Personally I hate the idea. It means lower quality, messy controls and less customization options. However, it seems that developers are forcing the issue with games like "Free Realms", "Age of Conan" and "The Agent".
What are your thoughts?

Is this a serious question??? MMO's for consoles?? Lol...what a waste. The controls would be sloppy as hell, i don't even see how the interface could be user friendly with the clumsyness of an xbox/ps3 controller. It would be destined for failure from the start.
Unfortunately yes, it's a serious question.
I think an mmo worked from the ground up to be designed for a console could work just fine. I don't think porting that same mmo to a PC, or a PC mmo to a console will be too great though.
AoC seems to be the only big name MMO that is looking into console release. I understand that this could boost subs, but my problem is the population of those who play console games. For example, I play a lot of console games and I'm telling you that the online play is VERY young, like under 12 young. The rest seem to be highschool kids with nothing but profanity and racial slurs. I seriously hope MMOs don't start going after the console market. And on that note I hope that MMOs stay away from having to have teamspeak or vent components in order to play the game efficiently like in WoW (just about a must in the large raids).
The gaming industry is about $218 million dollars. Of that, around $17.7million accounts for PC multiplayer online games. The rest of the money goes to console games. A large percentage of gaming companies, like Lucas Arts, are focusing on developing console games more than PC games.
Reasons why are, consoles are cheaper and easier to update than gaming computers. Consoles, like PS 3 now come with DvD Blue Ray discs which add a new new high graphic content to console games. Consoles attach to you hi def TV and with surround sound make for an awesome gaming environment.
I was a hard core PC online gamer, but having just bought a PS 3, I am convinced this is the future of online gaming. Don't get me wrong, PC games will continue to be around, but more people will continue to buy the $500 gaming console rather than the $4000.00 PC computer.
uh WoW alone brings in a billion dollars profit a year. GTA IV and halo 3 each grossed over $300 mill. Even crysis made over 17 million dollars.
The gaming industry is worth many billions, not 218 mil, and PC gaming alone is worth billions
It doesn't matter to me one way or the other. I agree that if the game is designed for one or both, then it would work out fine (if implemented well).
The only problem I see is that the engine has to be built for a specific piece of hardware (take FFXI for example). The game is alive and kicking after so many years (6 now I believe), but the graphics have hit their limit due to the limitations of the PS2. At the rate consoles are being released, developers would stay busy building the game on a different engine for each new console they wanted to market to. Perhaps it wouldn't be as much trouble as that, but FFXI seems to suffer from it. (by the way, I enjoy the style of the graphics in FFXI and I always have, but it would be awesome to see them upgraded at some point.)

This is the mentality that is causing this. Consoles are NOT cheaper. I just built a high end PC for 750 (not top of the line but high end) and if he CHOOSES to upgrade for whatever reason, it'll only be 100 here or 100 there. He won't have to upgrade for years whereas the console will have to be thrown out and a new one bought in a few years.
If anything the cost the same once you have upgraded to the fullest extent and the tech out does the current upgradable parts. Console games cost more to purchase (60+ dollars as opposed to 30-50) and you have less control over what is done to them.

In my opinion no
It won't work, I would never play it then
The only mmorpg platform is the pc

waiting for ... nothing..
You ever play a MMO that was developed for a console? Try out FF if you havn't. First trying playing it on a PC with keyboard and mouse then try with a controller. You'll be amazed at how well a mmo will work on a controller.
MMOs on consoles make them that much more accessible.
Saying they won't work makes you sound uninformed.
Being a guy that doesn't own a console, and will never buy one until they are replacements for computers my answer is no.
I'm not one of those idiots who think I'm smarter than the console user. I just don't like games that are on consoles, and would just give up on MMOs instead of spending 400-600 dollars on a new console that would only be used for one game.

