1) Yes, the chat system is old. It CAN be customized, but nowhere near the degree that other recently-released MMOs will allow, and not as easily.
2) The Guild UI is not too informative -- and instead of having a list of Guild Members, it puts everyone in the guild on my Friends list. It's like they thought, "Why bother making a member list when this will do?"
3) The AI isn't *fantastic*, but it's really not that bad. Most mobs I've fought will at least try to adjust their shields to the damage they're taking. Unfortunately, making "next gen" AI would require even more power to run than the game already does.
4) Instancing the way it's done here: Necessary. Why? To cut on lag in a zone. Why is this important?
Because without "auto-attack", any time your machine spends hitching is a potential missed opportunity to hit an attack button. The more PCs you're going to see on a screen, the more likely low- and mid-end machines will start hitching. If they tried to smash everyone into one zone, you'd have a problem where only the highest-end machines would be successful at PvP because of lag issues.

Actually it's a server issue. If you have 100 guys standing around and 1 picks his nose, the server has to let the other 99 know about it. When they're all acting at once it gets ugly fast. So you're right that it is necessary to cut lag and improve responsiveness, but it's not really dependent on the speed of the local machine.
2. The itemization in the game is lacking. I'm lvl 28 and I'm not seeing much difference in equipment models then I had in the starting island. Definitely nothing cool like in OB when we bumped up to lvl 20 and got class armor. I remember they said there were some insane numbers or armor sets in the game but I'm not seeing them... There are plenty of boss mobs roaming but they never drop any loot.
3. Harvesting is the least inovative in a game yet. All the harvet nodes are static and once you know where they are you just run around to them with every other person harvesting. So you end up dealing with a lot of depleted nodes. and a ton of running... Wow, eq2, vanguard are all much better.
4. Mob AI is really wierd as is placement and pathing. I see mobs wandering in the exact same path in groups that clearly should be more spread out. Also agro rules make no sense. If there are 4 mob near each other I'll attack one with a bow and two might come while two more that are very close don't. If I attack one mob another one comes that is further away. If I body agro multiples come. So far I can't figure it out.
5. I still don't care for the combo part of the combat system. It means in most fights you only can do a couple special attacks before hte mobs are dead.
6. Stealth is near useless. at lvl 28 with my skill maxed and equipment that gives me like an extra 10 points, I will be seen by mobs several level below me all the time.
7. You can't fight in the water. This is probably an exploitable situation. If you get agro run into the water and the fight stops. Also if you are standing in the water you can't fight.
8. There is no death penalty at all. Well there is the 2pts off attack but at lvl 28 my attack is like 110 and climbing so 2 pts off is nothing... On the other hand death is a nice teleport system back to town saving you some running.
9. Instance selection if the zone has multiple instances gives you a free teleport to the nearest safe point. I haven't tried it but I'll bet you can even do it while in a fight.
10. NPCs & PCs popping into existance really near you. This is a huge issue in towns. NPCs can pop up like 3 ft in front of you especially groups. You can be running along then pop there is a crowd in front of you blocking your movement. Or the quest npc doesn't show till you are right on top of him... Very irritating.
I dont think thats a bad thing rearly about time a mmorpg actualy consentrated on pve aspect of game instead of endless grinds for crafting or trying to cater for pvp over I dont like pvp personal so cant coment on that but I would rather have a game thats strong in pve content instead of a a half good game that tryes to do bit of everything.Look a wow for exsample the pvp sucks due to inbalanced the pve is just endless grind and gets badly repetitive and has horrid story line to it thats if you can even rember the story line by time you get to end game.Just about every single mmorpg has pvp content and tryes to cater for every1 age of conan it seems is trying to cater for pve not everything.yes the game still has fair few bugs in it but nothing that has been mentiond in this post that i have read that cant be fixed and probebly will be fixed.
ganked in the three areas where my quests are at. And this is on a PVE server, and has occured from 8pm last night until 7am this morning , when I logged off,as now I just delete every quest I get as they are all in those area's.
being ganked in a pve server? damn that sounds really ... ghey.. for me then cause im not really too fond of pvp servers and i expect to do quests in safe zones in pve servers..
anyone can inform me a bit more about this?

I have to say it's rather sad to see that some people don't think the zoning is a problem. The fact that the open world is not only zoned but instanced has made my choice of not buying this game pretty damn easy.
I have to say it's rather sad to see that some people don't think the zoning is a problem. The fact that the open world is not only zoned but instanced has made my choice of not buying this game pretty damn easy.
I'm pretty surprised about the heavy instancing. Can someone give me a game that it's similar to so that I understand.
Is it like GW? Or is it like EQ2 where if a ton of people are in a zone, you choose between zone 1 and zone 2?
I've pretty much guessed that it was a PvE game with PvP tagged on, but I still hoped it wouldn't be. The game sounds fun, but sounds like it has some flaws that should have been foreseen when they were in the design phase of the game.

