The proof about the OB client's age is all there and was, for the most part, clearly stated more than a week ago.
Those should have everything about the age of the OB client. What has been supported, what has not and why.

I dont know what your guy's problem is Im running a Geforce 8800 Go and im getting 40-55 FPS on high with all the special effects except anti aliasing off. If my laptop can run it Any mid range computer shouldnt have a problem.
I also have a tricked out machine with 2 9800 GTX's quadcore 3.2 ghz 8 gigs of ram and I get a solid 64.1 FPS anywhere and everywhere.
Well yes you are right. Funcom has the finished version of AOC , but they decided to make open beta test - that will influence oppinions of thousands of potentional customers , on old and buggy client. And than when 50% of open beta testers decide not to buy the game , convincing their friends and families in process. Than Funcom will whip out "real" client and the people that stuck and had trust in Funcom will benefit from playing AOC in its full shine , and culled of all "non believers" Amen
LOL
They decided to have a large scale OB stress test.
..."For the love of God, well that's just unheard of." lmao
They've said the reasons for the lvl 13 cap, the bugging of some the quests intentionally and the reasons behind the older game client without optimization.
Anything with the word Beta=Test. Your the Tester and you test what the developers want you to, not the other way around.

...textures are non-compressed, so the debugger can do it's job and texture problems can be found/fixed easier ( this is also why the client is bigger than it needs to be ).
...support for dual/quad core processors isn't in the beta build yet ...dx10 is not in the beta build yet
Do you have a link with a dev stating this or is this something you've concluded on your own?
Unfortunately, the links where devs have stated these things are on a forum which is covered by the NDA. So I'm unable to link them, as I value my spot. You'll just have to trust me on this one. Or you can ask on the open beta forums, as I'm sure they'll be happy to respond. More than likely, it'll already be in a FAQ on the open beta forums, but I haven't been there, so I don't know.
The texture compression part is very common place in most all betas though.

Except that means that they aren't stress testing the areas of the game which aren't protected by heavy instancing. Oh, and their reasons for not using the REAL client are weak in my book. Its REAL close to launch, the lazy &%^%*@'s need to be testing the ACTUAL GAME. The one WITH optimization...to be sure its optimized well, and can deal with a TRUE massive amount of players.

They NEED to be stress testing the areas of the game that AREN'T, and I don't know why you and half the fanheads around here can't see that clearly.
Its one thing to believe in something...its another to believe in something to the pure exclusion of common sense and general knowledge.
Good luck to the people waiting on miracle build 2.0.
+1, wonder what Miracle 3.0 will be? This is getting entertaining to say the least, sooo many people getting ripped off my MMO companies these days. Fanbois are so gullible.
It's a beta to Stone and Gaute. I mean they just spent weeks saying so. The community forums seem to agree with them.
Stress test, is not only for the client engine, it's for the server side connectivety under load. The 50k from FP and the rest from other sites win a spot is a large scale test and your payback for the testing is the limited sneak peak.

