I'll give you guys another view from a die hard pc gamer (me). I'm prolly older then a lot of you (sucks for me), but I've been playing mmo's since uo. I can't even tell you the amount of money I have spent upgrading my computer to handle whatever the new game on the block was. I buy a new graphic card about once a year at an average of $400. I upgrade my processor and mobo about once every 2 years and ram as such. Now while some of you may not mind shelling out money to keep up to date, I'm getting a little tired of it. I have to say that I would not mind switching to console if they bring out a good mmo and master the control scheme. $500 every 4-5 years is a lot better then the $1,000+ per year I'm spending now to play these games... not to mention the monthly. When a game is made for a console, they're only working with one set of hardware. They don't have to worry about making the game scale for low end/high end machines. Right now, games for pc's are forced to work with countless graphic cards, processors, etc. I think that mmo's for next gen consoles will be much smoother. I'm at the age where I just want to put a disk in the gd machine and play the game. I want it to work without upgrading, downing drivers and tweaking shit through all hours of the night. Flame me if you'd like, but I am for mmo's on consoles and will more then likely make the switch. And like it or not, it's heading in that direction.
lmfao with a 400 dolar video card thats close to top of the line, you would not need to buy a new video card for 4 to 5 years.
You really are spending way too much money on upgrading and/or buying your hardware at wrong stores, becuase i have a rig for 680 that will last a good 2 to 3 years.
I love it that this is even still a topic for debate. FFXI does both, consoles and PC. I've played it, and frankly, I couldn't tell who was using what. Meaning that, wtf do I care what the person I am talking at in-game is using a PC or not. Example, the controls for DDO are your typical MMORPG PC fair, WASD, hotbars, etc. However, it is completely setup to let you use an XBOX-style controller.
I'll tell ya what I am getting tired of, Small mmo communities. We have so many MMORPGs out now. Its not like the old days of UO and EQ, where you only had a few choices, so the games were always jumping. But with so many different choices, populatins tend to get thinned out, save for the "it" games, like WoW. Allowing more avenues of play allow for morepeople to kill...er..I mean, meet.
I do, however, share your concerns about game quality. Well, I should call it game style. Console games tend to be softer,. For me, I'm looking forward to Darkfall, assuming it actually launches and doesn't suck. A hardcore sandbox in teh spirit of the Original UO. But, i fear as consoles will make games like this a thing of the past.
That said, I voted "Don't care" because your topic is "games PORTED to the consoles", meaning it was made for the PC first. I have two thoughts on this topic. I have been a die hard PC gamer for more years than I can count(scary huh). I have, in years passed been an avid gamer on ps & ps2. every time I spend $40+ on a console game, I end up disappointed and come back to old faithful PC. I really don't believe IMO, that console gaming would be as effective,in the truest sense of MMORPG.
1) et me explain. I have been playing MMO & MMORPG games for a long time(ever since guild wars Beta). I have BETA tested ot at least trial version tested most Top end MMORPG games out there. I have found on many there seems to be a sense of community. a place to hang and chat, meet people and get a general sense of commoradary(spelling sux). I don't see how one would be able to comfortably type in a comsole game, without moving, re-arranging every ime you wanna type & switch back to playing. My best example is Battlefield 2 for the PS2. Oh my god,IMO it sucked compared to the PC version. Why don't I talk about the X-barf? simple fact is for online I have absolutely no interest. Paying monthly to play online? pfffft... enuf said
2) this point is STRICTLY my opinion. Even though I find alot of "kidides" in PC mmorpg games. Even though, generally speaking, kiddies tend to ruin the general sense of matureness of a game(although some adults have no brain cells as well), console gaming would bring many more problems like that(IMO). It is true, that PC gaming does have that problem already(I will give you that). Like I said,it could potentially inflate the problem exponentially. That my friends would surely suck.
