Vanguard - Brilliant

AmbassadorDvinnAmbassadorDvinn Member UncommonPosts: 339

The game has really turned around and I urge you, even if you have the slightest interest, try Vanguard.

When the game first launched in January 2007 performance issues were all the talk.  Nobody could actually play the game because of the issues with being ahead of its time.  Now, a year and a half later, this is a MMORPG that is established and needs some attention.  A trial version is to be released soon if you don't have the money to go buy it -- but let me reiterate, you won't be disappointed.

Serious death penalties makes every close call an adrenaline rush, and every minor achievement a major victory. This alternative rule-set should be in all MMORPGs.

I totally agree.  Been back to Vanguard, a month ago now and i'm having so much fun.  The game is awesome, i would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a great mmo.  Vanguard has everything your looking for.

I absolutely loved Vanguard when I played, it but I am a soloist, that likes to chat it up, and ran into problems soloing after 40, and the community died on my server. My guild was never on, and there was just no one around.

I truly believe it is the best looking MMO by far, and no MMO even comes close when it comes to exploring and such, so I am soooooo tempted to go back.

I picked up AoC hoping it would suffice, and after a couple weeks am finding the crafting/gathering system to be lacking severly, and there is virtually zero exploration to the game, it is so linear. I am seriously thinking about going back to Vanguard, but am not sure.

How are populations? and the content after level 40 (for the soloist)?

The game is doing great, the devs are working their butts off (and listening to the community, believe it or not), and the community is the best in the genre right now.

Give it a shot...after all...if you're without a game and looking, what do you have to lose?

I got the collectors ed from amazon for $10 dollars to check it out a bit back. I was play CoH at the time (a game i still like allot) but wanted that fantasy exploration feel I like in a RPG. This game has fantasy and exploration in loads! My guild from back when I played WoW went to try Conan ... so I got it to play with them. .. Im back with Vanguard now. (Though I did like Conans landscapes) I ran Conan on high setting at around 20 -30 fps, and Vanguard runs on high settings at 50 -60 fps

Do the characters still look like Chucky? My "rogue" really scared me.

The reason I left Vanguard had everything to do with WoW quest model.

    1. NPCs with exclamation points above their head.
    1. one-click quests that NO ONE bothers to read.
    2. over-the-top xp for completion of these simpleton quests.

As a result of items 1 through 3, the game is EXTREMELY linear. No one bothers to explore; they spend the majority of time looking at their quest journal and looking at the in-game map.

I also didn't like the crafting system. At first it seemed nice that you NEVER have to leave the crafting house....you can make money and items there. But, all considered, I much prefer the EQ style of crafting.

Also, the marketplace was utterly lame. One single NPC per town through which all crafted/dropped goods are bought and sold. It could not be more impersonal. Better to let the players create a market system by themselves.

    Things I love about Vanguard:
    1. slow leveling (if you took questing out of the mix)
    2. Beautiful, huge world
    3. no instances.
    4. Very innovative user interface. Very well done!! You know where group members are at all times, and who has aggro.

Luckily, i don't need you to like me to enjoy video games. -nariusseldon.
In F2P I think it's more a case of the game's trying to play the player's. -laserit

i want to respond to the problems you had with questing.. because i somewhat agree with you.. although i read the quests when I do them..

the great thing about vanguard is that the quests are optional.. i ususally do the ones in an area i decide to explore but you really dont have to do any.. sure its the best path if you are powerleveling.. but powerleveling is pointless in this game.. its about having fun all the way to 50 and beyond

id also like to say its a very cool craftins system that actually requires skill to get the best items..

overall.. this is the best game i have plaued in 6 years... and that was Asherons Call.. as most are saying..VANGUARD IS FIXED (mostly) AAND EVEN IF THE PROBLEMS THAT ARE LEFT ITS THE BEST MMO OUT HANDS DOWN =D

Wow pretty much sums up exactly where I was and thought about the game. I reached level 39 and got sick of standing around yelling 'LFG level 39 Sor'.  So I started 2 more characters and basically I couldn't enter any dungeons as they are all group orientated. I was forced to grind small missions and mobs outside.  Same issue with guild leaving and not enough on to group up with.  Then the usual if you take a week off then you are out of the grouping level band with the guys you did group with.  I like a game where I can solo and group and its my choice. Vanguard does force grouping for the majority of the game.  However its a safe bet now.

