The vast majority of the quests are kill 15 foozles etc and you would probably kill the foozles anyway so why not get the quest as well?
I guess because I want to feel like I made that choice voluntarily, and not because some invisible wall will not let me leave the path until I engage in some certain dialogue with an NPC or do some NPC quest.
Let me ask, why wouldn't an open and dangerous world be exciting to you? Why do some players have to be led by the nose, chapter to chapter, through some story arc?
Game worlds are fun. Freedom is fun. Danger is fun.
Being controlled is never fun.
Do you get tired of posting the same bullsh!t in every thread? You're a freakin level 7 for christs sake stfu. You don't like the game, we get it, now leave. Your sh!t is getting redundant.
Don't you have some quests to do? That is, quests you MUST do. Go on now, live your "stepford wife"-like existence in your movie of an MMO. Follow the script; don't be a bad actor.
I'm posting in a forum for a game I like. You're a tool that can't even get past level 7, but wants to shove his opinion down everyones throat.
Are you one of those, "If I don't like it, I am going to make everyone else not like it" type of people.

The anwser is yes.
If you truly liked this game, you'd be in it. But you aren't.
As far as posting, we are all free to post. You are the one who started with the personal insults. If you disagree and have a counter-argument, then fine. You don't have to be here either, you know.
I still find it odd that you say you like old-school DAoC, citing it had quests but no rush to do them. Yet DAoC before ToA had maybe 5 quests in the game at all? It was just as much a grind-fest as Lineage 2. 90% of the leveling was doing at Fins or in Corsucating Hib side.
The vast majority of the quests are kill 15 foozles etc and you would probably kill the foozles anyway so why not get the quest as well?