Ok, i just have a question to throw out to everyone.
Everyone is fighting about the client that is being used and that if this is a Beta test.
My question is this: If this is an old client (not debating if it is or isn't) and we are supposed to be testing something for release of a game, why are we testing something that won't be "IN" release?
Just begs for me to think that we aren't testing anything and Funcom just threw this out to us to shut everyone up about wanting to "See" the game before buying it, just my opinion tho.
just chill out. read a book or something till release or do something more productive but predicting the launch of a game is ludicrous. Not many people were praising wow to become as big as it is today, but it is. Its a multitude of variable's that will never have a formula to success.
plain and simple each game and gaming company chooses to release its open beta for different reasons and different goals, thus no previous mmo's can really compare because its different company's. Finally does anyone remember Anarchy Online beta....
Remember the mysterious DEBBUGER , it sopposedly had in open beta , that was bogging all performance and causing FPS lag ?
How we were told that performance will jump at retail , as soon that they remove DEBUGGER ?
Well it never did, guess why ?
1 month before release. When game is already gold. Thats it. The game is finished. If there is any work to be done , it is in repairing obvious bugs , not performance.
Open beta is more or less a public demo , something to judge how crowd accepts the game.
Its not the beta where they repair the game.
SO
What you see now. This is 99% accurate picture of what AOC is and will be.
actually no..its also a stress test. 50k ppl one 3 servers = alot of stress
I'm more inclined to believe the OP. Doesn't Funcom have special Tech Testers for their "stress tests"? The so called Open Beta is usually or players to test the near final build of the game, not to stress test. That would be a terrible marketing scheme, and no company wants to turn away potential subscribers when they have to complete with WoW. So in that reasoning, I think that AoC is not going to have a very good release, but I'm keeping in touch. Not giving up yet (Funcom proved it can turn a piece of crap into gold with Anarchy Online, but I'm not willing to wait that long. AoC needs to be polished any ready by May 20, or it should be delayed again).
My question is this: If this is an old client (not debating if it is or isn't) and we are supposed to be testing something for release of a game, why are we testing something that won't be "IN" release?
Stress Test is for server loads
I agree tho,
its confusing to expect people to report bugs
if those same bugs have already been fixed in later clients
Once again here's the important reference; ..."The Product Director went on to say that “running the Age of Conan beta is and will remain an expense, as it should be for us as developers. The focus for us when running a beta is to get invaluable feedback from as many testers as needed, helping us to get ready for launch,"...

You also have to consider the thousands of different computer configurations possible, each one possibly having a conflict with a different bit of code. So the feedback from testers saying "I have such and such cpu, graphic card, sound card, etc. and I'm crashing" allows them to make the base code compatible with that piece of hardware. So there's testing right there.
And for those saying it's not called a test, this is the e-mail every open beta tester recieved, and appropriately highlighted is:
We are happy to invite you to the savage world of Hyboria, and we hope you will have great fun in the next few days. Our servers will open tonight at 2200 GMT / 1700 EST, and from this point on you are free to play as much as you like!
Prior to starting your journey we want to give you some important information about what to expect, and where you can get help should you need it.
First of all, remember that you are playing a beta version of Age of Conan, where we on purpose are stressing our servers to simulate a hectic launch environment. This means that you may experience technical issues as you start playing.
Simulating launch is what final stress testing is all about, but we will monitor all of this closely to make your experience as good as possible.
Since there is no NDA on the Open Beta you are completely free to speak about your experiences in public, and you can also take screenshots and videos should you wish to. Together with IGN we have established forums which will be staffed by Funcom Customer Service and Community representatives. There you can discuss any topic you like. Should you have any questions, or would like the latest upto date info on potential technical issues and solutions, these forums are our main venue for communication for as long as the Open Beta last.
We would ask you to keep in mind that this is not the full and final version of the game. You will get a significant taste of what we have created, and you will be able to play all classes and cultures. You are also able to test our PvP mini-games. To join a match simply the upper left icon with two people, and go to the PvP tab to apply for a match.
Prior to starting your experience you may watch two tutorial videos explaining the combat system and our interface. Links to their location will be found on the IGN forums and on the Age of Conan forums (http://community.ageofconan.com/) later tonight. We advise you to view these videos prior to playing.
We thank you sincerely for your willingness to aid, and your patience should any issues occur. Above all we hope you will have lots of fun as you crush your enemies
I just have to write this. Remember Vanguard Remember the mysterious DEBBUGER , it sopposedly had in open beta , that was bogging all performance and causing FPS lag ? How we were told that performance will jump at retail , as soon that they remove DEBUGGER ? Well it never did, guess why ? 1 month before release. When game is already gold. Thats it. Its not the beta where they repair the game.
SO What you see now. This is 99% accurate picture of what AOC is and will be.
Vanguard was a coding mess due to no management or direction from Brad McQuaid.
In AoC, it is the debugger. if you run the game from the .exe file in your AoC folder instead of the patcher, you will see the dos box come up and see the debugger compiling as you wait for the game to load.
Another issue wuth the lag is that the textures are non-compressed, so the debugger can do it's job and texture problems can be found/fixed easier ( this is also why the client is bigger than it needs to be ).
Also, the 3.0 shaders take a while to compile in debug mode ( I kick the shaders down to 2.0 and get a much faster load/compile time ), which is where the stutter when you enter new areas comes from.
Also, support for dual/quad core processors isn't in the beta build yet, SLI compatibility is not in the beta build yet, and dx10 is not in the beta build yet. This is one reason I get better performance with my 3 year old computer than those with brand new multi-core comps with dx10 graphic cards.
This is beta. These are things that are being dealt with in beta. You've known me on this site for many years. I'm one of the most critical and negative people on this site when it comes to devs and new games, Lobo. I wouldn't say this game looks to have a good chance of making a smooth release if I didn't believe it myself.
im my task manager, it looks as if all 4 cores are being utilized. i see a load on each of them.
perhaps the debugger is causing lag, memory leak issues and such.
i cannot fathom, logically, why they would use an old build. why subject us to poorer performance? im sure a stress is not needed with an old build. why?
ill try to lower my shader to 2.0.
this game is frustrating after time goes by. starts good, but gets worse. I remember that happening with vanguard- shivers.
will we get the 'new build' before beta closes? i would like to purchase this game but cannot until i see better performance on my rig.

