I really enjoy playing this game. It keeps getting better and better. So much to do. Diplo and crafting is done very well. I wish they had some kind of spellcrafting/skillcrafting done in a very similar way as the item crafting. The adventuring gets no better when you have a good group of players to run with.
I left Vanguard earlier this year when the BOP changes went into affect. In the event that those changes are rolled back...and the current official poll is pointing in that direction...then I will definitely be back. Its a great game, and imo far superior to AoC, which I am currently playing in the interim. The classes, the races, the crafting system, the world graphics, the flying mounts...all top notch stuff.
The game has really turned around and I urge you, even if you have the slightest interest, try Vanguard. When the game first launched in January 2007 performance issues were all the talk. Nobody could actually play the game because of the issues with being ahead of its time. Now, a year and a half later, this is a MMORPG that is established and needs some attention. A trial version is to be released soon if you don't have the money to go buy it -- but let me reiterate, you won't be disappointed.
Not really, when I log on prime time I can almost always find groups(I have 2 characters on 2 different servers). But in reality are the servers jam packed full? No.
So get in game and start leveling, it would be a damn shame to make a game this good go to waste. The environment is HUGE and there's allot to see.
Originally posted by boognish75 Originally posted by StinkyPits What really bugged me about Vanguard was the lack of a common sense travel system. There were these stupid poles in the middle of BF Egypt that I had to somehow summon to and it just felt quirky and put in as an afterthought. If they improved the way the world is put together and you can actually travel like a normal game, then I'd try it again. Otherwise, I don't want to get frustrated again with Vanguard and find myself saying over and over again "Who the hell thought of this?"
Not sure if you are regarding the new way to travel or the old way, but most if not all the magor towns and hubs have a transport, it used to suck bad but the new way is much more accesible to go where you need to and group wqith people in other towns and continents.
OH you mean now there is one-click travel? Ugg. When I played VG, we had to run or take a horse to our destination. I do not like insta-click travel; it's like unfurling a big welcome sign to ADD crowd.
Luckily, i don't need you to like me to enjoy video games. -nariusseldon. In F2P I think it's more a case of the game's trying to play the player's. -laserit
The option to use the Riftways (mostly located in major cities and outposts/hubs) is available, but not mandatory. I've been playing for months now and have yet to use a riftway (my personal preference).

Unfortunately Riftways was the perfect solution to encourage sub retention and group play due to low population. Nothing worse to travel 30+ mins to get to a group or waiting the same time for a group member.
just an FYI, 7 million subscribers is not the average. WoW ain't even an MMORPG. its a bunch of instances.
Did i say anything about WoW ? No.. Played WoW for about a week and it was pure shit. What im saying is VG has a below average poplulation... If you think the population is fine your either blind or a liar. The game is fun , but i wish it had a better population.
great game for carebears, er I mean pve'rs. Waste of time for pvp'rs. Its a total flop on the pvp server, the pvp is unbalanced, and theres no reward for pvp. Im so sick of running mazes like the rest of the lab rats. I need a challenge, and Vanguards not going to bring it. yay for PVE games with PVP duct taped to its ass as an afterthought. Good for you pve'rs Im glad you like it. Pvprs? look elsewhere .
Well you stated it accurately. VSOH is not for PVP it is a group questing game and also encompasses crafting and diplomacy. If you like PVP try some game like Shadowbane, but oh I forgot, SB PVP is so unbalanced you would not enjoy it either. PVP with level 30 toons taking out level 10 toons. That is why SB is not longer one of the top tier MMO's. If you want PVP< MMO's need to be developed where the rewards are just and level 30 toons cannot pick on level 10 toons. VSOH is a very good game because PVP is not the main objective. Exploring, crafting and group play is the most important. But also solo content has come a long way. The people posting here enjoy ther game and are asking others to try it and new people should try it. Best MMO on the market right now.
The unwritten rule of MMO's is thus: There are no seconds acts.
If you fail within the first 30 days of launch, you fail forever. It doesn't matter how much you improve, re-design and re-launch a game, those first 30 days are key. Vanguard is now an internet meme synonymous with failure and always will be. Look at EQ2: Horrible launch, things went very badly for it. And yet even now, with all the awesome work the full support of Sony Online could put into it, the game will never reach critical mass. It will forever be in the second or third tier of MMOs that failed to make it.
Now take Vanguard: A MMO that defines what it means to "fail at the gate". Sony barely supports it and Semd *hates* it because he got duped into taking it off Brads hands and only then discovered to his horror what he had. And do you seriously think someone like Smed with that kind of ego would ever allow Vanguard to compete in any way with the EQ franchise? Never, because it didn't originate with Smed. What your seeing with Vanguard and its long, drawn out updates, etc, is just company politics at Sony online. Oh don't blame the devs or anyone else working on the game, they honestly believe and have been led to believe they are fighting the good fight, etc, but the truth is it's all a smoke screen for a bad purchase.
My point is this: All the work under the sun combined with an act of Congress cannot and will not give Vanguard the life it should have had. In the eyes of MMO players in general, the game is dead, dead, dead and it will never come back. Ever.
Brilliant? Quite possibly, yes. Viable? No. Unless the "rules" have changed and that first 30 days no longer matters, then Vanguards fate was written long ago.

