeling of verismilitude that single player rpg's create.
Is this just hype? I would be interested in knowing your experiences of this game before I go out and buy it. Both good and bad. Also, as I have given an example of the type of gaming experience I enjoy, do you think that I will finally find it with LotR? (And can you tell me how the quests work, do they have cut-scenes, etc?)
Like I said, I welcome anyone's opinion, so that I can make a valued judgement about buying this game. Also is it worth dropping a sub to one of the games I listed above, in favour of this one?

I think the only way LotRO works the way you wish is for you to :
* Play on Landrovol
* Join a HEAVY Rold-Play Guild
* Role-Play 100% of the time
* Disable general chat channels
Otherwise, LotRO is pretty much the same as all the others.
Good Hunting
I play it casually, love every minute of it. Even the PvMP, which while hardcore pvprs say its pretty much useless, i enjoy it because you can jump right in as a level 50 creep, or grind your main toon up and pvp at lvl 40.
It's a simplistic, yeah beautifully made game with rich stories and graphics. But it is not for the power leveler/hardcore mmorpg person in that there is no endgame to rush to (only 2 in game raids atm if i remember correctly) but the time to get there is pretty fun. 2 months i have a lvl 21 guardian and lvl 14 captain...no complaints yet...other than i work too damn much in real life!
Best advice i can give you, try the 7 day trial (www.lotro.com), or if you like, just pm me your email, and give you a referral key for 10 days.

If youre just looking for good questing and you like single player RPGs, then you should enjoy LOTRO for a while. Theres lots of lore and story (obviously) to the different local quests and the "chapter" quests follow your progression through the game. Of course, like most MMO's, there are plenty of kill task quests out there as well. Best thing would be to give it a shot and try to find a like minded guild.
Also, I'm sure youve figured it out by now, but youre not going to find an MMO that will replace the old PnP experience. At least, not anytime soon.
Not true at all..i have pretty much 0 roleplay skills, am in a tiny (10) person kinship which me and a friend started, and general chat is alot better than any other mmo out there. The thing that sets it apart is the lore, graphics, and maturity of the people (for the most part) who play. Oh and finding areas which were in the movie is a huge bonus for me i was loving sitting on top of weathertop the other day

I'm also an old time Pen & Paper RP-er. I've played alot of MMO's and I have to say that you can pretty much play the style of game you are talking about as long as you find the right group of people to play with.
That said, some MMO's are geared more toward that play style then others. I would say that LOTRO is pretty high on the scale in support of a good RP environment. You really do need to find a good RP oriented Kin though.....and of course, like any MMO there is a segment of players that you will need to ignore.....but I'd say that the general LOTRO audience is more supportive of RP then most games I've encountered.
Note that if you don't care much about graphics...text based MUDS tend to be very RP oriented as well. That is something you may want to look into exploring.
Lord of the Rings Online isn't what I'm looking for, but I can say that I experienced roleplaying that is miles ahead of the roleplaying I've seen in any other game. The community was much more friendly, mature and helpful than your average MMO. I have fond memories of players stopping along their journeys to say hi, after which we'd have a quick chat...just because we could.
Your mileage will vary. For myself (a PnP'er for 20 years) I did not find myself immersed in the LOTRO world...reason is the story is already written...and you cannot make any impact upon this setting.
All MMO's will be like this as well. The true Roleplay is when you control the aspects of your character. LOTRO has a limited selection of classes and race's and a very linear gameplay style.
True sandbox will be where it is at, and until that time when that game comes along you will be better off searching for a RP guild in whatever game FIRST, form a friendship with them, THEN play the game they play...
Look at the guild sections of some of the games here and see if one fits the bill...or try Guildcafe and do a search for RP'ers
Good luck
Good points. I'd have to agree.
I know what you mean when you want an MMO with a story, and this is your game. This game follows a story with whatever race you pick, and you go through story events and quests that keep everything interested and making you want to watch, just like a real movie. This game does how some quests where you have to go kill monsters and get their pelts, but that's all in good fun until you get to the really fn quests; which happen frequently and quick. So give it a try, I know you want to.
Go back to Everquest 2. So much has improved with Rise of Kunark. Play on Antonia Bayle server. Try to get in Phalanx guild. Roleplay to your hearts content. Say goodbye to the real world. See ya in Norrath! Nuff said. Thank me later.....
The highlighted red portion says it all. Games like EQ2 are designed to supercede our time constraints of real life in order to provide the illusion of entertainment while in reality it is only endorsing obsessive play styles with hours and hours of single sitting play.
The part that makes me giggle the most.................after three years of 40+ hours of play per week, the person burns out and spends months of ping pong time bouncing from game to game trying to get that "first high" all over again, then they wonder why they can't.

