Sure, VG had its flaws, but every game does (including AOC...). With the release of AOC, well...have been stripped from us. Vanguard Age of Conan
Instancing: VG hardly consists of ANY instances. Today, Lobo and I were doing a quest where we had to explore a dungeon.. Sure, we both ended up running for our lives, but we ran for out lives with NO INSTANCING. In Vanguard, if you see it, you can explore it.
Well...Age of Conan is full of instancing. An instance here and an instance there...well, it just takes away from the immerse feeling of an MMO NOTE: There is nothing wrong with instances if they are worth it (like in Citadel of Sorcery) but in a game like AoC it is NOT worth it!
Crafting: Vanguard has an amazing crafting system, with different twists and turns..There is always a risk of making that error that could cost you,
AoC's crafting is hardly even complete
Gameplay: Vanguard will always keep you busy. There are three things you can get to level 50 on: Crafting, Adventuring, and Diplomacy. Each level is filled with interesting quests and new things to do
Gameplay: AoC hardly has anything to past level 50, which forces players to grind.
These are just a few reasons of why VG clearly surpasses AoC. AoC was developed for a console, and it will always be that way. Vanguard is the true MMO of PvE games.
Some people like instances and some don't ... I sure hate the cistren
You play vanguard right? crafting amazing and different uh? It's useful but takes forever to do anything with, the worst grind I ever did.
What are you even talking about grind? For the love of god, vanguard was designed to be grindish since it was mocking old eq. I guess you never tried gaining fractions, crafting system, diplomacy yet right?
Clearly you have no idea what you are saying.... can I get some of your crack, must be good stuff.
Mike I played/play both games and I will tell you why there is no reason for this kind of comparision.
1- Both games are uniques in different ways, MMO community should be happy with both and not try create a competition that is not real.
2- Instances are very good to storyline quests, you can experience this in AoC or in EQ2 ( in places like Unrest ). You are saying instances in AoC are not worth, can you elaborate that? Instances in AoC have the same positive aspects than instances in Everquest2.
3- Vanguard release and first year was even worse and more broken than Age of Conan start, kicking AoC using Vanguard as reference is hipocrisy.
4-I left Vanguard not becouse I dont like the game, but because changes like the apearance cut off is the kind of thing we expect in alphas not even in betas, AoC need fixing and upgrades, but Vanguard for SoE still in early beta and it will be for a couple of years.
Devs from Vanguard are not serious, I know Funcom has issues with support, but after the upcoming new mounts where they decided all creatures in Vanguard should work as mount ( or almost that ) and implemented BOP after one year of game, it is clear, they are lost.
5- Vanguard and Age of Conan have nice and unique classes, very expressive visual, more mature quests, good music, but they are different games, again, there is no reason to create a false competition between both games.
6-Both games have a very expressive RPG atmosphere.
7- You are wrong about community, the only reason community in Vanguard seems to be better is because it is one of the smaller communities in MMOs, when Vanguard was more popular, you could rate Vanguard and AoC community at the same level.
8-Im not sure you play AoC, there is a lot of quests at 50-60, you just need to look for it, Vanguard has less adventure content and Diplomacy is a bit lost after 30, I really cant understand someone telling AoC is grindy and use Vanguard as an opposite example.
9- As I said both are good and unique games, both games should suceed, but SoE is not seious about Vanguard anymore.
10-I like both games, I played/play both games, but after the huge release of Age of Conan, it is easier to belive Funcom will make AoC grow, the same will not happen with Vanguard any time soon, SoE already proved Vanguard has absolute no priority.
11- Dont try to belive Vanguard is getting a good amount of players, the only populated server is seradon ( only one ) and even seradon has a empty feeling in some areas... this is really sad as I said, I enjoy both games.
12-(edit) I must add some info about the console issue, games like Eq2, DDO, CoV and GW have similarities with AoC and they are all PC games, the 360 version will be different than the PC version, some games like Bioshock came first in the 360, and it is easy to realize, Bioshock is a perfect PC title, so this console thing, is not exacly accurate. The idea that a console game has less quality than a PC game is wrong, most of Xbox 360 are typical PC games.
13-After the bad release of Vanguard, even after a lot of fixes, a lot of people that didnt even play the game were always there trying to make everyone belive Vanguard was a piece of crap, I cant understand a Vanguard player trying to do exacly the same with another mmo.