SO he should play eve then is what your saying basicly.
the only game where a "level 10" and pick apart a "level 30" with the right set up or with friends.
Even though the performance has improved and a lot of bugs have been fixed, this game just doesn't do it for me... very lacking in style, and creativity.

Maybe you're right but you know I'm personally tired of playing that 'other' game, calling it a MMORPG is demeaning to all the other games that have come before it. Here is what WoW is: An e-sport and instance X. That's all that is left in that game.
EQ2 has depth and is probably the most solid PvE MMORPG out there, it's unfortunate they got off to a bad start. Vanguard is completely open and nearly free of instances(if not completely free) with a vast landscape for housing, raiding, grouping, crafting and diplomacy. A MMO is more than just a gearfest to allot of people, SWG was a MMORPG and it had depth although allot of problems as well.
But here's what Vanguard really has that no other MMOs have except maybe LOTRO, a damn good community and people who really enjoy their game. It's unfortunate that allot of people don't look back at a game later on but that's their own ADD problems they'll have to deal with. They go back to WoW and lock themselves in WSG,AV,AB,EoTS or Pole dancing(Arenas) and so be it.
Did i say anything about WoW ? No.. Played WoW for about a week and it was pure shit. What im saying is VG has a below average poplulation... If you think the population is fine your either blind or a liar. The game is fun , but i wish it had a better population.
Well, there aren't many servers, but the few they have are always lively, except the pvp server maybe, I dunno, I'm not a PvPer. What does it matter how many actual people are playing? As long as the server you are on has a healthy population... big frackin deal.
Seradon has tons of people on it, there are always groups to be had for all levels, even PUG raids. And in this game, the PUGs are really good!

Wow, you are so right!! What was I thinking??
And you know, there it is!! Page 512, section 5, paragraph 23: "If a game is released, no matter how much potential, and it is not PERFECT, you are in no way allowed to ever look at, consider, read about, download trial, accept buddy key, try or subscribe too. If so, you, your family, friends and all associated will burn in the depths of hell for trying to find something you might enjoy".
Well I am sooo glad you reminded me of this brainless rule, that only a freaking moron could have conjured up, because I was starting to thoroughly enjoy playing Vanguard. It may be too late for my soul, but maybe this post can save someone else. I best burn my computer and attempt to absolve my sins for playing VG and liking it. I cant even imagine how ANY video game producer even got out of the gate??
Great post. I laughed my arse off it was so funny. What comedy club can I pay to see you perform at?? Oh, by the way, best burn your own computer too, because I doubt any game will ever come out that is flawless from day one and if it isn't, they only 30 days to fix EVERYTHING or else. And what do you find on the market that is so flawless for your gaming dollars (Solitaire doesn't count)?
Seriously, VG doesn't make for a good PVP game, but it has it. VG doesn't have an extremely high population, but 99% that it does have, are first class (and still growing). By the way, they dont have good character customization, but the graphics for gear are awesome. For me, I can do without these things, I find them quite minor in my "Book of Gaming Rules". Do many of us enjoy the game?? Absolutely and anxious for more. Should people ignore this game?? Thats up to the individual. Some feel they are being robbed by Sony. Some feel like encouraging them to keep developing, improving and adding to VG. I vote for the second option. The game is great, open, beautiful and most importantly... fun!!
Good luck and Peace!! ( I'm going back to my deck of cards. I know they work!! )
Your cards are bugged. You might as well put them away. Don't bother getting another Ace of Spades - your cards are forever tainted - Solitaire forever broken.
I cant win... I'm missing a few checker pieces too. How about that game with rocks and a board with little pockets on it?? Dangit, i think I need dice for it ..
Well, I bought it two weeks ago for 10 Euros, been playing ever since without any major issues on my 5-year-old PC, settings Mid to High (ok, it struggles sometimes in cities but i've only got a P4 2.8). and so far i'd say it's worth every single cent spent.
i'm even tempted to expedite buying a new PC so i can get everything maxed (I'll be buying a new PC anyway, not just for a game).
And with the upcoming character customization/animation revamp in GU6, i can see myself playing this game for quite some time...
Good game, i'm happy i never bought it at launch so i can enjoy it now.
For anyone that is interested in getting Vanguard - there is an $11.00 Collector's Edition on Amazon. I bought it and expedited shipping for $17.99. Just thought I'd throw that out there.

Have to totally agree with the OP Vanguard is brilliant now , having trouble deciding to play this or Conan at the moment !
I have no problem making this decision. I actually look forward to Vanguard, not AOC. I have no interest in AOC, at all.
