Do you think Mythic will ever make a sequel?

zethcarnzethcarn Member UncommonPosts: 1,558

DAoC is a pretty good game, although I don't play it anymore.  I'm currently awaiting the releases of EQ2 and WoW.  Frankly, I feel if Mythic wants to have a chance at staying competitive in the mmorpg market they will need to make a sequel (and probably with better graphics, maybe even voice overs), sooner or later.  And I hope they do because it's a pretty good game and theme.  So what do you think?

Doubtful since they already have another game in the works.

    Imperator

They will likely just keep releasing expansions. Perhaps when DAoC actually "dies"(which wont be for awhile, we see with games like planetside/shadowbane they can still survive on a few servers)they may make a sequal/prequal. But theres really no indepth lore to the game. It's "the 3 realms hate eachother and each realm also has a big NPC enemy".

So either they will have to pull a big storyline out of there butts or it will be just a "continuation" of the first.

Sequels really don't make sense for MMORPG's, a game company could release exp pack after pack, and upgraded enginge after engine so the game is it's own sequel so to speak.

Although mudflation takes it's toll the longer a game runs and at some point you have 10 times the number of zones as you do players. Games can/should only get so large, once that point is hit it's counter productive to keep adding new zones. Game updates can come by other means.

I'm aware EQ2 is called EQ2, but it's not really a sequel. Your character doesn't get to transfer along, you just playing a new game with a few similar proper nouns.

Will mythic make DAoC2, no. Unlike Verant, Mythic is thinks a bit more of you than to delute the brand for additional revenue.

hey thats a good post but I disagree with a few things.  Take EverQuest for example, they released several expansions and people starting seeing it as "milking an old cow" while they can, not to mention everytime you release more zones you are making other zones more dead.  At least 75% of EQs zones are uninhabitated at any given time, which makes the world as a whole feel more empty, at least to me. Another thing to consider is the prospect of a sequel will create a lot more hype. Sometimes starting over is better and they only choice you have, as in EQs case. I guarntee you they are losing more people than they are gaining especially with WoW as competition. Just my 2 cents.

One other thing I wanted to add.  If there was such a thing as a "perfect" mmorpg then no there would never be a reason for a sequel but thats really NOT the case for EQ or any mmorpg IMO.

I posted this 3 years ago and while Warhammer is not a sequel it might as well be

Gosh, three years and so few replies eh?

Warhammer isn't a sequel, Mythic have been very clear about that, specifically saying "this isn't DAoC 2".

Interestingly I note no-one here remembers what Mythic swore early in DAoC's life "There will be no DAoC 2", they said, instead they promised they'd keep expanding the game until the end of it's life. This actually turned out ot be a pretty poor decision, because by 2004, DAoC was in sore need of a "ground-up" rebuild with new gameplay and class design to correct the accumulated errors/problems, and to update the graphics/interface/server programming.

I sincerely hope that one day Mythic goes back on their word and DOES make a Dark Age of Camelot 2. It did not have in-depth "lore", that's true, but the best way around that is to simply do a "reboot", like Battlestar Galactica on Sci-Fi, or the recent Spiderman movies did. Ignore the old lore, rebuild it from the ground up. The idea of basing realms on Arthurian Mythology, Celtic Mythology and Norse Mythology is basically extremely sound, and DAoC's atmosphere and environment were really, truly unique. Calm, open, and full of a feeling that you're actually in an "outdoor" area. Most modern MMORPGs feel more like you're in some sort of overcrowded, contrived "theme park", with blaring, over-the-top music, bright colours and little in the way of "open" or "quiet" (indeed, one has to go pretty far off the beaten track in WoW to not be in-sight of a half-dozen players or over-the-top mobs).

So I'd hope any sequel retained that feeling, that atmosphere, at least. I seriously doubt we'll see such a thing until WAR has been around for at least 3 years, though.

Imperator is pretty much a dead duck, so that shouldn't get in the way.

So when I respond to a 5-day old post, I'm a necromancer? I think you need to check the post-dates of the post before mine, genius :)

    Hmmm...

I dunno...I kinda like Warhammer. Granted DAoC totally missed me, I never even knew it existed until I heard about WAR and it's Developers. So well... I'd say there is no real need for a DAoC2 if WAR picks up all the good stuff of DAoC and leaves out the bad ones...

One thing I hope for is the pure competitive hatred the Sides have against each other in DAoC...I was really impressed how creative Players can become to bash the opposition:

I even think that the E-Guitar riffs are great.

    Meh, just don't call it DAoC2.  Rather, the 2ndDAoC -- that'll sell much better ( ' :