Cool, keep giving uninformed opinions after 7 levels and make yourself look like a tool trolling a forum for a game you don't like.
I said earlier, DAOC would be more my style, I suppose. A few quests, but not so many as to dominate game-play. Freedom to wander into any zone (i.e., no invisible walls), with only challenges to stop you.
MMO's are not an either "pre-scripted movie" or "free-for-all" format. There is a middle ground.
But the extremes are not very good designs, in either direction.
Scrap Tortaga and toss us into racial newbie towns with a minimal number of quests. That's the freedom lots of players want.
Hmm.. I think I see where youre going with this. You want to be able to go to a different newbie town if say, you made an alt and dont want to do the same thing over again? Did you know that once youre done with Tortage, you get dumped into a "racial newbie town"? And I believe you can choose to switch to daylight (mmo) at any time. I might be wrong about that though.
But I can see why that would be dull. I like racial newbie towns myself. Much better than "Youre all going to start here and like it lol." And with me liking to alt-alot. Thats a big game breaker if have to do the same quests in the same area over and over again.
Someone buy this guy a new keyboard quick! His capslock is broken! xD
Personally, I play mmos half for the community, half for the game. If a game sucks, I dont care how great the community is, I wont waste my money on it.
More rpg than mmorpg. The chat screen needs an update, combos... are kinda cool but I've seen better. long load screens. i hope the real world doesn't suck as much currentley I'd give the game a 6/10 only because the graphics are stellar but the gameplay sucks and is so unoriginal.
OK, I will pass out the troll food for this one.
Item #1 - More RPG than MMORPG? Are you out of Tortage yet? Nope, because you "can't wait for 20th" so you have not entered the big part of the MMORPG yet. NEXT.
Item #2 - Chat Screen Sucks. Agreed! My godz, how can these companies consistantly overlook this aspect of MMORPGs? City Of Heroes has done it exceptionally well, all the rest could use some work. OP's point is well justified.
Item #3 - Combos cool but OP has seen better... OK, I'll call your bluff. Which MMORPG has them better?
Item #4 - Long load screen. I have been timing mine with simple counting, not scientifically tracking them with an atomic clock or anything, but the longest I have had is about 15-seconds. Not even enough time to take a sip of my tea.
Item #4 - Someone that is dissapointed with within a few hours of playing with their new toy should seek out real life for a little while.
Item #5 - Six out of Ten? Meaning roughly half the games on the market are better? Name the games that push this down to hardly about average.
The game play sucks? Unoriginal? How much do I want to bet that after saying this sucks and is unoriginal the OP heads back to Scooby Do land in WoW?
Seeing as you trolled him for having a valid viewpoint I'll re-troll
item #1 Intended to be like an RPG, in my opinion however FC have made a huge error by having the starting zone like this because 1st impressions are golden. Tortage is linear and tedious, more so as Funcom have now gone back on what they originally said yet again about only needing to do it once. Sorry altoholics, you have to suffer the damn thing everytime. FC have said they may allow us to start at lvl 5, well woop-de-fooking-do as that takes all of ten minutes.
Item #2 no argument here, chat box does indeed suck.
item #3 Combat animations are very good, I have no complaints in that department. The combat system however is a failure. Let me explain: I like many others have a gaming keyboard and all my combos are now programed into my macro keys. This means that I only need to press 1 key to fire off the complete combo faster than anyone alive could do it with a mouse. This gives me a huge advantage in PvP against anyone without a gaming keyboard and takes all the so called skill out of it, which defeats the object but has to be done in order to remain competative with other players with gaming keyboards.
item #4 load screen time depends a lot on how good the users PC is, especially how much memory is on board so different people will get different load times. The problem here isn't the load time but the fact that there are so many of them. Completely zoned worlds went out with Adam but to their credit they do make for smoother gameplay.
Item #5 I gave Tortage 4/10. After Tortage I give it 7/10. Your reasoning assumes that the OP gives 10/10 to other games which may not be true.
Item #6 Tortage gameplay doesn't suck but it doesn't impress either. The gameplay after Tortage is better and the game does grow on you after that so why only 7/10? Well, for a start the world feels small and it is compared to other MMO's on the market. The game is riddled with bugs, a small number of which are serious while the majority are just annoying. The world is more open but this is largely a clever illusion as with most MMO's, in fact the game is still very linear in progression but levelling is fast so getting to the endgame will not take too long. The community is awful and I hope it improves with the new players arriving after release. The pickup groups I have been in so far have been full of clueless, whining morons that have no idea how to function as a team, only with guild groups has there been any cohesion and I can see this getting more and more the case as time goes on. Funcom have made the same error that all devs make every time with prices. Large bag 30 gold, mounts and riding lessons through the roof etc. which only seeds a fertile ground for gold farmers and Aoc is going to be full of them. Instanced zones, omg. Needed to meet up with a guildy tonight to help them with a quest and perhaps stupidly I forgot to ask which instance they were in. Travelled to meeting point and nobody there, not a problem. Found out which instance and swapped, only to be spawned in at the normal respawn point and have to run all the way to meeting point again. Yes people, change instance and it puts you at the bind point, not in the place you were.
Okay, all that makes me sound like a hater, not so. The game has indeed grown on me but not enough I'm afraid to justify a monthly subscription because it just doesn't bring enough to the table. Sure it's the best looking MMO on the market but graphics don't make a good game, gameplay does and AoC is really no different to other titles in that respect. So far I have taken a demonologist to 15, a barbarian to 10 and a guardian to 35 in three days so that tells you how quick the levelling is and at the moment I'm pretty bored with the game. look past the pretty veneer and AoC is just a simple old school MMO.
