2 things bother me. - Loading screens betweens zones and tiers... Age of Warhammer? It kills things, like it or not. To LEAVE your world everytime you enter a long loading screen (say 20 seconds something). It's lazy programming, it should be avoided. Even if the zones are far from each other: include a boat trip or mount for 30 seconds but NOT DEAD loading screens for 20 seconds. The reactions to Age of Loading were very clear on this one. If you want to create a MMORPG world you do it like Wow or LOTRO (with even better DX10 graphics). - Already mentioned this a YEAR ago on the WH forums: the PvP fighting/animation is much too slow. It's like some 70 year olds are playing the game. And NO the slower the better is NOT good: if I want to see a GOOD football match I like to see the pros not the slow moving handicapped sports of a local competition. This is VERY important for a game based on PvP BTW. It killed the excellent RvR in DAoC when compared to basic Wow movement/fights. And over the last year it didn't improve an inch. The only things they added are the effects in the fights. So the animation is FAR from the "latest" polishments. It is the prime thing in PvP.
1) Only between Tiers, NOT the zones WITHIN the tiers. Also in the scenarios and probably some PvE stuff. That's it, no Age of Warhammer here.
2) Animations are one of the last things polished, I'm sure you've only looked at videos of Chaos Chosen with their giant 2h axes, lol. If you didn't notice, in your precious WoW, go play a warrior with a 2h wep and see how slow the animation is. Oh yeah, unless you spam Mortal Strike...that really takes skill.
-------------------------------------- A human and an Elf get captured by Skaven. The rat-men are getting ready to shoot the first hostage with Dwarf-made guns when he yells, "Earthquake!" The naturally nervous Skaven run and hide from the imaginary threat. He escapes. The Skaven regroup and bring out the Elf. Being very smart, the Elf has figured out what to do. When the Skaven get ready to shoot, the Elf, in order to scare them, yells, "Fire!"
Honestly this game will appeal to the WoW crowd that is bored of WoW. I could care less, and I'm in the beta. Game looks good, plays good, but the whole genre is pretty boring in my opinion. All MMOs have the same basic design, so in essence they all look and play the same. If you have played one MMO, you played them all. Fight, loot, level up, quests blah blah blah... I'd rather go outside in the sun or play D&D with real people lol. Enjoy more hours wasted in front of the computer lol.
MMO's are a great past time for winter. WAR should release just in time, after it's to cold to go to the beach, go out in the boat, ride the motorcycle, go for a ride with the top down on the convertible, etc.
I like sitting in front of the computer playing a fun game, when it's 40 degrees, cloudy and rainy outside.
Originally posted by kaydinv Those videos confirmed that this game is a WoW clone. Not trying to be a dick or anything but: the map/radar is in the top right portion of the screen, the player's energy bars are at the top left, the enemy's energy bar is right beside it to the right, the abilities are in a toolbar at the bottom center portion of the screen, and the chat window is on the bottom left...like WoW.
When the Chaos guy goes to destroy some building, he literally kneels down, a timer bar appears on the screen, fills to the right and then the building explodes. Minus the building exploding, this is just like WoW. The proportioning of the characters even looks identical. The aesthetics are like a slightly upgraded WoW.
The huge "TARGET IS DEAD" message that pops up on the screen makes this game seem like it is going to be even more easy mode than WoW is.
Sigh...I...I just don't know what to do anymore...
I guess you haven't played anything but WoW because everything you mentioned has been in MMOs before WoW. Shocker I know, WoW wasn't the first MMO in the world.
I'm glad every thread on this forum is filled with assumptuous pricks, like you. My first MMO was UO, back when UO and EQ fans still had a rivalry.
Well then you really haven't paid much attention to anything.
Not everything I mentioned is something that was done before WoW came out and you can't tell me that those videos don't remind you of WoW in almost every single aspect.
Lets break it down then so you can see the real picture:
"map/radar is in the top right portion"
Just picking a random game I remember that's before WoW or EQ2. Remember that crappy game Shadowbane? Even it had mini-maps.
"player's energy bars are at the top left" EQ1
"enemy's energy bar is right beside it to the right" EQ1
"the abilities are in a toolbar at the bottom center" EQ1
"chat window is on the bottom left" Oh, I don't know maybe just about ever MMO to date? DAoC, AO, EQ1, EQ2... a lot.
Why you seem to think the UI layout has anything to do with WoW doing something first is beyond me.
And of course the artwork from WoW looks like Warhammer, WoW has pretty much taken Warhammer's game wholesale. Go look at the Warhammer artwork from before blizzard even existed.