Good point in the last part of your post...the "ping pong"...yet, I know I have built up a resistance to these games that I will never feel the same unless something new or "WOW...check that out" happens...Luckily EQ2 did do this for me...I was able to enjoy a game again...not like my first, but more like a "This is pretty good, and keeps me occupied..."
As to the say goodbye...I play about 2 hours a night during the week...maybe an hour in the mornings...and maybe more on the weekends...and can keep my family, and my life...no obsession here.
But, the difference between EQ2 and LOTRO...I always like to log back into EQ2..always something new or different to do
Later
LOTRO is a great game to play! The only thing i didnt like about it was enormous amount of chain quests.
Played : WOW, LOTRO, COH/COV, EQ2, SWG, and WAR.
Playing EVE Online and AOC.
Wtg for SW:TOR and WOD
Yeah, I've noticed that as well. It definitely seems a bit odd why someone has made their point about not liking a particular game for whatever reason continually and I mean continually coming back to beat the proverbial dead horse over and over again.

Boils down to having an open mind on the subject. As people come in and ask a question, they will of course get all the "fans" stating their positives.I like to be able to play "devils advocate" and make sure the opposing viewpoint is here as well. Just like I have with Vanguard, Tabula Rasa, and even EQ2.
The difference is many others also come into the threads for the above mentioned games and give their opposing viewpoints...and each person can handle it. It seems the LOTRO "fans" cannot, and will jump on any opposing point and attack the poster...instead of the points that were made...big difference..
So, until the threads for LOTRO look like the above games threads, I have a right to post here, just as any other "fan" or "opposer" does.
Now, can we get back on the main subject?

See that's the big difference with a lot of us posters here. We play a game... decide we like it or not... and that's the end of it. Take me for example... I used to play EQ2 for 1.5 - 2 years and then Vanguard... now I play LoTRo. I've played LoTRo since the very beginning of Open Beta, and haven't went back to anything else since.Take a wild guess on how many posts I've made in the EQ2 forums since I stopped playing and started playing LoTRo? Take a wild guess on how many posts I've made in the Vanguard forums since I stopped playing? Yup... zero.
I didn't post the whole... "I'm leaving blah, blah, blah" thread either. What's the point? Does anyone even really read those anyway?
They just come off as such a cry for attention. See, that's how posters that no longer play... yet continue to post... come off. A cry for attention. Geesh... it's just a game. Play to have fun... or not. Some people just like the attention I guess.

