Well, orcs and elves style doesn't necessarily make it an bad game and just because you have the basic orcs and elves doesn't mean you have to basic pre-set lore that comes with them.

Do agree that most orc and elves type of mmo's don't really do that they are not being creative enough with their lore and just re-use the old standard which is over used and pretty much everyone is done with it.

There are actually quite a lot of other themed mmo's around EVE, WoW, upcoming warhammer and Aion.

Something I would like to see is an good well funded p2p sandbox mmo based on Chinese or Japanese history. There are plenty of these games around but they are all free to play with item malls and you can easily see these games are not that well made and very repetitive. The Chinese and Japanese culture and history make for some great lore and could turn out very interesting if someone would put some efford and money in to it and not focus on just the asian market.

I do agree with an post here that an game like mass effect makes for some great material to make an mmo out of. I mean the game is great if it had normal multiplayer it would be godlike if it was an mmo it would be beyond godlike and probably an all time best seller if they did it right.

I hate fantasy mmo's meanwhile... always the same shit...

i must agree I am very tired of high fantasy based MMO's they are done to death. but there is very little choices out there. Id love to get my hands on a decent to superb Cyberpunk or scifi MMO. I liked eve but got deathly boring trying to mine, and kill rats (grind anyone??) but the social aspects to the pvp were amazing, but just couldnt sit there for hours on end hunting rats, or miningm y ass off.

i hope they change the game a bit to involve some questing/corp jobs etc. so there is some fun, some immersiaon in the game. but oh well, we can hope cant we? for a good scifi MMO?

there are a few Im interested in mind coming out 2009/2010+ but thats a good wait. and another im working on a dsytopian Cyberpunk MMO, but thats on as a side project with some friends sand will need alot of funding to get it off the ground, but thats more work than anything lol. oh well lets hope the industry takes heed and start pumping out some decent scifi/cyberpunk MMO's.

We're screwed eitherway; don't get me wrong, I love sci-fi on one hand and I have always been fond of the WH40k miniature games and it's setting, but it's still got elves and greenskins albeit under a different name. You can call a cowturd a cowpie, it'll still stink.

I couldn't agree with you more

but lets hope game developers release a nice polished scifi mmo (hopefully fallen earth and the bioware mmo will do this)

Personally, I'm tired of medieval fantasy MMOs. There are way to many of those and even more on the horizon.

Now a scifi MMO, like Mass Effect, I can really get into. I don't particularly share the OP's hate towards elves and orcs, and Warhammer 40K is one of the games I'm waiting for.

I don't mind Orcs and Elves so long as the story and game are intriguing.

Ultimately Orcs and Elves merely fill roles. If they used aliens, it would potentially amount to the same thing. This Species vs This Species.

Sorta agree with OP yet only half way

I believe it's the quality of the game that will get most people to play.  Lets say for instance a fantasy based MMO goes live next year - was a secret and no one knew about.  No anticipation...nothing...

It turns about to be a great game in all aspects.  99% of people will play it -  if it's enjoyable - it will have longevity, that's all - fantasy-based or not.  But it is hard to please the masses.  MMO's are mostly a fantasy based genre - with a little sci-fi mixed in.  Other genres will be too much of a risk i think.  Ideas are great - but the realities i think would be harsh.

I think most of us come from fantasy based MMO's for me it was EQ1 - and it has been said too many times.  Nothing is like the first one.  The platform has become saturated.

So for me, really doesnt matter if a game has orcs, elves or not.  I dont even care if it has just one race.

Take AoC as an example - just on races - nothing else.  They are getting slammed in all forums for only having the human race.  No beast races, no 5 foot frogs, no wolves, rats, cat people, no orcs, ogres, Just the human race from different parts of the world.  But it is keeping true to Howard's books.  I dont know - its hard to please everyone I guess.  So if they give in to half the ppeople and come out with a "beast" flavor of the month race.  Then it will piss the other 50% of people off.

I'm holding out hope that Blizzards next MMO will be different, although that's probably a couple years away.

Not me. Orcs and elves forever is just fine.

Trammies need to stop polluting the MMORPG landscape. They already have enough games in which to emote hugs and sell garbage by the banks.