I like a familiar UI. I"m used to the standard UI, after playing EQ, EQ2, DAoC, CoH, WoW, beta for LoTRO and VAnguard and Shadowbane, and probably a few others.
I really dislike those animations, sounds, and special effects. The ground textures look really bad too, hopefully we get to see higher rez textures. I'm sure they will still fix it up more, but releasing that video with the ground like that, was a bad move.
I also dislike those target circles and think they should've been turned off for a presentation. Anyone else notice how far that orc flew back, when he got knocked back? That was strange and kind of bad.
The art looks amazing though, as do the models. Anyone know if Lighting was in?
Hmm, I admit this troubles me somewhat too. It is probably the only thing that I'm not 100% sure Mythic will pull off well on their own.
This feeling of directly controlling your avatar, like in an action game, was very important for WoW's success. I hope Mythic manages to do it well since the clunky controls and the feeling of "not being there" were the only reasons I never played DAoC seriously.
On the bright note, it seems that they are doing something in that regard. A few months ago a lot of reports from conventions emphasized the seeming unresponsiveness of controls and the disconcerting delay between pressing a key and something happening. However recent reports do not mention this at all anymore so I suppose that issue has been largely fixed.
EA has sunk enough money into this project already and imo if there are problems with the "tactile" part of the gameplay experience I'm sure they'll put in an extra buck to fix it. If Mythic, being RPG experts and all, don't have the knowledge or experience to fix the "action" part of their game (or rather their time can be better used on things only they can do well) I'm sure they'll use EAs money to hire some experts in that field and bring it up to par.... and from what I'm hearing recently that has probably already happened.
It is strange how suddenly people become video game critics off of a few minutes of video in a streaming format that doesn't give the game the credit it deserves.
People clammering over animations you won't even notice after the first 5 times of using the ability. The ground textures that you wont care about when enemies are infront of you. Targeting circles that can be turned off. The list goes on.
Bottom line is if you are looking for a High Rez super fancy head exploding graphics game then look elsewhere. The game is built for PvP and keeping animations, poly count, spell effects, etc at an accepptable level while maintaining the core aspect of the game is the most important factor. Do I care about animations? Sure to the extent that it looks like I cast a spell or swing my edged weapon. Passed that I could be swinging around a stuffed cat because I will be focusing on who to kill.
I guess I am the only one that finds those videos just fine. He swings an axe and it makes a noise...mission accomplished. The noise sounds like an axe hitting metal then A+ for the day. Spell sounds spell like so a big gold star. Spells look like spells so scratch and sniff sticker. You burn the building down and it not only catches on fire but people scream? Thats a cupcake!
but Holy crap the amount of pure BS people spew about graphics and animations is just hilarious. Yet you put an NES game infront of them and come back in 30 minutes and they will be playing that and not even notice you enetered the room. People are just looking for crap to nit pick; that in the end isn't the most important. Gameplay is everything and you can't say anything about that until you have played the game.
I think Mythic are going in the right direction with Warhammer and with their global launch, localized servers and (iirc) Chinese language edition the sales and subscriber figures are going to appear impressive at first, but I'm so sick of being let down I refuse to let myself buy the hype of the PR machine!

I think many here can agree that Mythic is doing what is needed to make this game work, but doing what is needed or doing slightly more than what is needed, if for no other reason but to improve the atmosphere is the diference between EQ2 and WoW..
We'll see the whole picture when it's out, but untill then, let the forum BS games continue!
Well I have read posts by more engineers on this forum regarding the look of this game than I ever thought possible. I have to agree with those who say gameplay is everything, the cavemen can go have their shiny trinkets in some other game. Staring at the skyline or the tree tops isn't going to be something I'll be doing often, so I'll take a cheesy backdrop and some great mechanics.
Enough people seem to like it. That is a good sign. But just judging from the videos I dont think this game will be for me. It looks like a pinball game to me tbh.
lol, I see what you mean. Will still try it out though.
Yes, Warhammer's leveling system does only go to 40, and while it may be fairly quick, the devs have stated the real game takes place at 40. Your reknown ranks go up to 80, so even if your a level 40 Goblin Shaman, you probably won't have the same tactics and the like of another shaman your level. Also, Keeps & Sieges, being able to go into King's Raids and City Raids(one of the highest forms of RVR), the top notch gear is not in the least bit easy to obtain, and many dungeons open up to you at level 40. Leveling up to 40 is a minor part of the game, though I'm not saying at all you should rush, endgame will be some of the most enjoyable points of the game.
Also, as far as the artistic aspects go, seeing as I'm tired of hearing this, Warhammer is completely different from Warcraft. I'm sure you've heard this millions of times, but the character design is coming strictly from the tabletop game, as well as the classes. It should be said that Warcraft looks like Warhammer; the converse to that statement is wrong.
With that said, I have played Warhammer at a convention, and from what my collective knowledge allows me to remember, the game is nowhere near slow-paced. Alot of people you see in these videos are not very confident in their skills, considering it is probably their first time playing, so they are only pressing one-two skills to use.
The game is looking great at this point, and I'd say almost all followers of the game thus far will not be dissapointed with the final product.