Sorry but your incorrect. I don't need to play one to know that console games are STATIC. I don't mean that they can't be updated some but you cannot update a graphics engine or change gameplay on a console.
I dont care if AoC goes console.
I dont know the two other games, but they are probably the same kind, so what.
AoC is a egoshooter-ish game, for all I know. That they have only 3 races already tells you a lot about it, right ?
And that they let you play Conan's race is IMHO a huge faux-pas. There was never another Cimmerian in the original stories of Howard (and the followup stories by other authors).
Its not a game for roleplayers, or for people who love complex gameplay, so it fits on console, right ?
Ahh Yes, Another person thinking I would voice my opinion without trying one. In fact I have played FF, it was fare to simplistic and clumsy for my tastes. The PC gives MMO's the ability to become far more complex and user friendly. Theres just no way that a xbox/ps3 can compete with the mouse/keyboard combination. I can say that I will never play any MMO released for any console, as I refuse to throw my money in the toilet by buying an console platfom, that I will have to throw away 2 years later when I want to upgrade to the "new" console. It just doesn't makes sense to spend 600$ when you can buy a decent gaming PC for that price.
Sorry but your incorrect. I don't need to play one to know that console games are STATIC. I don't mean that they can't be updated some but you cannot update a graphics engine or change gameplay on a console.
Yeah Uninformed. Final Fantasy Online has 4 expansions. The Xbox 360 version has an upgraded engine.
So this discussion is about the controller (keyboard/mouse vs x-box or ps3 controller) rather than the actual console?

Lol, Looks like thats the direction its going in
Actually I'm not sure what its about. The original poster changes his arguement. I was specifically comment about the sloppy controls comment these guys make. I'm just saying properly done a MMO properly developed to use a controller will be just as effective as keyboard and mouse.
I think its funny that one of them throws thier old console away when they get a new one. The PS2 and first xbox still have games being released for them. I'd like to see anybody come up with a gaming rig for 600 dollars. Thats hilarious.
Two different consoles. Its not updated, it is a different version all together. Nice try though. Expansions are another beast all together. They aren't updated so much as include all the content on one disc.
I didn't change my arguement. You brought up a completely useless ideology and w/o any constructive thought tried to flame me. You sir are showing that either you buy whatever your told or you don't do any research before opening your mouth. "Lower Quality, Messy Controls and Lack of Customization" pretty much sums it up.
Yes you can build a gaming computer for 600. It may not be top of the line but it'll play anything out atm.
Also please read all of a post before replying.
I'll give you guys another view from a die hard pc gamer (me). I'm prolly older then a lot of you (sucks for me), but I've been playing mmo's since uo. I can't even tell you the amount of money I have spent upgrading my computer to handle whatever the new game on the block was. I buy a new graphic card about once a year at an average of $400. I upgrade my processor and mobo about once every 2 years and ram as such. Now while some of you may not mind shelling out money to keep up to date, I'm getting a little tired of it. I have to say that I would not mind switching to console if they bring out a good mmo and master the control scheme. $500 every 4-5 years is a lot better then the $1,000+ per year I'm spending now to play these games... not to mention the monthly.
When a game is made for a console, they're only working with one set of hardware. They don't have to worry about making the game scale for low end/high end machines. Right now, games for pc's are forced to work with countless graphic cards, processors, etc. I think that mmo's for next gen consoles will be much smoother.
I'm at the age where I just want to put a disk in the gd machine and play the game. I want it to work without upgrading, downing drivers and tweaking shit through all hours of the night. Flame me if you'd like, but I am for mmo's on consoles and will more then likely make the switch. And like it or not, it's heading in that direction.
Ive got a gaming rig im buying for $680 with AMD's quad core processor, 2gs of ram and a GeForce 9600 GT range video card. (cant find the exact one on this computer booked marked on another)
Muahahaha Porting to console is SOE last hope of remaining commercially viable. Now that SOE new parent company is SCEA (manufacter of the Playstation console for USA distribution) their are positioned to go 50% and my guess, alot more.
The Playstation 3 console was number 3 but SOE got lucky that since Blu-ray HD DVD is now the consumer standard and the PS3 is a Blu-ray HD player as well as a gaming console. SOE lucky!