As for the poster who is tired of spending $100s of dollae every year to upgrade his PC...PFFT. I have an intell P4 (3.06G), 120G HD & and an AIT Radeon 9600 250meg Grafix card. I build it 5 yrs ago, and just now am finding a slight need to upgrade my grafix card. It has worked quite nicely along the way. I have always thought that PC games of all kinds were better than console gaems of the same name. Guess I am just biased thatay toward the PC,just like those Biased toward console games.
...that's all I got to say about that...I am outta here...
AoC seems to be the only big name MMO that is looking into console release. I understand that this could boost subs, but my problem is the population of those who play console games. For example, I play a lot of console games and I'm telling you that the online play is VERY young, like under 12 young. The rest seem to be highschool kids with nothing but profanity and racial slurs. I seriously hope MMOs don't start going after the console market. And on that note I hope that MMOs stay away from having to have teamspeak or vent components in order to play the game efficiently like in WoW (just about a must in the large raids).
Don't you think thats the age of the players just reflects the games? If the games are more mature then you will get more mature players too (hopefully at least).
When it comes to controls... There is USB ports on both 360 and PS3 so you can always get a mouse. I Think it's an ok idea, MMOs need to evolve a bit and mixing console games and regular MMO might just do that... Or not, still worth trying.
If you actually believe that then I'm sorry, but you're a huge idiot. The console industry has been growing at alarming numbers over the past 15 years, and this clown thinks it's the last generation? haha, that's hilarious.
Ofcourse we have seen it all before, "Community based gaming (fancy word for virtual world or mmorpg) is going to dominate everything, becuause look at WoW!". What the writer of that article fails to realize is that for every WoW there are a crapload of virtual worlds failing.
You ever play a MMO that was developed for a console? Try out FF if you havn't. First trying playing it on a PC with keyboard and mouse then try with a controller. You'll be amazed at how well a mmo will work on a controller.
MMOs on consoles make them that much more accessible.
Saying they won't work makes you sound uninformed.
Sorry but your incorrect. I don't need to play one to know that console games are STATIC. I don't mean that they can't be updated some but you cannot update a graphics engine or change gameplay on a console.
Yeah Uninformed. Final Fantasy Online has 4 expansions. The Xbox 360 version has an upgraded engine.
Two different consoles. Its not updated, it is a different version all together. Nice try though. Expansions are another beast all together. They aren't updated so much as include all the content on one disc.
I didn't change my arguement. You brought up a completely useless ideology and w/o any constructive thought tried to flame me. You sir are showing that either you buy whatever your told or you don't do any research before opening your mouth. "Lower Quality, Messy Controls and Lack of Customization" pretty much sums it up.
Yes you can build a gaming computer for 600. It may not be top of the line but it'll play anything out atm.
Also please read all of a post before replying.
No, I only pointed out that console controllers are viable for MMOs. Saying they are sloppy doesn't mean they won't work.
Just because consoles update differant than the PC doesn't mean its not a update. However, You are totally wrong at this point because current console games can in fact be patched post release. Heck original Xbox games can be patched.
Its not a flame if its true. You are misinformed if you think console games can't be updated after release.
There is tons of content available for all sorts of 360 games that you can download after the fact.
You are basically saying it can't be done just because it hasn't been done yet. Which it has.
The PS2, Xbox 360, and PC versions of Final Fantasy Online all play on the same servers.
BTW, You can spend 600 bucks on your mediocre gaming rig but PS3s are 400 dollars now.
My XBox 360 uses the same graphics API as your PC. What resolution are you playing your games at?
Comparing XBox resolution to PC resolution I'm playing at 1920x1080.
Whats so funny about all of this is that I'm not worried if Age of Conan will work on my 360. I'm not like, Oh I need to upgrade. I just know that it will work.