What would be really confusing is if Orcs lived in shiny white cities and talked with an educated accent while sipping tea and controlling magic, while Elves lived in primitive settlements and talked like dey never got da edumacation.

I know it's a bit dumb but at least something different right? You'd probably have to change the names around a bit for it to be close to being accepted though, hah.

    --------------------------------------
A human and an Elf get captured by Skaven. The rat-men are getting ready to shoot the first hostage with Dwarf-made guns when he yells, "Earthquake!" The naturally nervous Skaven run and hide from the imaginary threat. He escapes. The Skaven regroup and bring out the Elf. Being very smart, the Elf has figured out what to do. When the Skaven get ready to shoot, the Elf, in order to scare them, yells, "Fire!"

Fantasy DOES NOT equal Orcs and Elves

we had fantasy before we had Tolkien.

I cant say im sick of it .. didnt like it in the first place.

Early Neocron days were such sweet times. Too bad that game was so limited by a small budget.

Would pick Sci-Fi anyday over Fantasy.

Well Ithe problem is so many game with orcs and elves suck. Why would it matter that the skin of an AI-computer looks like an futeristic robot or an orc. Infact WoW could be transformed into an futeristic game by just changing the skins of the building/charaters (This would be a major operation, but it would be posible :P)

Also if you look into it the majority of the mainstream MMO in development do not contain orcs and elves. Face of Mankind: Rebirt, Fallen Earth, Jumpgate, Huxley, Champions Online, and a few more. Also there are plenty game out now with do not have orcs and elves. Game like Pirates of the Burning Sea, Planetside, Wurm Online, Roma Victor, Second Life (You could make them though if you really want to :P), Star Wars Galaxies, Tubula Rasa, WWIIOnline, Eve Online.

If I am not mistaken there is an western MMO (not sure if it is in the making or out already) and one non-SW and ST space MMO in the making and one is out already. It is however treu that the fantasy theme dominated the market, there is however plenty of choices to play something else.

It is also imported to note that the MMO genre is maturing right now. It simply needs a couple of bold poeple willing to let it grow and make a couple of good MMO's. Devs enough willing to take this journey, investers however are not. Just look what happen to Wish, died becouse of the money. The game was less buggy in beta then most game released nowadays and it would have been an hit if it had finished.

Fantasy is a timeless genre and will always be popular.  While I am open to other settings, I see nothign wrong with Orcs and Elves in a fantasy environment.

I might be tired of poorly done fantasy MMO's, but I think much of the gamer base is eager for a quality new fantasy MMO, because that's an unfilled niche at the moment.

I think this says it all in a backward way.

It isn't that this guy is actually 'tired' of fantasy mmo's - its more like he's a sci-fi guy now and for the future.

In the same way, there are fantasy 'guys' who are for fantasy now and for the future.

Would you ask a football fan why he's not sick of football video games? Don't they have enough? Well, not for a football fan.

You won't see fantasy mmo's dry up or go away as long as there is a huge fantasy subculture that is into gaming.

There are a lot of gamers who never had any fantasy experience before picking up WoW - or whatever fantasy mmo. They didn't read fantasy books, they weren't huge fantasy movie goers, unlikely that they played any pen and paper fantasy, probably didn't pretend to be a knight in shining armor as a child - those are the ones who get tired of the 'orcs and elves' theme. But many many many come to the fantasy games after they are into the books, movies and pen and paper games - for them, it isn't a matter of 'same ol' orcs and elves' - its more of a law - the debate among them is 'did they get the elves and orcs right?'

I think the OP's main complaint is not

    "Oh no more Fantasy games"

    its

"Oh no more fantasy games that look like I'm playing LOTOR"

We all enjoy a little fantasy now and then, but frankly why can't people go back to a time before Orcs and Mythril and all that crap?

    hence why I loved DAoC

    NO orcs

In case you folks are not aware JRR Tolkien MADE UP the word Orc and the word Mythril.

ANYTHING that uses those words are just using his ideas again.

MAKE YOUR OWN WORD FOR A GREEN MONSTER AND FOR A SHINY METAL!

    GEEEZE!!!!!!
