This game is totally instanced. Even the CITIES are instanced.. EVEN THE CITIES
That's like so lame.. it's like "I am at the blacksmith" and another guy "Me too. Can't see you"
It's like Guild Wars (ok, not that extreme, but pretty close to it).. at least I am not willing to pay a monthly fee for a game that has instances all over the place. Everywhere.
What's the point of PVPing in instanced zones? If he is running away into the next zone and you are right after him and you both end up in totally different instances.. omg, that's so pointless.
Or if you go out with your guild into a zone and everyone ends up in a different instance.. so.. dumb.
Funcom's excuse for instances is that their graphics are so god-like that you can't handle it with computers nowadays.. my ass! Funcom considers ~200 players in one zone as "massive".. wow.. that's lame. I wonder how other MMORPGs manage to not use instances ALL the time. There are like a trillion games out that have no instances at all. I can accept instances in dungeons or special zones.. but EVERYWHERE? That's like so-not-MASSIVELY.
Oh well, anyways.. my Age of Conan order has been canceled.
Everyone who really wants to play a massively multiplayer online RPG should look for something elese, because Age of Conan is far away from being one. It's like a NextGen-Guild Wars with 1-2 addons
Did I mention that the CITIES are instanced too?

so how do you group? and if you are in a group and your group goes into a different zone do they all stay together? I never really had a chance to try out grouping during OB. also if you are loaded into one instance of a space and your buddy is in another how do you come together?
"For a wounded man shall say to his assailant, 'If I live, I will kill you. If I die, You are forgiven.' Such is the rule of honour..."
Groups stay together ^^
But, if you are not in a group, it can happen you both end up in two different instances. To get to the instance of another person, you type: /instanceselection and select the instance your friend is in.
Think about it, they even HAVE this function.. that should show you they are serious about instances
Did you leave Tortage Island?
Wonderful idea...lets separate all our players....should have just made the entire game one big solo adv like tortage, and then can play with others when the time of day changes! heh

I think cities are safe zones, even on the FFA server, so your logic about switching instances doesn't quite apply.
DDO did something similar with multiple instances. It was confusing at first but people got used to it.
I don't care.

thanks for the information everyone. now that I know how to connect with my friends its not a big deal at all. I'm either in the same room or using ventrilo when I play grouped so simply asking what instance someone is in is too easy. the 17th can not arrive soon enough.

There is NOTHING and i mean NOTHING wrong with this. If you think theres something wrong with it.. you FAIL! Insainly.

Getting a little hot here.
Its his opinion f u dont like it, dont comment on it.
you FAIL! Insainly.
Actually it is kinda lame how it's been done tbh, much the same as it was in Ao. Zoned areas I don't mind at all but setting the bar low as far as maximum numbers is concerned has a definate impact on large PvP battles. Ao was a pain with this, a few large guilds heading into a tower battle and half of the players couldn't get into the area as the zone was full. At least they have the command to change instance at will, Ao didn't have that so getting together with friends in some of the special areas was very hit and miss.

wow Chill with the Smileys... Some opinions are stupid specialy when their state their opinion without looking further into the Subject... Multi Servers for controling Population is Pure Win,
If Final Fantasy XI was as popular as WoW and didn't have multipul instances.. it would be insainly hard to get from one place to another. specialy Jouno.

Just reading about this makes me cringe. I was thinking of setting up a new PC when I got home from school to try this game, and even though I read tons of unfavorable things about the game, I was still going to give it a try. But... instancing zones including cities? I mean, that stops you from meeting tons of people you otherwise would have met, and it's just plain un-immersive.
Why go through all the effort trying to immerse players in a "world of Conan" with great graphics, wandering NPC's that talk and interact, interesting quests and storylines... and then take the carpet down from below everything with this instance crap? I havn't played the game yet, but come on. How could this be? If I am in a capital city, I want everyone else who is in that city to be there. It lets me gauge my server, and the people on it. If it's all instanced then it might as well be a single player game with multiplayer option we're talking about. And don't compare with Guild Wars; that's a non-monthly fee PvP based game. Age of Conan is supposed to be an immersive world which let's you live in Hyboria.
Ahhhhh, this is really bad. I was excited about this game; I never knew a suprise like this would rear its' head. Just plain dumb.
You get into the lesser populated Instances... that doesn't mean you still can't go there Manualy... just do the /chooseinstance thing or w.e it is.

Op I think the reason why there is stuff instanced is because of the graphics, it is hard for your average computer to hold that much data for one big massive world, remember that most people dont have high end pcs its usually the gamers.

Even tho it sucks theres only to ways to solve this kind of problem:
1: To instance the game like they did.
or
2: To create hundred of servers (Wow-like).
IMO, I prefer the second option, they definetely should have pick the second option.
Any of you guys know if its going to be like guildwars where you go outside a city and you enter in like a single player mission, wich sucks because I WANT TO GANK NOOBS, ksing mobs, make people get kill and stuff like that or its going to have a limit of players per instance and when that instance is full it port you to another instance until that one get full and so ?
IT SUCKS because many of us dont have anyone to play with, I mean, I was specting to meet a lot of people and them to play with them, but now its going to be a little hard to meet people since most of the time I am going to be soloing. T_T
Thx for reading.
I'm actually glad its instanced so I will have a lower chance of playing with people like you. It takes tons of skill to kill new players and kill stealing has to be one of my biggest pet peeves in MMOG's. I bet you like spawn and quest npc camping too, or better yet I bet you like to hide and watch other people fight and swoop in when their health is low after battle. very classy.