I'm thinking that more than likely the open testers over the next weeks will be downloading patches that have already passed testing on the closed beta client. From what I understand, there have been a few patches handed down already.
I really want to like this game, trust me, but it just seems to me that Funcom is hiding alot of stuff. It just seems odd that they would do this "Open Beta" and then still have a closed (with NDA still intact mind you) Beta along side of it. Like I said, i want to like this game, but Funcom won't let me. Guess i am too cautious after the last few MMORPG releases.

I am in the closed beta and have been for many months now, Our NDA was just dropped as well so your facts are wrong.
I'll have to say I've beta tested near every mmorpg out there and there are no miracle patches. What you see toward the end of better is what you get on release. In fact in my experience things tend to be worse in release like 50% of the time as little problems seems to blossum into bigger problems and they try to jam in a bunch of last minute fixes including a healty serving of bugs. I'm afraid AoC will be no exception and probably worse. I mean think about it the game isn't feature complete at this time. They are still adding major game play systems and it is what 3-4 weeks from release?
I've never seen a single beta get significantly better on release from the end of beta.

We're still under NDA as far as any content/gameplay past level 13.

Really? didn't read about that, would have expected major forum use once that dropped, good to know...thanks,
We are only allowed to talk about stuff up until level 13. The nice and cool stuff is still held under lock and key.
Edit: I think most folks from Closed Beta do not post alot because they are afraid to accidentally break the NDA by giving out too much info. Or they just prefer to play the game instead of participating in flamewars here

I wouldn't say this game looks to have a good chance of making a smooth release if I didn't believe it myself.
im my task manager, it looks as if all 4 cores are being utilized. i see a load on each of them.perhaps the debugger is causing lag, memory leak issues and such.
i cannot fathom, logically, why they would use an old build. why subject us to poorer performance? im sure a stress is not needed with an old build. why?
ill try to lower my shader to 2.0.
this game is frustrating after time goes by. starts good, but gets worse.

Where do you people come from?

I agree tho,
its confusing to expect people to report bugs
if those same bugs have already been fixed in later clients
You also have to consider the thousands of different computer configurations possible, each one possibly having a conflict with a different bit of code. So the feedback from testers saying "I have such and such cpu, graphic card, sound card, etc. and I'm crashing" allows them to make the base code compatible with that piece of hardware. So there's testing right there.
And for those saying it's not called a test, this is the e-mail every open beta tester recieved, and appropriately highlighted is:
I mean if they cant proof read the welcoming letter to Open Beta testers, I can only imagine how many mistakes slip by in their code.
