I have to agree with the OP in a sense. Instancing has become the norm in western mmorpgs and I disagree with their current overuse. Hopefully SGW will find a happy medium, because we already know from the devs that there will be instances. I could live with something similar to how DAOC is set up, I think they did a decent job with determining which areas should have loading zones, most of the large land masses are open and seamless, and there is instancing for special dungeons but not the open dungeons.
Then you probably won't be pl;aying many MMO's in the future. There is simply too much going on in a large MMO for servers to handle without extreme lag. So I suggest you buy a console game.
sorry, but my 10 years in world class programming says otherwise
1. instancing (or in this case - levels) currently belongs to consoles
if you are going to release your MMO, or are thinking about it, it has to be designed with "instancing"
consoles dont have virtual memory, and theres not much you can upgrade on it
computers can run anything.. a stable 1000mhz can run a modern game, just at a great disadvantage (assuming the game doesnt absolutely require it)
frankly, designing an MMO to work on consoles is asking for death, esp. now
2. have you ever played world of warcraft? i bet you have
proof right there... and it works great on my old 1400mhz on the biggest of raids, with low graphics on, of course
i hardly have any hardware acceleration on it
now, this is where you will say "but the graphics are shit"
its just graphics.. it doesnt really affect anything BUT YOUR OWN COMPUTER
yes, thats right.. it has NOTHING to do with the other end - the servers
do you know what will happen if they release a Crysis MMO?
some people will upgrade their computers, and some will moan and then upgrade, given that the MMO is up to par, or better than the competition
in a nutshell
yours truly
EDIT: its come to my attention that you werent specifically mentioning graphics, but the obvious still stands -
if you can hold X people in the same "room", you can also hold X people in the same "world"
the leap of faith here is directors will allow programmers to take up the medium-heavy task of programming smooth transitions, which makes a world "continous".. its not an academy-graduate skill
it requires the MMO to be built for it from the start, and you have to have the economy and manpower
small MMO developers will choose instancing, and not tell anyone about it
I believe EVE is still non instanced, it was when I played it. When you fly thru a gate you load a zone aka a star system, but everyone shares the same geographic area. There are not multiple copies of the same geographic area for separate groups of players. Anytime a specific geographic area exists more than once it is an instance. Old school MMOGs like classic EQ and Horizons didn't employ instancing and I want to play a real MMOG like that again.
Hey there. Not bashing you or anything. You have just as much right to your opinion as anyone else. You might want to make sure you understand your example here a bit better though. Just some friendly advice.
I'll not bore you with a long winded explanation, and leave it up to you to find out about it yourself if you want to, but there are some very specific reasons why EvE can do what it does, and these aren't things that other MMOs can really copy.

you basically said nothing with your post
are you referring to the clustering one-server world? or are you talking about why its not instanced?
there is absolutely no reason for a PC game to be instanced, unless the programmers are sub-par
or the game director wants to hold the door open for a console version, in which case he should be burned with cigarettes
I don't care if it's permanent instancing like dungeons in WoW, or instancing on demand to prevent lag like EQ2 or AoC, or scenario/mission/quest instancing like LoTRO. If there is any instancing, any at all, I will not play this game. Are you listening Devs?
I like open worlds to explore AND I like instancing. I think good games have both.
Exploring an open non-instanced world is a lot of fun. Meeting new people in a wide-open evironment is also fun. Waiting for my turn at a spawn point isn't fun. Waiting for my crack at "the" key that everyone needs in a non-instanced environment also isn't fun. Lagging out because their are a bazillion players in one area isn't fun etc..
Instancing or non-instancing isn't the real debate for me. I think it's more about how instancing is used. It can be used poorly, or it can be used wisely.
If there's so much instancing that there isn't an open world (or worlds) to explore and meet people in, that's a drag.
Personally, I love instancing. It reduces lag, over-crowding and camping of whatever mob is needed to complete a quest. I am all for instancing. GO DEVS!!!
I think some instancing on highly contested boss mobs is required, I will never again play a game like Everquest which had people who "farmed" the same drop for hours and days at a time.
I think some instancing on highly contested boss mobs is required, I will never again play a game like Everquest which had people who "farmed" the same drop for hours and days at a time.
Instancing isn't required to solve that problem. Only a retarded developer would think it is.
It's real simple. Instead of boss mob dropping a unique tradeable one of a kind item, boss mob drops a no trade quest item which each player character can only qualify for once when accepting the quest. The boss mob only drops x copies of said quest item for x amount of players in group who are triggered for the quest and quest items can only be redeemed once by each character who qualified for the quest via certain level/skill/faction minimum requirements. Boss mob drops nothing else, no items, no coin, and gives no experience when killed. Now there is no motivation to camp boss mob and he can have a fast respawn time so no bottleneck exists.
Turn in quest item to questgiver in city for the unique tradeable item.
The reason developers don't choose this system over instancing is pure laziness. It's easier to create an instance than code a few mechanics.

