How many of you are sick of Orcs n Elves style mmos?

I was wondering how many feel the way I do and are sick and tired of seeing more fantasy based mmo's in development. Why can't devs develope other game styles like maybe ,Old West,A space mmo thats not Star Wars or Star Trek? They made a console game Mass Effect and its a damn good game with decent lore to boot. I think Game developers need to start being a little more creative the Orcs n Elves are being driven into the ground.

I agree, I'm tired of fantasy MMOs which is why I'm going to hide in EVE until SGW releases next year, I may try Earthrise also.

this has been a pretty common trend amongst players lately.

::sigh:: if only there was a good sci-fi mmo i could play... guess i'm stuck with old fashioned rpgs

Nah, can not say I agree.  I have no problem with the elf and orc world.  I AM tired of the poorly done cookie cutters.  I woul PREFER a true medieval themed game, could do without the elves and orcs.  I do enjoy high fantasy, and post apocalyptic fallout.  As I see it, there are enough elves and orcs being killed on a daily basis that it does not hurt to see a few more birthed... as long as they are done right, and not imbred rejects. :)

Pretty simple really, because Orcs n Elves (or fantasy games in general) have proven to be big sellers and few games outside of this formula can be considered successes.

Till some company hits it big with something outside of the box, expect lots more Orcs N Elves games.

I agree. They need to get new ideas for fantasy. Its hard to get developers to move away from popular themes.

I don't mind orcs and elves. If they are done right, as the poster above says, I'm in! There are WAY TOO MANY cookie cutters out there which, quite frankly, ruins part of the experience. I actually do not like sci-fi at all, modern times (in terms of games) and things related. I LOVE the 'sword and shield' stuff.

The lack of Elves, Orcs, and other extremely typical fantasy monsters is one of the reasons I like Asheron's Call. There are a lot of unique and interesting creatures. Also the only playable characters are humans, which is a different approach I happen to like, but it seems most do not.

Honestly I could care less what setting an MMO is in.  I just care about game mechanics and if the lore is decent.

Though one setting I'd love to see in an MMO is Steampunk.  You can get so deep and artistic with steampunk.

I just want to see more MMOs with markets like EVE, thats the only MMO i've seen that I personally could enjoy a completely combat-less experience.

I'm getting a little sick of the typical fantasy MMO, although not entirely, but I would gobble up a well done low sci-fi MMO.

It is true that fantasy is a mainstay of the rpg genre, so fantasy is here to stay. But take a step back and look to the bottom left at the games in development.

Aion: Fantasy based but seems to have a different twist.

Champions Online: Superhero. Hopefully it will be a worthy successor to my current game of choice City of Heroes.

    Spellborn: Fantasy

    Darkfall: Fantasy

    Earthrise:Sci Fi/Apocalyptic

    Fallen Earth: Sci Fi

    Huxley: Sci Fi/FPS

    Jumpgate: Sci Fi

Requeim: Again, technically fantasy but I like the horror twist

    SUN: Fantasy

Stargate Worlds: Sci Fi with a peppering of fantasy

Warhammer: Fantasy but based on a very strong franchise.

So as it turns out, the future may not be so bleak for all you fantasy haters.

I'm a die hard D&D fan, I'll never grow tired of the fantasy games derived from it.

Not that I'm adverse to other genre's, I would love to see a Gamma World or Rifts based game. I'm just not going to ever get tired of my elves and orcs.

I agree 100% with this guy. Although lore isnt a big deal to me, (since im there to kill everyone it messes up "there version" of why im there anyways)

If i had to choose a setting fantasy would be dead last. I would love to see a "mad max", "bioshock" , "vietnam jungle"  setting.

I would like to see MMOs from here forth contain only midgets in their worlds.

I'm not talking about gnomes and dwarves either. Proper midgets.

    That is all.

The only reason some of the fantasy games have done well is because there has not been another genre thats been polished and finished when it released,Except maybe Eve and they have done that game right. I would play eve if it had a ground game along with space .

I'd prefer something with a real medieval setting, like Dark Age of Camelot...though not quite as much magic...but really, a Dark Age of Camelot 2 (I'm not talking about WAR) would be awesome. No Orcs, and if you didn't like Elves, don't choose Hibernia, just kill em with Albion bwahaha.

    --------------------------------------
A human and an Elf get captured by Skaven. The rat-men are getting ready to shoot the first hostage with Dwarf-made guns when he yells, "Earthquake!" The naturally nervous Skaven run and hide from the imaginary threat. He escapes. The Skaven regroup and bring out the Elf. Being very smart, the Elf has figured out what to do. When the Skaven get ready to shoot, the Elf, in order to scare them, yells, "Fire!"

Y'know, Ascension08 makes a great point.  I hate fantasy but if there was a historical medievel MMO I'd play it.  Like one based on the crusades or something.  Or maybe just have set in like 1,000 A.D. and you can be a Gaul, or part of the Holy Roman Empire, or a Byzantine, or Mongol, or one of the Caliphates, et cetera.

How interesting that would be. Of course it would have to be completely devoid of all magic and be a sandbox.

I'd love an MMO loosely based on the Muslim Renaissance, particularly a mixture of Moroccan and Turkish cultural references. :)

Yeah, as if changing one element would changing anything about the thing.

Changing from elves and orcs to, lets say, Vulcans and Klingons, will of course totally change the game experience.

I'm very, very, very far from "being sick" of them. I want them to be done right. Which is far from what we have now - a world of stupid WoW clones, with very few exceptions in between.

Let's hope Bioware can cook something up and get rid of the fantasy for awhile.
