Howdy, Stranger!

It looks like you're new here. If you want to get involved, click one of these buttons!

Clickfest games (with no jump button).

Where is the skill/fun in being able to play a game with 1 button? Maybe 10 years ago it was acceptable, but continuing to make games with these craptastic controls is INSANE! HECK, even Super Mario Bros. had it. I for one like being able to run around with WASD... It gives the game a more realistic feeling and requires more skill. Being able to jump off a cliff into water or jumping out of a window to avoid dying is more realistic, fun and more teh SKILLZ.

    I totally feel your pain.

    Deal killers for me are:

    1.  No jumping (example: Guild wars, and to my knowledge FFXI)

    2.  invisible boundaries (example:  EQ II, FFXI)

    3.  inability to even "walk" off ledges of any height (example: Guild wars).

People love to bash WoW for various reasons, but you can't knock the freedom of movement it provides (not to mention the lack of zoning).

I think an obvious example of great player control would be City of Heroes (in my opinion)j.

Again... I TOTALLY feel your pain.     I was ranting about this same exact subject to my roommate this morning.

Are you refering to pvp that essentially constitutes jumping up and down like and idtiot to be harder to hit?

There is a great elegance in the pvp that is guild wars, Lineage 2 etc. I would say that since  every player is on the same plane the skill that it takes gets poured more into what skills to use at which time and how to shut down your opponent.

Not jumping up and down like a jumping bean. That's just inelegant and quite frankly spastic in my opinion.

Who said it had to be like a FPS? Where you need to aim to kill.  So being glued to the ground and clicking to move everywhere is more fun? IMO, it's more boring, robotic/dull, and less skillz. Clickfest games target the lazy people who can play 18hrs a day.

Guild Wars uses WASD movement, also WoW's pvp is crap compared to GW.

Thought Guild Wars was instanced PvP? World PvP will always be the best.

I think world pvp is good when you can loot the corpse, without that its just like killing someone in an arena.

UMMM so you want a game that has no clicking and has jumpinmg, i dont think you can get around the no clicking, there is something you gonna have to click or hit repeatedly for attacks as well as to move around, anyway you look at it there is going to be something you have to hit repeatedly.

i do want jumping in mmorpg's, mayby they can have some platforming areas with moving platforms and traps you jump over.

umm, WASD =/= more skill. It all comes down to numbers, not how much skillz you have. If you want that you're going to have to look for another genre. WASD does not require more skill, a child of 8 can move around using WASD.

You can also jump off a cliff into water with point & click, that has nothing to do with the control scheme.

Did you even read my main post? I was talking about games that only have the option click to move and no jumping... DURR

Jumping makes me feel more free and in control of my character.

I like being able to jump over objects and obstacles in the world to outrun people who are chasing me, or chase down the people I want to kill.

What game allows you to jump off a cliff into water by only clicking (no space or normal jumping)? A game that only requires you to use 1 button is boring/stupid. You'd have to be a zombie to enjoy it.

    Lineage 2.

Also, I don't see how it's boring, it just makes the game less of a chore. I can understand WASD movement in an action type game, but in an mmorpg it's pointless because it just makes moving more complicated without really adding anything.

  • shaeshae Member Posts: 2,509

I've played, and still play, Lineage 2 for years now which is entirely point to move and I absolutely love it. Sure WASD has some benefits and there's been times where I would have LOVED a jump button but it's amazing how you don't miss it when the game is actually good.

It's a matter of personal taste I suppose but I'm never minded it at all.

jumping does nothing in pvp, you will still be hit.

True enough BUT, to play devils' advocate, jumping does give an impression of greater mobility and let's face it, 90% of video game design is about fooling the player(s) into thinking she/he is doing something when they are actually *not.

I do tend to agree that not allowing a player(s) to jump is a somewhat antiquated game design flaw.

Depends on the game really, it does in a game with collision detection....

I really don't see a reason for jumping, if you'll not play a game because of one feature that'll end up under implemented anyways... I'm glad you aren't playing that game and will enjoy it much more without you, it's people with your mind set* that introduce some of the worst updates anyways.

*add this feature or die, judging by how you're talking you've likely been on the wrong side of this mind set a few times yourself if you've played MMOs long enough.

I find it amazing that by 2020 first world countries will be competing to get immigrants.

It's a major flaw in modern games. It's a feature that will make/break a game with a lot of people. Jumping makes the gaming experience more realistic and it's useful in pve/pvp. A game is garbage if it can't allow the player to interact with his environment by jumping.

I agree jumpin adds another dimension to the game and i believe abilities should use the jumpin feature, for instance a rogue in WoW should be able to jump higher than the other classes because jumpin constitutes its ability, but a warrior jumpin with all that armor on, that high is irrealistic, but i believe jumping is somthing important because then u get those stupid situation where you have to go around some freaking thing, instead of being able to make a little hop

  • paulscottpaulscott Member Posts: 5,613

realism? everyone hitting world records for jump height(no fosbury flop here) and distance while getting a lance swung towards their gut and wearing a suit of battle cloth/leather/metal that's thick and strong enough to keep you safe from a few sword swings.

then you go on and completely discredit guild wars PvP because it doesn't have jumping, and that it's too small and local. despite the fact that the average 12 V. 12 guild battle has more going on than the average WoW battle ground(pre battle strat, and a whole lot more during battle strat).

If you like being a flyboy fine, but your fanaticalism and blind-loyalty-requirement really just kills the games you'd otherwise be able to enjoy.  If someone were to release a darkfall clone tommorow without jumping I'd get major kicks and giggles since the idiots would be less of an issue to the people who just want a world that they own-build-control.

If you're gonna use the "should drain energy logic" then running around in plated armor in 100 degree weather w/o water should kill you from dehydration. Jumping makes everything overall more fun.

Last I checked GW shouldn't even be considered a MMORPG. When WoW had/has it's world pvp moments, it destroys GW. I was saying it makes interacting with the world enviroment (GW lacks it) more fun, and makes pvp/pve more fun/realistic. GW is just an instanced hell of crap.