From a level designer's outlook, here is my thoughts. Just listen.
yes, the game is instanced. But you have to remember the graphic HOG* this game is with Dx10 lighting and shadow supports, etc.
This is not, take for example WoW, where although it is instanced as well, they just "hide" it in a different manor.
WoW is for lack of a better word, yesteryears graphics. Some might still enjoy them, some might just....be ok with them, and some might be sick of them and hate it.
Take games like GW, or even * Tabula Rasa. They are both heavily instanced games, due in-part to having high end graphics.
It is no easy task to pile massive lush worlds, water, towns, cities, shadows, lighting, effects into a game world.
Now transfer that into a somewhat "Live" MMO atmosphere and you can maybe begin to realize the extreme amount of hardware and req8 to place live characters, mounts, hell even siege warfare.
If you want to play a MMO with next generation Graphics. This is what you get.
It is not Funcoms or the games fault, it's the fault of todays technology.
You simply cannot create a world this "beautiful". Almong with maintaining a seemless* world.
On a final note*
To all you saying "It's not like WoW, wow is seemless".
No your 100% wrong wow is not seemless.
To put it bluntly.
Wow uses textures with MAYBE* ....maybe at most 10 colors per-texture. It uses drop shadowing and a textured lighting system.
AoC is pushing the limits of graphics here. The armor textures, shadows, water, lighting. It's all 100x more complex then WoWs system.
It's like trying to compare let's say ....Mortal Kombat for Xbox 360, and comparing it to MK on like a nintendo 64*......Theres nothing to compare graphic wise. You would be an idiot to even bring it up........
So bottom line, either you magically INVENT something that lets a game company live stream render millions of colors, textures, lighting, etc instantly without any pre-loading.....
Or
shut up and play.
Edit: not fixing my spelling because i rarely post, but wanted to offer a actual experienced level designers standpoint.

I cant imagine a 48vs48 keep siege it just seems like a lag fest even on good PCs. Running 6man groups can get laggy at times especially with totem and cyclone spam.
Apart from these problems I'm loving the game and I cannot wait to hit level 80 and start crafting my armor, exploring level 80 dungeons for phat lewt and pvping everyone i see :].
what i hate is the time spent on bugged/not finished quests. I'm lvl 45 and I found about 6-7 of them so it aint that much to complain about. But i really dont like to waste my time for nothing.
None useable spells, like when low/out on mana don't change colors like they do when out of range.

1. Long ass starter area. It takes days to do it and its more of an annoyance than anything.
2. Starter are is linear. Hardly any explorable areas off the beaten path. very small zones.
3. PvP is one of the worse implementations of PvP i have seen in awhile. No limitations to PvP. You can kill your own race if you want to. You can kill someone a couple dozen lvls lower than you without recourse of action. There is also no benefit to PvP. No honor point system, no tally, nothing.
4. Chat system is also one of the worse Ive seen since Lineage 2. Guild setup is bad. There is no ranking promotional system in the guild. If the leader were to leave, there would be no one to take his place.
5. UI is bad. Poorly implemented and created. A independenct UI modder created a better one in 48 hours where it took funcom 5 years to do.
6. No greater rewards offered for grouping instanced so everyone solos everything.
7. Currently, the mail system, bank system, and trader system is down because a guild two days before release found out how to dupe money.
8. Combat uniqueness gets old after awhile. Im staring more at the buttons Im smashing in than taking in the excitement of the battle.
9. PvP classes are unbalanced (or not even remotely balanced to any extint)
10. AoC is melee centric. Meaning, you if you pick a melee class you can zip through it all. If you pick a mage or healer class you'll have a helluva time as the spells are set up old school and the melee action has their combat arts plus the other combat keys.

Edit: One thing is similar to GW, and that is the mini PvP games.
If there is too many players in one zone, they make a second instance of that zone. New players zoning in will probably get to the least populated instance. There is no choice when zoning in like EQ2, but you can click a button and get the list of the instance and choose from after you have zoned in (to switch instance when you are inside the zone). When you do switch, you will respawn at the spawn point, and not at your current location.

I dont see how you can get ganked on a pve server ? Thats why it's called a PVE server .

lol yea but someone claimed he couldnt finish his quests in a PvE server cause he got ganked all the time so im checking if that was a lie or not

My opinions so far.. The mobs don't have much AI. I was hoping for runners who run at low health and aggro other mobs. Something like murlocs in WoW where they even heal each other. I want to see more mob AI in a newer game, not less. Quests are too easy with the waypoint system. When quests are that easy, they are boring.
Trying going ino the Great Pyramid. Run through the floor, pick up a great big group of mobs and then run around one of the columns 2 times. The mobs lose interest and wander back home.
And there are a lot of logical loop. Take for instance the Phoenix of the South. While you are out looking for the Black Lotus, if you wander downstairs and accidentally aggro the demon, you can kill it and open up the Atlantean treasure but you can't get it. Not much purpose to getting the Lotus. You end up having to swim out and re-enter which doesn't reset the altar (if you've applied the lotus to it after killing the demon) or the boss mobs. At least teh demon comes back so you can re-kill it and then move forward with the quest. A pretty BIG logical error for something that affects the 'destiny' of the character.

Whats bad....hmmm...where do i start.
The bad thing about this game is that you know WAR is going to come out and all your time in AoC will be for nothing .. ( enjoy it while it lasts )
Even tho WAR graphics arent going to be as good as AoC remember EQ2 vs WOW ... gameplay always wins in the end ... WAR is going to win.