Well thats true - groups are most efficient. If you solo, you have to step much more carefully, and, as a rule, dungeons cannot be soloed.

You can however solo in Vanguard. I do this a lot. Of course I dont go into dungeons then. I choose solo content. There is a lot, its only not as rewarding.

I soloed all the way to 37, but that is where i got stuck and left it. I always hoped to see some additional solo content as far as dungeons went, but never did, which is one of the reasons I left.

Not just this post, but many other people have posted positive things about Vanguard in its recent state.  The population is on the rise and groups are easier to find.  We just need to keep getting the word out.

To those that are complaining that VG does not have enough solo content... good luck to you. VG was designed with group content in mind and a minor focus on soloing. You can certainly solo to 50 if you like, but it wont be in dungeons or taking down the named mobs to complete major quest lines. VG never expressed making this a soloable game, nor will they. Group content is the bomb. Raiding is even more exciting.

If you want solo content, wait for Diablo 3.

    Good luck and PEACE!!

Yep got to agree Vanguard is definitley a whole new experience now  !

Wasnt complaining. I had no issues finding stuff to solo until around 37, just hoped to see more. I understood the intention of the game before I beta tested it, and was very happy with the finished product.

I am glad you are enjoying the grouping and raid content, but that is not for me.

I have recently come back and I too am having a blast. Though, performance didn't really get me down the first time around, it was more the direction the game was going in. It seemed SOE was trying to make it a bit too much like WoW. Now they seem to be doing an about face and even polling the community as to whether or not to keep Bind on Pickup in the game.

The only thing that I am sad about is a few months after launch there was an interview with a Sigil employee who talked about PvP future of Vanguard. (on the normal servers, not just the PvP ones). He mentioned flying combat, mounted combat, ship combat (which was supposed to be in at launch anyway :/) and making use of the huge ocean. There would be large territory wars between clans and guilds over the islands between the continents, and even a battleground system of sorts. I love the game, but PvP to mess around with when you've raided all you can raid would be nice.

  • Yeah Vanguard really has turned around a lot since release.  I played it in beta and release, quit, went back to WoW.  And after trying AoC for a week, I quit that too.  I am now back in Vanguard and am loving it.  The vast, seamless world is awesome.  Graphics are top notch, and I love the fact that there is no instancing.

Population is on the rise,  I suggest anyone who is considering it to try it, you can get it off ebay or Amazon for really cheap.  I got a Collectors Edition off amazon with the game, soundtrack and cloth map for like 10$.

SOE is working on a trial island as well if you dont want to shell out the cash. (10$???)

I was there at launch and left after 3 months,I came back 3 months later and find the game in a much better state and played till April 2008.The game is awesome and you can easily get spoiled by the vastness of the world and exploration has it's meaning in Vanguard.

I left because there were not enough people playing on Halgar and there's also a lack of content for high level characters. It`s very discouraging to find only 3 players in Tehatamani harbour,RI or Nusibe Necropolis.

Dungeons in VG are huge and you really have the feel of going down to the centre of the earth but  there's also some open dungeons such as Trengal keep which contains other underground dungeons.

There's only one raiding dungeon at the moment known as Ancient Port Warehouse(APW) This place is amazing and the most challenging I have played in any mmo.The mobs, mini bosses and main Bosses in the Entrance wing are there to help players practicing their team work and tactics until you hit General Vicus .This Boss is a teaser of what's ahead.

VG is an amazing game which had a very bad start. Most of the performance issues had been taken care of and it's really worth a try.

Wow you guys must be seriously hurting for players. Yes the same VG community that on release told everyone that had any problems that they were newbs with $500 best buy computers, and weren't hardcore enough to play in the fanbois game and as such should just leave because they wreren't needed are now begging anybody and everybody to try this dead husk of a game. Funny that.

Please stop lying, pop has been steadly dropping check any of the sites monitoring play time/logged in users. The fact so many of VG's players are here begging for people to waste more money on the game is particularly telling.