Reading comprehension FTW. "This doesn't mean they can't be patched some." You even quoted that. The fact that your example of the PS2 and the X-Box did not show that a massive update happened. It was two totally different versions of the game.

It was a flame because you decided that I was misinformed and instead of saying how, you just pointed out that I was. You need to take some classes my friend or maybe graduate from elementary school. I'll say that I am wrong when Sony or Microsoft decide to completely revamp a game and release it to those systems. Until this gig plus of data comes available to download, I'll stick with it can't be done.
BTW, You can spend 600 bucks on your mediocre gaming rig but PS3s are 400 dollars now.
I can build a system that far surpasses the abilities of your 360 for that so I'll stick with 'my mediocre system'. The PS3 costing 400 is also common knowledge I just didn't feel the need to point that out to you. However, kudos on at least using a search engine.

At the moment yes, the XBox and my computer use the same API because I refuse to upgrade to Vista just for DX10. However, PC tech has far surpassed your Xboxs capabilities. I play my games at 1440x900. I don't need to turn it up past what my monitor's max res. is. However if I connected it to my television, I could easily go to any resolution that my video card supported.

Okay show me a fully configured PC that will run Call of Duty 4 at 1920x1080 w 4 x AA without choking
to death. Oh yeah and your budget is 280 dollars because thats how much a 360 costs.
All you have going for you is your opinion. You have to proof of fact that console based MMOs will have 'Sloppy Controls' . However, Final Fantasy Online has been proving since 2003 that MMOs will work on a console. Whether or not you like the interface is your problem.
I'd like to see anybody come up with a gaming rig for 600 dollars. Thats hilarious.
I never said you could make a gaming rig for 600 bucks. Please reread where you think I said that consoles are too expensive. I said if all you can do on a console is play games, then to me its not worth 300-600 bucks. Until, they can make consoles replace computers I will never own one. Even if MMOs disappear from PCs.
When I can bank, pay bills, send emails, purchase items, do research, and print pages from a console, then I'm down.
I have been a PC gamer for roughly 4 years. I have also been playing consoles for my whole life. I love both, but I hate being raped by Nvidia and all other PC hardware companies every time the next big thing is released. When I can not play because my hardware is out of date It makes me pray that the next gen consoles bring in MMO titles and end the PC stranglehold .... Just for the simple fact that I want to spend less money on hardware.
Whats more reasonable? Spending 60$ on a game where you put it in and it works instantly without buying upgrades, or droping 300$ on the latest video card to enable the PC to run it at full speed?
Sadly, the consoles probably thought around that and will ally with Nvidia creating upgrades to purchase for the next gen consoles or something like that.. Who knows? I do know that i am done upgrading my PC for video games.
Okay show me a fully configured PC that will run Call of Duty 4 at 1920x1080 w 4 x AA without choking to death. Oh yeah and your budget is 280 dollars because thats how much a 360 costs.
Wow. You are constantly changing the rules...we go from PS2's to the 360 now. FYI 360 when it came out was 400 (just like the PS2 was 600) as well. But for 280 dollars I could UPGRADE a computer to run it that way. CoD4 isn't that hard to make a system play on those settings, but not put one together (maybe i could if I used ebay).
All you have going for you is your opinion. You have to proof of fact that console based MMOs will have 'Sloppy Controls' . However, Final Fantasy Online has been proving since 2003 that MMOs will work on a console. Whether or not you like the interface is your problem.
And all you have is your opinion. Someone else in this thread said that FF actually made him never want to play with console users again. So I guess that the point is moot?
edit: BTW, after actually reading the specs on the 360 (The 280 dollar version)...I don't even think I could find parts that old. A 'triple' core Xenon processor, 512 DDR2 RAM (they use GDDR3 but that is not available to use as actual memory), 256MB Memory Card (out of the box unless you buy the more expensive version), Video Card of only 10MB DRam and a 12x DVD 'Player'. A a single 8800 GTS is more powerful than the 360.
Originally posted by Jixx Based on what information? The 8800GTS also cost 600+ dollars when it was released initially. So if you want to go by initial release cost fine.
That was the GTX version. I got my GTS for 400 (about 1 month after the release) which was the initial release price of the 'premium' 360.
Actually I'm not sure what its about. The original poster changes his arguement. I was specifically comment about the sloppy controls comment these guys make. I'm just saying properly done a MMO properly developed to use a controller will be just as effective as keyboard and mouse. I think its funny that one of them throws thier old console away when they get a new one. The PS2 and first xbox still have games being released for them. I'd like to see anybody come up with a gaming rig for 600 dollars. Thats hilarious.
I just built my wife a computer from parts ordered online for less than $800. If you paid $600 for the console itself, you more than likely also paid for some periphrials(sp?). Bringing your total close to $800, give or take. She plays many up to date games.