That is the only comment that needs to be said. Don't get me wrong, I agree with you. Vanguard has lots of potential, however it is no where near reaching that potential yet and the team is to small and to slow to get there. It also has just as much potential to coast along on life support or get yet another SOE fist job.
Odds are if it isn't there at launch or a year and a half later, it never will get there. Sorry, but there really isn't much reason to pay for potential nor compare two games that aren't really there yet as if one is better than the other. I don't see the point of comparing two games with potential that are both lacking/missing things as if one will come out any better at the end of the discussion. It doesn't fix any of their respective short commings.
All have valid points, but the difference is, Vanguard has pulled itself out of the gutter, and becoming a cult classic. I really can't see AoC becoming anything like that specially being made for the 360. It is a massive commercial pile that a massive commercial audience wants, blood boobs and easy mode game play.
The trash mobs in raids in AoC are harder than most raid bosses in LotRO, true story.
Yet another promotion for the dieing Vanguard! Listen people! Do NOT give Vanguard a go. Go and play some other game instead if you dont like AoC. EQ2 for example.....thats better than Vanguard. Of course its totally up you. You have been warned.
Promotion? I ran across a Vanguard screenshot the other day and it brought back memories of when I played. I was one of the lucky ones who could run the game, but it still wasn't perfect, I ended up quitting. Now a year later, decided to try the 10 day trial and I'm having a blast. I thought my performance was good before, but now I can max everything out and run flawlessly on a geforce 7950. I'm not employed by SOE (hate the company actually, would prefer Sigil be running things) and I am not a fanboy, as I've been away for a year.
It really is a great game, and for open worlds to explore, no other MMO even comes close to Vanguard at the moment. I don't know what your problem is, probably just trolling, but you obviously haven't played the game.
I tried vanguard again recently to see if it improved from the time it was released and I have to say the combat animations is just so bland it makes the game suck. I had watched the videos on youtube before it came out and thought dam that looks boring.
you're joking, character in Vanguard looks like they're walking on the moon when they're jumping, the graphics are great but it feel so empty, grass, trees, rock and thats it, house have got like one table and a chair inside, character look ugly as hell. vg is bland.
try comparing both at release, I dont think OP remember vanguard launch very well,
AoC artwork is a lot nicer then VG, seriously im not a fanboy or anything but wear some glasses man.
if the op reply i bet hes going to says something about instances
this all smells of desperation on the part of Vanguard players. It seems like eevry month a group of vanbois decides to go viral with how VG is FIXED and how Population numbers are SKYROCKETING!.. Just take a look at the official VG forums youll find threads encouraging just this type of nonsense hoping to dupe people with unsubstantiated claims of the game being FIXED and rose colored views of the future into paying a months subscription. Shame on you Vanbois, you've fooled many of us with your claims, but the majority of us have wised up to you schemes and now you are getting desperate and trying to stir up drama because thats really the only time people even pay attention to VG anymore.