LOL!
I'll take you up on that claim. I dare you to show us even a 10-1 ratio of these "opposing viewpoints" you claim for EQ2. Since you said it... it's obviously true... right?
So, giving you the huge advantage of 10-1 should be easy then. So, you post up for us these "opposing viewpoints" that you do for EQ2... and I'll show 10x that amount for LoTRo from you.
See... those of us who know you... we know you play quite the fanboi for EQ2 in it's forums. Which, as long as you keep it to the EQ2 forums is fine. But, to try and tell us that you treat EQ2 the same as you do LoTRo with your "opposing viewpoints". Please... go tell that to someone who might actually believe you.
See... that's also the problem when you get a history like you've gotten for yourself openedge. It lacks credibility on certain forums. For the LoTRo forums... you don't have it... plain and simple. Yeah, you can post here as much as you want (obviously that's true!)... it doesn't mean we have to buy what you're selling though.
For those new to this forum.
Realize that the above comment comes from a poster who didn't make it past the mid 30's with a single character. Also realize that they have said in the past that LoTRo is the most boring MMO they've ever played. The comments also reflect their play from many, many months ago. Oh sure, they have supposedly "tried" it recently... but on a very limited basis... and not enough to base any kind of opinion on what the role-playing community has to offer.
So, while their experiences may or may not have been true many months ago... they most certainly are not valid now. See... that's the thing with MMOs... they progress. Even though an experience may have been true at some time in the past... it will not... and is not... always true.
As for LoTRos Races and Classes... it has the Races you would expect to find after reading the books. All the playable races of the Fellowship are represented in full.
For Classes... all the typical MMO archetypes are represented. As well, with the release of the expansion coming this Fall/Winter there will be two new classes.
The gameplay is seen as linear by some players, but that is going to be a subjective opinion.
If you want a more thorough commentary of what the current game plays like or what you can expect to find... let us know.

I'm sorry but I don't buy his statement about true roleplay.
I've done quite a bit of acting as well as improvisation, especially in situations where the play has no improv but something has gone wrong to warrant it. In this example, the story is obviously linnear but you are required to improvise in order to connect the sections.
Quite frankly, Role play is about creating your own story but there is nothing that says it can't reside in a set of story parameters.
As a matter of fact, there are larger improvised works where the actors are given set situations as well as a variety of set parameters and they "run with it" with the idea that they do have to reach certain story milestones.
So quite frankly, knowing the Lord of the Rings Online, I don't see why there is an issue with this. If I was an avid roleplayer I could easily utilize what was given and "role play". it would not be a problem at all. And I would go so far as to say, if Role players find this difficult and they want to learn more about improvising and the tools associated with it they should take some classes. I think they will find a huge world of tools they can use that will help them in their game play.

Wow, after reading 3 pages of fans bashing OpenEdge I forgot what the OP originally asked. Let's see if I can share some thoughts without being labeled a "troll".
While it is true that LotRO does have some great story arcs that are immersive, you will still find a plethora of "find this, kill that, fetch this" etc quests. But there are some nice variations on them (like the Pie delivery series, which you will either love or hate)
From a role-playing and immersion standpoint, I think LoTRO does a great job of this. Especially in the Shire you really feel like you are there. But the other areas are great too, and nothing is better than your first visit to Rivendell. I won't spoil it by telling you anything here, should be experienced for yourself.
I quit after the first two months, with my highest character at level 30, so I guess some would feel I'm not qualified to have an opinion on the game. Maybe they're right, the game has changed a lot since those days, though the fundamental game play hasn't (which is neither good nor bad, just a matter of taste) which is why I'll not be returning.
It sounds to me like you'd be a really good candidate to enjoy this game, and since there's a free trial I'd recommend you give it a go.

I agree that LOTRO is really good for roleplaying myself, although I hardly do it myself. But even in my casual guild there is a little "clan" who roleplay like there's no tomorrow so I could hop in any time.
Really nice job

Well, to be honest, I don't see why someone who only has 7 levels has any less of a voice than a lvl 30 or a lvl 50.
True, they can't speak about the entire gameplay experience but they can give their opinions based upon those 7 levels.
One thing that LOTRO does not do well is in some cases to create a compelling lower lvl experience. I have to say that it is not clear to the new player that the starter tutorial instance (not the very first story/background instance) isn't the actual game world.
To that end it can seem dry and uninspiring.

Your opinion (opps) is valuable, and since you qualified it with the fact that your opinion is based on a game to lvl 30 and has been "some time" since you played, it allows prospective players to consider that when evaluating your opinion.
But when you opinion goes to the state of the game today and aspects of the game post 30 based on your "expertise" you will be called on it.