Can you explain to me why you have such a huge problem with the fact that WAR looks like WoW?
Warcraft looks like Warhammer = Warhammer looks like Warcraft
It doesen't matter if you play tabletop from the 80's but this game called Warhammer Online; Age of Reckoning looks alot like that other game World of Warcraft, now why does that bother you so much?

There is stigma that goes along with WoW now. Meaning that if it looks like Warcraft that is bad.
With that being said WAR looks nothing like WoW. Anyone drawing a conclusion otherwise needs to visit an eye doctor. Characters have better proportions, things are much more detailed, the color palatte is different.
Honestly it is like comparing a truck to a minivan. They got wheels, doors, tires, and similar color paint. They look the same!

Lol seriously don't care if WAR looks like wow.
The fact is WoW PVP sucks. 4 BGs + arena. I just play to PvP so as long as it's better that's all that counts.
Furthermore, they are adding oceanic based servers, so no more freaking 3-400+ms ping times for Aus/Nz players. That alone makes me support WAR over wow who has basically renamed oceanic realms and changed the clock time with similar lag issues. This ping issue have really limited PvP in wow for oceanic players.
I would play a wow clone with:
1) better pvp options
2) city sieges/ world pvp
3) more BGs
4) pvp balancing vs pve balancing
5) PvP with a purpose
6) Oceanic based servers for better latency
7) massive PvP combat
..... oh wait that's not a clone anymore! nm....
So far that's what the genre has been missing ever since daoc. wow was never a pvp game, it was built around pve with pvp as a very remote afterthought. Seriously 4 BGs and arena since release. For a game that big... now that's a remote afterthought f you.
Most of my Au/Nz friends and guildies are also moving just cos of the oceanic servers. nuff said. hopefully it's a good game
While I agree that gameplay > graphics, I still think WAR should look a lot better considering it is coming out 2008/2009 and not 2000. It is actually not much of an improvement over DAOC if you ask me. You might say that it is ok because it has such an "awesome gameplay", but you have to remember that the masses judge any product very superficially, How it looks is a big factor.
Yea because how it looks and not how it plays is doing wonders for a recently released MMO right?

First of all, I see nothing similar between Warcraft's and Warhammer's universe. The comical orcs of Warcraft look nothing like the fungal beasts who live just for war in Warhammer. I just get sick of hearing the statement one looks like another; these are people who've never seen the Warhammer universe before this game, I suppose.
Even then, if that is said, I guess World of Warcraft copied Everquest in some visual aspects; and Everquest 2 copied Dark Age of Camelot, and Dark Age of Camelot copied Ultima Online, which of course copied Lineage.
It's pointless, as you can see, to say one game copied another because the truth of the matter is, all developers borrow something they see in another game from time to time; it's inevitable.
And Warhammer existed around a good 2 decades before Warcraft was even thought of; Warcraft should be considered a spin-off of Warhammer's style.

I agree with everything you just said except the orcs bit...
It is the Warhammer greenskins that are comical in an over-the-top brutal way. They're basically a parody of english football hooligans and that's what makes them so cool to me. ("Da Boyz" lol!)
It is the WoW orcs that are so "serious" and therefore meh.. Misunderstood ugly tribesmen? Who cares? Gimme WAAAAGH!

I understand the orcs are funny, but that's just because of their carefree look on life. They are very simplistic in how their thinking process goes... but it's golden stuff. I love Warhammer orcs.
I'm talking art style-wise. The orcs are drawn in a comical way in Warcraft, but are far different in Warhammer.