^^^^ Someone buy this guy a new keyboard quick! His capslock is broken! xD Personally, I play mmos half for the community, half for the game. If a game sucks, I dont care how great the community is, I wont waste my money on it.
NOTHING IS WRONG WITH MY CAPSLOCK. MY SHIFT KEY IS WORKING FINE Too.
Q. IF THIS GAME WAS A SOLO GAME WOULD YOU PLAY IT?
One of things Pencilrick is trying to get across is that he's not compelled to get to LVL20. I have to say i felt/still feel the same. After force led by the hand from point A to B to C to the bad voice acting with no freedom of choice to do anything and enduring load screen after load screen after load screen and having to do stuff the game forces you too. no, 'ooOOo what's over there? i'll check it out!' if you've played previous MMO's you feel like herded cattle and everything instanced to oblivion.
First impressions do count contrary to popular belief. It's those first levels and impressions that are the ones that will put the hook in you or not, and if you're there thinking 'it's ok, it's better after LVL20' constantly whilst being spoon fed content than you're not really off to a good start; in fact when i did hit twenty all i wanted to do was log off and go back to EvE i was so unenthused and pissed off with it all. That combined with delayed server ups, extra last minute charges for the EA, funcom admitting that a lot of stuff isn't finished and EA & release players will be nigh on beta testers (heaven forfend people should pay heard earned money for a finished product these days, and i say that to the gaming market in general not jsus AoC), an antiquated and atrocious PvP/Spawn point system that is so bad every comapny to ever implement it has given it up for dead and you rightfully have yourself a dud release in the eyes of many.
To the fanboi's: plz note my lack of swearing, insulting and used plain written english in the vein attempt to help you see why there are a lot of frowning faces in the crowd. This release simply is not as good as it should have been, hasn't delivered on promises made, and why people have felt lied to by FC in attempt to grab their money for over-hype that uses bad features taken from games 8 years old or more.
I keep seeing people say how lvl 1-20 is linear, boring, etc.
And the response is "wait until after that."
This is a design flaw because the idea of the first quarter of the levels is to hook you.
The fact that people are using the excuse of "wait until lvl 20" isn't very good for the game because if you don't like the early part of the game, some people might quit before they even get to 15.
It sounds like they should have scrapped Tortage Island, had a simple few quests as a tutorial and started you out at the beginning wherever you start at level 20.
I'm going to wait for a trial to the game before I think about buying it. But that means waiting for a new computer, so I'll be trying it out in 3 months, and by then it'll be a different game.
--------------------------------------------- I live to fight, and fight to live.
This game sounds fun when you read all the hype. But when you actually play the game it is pretty boring. It's like the boobs and blood is there to help make up for all that is missing.
Needs about 50% less quests and about 50% more "boobs and blood".
"Scrap the quest and give that barmaid a third breast."
Alright I've been playing on and off again since EA opened, roughly 10 hours, and I can't say I'm overley impressed. Actually I'm really bored with the game and kinda upset i already bought it... good thing i haven't entered the activation code yet...
Anyways heres the rundown. Very slow and drawn out battles, (as a gaurdian anyhow) that take forever! Potions and consumables are useless, I haven't had to use one once and when i did it barley did anything that impacted health rejen. Newbie island is so dull, no room for creativity or choice, your destiny is laid out for you and you have to complete tasks according to the game.... More rpg than mmorpg.
The chat screen needs an update, almost impossible to hold a real convo with the window getting filled with rubage like, "you can climb here!" .....great thanks for telling me what i know. combos... are kinda cool but I've seen better. long load screens. I CAN NOT WAIT UNTILL LV20, jeez. i hope the real world doesn't suck as much as newbie island does.
currentley I'd give the game a 6/10 only because the graphics are stellar but the gameplay sucks and is so unoriginal.
I concur. One would think having the Conan license would lay the foundation for a great game. But hey, if folks could screw up Star Wars (SWG), they can mess up Conan.
Too linear, too quest-driven. Like the OP said, more RPG than MMO.
If people continue to support this linear type of quest-driven gameplay, then who knows what next gen will look like (Hands-free play as you watch the game play out like a movie perhaps.)
You want to know the funny thing? I wished that this sort of gameplay extended to level 80. The nighttime switch included.
I'm not sure I understand why people enjoy monotonous quests with no specific meaning other than a pavlov's dog system of 'do this, get that'. But then on the reverse side you probably can't understand why I enjoy a rich and immersing story played out with other people, and the ability to shut out those people if I so choose.
I can understand a rich, living world in which the possiblities to explore seem endless and the only thing keeping you from walking in any random direction is danger.
I'm not saying quests have no place in a game, but to depend upon 10+ quests every level or two to lead you by the nose is implying that players have no initiative of their own.
Everything in a MMO ends up being some kind of grind, but at least there is freedom in the experience grind. The quest grind, however, is becoming very monotonous, as many of us have learned from WOW. We were just expecting something different in this new game.
Remember, YOU don't need a story to follow, YOU ARE the story. Your decisions, your courage, carve out YOUR destiny. Now backstory and all is fine, but we are adventurers in a world, not actors in a pre-scripted play.
You have to have freedom and danger in an MMO to understand what Immersion really is.
you havent gotten passed level 20 have you? I dont see ANYTHING linear about any of the content after 20.
No, up to level 7 and it's the most boring grind I've ever gamed.
I'll give you an example for comparison. Today I worked on a large and tedious spreadsheet for my job. I was less irritated by that task than I am playing up my character. Working is more fun than playing this game... so far.
I do hope you are right about the level 20 thing. I hope that I can endure Tortaga Island and it's endless laundry lists of quests. I do think if they cut this game's quests by about 75%, it'd be a better experience.
Up to level 7? That takes all of about 15 minutes. I think it took you longer to make that post than it did to play the game. ADD much?