I'm sorry good sir, but you are sadly mistaken. I've quite obviously been playing pc games a bit longer then you. A $400 graphics card should last 4-5 years? You're out of your mind. That's what I though when I bought the Gefore 2, Geforce 3, and the 4, and lets not forget my 5 series, my 6800 GT, my 7800GT and my 8800 GTX. You are dead wrong about this, and anyone who's been playing mmo's BEFORE World of Warcraft will back me up on this. If you want to play with descent settings, framerates, and have an enjoyable expierience, it's gonna cost ya.
For example... let me know how your 9600 is running 5 years down the road. You won't be able to run anything but WoW. The problem is, (I COULD BE WRONG HERE, BUT I'M TAKING A STAB), you more then likely started your MMO career with WoW, and there's nothing wrong with that. It's a fantasic game with brilliant coding. So good in fact, it can be run on any machine. However, with your 9600, you will be upgrading next year when the newer MMO's hit the shelves with your 64 Stream Processors. Trust me. That card won't last ya long.
Oh, and I buy all of my gear from Newegg. I have for the past 5 years or so. So if that's the wrong place to buy gear, that I apologize. I do price check on other sites using pricewatch, however, newegg is usually a great price with above average shipping cost and time.
For one i will be happy once more MMORPG's comes out for consoles as my computer only has a 2.6 ghz CPU, 1 gig of ram and a 256MB 5200 FX graphics card. If i wanted my computer to run say Age of Conan at max settings with 60FPS i would need to put 1,000 dollars or more into my computer which would then only last a few years when i can just go to gamestop and put down only 280 for a 360.
That's what I'm talking about. I for one love PC gaming. I have not owned a console since Sega Genesis. However; I have been learning that as I age, there are more and more things that take my money. Namely, my wife, but more recently my son. It's getting to the point where I would rather pay the $300-$400 for the console and be done with it for 5-8 years.
I'm not slamming PC gaming, as it is where I live, I'm just saying, mmo's on consoles could open up some really great oppurtunites... well, for some of us at least.
The console is far to unweildly for any standard MMO out today. The games would need to be dumbed down and modified from their origional vision to satisfy the console market. I for one don't want my chosen MMO changed to cater to a less capable machine. I don't want development time being put into something like this that could be put into quality content or bug fixes.
Now if an MMO was made for the console market that would be fine but these MMOs made from the ground up for the console are much different beasts than a PC MMO. I am not saying they are better or worse but the design choices will always be different until a console is released that is simply a PC in a ready made box.
From a business standpoint, yes. Why put all of your eggs into one basket? FFXI is a good example of cross platform play. If more companies made it to where you can play the same game together regardless of console that would be a home run. I'd buy all versions available to me so I can play from wherever I want to.
If you take a game and design it from the ground up with consoles in mind I think it would work. Mind you, I don't see myself purchasing and playing Champions, super heroes just aren't for me.
All of the compatibility issues, the rush to upgrade computers, etc. would be nonexistant. The only compatibility you would have to test for is peripherals. Consoles are a set and closed environment, so you know, on day 1 when you put the game into the system it will work. With the current crop of consoles (wii excluded) patching wouldn't be an issue.
I would love to see something like Planetside come to the PS3.
Everquest Online Adventures/Frontiers on the PS2 (which works on the PS3), was a fun game, poorly promoted. It is a blast to play an mmo from the comfort of my sofa.
You would obviously lose scalability, but I would expect people not having to do things like turn down shadows, etc to increase performance because it would already be in and working. I'd rather have a solid running game with tight mechanics that worked versus having all the bells and whistles that I might enjoy after a few dozen patches and an upgrade or two later.
People complain about bad controls, lower quality, etc...aren't we seeing that now as this genre in particular is PC exlusive to a point? How many craptastic games are there already out and are only on the PC? I don't see developers forcing this on people, I see this as companies trying to make more money from multiple revenue streams. No harm no foul. It's not going to destroy "your" game, but maybe bring in more people that would be highly interested in playing it.
If the argument is that the kiddies are going to be playing, double check any mmo community right now sure there are adults, but there are plenty of kids there too. Some of those kids are well above the age of 21.
What would a pc player have to lose if their game gets ported to a console? Absolutely nothing, you are playing the same game, just on the platform of your choice. It's like the old FPS argument. Sure mouse and keyboard are great, but there's someone out there just as good with a controller.
You have to realize that due to the success of games like WoW, anything and everything is going to be attempted.
No MMO's shouldn't be ported to consoles. Why plague the console kiddies with more crappy games? Once companies start making quality MMO's then they should port to consoles. Otherwise it is just an excuse not to innovate since the console players probably won't be as experienced with MMO's and won't ask for as much.
If I was a game designer that wanted money I would definately port to consoles. I could release crap clones that would probably be picked up and played for lack of alternatives.
Maybe the TESO will be on PC and consoles.
To the people arguing about price and upgrading your PC. I have had mine around 5 years with the only upgrade being the video card which cost around $100. I can play pretty much any game that is on console and pc at highest settings at 1024x768, which I think is what most ps3/360 games can play at max. I'm only running a 7600GT. Even with my old video card I could play any game out there, just not on high settings. Then again I really couldn't care less about graphics.
Your mind is like a parachute, it's only useful when it's open. Don't forget, you can use the block function on trolls.