I don't think it's laziness I think limiting the amount of times you can get a item, a unique item no less, is a bad game mechanic. Because people will fight over who gets to finsh off the boss regardless of whether it will benefit or not. Having several people after the same boss in the same area, which will occur in spite of fast respawn times if the game is popular, will not mean they will interact with each other. People in a group in an instance have a unique experience as apposed to being able to see the boss, see people kill the boss, and any spoilers to the story that may come from being near the boss without actually fighting it. Now you said only people of a certain faction/skill/whatever level can recieve the quest I assume that means to be allowed to kill the boss which is fine. However if you can not even enter or come near the boss without a certain requirement that's pretty much a pseudo-instance.
Any smart game developer is not lazy. Developers of the less intillegent variety can be lazy but that doesn't matter because they make bad games with hard working attitudes too. On the other hand if a developer and his associates are smart and buisness savy they will never cut a corner from their product if it will significantly reduce sales.
Im fine with instancing dungeons so everyone isnt fighting over a mob. Nothing worse than losing out on a possible drop because there are 50 people with addon timers camping the spot.
However I dont want general zones instanced. What Age of Conan did went too far. I play MMO's for the Massive part. I dont want to be seperated by a mirrored instance of that same zone. Its a cheap excuse to allow developers to code an inferior product.
Im not buying the excuses and frankly saddened to see that some players have. Advanced servers and coding can handle 5000 or more around without lagging so stop lying to us. Hell, EVE can handle 25,000 on a single server. Many games 5 yrs old+ have little to zero instancing and had great graphics for their time.
I expect SGW to have loading screens when I take a stargate to another world. What I demand though is that I better load into the same dam world as everyone else does. If that isnt the case, I will immediately cancel (or never purchase the game if I learn of this before).

what game are you playing that has no instancing? what MMO, that is?
could we please get correspondent writers and moderators, on the eve forum at mmorpg.com, who are well-versed on eve-online and aren't just passersby pushing buttons? pretty please?
1) You hate raiding. Whether its an instance or not, a Guild Leader (GL) or committee of some kind will determine whether or not you get any loot. This is VERY common. Games like Wow, EQ, etc.... any game that has raids is going to have this. Not everyone can get every item. Someone is going to lose and it sounds like you don't like losing.
2) I definately get the impression that you don't like PvE games or PvP games where folks can opt all the out of the PvP part of a game. Games like Neocron which are mostly open PvP (a few zones are non-PvP) where a player who puts in his Law Enforcer chip and thus opts out of PvP entirely would probably anger you as well. How dare the devs not allow you to gank someone!
I seriously doubt that you meant to ... but you are coming off as a spoiled little brat who is threateningto pick up his toys and go home if he doesn't get his way. No where in your original post do you try to gather support for your cause. No where do you list any benefits to having zones instead of instances. You present no reasons what-so-ever why anyone should support your position. If you want a better example of how to gather support, read the various anti-PvP articles posted throughout MMORG.com. Many folk have gone to great lengths to state their reasons and have presented the benefits of al strictly PvE game. Whether you agree with them or not, you will see several people taking their side and supporting their position. If you want to gather support for a particular idea, at the very least you must give solid reasons as to why your view is a valid one and state the benefits of that idea.

Very good points indeed and even though I agree with them I'll play the devil's adovocate for the sake of keeping this rather intresting thread alive.
Raidless, pve only games with no instancing and a fully persistent world invite a more casual gaming audience perhaps younger children and middle age adults which is a gaming market not really tapped into by most MMOs. I'm not saying we make a gaming that's utterly unattractive to regular non-casual and hardcore gamers. But use the revenue from that untouched demographic to make a more hardcore version of the game we've already made. So when the children become teens or when the adults have a midlife crisis and a need to become cool we'll have a game that is familiar enough to bring them back to us time and time again.
Then you probably won't be pl;aying many MMO's in the future. There is simply too much going on in a large MMO for servers to handle without extreme lag. So I suggest you buy a console game.
QFT. Yeah, instancing is the way of the future, especially if more games try to release cross platform, consoles and PC's.

Yes by all means the person should go on over and raise their concerns. New and different viewpoints are always welcome there, as long as they're done in a mature and constructive manner that is. I'd suggest using the search when they get there too, and post their thoughts in one of the many threads that have been created discussing this very issue.

Blizzard added instanced dungeons to WoW because of player demand. Originally the dungeons weren't instanced at all.