Now if you really want to compare these two games please do it in a honost way and please look at where Vanguard was 1 month after release, and please stop pretending you can compare games in it's current state together. Lets face it if Vanguard would have released the way it did at the same time AoC we would have seen Vanguard even failing much harder then it did. Only thing what was good for Vanguard is t6hat they had time to clean up the game to where it seems it is now.
Oh and before you begin i was one of the few who already enjoyed Vanguard from beta to 3 monts after release but only left due to the limited time i had to spend on the game which to me gave me that sence of hte more traditinal type of MMORPG, something i don't feel ...yet....with AoC, but AoC is offering me some more pleasure for the limited time i can spend on the game then Vnaguard had. If i had lots of time to spend on these games i probebly would play Vanguard, but times have changed, and i find it sad to see insecure people trying to promote their game in sections not meant for those games.
Oh and one more thing Vanguard was supose to also become also a pc titel aswell a Xbox360 titel, but geuss parting Microsoft put a end to that.
Vanguard....is it a good game ? No....but its a game with potential. With only a skeleton crew of coders Vanguard is now recovered from horrible launch and lives up to its original potential. Vanguard has bones of a gigantic good game. All developers have to do is to sculpt some meat.
So how about AOC...is it a good game? Yes....but only for a week or two (or perhaps a month if you are really thick skinned) No mater how hard Funcom team works they can not fix what is fundamentaly broken. They will never be able to make AOC non instanced , to remove loading screens , make PVP sieges be less chaotic lag fest AOC has bones of XBOX MMO experiment. And nothing can save it from that , aside from starting from a scratch
Vanguard is MMORPG , AOC is Online RPG
I agree, there just isn't much beef to AoC. Maybe after a few expansions it might be worth paying a sub, for maybe a month, it would take double the content they have now to make it worth it. But right now, most eveyone will have ripped through all of their content (that is worth playing) in less than a month.
Vanguard however, has so much replayability, there is just so much to do, even just adventuring, you can find unknown areas all over the place.... The game is huge. Not to mention a very in depth crafting system and diplomacy. That is what a mmorpg is supposed to be, something you can play LONG TERM, get lost in and really immerse yourself.
AoC is something you play for a few weeks, and thats about it. I suppose pvp would give you a bit of replayability, but even the pvp in Conan sucks with horribly balanced classes, skills and stats that dont do anything... yet are there for some reason, why? I don't know and either does Funcom. I guess it is to make you feel good about reading the big lie that is the Tooltip... it's a big WTF kinda game.
I tryed coming back to VG and it still not that fun for me, the quest arnt that good and there is no one really plaing it. so the points being made are pointless, AoC and VG are to way diffrent games.
people can be such hypocrites. We all know how Vanguard was at launch and just comparing VG and AoC at launch AoC is miles ahead of where VG was. Its taken Vanguard nearly a year to get to where its at.. AoC in a year will be great and still have 5x the population and potential that VG has.
So what? It's fixed now, and it is a great game. If something is good now, I do not care how the game was a launch. If VG still was in the condition is was at launch, well then of course not as many people would be playing. But why wait 6 months for AOC to be fixed when you already have a complete game with no instances ready to play? VG still has tons of potential, yet I fail to see how a game that makes you go in instances to battle and lags like crazy has any more potential than Vanguard. Also, sure when VG was released when it shoudk have been in beta, but at least those people didn't pay to beta test a console version of it! NOTE: Nothign is wrong with instances if they are worth it, yet in AOC they are NOT worth it.
Normally I wouldn't waste my time with anything VG related (since in the past i wasted way too much time on it in past posts) but sir you are very, very mistaken or somewhat dillusional. VG is like the midevil SWG NGE that we know now...its tasteless and boring. BUT!!! the old SWG (that the vets miss so much) was even a better game that VG ever was to begin with. You also said why wait 6 months for AOC to be fixed??? Dude you guys have waited what over a year and VG isnt still yet fully completed...AOC in 6 months will blow that sad game out of the water. Not only does it have one awesome franchise to work with (and a popular one too might i add) but it even got better reviews than VG, better sales at launch, and its not even slowing down. Besides technical bugs and fixes that need to be addressed, theres no sign of it dying anytime soon. Im playing it to have fun..not to worry about its features, like instancing because im a big supporter of instances, which to me means i can have a nice quiet time doing dungeon runs and quests with friends without having to worry about other players ruining the fun for us. So word to the wise..dont compare AOC to a game that sure has some players enjoying the game, but it will never come close to anything AOC has. As for graphics hahahaha ya...they are good for a 2002 graphics engine...I could run that game on my parents comp with no problems at all..and its nothing compared to what im running lol. But i guess thats just me...im someone who just plays to have fun..i dont care for what features a game has or doesnt have..if its fun, its fun...if not i just pick up and move on...im what gamers USED to be before everyone got all hyped up on all the technical crap and started whining about this game dont have this or that. a game of any genre is meant solely for our entertainment and pleasure of escaping the boring reality that we live in, the freedom of being a character that we only read in stories and comic books like we all did when we were little kids. Yeah back then gaming was so simple, pick up the controller or install that new game that we waited weeks for it to come out and just play till the wee hours in the morning before we realized we were late for school cuz we were so into getting to the next level. I dont pick at the one thing that has given me enjoyment since i was a kid, i just play. Have a great weekend everyone.