The game has only just been opened up. Prior to that everyone has been limited to the same area across 4 servers - hence lots of instances aka CoX.
Outside - were people are just starting to go - I am not even sure there are instances everywhere - it is supposed to be an open world with open world PvP etc.
And originally / nominally the level 1-20 experience inside Tortage was going to be a solo experience.
still gonna play it could care less about this issue and i dont really see the big deal. if you dont like it go play something else this topic is getting old

If you dont like it, dont go into a PVP server, because thats what people normally do in PVP servers, L2P NOOB
Well, what did you expect?
Funcom practically invented instancing, so this is what they do. And we have to thank them for giving that to the MMORPG genre.
If you manage to detect the subtle irony in the above paragraph you get 1 (one) internet.
Ok. For those who still aren't clear about this issue. The whole game is instanced, NOT only Tortage Island.. it's the WHOLE game, ALL cities and ALL areas. And yes, also all lvl 20+ areas.. EVERYTHING.
You can select your instance by typing: /instanceselection ... try it.. EVERYWHERE and you will get a list FULL of instances to choose from.
That simple :]
It's not an open world and it's by far not massively.. it's like the biggest scam ever.. thanks for reading.
You should ask yourself "Are you willing to pay 15$ a month for Guild Wars?" .. because that's what it basically means. Paying a monthly fee for an instanced game like Guild Wars.
I personally don't care for the reasons WHY everything is instanced. It is instanced. End of story. It sucks.
"Graphics" is a cheap excuse, set your graphics settings to medium or anything and problem solved.
"Lags" my ass. Then it means all non-instanced games like most MMORPGs ALL lag? yeah, right. Cheap excuse for cheap developers.
5 years of development and they came up with a fully instanced game, wow, what a shame. I am so disappointed. I really waited for this game and now it turns out to be like this.
My opinion, feel free to comment
I just wanted to let everyone know about how much this game is really instanced, so they don't buy it and waste their money.
Instancing in a massively multiplayer online roleplaying game is a MAJOR turnoff for me, personally. I feel like MMORPGS were specifically designed to be linked with everyone else in the world all at the same time. This is really kind of the beautfy of MMORPGS, at least to me. An alternate world that you can actually be someone and have an effect on that world you were just in. And that world you were just in may or may not have changed the next time you logged in, but you knew that once you logged back in it was the same exact world you just left however long ago it was.
I thoroughly enjoyed Star Wars Galaxies sandbox method. It may have lacked a lot of content in terms of questing, mission variety, etc. but you still could seamlessly travel through vastly large planets to cities as well as player cities. The fact that this was so, added to the immersion of the world and made you feel like when you logged in you were actually in an alternate world and you had an effect in the world wherever you went. It was like you were an integral part of it. It was an amazing thing (until NGE that is).
Instancing is kind of why Guild Wars always turned me off, granted it was free/month and a great game overall, which kind of made it more okay in my opinion. Great game...just instancing is once again, a turnoff to me.
I really do feel like instancing defeats some of the purpose of a true MMORPG. It's basically like Diablo II where you just join a server to play for a little bit not feeling like you altered the world at all or in any way. Nothing you did would ever change the world you logged back into. (I am not saying in DII you were supposed to fell that way though) It was just a very self-indulgent game as it should be since it is in essence, a single player game. But that set-up was completely okay to me because Diablo was one of the first of its kind and not specifically designed for an MMORPG concept; even though it accomplished its online counterpart quite successfully.
Instancing just breaks up the entire game as whole. You log in and every time you go anywhere or i guess 'zone', if you will, you have to pick which numbered world you want in, like Tabula Rasa. So it makes you feel distant from everyone else playing and almost like you live in your own little world and you don't matter too significantly as far as the game world is concerned.
The only aspect that instancing shines in, is in the technical department. Clearly hardware is an EXTREME issue with AOC and considering the depth of the graphics and software, I suppose there would be no other way around it without downgrading something of which more than likely would have been graphical appeal. So does that mean that AOC is ahead of its time in terms of hardware specifications? Maybe a little bit as far as the average pc gaming rig goes this year. That can be a good thing as well as a bad thing. Maybe in the future, once technology becomes more developed they'll lower the amount of instancing in the game, who knows? I must say though, graphics are NEVER everything in a game; at least they shouldn't be. There was a time when graphics would make a significant difference to me, but now, I think that is kind of a narrow minded way of thinking in a sense. I would take a lower grade graphically developed game that was thoroughly accomplished in everything else versus a game with insane graphics and rather underdeveloped other aspects any day of the week.
I'm not going to let the fact that there is instancing be the sole reason I don't get into AOC. There are many other more important factors than just this aspect solely such as....well, fun! If it's fun enough, you bet I'll be right there with the rest of you as I'm sure many many others will be. But if there was some sort of scale, -1 to AOC for instancing because sandbox is just simply better in terms of gameplay. Maybe it won't be in the final version lol.
lets see. decent graphics+crowded area+many players+a whole zones worth of items crammed into a small space= super lag within 500m of the city unless its instanced. i would much rather have an instanced city that doesn't lag everyone around it than an open one (plus it gives you some time to gather your thoughts as you enter/exit).
