Telling people on a "GAMING" forum they are dorks because they are discussing about "GAMING" issues does not make you that smart. maybe you were dropped as a child in that case my sincere apologies.

AoC is a okay game, if you a easily impressed and sort of new to the MMO world. By new, I am meaning less than 5 years of MMOing or only play one or two other MMO's. I have play all major MMO's in the last 10 years. A open world free of levels with wonderfull graphics, with a simple, yet in depth combat system is what will get my attention. As of yet, there are no MMO's that have all that. Example. Make a UO style game with todays technology. UO had hit it on the nose 10 years ago. It's a shame they don't remake it. And I stopped playing UO in 2001.

You should really try EVE Online.

    It's UO in space :)

Most detailed crafting system and economy of any MMO.

    PVP with consequences.

Simple but challenging combat system with endless choices.

Skills will get you far - teamwork will get you further.

Newbies aren't useless in PVP - there's a task for everyone to do.

    No leveling, all skill based.

    Wonderful graphics.

Ofc. it has a few downsides as well but you didn't ask about those ;)

You might as well play Guild Wars or Mythos  if  AOC is all instanced zones.

The game is not wholly instanced!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! For crying out loud, once you get out of Tortage, Homeland Cities are not instanced, everyone that goes there is in the same zone after Tortage. Once you exit the City and explore the world it is so ENORMOUS that it doesn't need instancing. There was only 1 case at launch day where there was 2 sets of the zone due to heavy overpopulation, they used it to split the players so they could go smoothly through those areas.

This is NOT LIKE GUILD WARS, STOP COMPARING IT PLEASE. If you are curious about the game but want others opinions, there are so many differing opinions on what the game is and isn't so you may as well find a buddy key and try it for yourself. Or buy it and try your luck. I'm tired of seeing these "THIS IS LIKE GUILD WARS" and "ZOMG INSTANCING" posts. I see where the OP is coming from, but before you quit and decide "Ew I hate this" by asking other people who aren't very far along, themselves. Than just try it for your 30 days. If you like all the game systems, why would instancing bother you, anyways? You'd get used to it.

Oh, and get out of Tortage and play the open game before you do this. Thanks.

ugh... I read it all !!!  all 20 pages...

I've yet to buy AoC, but am seriously considering it for a summer break.

I've played (ac2,eq2,wow,lotro,gw,potbs and some betas) and this sounds like it's pretty close to EQ2 regarding instances. But a few points were made above that have raised a few more questions for me:

    1. Somebody said there are ALWAYS multiple instances of a zone to choose from, an epic and a regular kind of thing. What's that about? Is it true? You go somewhere and pick how hard of a zone you want? And yet, there are other posts saying that the instances are created dynamically as a function of the population, like EQ2 did... so which is it? (NOTE: I care less about levels 1-20, more about 20+).

    2. Same person said there are 3-5 instances of a zone almost always. When I played EQ2, I would see a couple of commonland instances at peak perhaps, hardly ever had 3 though. But population is not that high in that game, so it never really happened that much.

    3. instance switching. Suppose I'm talking to a friend in zoneA-instance1, and I'm in zoneA-instance2. We can talk to each other right? But we can't see each other. Suppose we then group, how do I get to instance1 ?  Do I just jump there, like I did in GW? Or do I have to run out of zoneA to zoneX, then back to zoneA so that I can then pick instance1?

    4. If I'm in a group of 10, and my 9 party members are in instance1, am I gauranteed to be able to enter instance1, even if the dynamic-instancing agent determines that the instance is FULL and that no one else can enter? And if you say yes to that, what if i'm not in a group? Do I have to join a group in instance1 first, before I can then enter instance1?

    5. pvp. Somebody jumps me and I loose. Do i rez outside of the zoneA-instance1 that I was in? Can I chase that person successfully? Or can he just pop to another instance? I can query something to find out what instance that person is in? If not, then couldn't I as a nomadic griefer to jump around killing lonely souls, only to pop to other instances once he gets enough help to run me off?

These are some questions I got.

And also, I'm glad the admins are letting this discussion happen; lots of tangents in the thread, but there is a good line of discussion buried in it of you look hard enough.

I would like to hear the answer to the above poster's questions as well.  I thought I had finally gotten the jist of the whole thing, and that it was not in fact an instanced world (like Guild Wards), but that instancing only happened dynically, when over-population occurs.  However, I think it was Raven that said that  after level 20 the cities are not instanced, but major hubs whereas the zones outside were all instanced (just like Guild Wars).   I really would like someone neutral to answer this one way or another, as I am not forking out hundreds of pounds to update my pc on a fricking, instanced world!  I like to do events in game, that would not work in an instanced game.

So if someone could answer the above posters questions, then I would be grateful.

AOC is NOT instanced like guild wars.  It appears to be a little like Tabula Rasa, with new instances coming up as existing instances get full.  While the game does have some private instances, like most games, the open areas are populated with other players and groups, not just the towns.  It isn't like Guild Wars where you are in an instance with only your group.