Was a tedious half hour. But more so, was an omen of what the game might be like should I continue playing.
I've done the "laundry list of quests" routine for four years in WOW. I"m ready for something new, like exploring Hyperboria. I don't need to be led by the nose or herded like cattle. Just parachute me into a starting village in Cimmeria with like level monsters close by and I'll take care of the rest.
Don't mind an occasional quest, either. "Occasional".

this is the main flaw with these linear designed MMO's like Conan. Your in an Amusement Park going on the rides. Eventually those rides get boring.

I do hope you are right about the level 20 thing. I hope that I can endure Tortaga Island and it's endless laundry lists of quests. I do think if they cut this game's quests by about 75%, it'd be a better experience.
With that said you've just discredited yourself on being a reliable source of information on the game as a whole. The MMO you so desire is already out there. It's called Vanguard.

Actually, I quit Vanguard for the same reason: endless string of trivial quests.
Never had too much trouble running it, and AOC runs flawlessly on my comp.
It's an issue of freedom.
I want to be free to make choices, even bad ones. I want to be afraid of the world outside city walls, so there is excitement. I want to depend upon other players for mutual survival, so there is cameraderie.

Mne eto nado kak zuby v zadnitse.

Cool, keep giving uninformed opinions after 7 levels and make yourself look like a tool trolling a forum for a game you don't like.I said earlier, DAOC would be more my style, I suppose.
THIS THREAD FAILS. IF THE GUY ISNT HAPPY WITH THIS GAME THEN HE WOULDNT LIKE ANY MMORPG ON THE MARKET BECAUSE THEY ALL SUCK.
THE MAIN DRAW TO MMORPG'S IS THE COMMUNITY AND THAT DEVELOPS AS THE GAME PROGRESSES OVER TIME.
^^^^
Someone buy this guy a new keyboard quick! His capslock is broken! xD
Personally, I play mmos half for the community, half for the game. If a game sucks, I dont care how great the community is, I wont waste my money on it.
That caps lock button is pressed you know
HAY U GAIS THIZ GAEM IZ DA BOMBZ YO LOLOLOLOLZ.
Mne eto nado kak zuby v zadnitse.
Further analysis indicated that is apparently nothing wrong with the keyboard, however the controller is malfunctioning.
MY TAB KEY IS BORKEN LULZ
---------------------------------------------
I live to fight, and fight to live.

Everything in a MMO ends up being some kind of grind, but at least there is freedom in the experience grind. The quest grind, however, is becoming very monotonous, as many of us have learned from WOW. We were just expecting something different in this new game.

Working is more fun than playing this game... so far.

Up to level 7? That takes all of about 15 minutes. I think it took you longer to make that post than it did to play the game. ADD much?
I concur. One would think having the Conan license would lay the foundation for a great game. But hey, if folks could screw up Star Wars (SWG), they can mess up Conan.

We were just expecting something different in this new game.

you havent gotten passed level 20 have you? I dont see ANYTHING linear about any of the content after 20.
No, up to level 7 and it's the most boring grind I've ever gamed.
I'll give you an example for comparison. Today I worked on a large and tedious spreadsheet for my job. I was less irritated by that task than I am playing up my character. Working is more fun than playing this game... so far.
I do hope you are right about the level 20 thing. I hope that I can endure Tortaga Island and it's endless laundry lists of quests. I do think if they cut this game's quests by about 75%, it'd be a better experience.
With that said you've just discredited yourself on being a reliable source of information on the game as a whole. The MMO you so desire is already out there. It's called Vanguard.

Mne eto nado kak zuby v zadnitse.
You can't really get that with solo questing.