I have always thought that PC games of all kinds were better than console gaems of the same name. Guess I am just biased thatay toward the PC,just like those Biased toward console games.
...that's all I got to say about that...I am outta here...

When it comes to controls... There is USB ports on both 360 and PS3 so you can always get a mouse. I Think it's an ok idea, MMOs need to evolve a bit and mixing console games and regular MMO might just do that... Or not, still worth trying.
Ofcourse we have seen it all before, "Community based gaming (fancy word for virtual world or mmorpg) is going to dominate everything, becuause look at WoW!". What the writer of that article fails to realize is that for every WoW there are a crapload of virtual worlds failing.

The merging of platforms is an inevitable eventuality. The more the merrier.
"Messy controls" Does not mean just using a controller. It means the entire interface.
I don't need to turn it up past what my monitor's max res. is. However if I connected it to my television, I could easily go to any resolution that my video card supported.
i want it to have real-time combat mmorpg for consoles.... controls and movement like dynasty warrior but in massively multiplayer. easy to control.
Can be.. But for me It shouldn't be..

When I can bank, pay bills, send emails, purchase items, do research, and print pages from a console, then I'm down.
In my opinion,
I have been a PC gamer for roughly 4 years.
Long live console gaming.

Based on what information?
The 8800GTS also cost 600+ dollars when it was released initially. So if you want to go by initial release cost fine.
That was the GTX version. I got my GTS for 400 (about 1 month after the release) which was the initial release price of the 'premium' 360.
Anyway, I'm going to bed. It's been fun.
Should MMO's be ported to consoles?
Yes and I would predict its going to happen fairly soon.
I just built my wife a computer from parts ordered online for less than $800. If you paid $600 for the console itself, you more than likely also paid for some periphrials(sp?). Bringing your total close to $800, give or take. She plays many up to date games.

You really are spending way too much money on upgrading and/or buying your hardware at wrong stores, becuase i have a rig for 680 that will last a good 2 to 3 years.
No, simple.
Heck yes! I love to play The Elder Scrolls Oblivion on my 360, making an MMORPG like that for Live would be awesome.