I find this whole VG >< AoC thread amusing and decpetive, because it is two games that suffer from nearly the same exact problems of being rushed out the door prematurely. VG players coming here to try to boost the image of their game by tearing down AoC is dishonest at best. VG is what it is regardless of how well AoC is doing.
Huge world to "explore", yeah right. I love the fact that VG isn't instanced, looks big without zone walls and gives a great feeling of an open world, but what is there to explore? Everything is neatly spelled out for you on the mini map. Every dungeon has its exact location marked with handly little tooltip information, quest objectives are the same, major towns, etc, etc. Exploring implies discovery and neither game offers it. The only difference is in one game you don't have load screens between following a preset path to the destination that is handed to you. I haven't gotten far enough in AoC to criticize it for lack of exploration, but VG doesn't really have much to "discover" except a few hidden quest givers here and there.
Diplomacy has been tabled after SOE admitted it needs a lot of work which it is not likely to ever get. Once you have a few cards diplomacy plays almost the exact same way every single time. Sure you can level it to 50 once you max your character level, but whats the point other that to gain more levels.
Crafting might be "deeper", but it is just more button clicking padded on top of typical MMO crafting. It isn't some hot selling point like the crafting in SWG was. Maybe for a small few who want more time between item creations I guess.
All this talk of VG being something you play long haul is silly. VGs development has effectively stopped. SOE is content letting it wither away. They don't promote the game like they do with their EQ sweethearts. There is likely to never be an expansion and I would bet the content if VG is almost the exact same in one year as it is now, save a few new overloand boss encounters.
As it stands right now VG is only a game to play if you are looking to fill a few months time before you see the credits scroll and the game ends. Lets face it, neither VG of AoC has enough content to offer much of a future once you play for a couple of months. The only difference is that AoC still has a chance to make enough to satisfy people in the long run. VG is already spent and the team slashed to maintenance mode already.
Not to say that I think the future is exceptional for AoC either. It sounds like funcom missed the mark from what I read, but I can't really say yet from experience.

It still doesn't change the fact that it's pretty obvious the design decisions in AOC were governed by the fact Funcom planned it around consoles, you just have to watch the pre release videos where Funcom show case AOC with that Funcom employee with a voice you just want to strangle. They openly admit in one of those videos the design choices for AOC were with current consoles mind. You just have to walk around zones to see the design of them ever inch of the way has been given the nod to cater to the console. Below is a link where Funcom got their idea for the combat system that so console in design.

Ya they sure can be Kenze ,you where hanging around the vanguard forums for over a year comparing it to every mmo that has ever been made I see its ok to compare vanguard to every mmo no matter how long its been out but god forbid anyone do the same to a game you like. I hate grape jelly but I like strawberry, don't try to change my mind, and don't call me a moron for it. I certainly don't expect everyone else to hate grape jelly and I won't try to convince you otherwise.
Some of the issue's are a matter of personal preference, and we all have different priorities when it comes to a game being enjoyable. Many of the arguments here are apples and oranges, so save your energy.
Performance issue's in the beginning are automatic so don't write off AOC for that. Lack of content is also a universal complaint at release.
Either you like intancing or you don't, no argument here.
Graphics seem to be a matter of opinion as well. In vanguard, the world seems to be more alive and vibrant with swaying trees and river current that actually sweeps you downstream, AOC character movement and combat seems to be better and the water and swimming is more realistic.
I like aspects of both games and don't like things about both games. Some things are more important than others. All of which are a matter of my opinion and shouldn't matter to anyone else.
I suggest that you all play what you like best because everything else is not as good.

Does being a console game somehow make something lesser? If it is a good MMO [for sake of discussion] then who cares if it was designed for consoles.
As far as I can tell Conan plays almost identical to most MMO mechanics minus auto attack.
I see its ok to compare vanguard to every mmo no matter how long its been out but god forbid anyone do the same to a game you like. Perfect example of a Hypocrite if ive ever seen one

Enough Already!!!! This argument is a joke.
HA HA! Very funny!
Just wait until the console gamers toss it aside like they do all console games eventually.
It was designed for consoles. Why anyone in a MMORPG forum would actively defend this un-holy thing is far beyond me.
I miss the good ol' days when nerds were actually intelligent.