Lest i sound like a fanboy... I am pretty disappointed in the game as a whole... it has so many more valid reasons to trash it than the instancing of zones... Like the size of the zones, or the lack of compelling content or itemization in the tiny zones. ;)

  • infinituminfinitum Member Posts: 95

I have a lvl38 Hox, and my take on the subject is that there instancing throughout the game...

BUT... its nothing like Tortage! Once you leave the starting area the zones are very large and throughout my time in early access i have been checking the instance state of all the major zones i have visited, only to find that at peak times on Friday night and Saturday there was one extra instance of any particular zone running at any time.

I do not even notice the instancing and the two times i have ever changed to another instance was where i felt the one i was in was overpopulated and i could not get to the mobs I wanted.

To re-iterate the game is broken into zones, when a zone becomes over-populated the server creates another instance of that zone. It is nothing like guild wars.

I hope this helps those still undecided.

There are multiple instances of the zones to choose from. you can just click on the little upside down triangle by the mini-map to see them and you can move between them. There is also one EPIC zone for many of the locations. this is HARD and should only be attempted by a group that is higher level than the average for the zone.

    2. Same person said there are 3-5 instances of a zone almost always. When I played EQ2, I would see a couple of commonland instances at peak perhaps, hardly ever had 3 though. But population is not that high in that game, so it never really happened that much.

This is true but I have only switched zones to party up with people in my guild or friends list.

    3. instance switching. Suppose I'm talking to a friend in zoneA-instance1, and I'm in zoneA-instance2. We can talk to each other right? But we can't see each other. If you are in a group the group will follow into the appropriate zone. The only time this did not happen for me is when my group picked Epic and I did not. I rentered the zone and all was fine.

    5. pvp. Somebody jumps me and I loose. Do i rez outside of the zoneA-instance1 that I was in? Can I chase that person successfully? Or can he just pop to another instance? I am playing on a PVE server so I am not sure. The reason I chose PVE is because of griefers and gankers. They ABOUND in this game. It is FFA in the PVP areas with only a very, very short protection timer when you respawn. you will get ganked at respawn points and when engaging an NPC by a bunch of children who think that is a challenge. Funcom has some things they are working to help with though.

These are some questions I got.

I so want for this forum to become more serious but it's just not happening.

AoC is open world.  It also has instances and dungeons.  You get a loading screen before you enter each "country" or "instance/dungeon".

It really is a great game assuming that you have a half decent computer so you can actually appreciate the quality of high rez graphics in it.

If anyone has serious questions about the game you can PM me or visit my mmo blog mmorpgslave.com

has it really been confirmed by Funcom that each zone can only hold up to 48 people before it makes a mirror image of itself?

If that is the case I wonder how one can call AoC a MMO...sounds more like a multiplayer RPG to me...

Nope, there is no limit in instances. You have just fallen for the Anti-AOC propaganda.

EQ2 also started with this small zones u have to load everytime.

but look at the latests addons, the new zones are gigantic, and no loading at all.

maybe aoc will have this too some day?

uh... I thought my questions were serious.   Why don't you answer them seriously for everyone else's benefit as well.  (I don't see why going to another site or conversing with PM is necessary)

Instanced Zones destroys the political dynamic on FFA PvP servers. Eve has the correct implementation; open map where players can be attacked at any point without escaping to another instance of the same zone. Funcom's implementation is somewhat awkward and somewhat pointless from a PvP perspective.

This makes zero sense ... if there's no limit then why have instances lol?

Cripes people get off the 'This is Guild Wars' bandwagon. AoC has 'instanced zones' and pathing, but no where near that of GW.

What do u mean no loading at all? i played eq2 after RoK was released and the fact i had to w8 for loading screens when i went from the north part of the city to the east was game breaking for me. To go from one zone to the other i had to endure a loading screen. Eq2 still has plenty of loading.

I hope AoC isnt like that because i have been looking for a new mmo to keep me busy till august, but if it is AoC is probably not for me.

Original Anarchy Online had sharded zones. This is nothing new, it's needed to an extent. Overcrowded areas with little to no alternative are not fun, yet being in an empty shard isnt fun either. A median is required to make the most people happy. Public instances and zones are fine, as it keeps the game manageable on today's computers. We dont have the technology to have a completely seemless world and allow for large amounts of players (300+) to congregate and play together (standing around town socializing doesnt count, I mean heavy network traffic such as PVP)

I'm pretty sure EQ1 and EQ2 both have collision detection. I know for a fact at least EQ1 did because when PvPing you couldn't run through someone and I remember people griefing the bank in PoK by blocking the entrance and you couldn't just run through them.

    Also,  I have a question.

As far as instancing...what is the player cap per instance? I heard it was 100, but now I'm being told it's only 48 characters allowed per instance by several people. Is this true?

100 was bad enough considering EQ2 allowed 350 toons per zone. But if it's only 48 that totally ruins it for PvP.
