This is a sad day.  He was one of the finest of his kind- great comic, great writer.  Of the many people I've always hoped to see in person, he was one.  He made me think, everytime I listened to him.  He will definitely be missed.

Yea I just saw this too, what a huge shame. He was one of the best comedians ever. One of his recent shows on HBO, "Life is Worth Losing", is one of the funniest comedy shows I've ever watched. Damn, he will be missed by millions of people.

    WHY GODDAMNIT, WHY???

It is the nature of things.

Carlin would be the first to tell you.

    The seven dirty words...classic.

I was fortunate enough to see him live when I was in college.

A great observer of the world.  Much more incisive than say...Tim Russert, who was all about sucking up to power, while Carlin had no use for it.

CH, Jedi, Commando, Smuggler, BH, Scout, Doctor, Chef, BE...yeah, lots of SWG time invested.

ugh... why couldnt it be Dane Cook?

There are 3 types of people in the world.
1.) Those who make things happen
2.) Those who watch things happen
3.) And those who wonder "What the %#*& just happened?!"

He had a heartattack . I only wish you would have a smartattack but thats not going to happen.

it wasnt an OD, but i think it had something to do with drugs. It doesnt make his jokes any less funnier, but it is disapointing.

"Overall idiot"? Are you serious or just trolling? I would LOVE to hear this explanation!

    1. an utterly foolish or senseless person.

He fits the definition quite well. Please, offer, in your grand expertise, why he was such a genious genius (yup, keltic1701 picked that one out. He's such a smart guy!).

edit: To add, just because he was liked by you, doesn't mean he was liked by everyone. I am sure many on this board will like him, but most are liberals and were attracted to the bashing he performed on a daily basis.

First of all Einstein the word is spelled  g-e-n-i-u-s. Second since you are asking a question you usually end your sentence with one of these (?). Third, if you actually saw him in interviews and read his books you would soon see just how much of a genius he really was by pointing the absurdity of  society and the people who live in it (including himself) and not slap the dreaded "liberal" label just because he liked to jokingly poke his finger in the eyes of conformists. So who really is the idiot here? I'll lay odds it wasn't Carlin!!

I heard on the radio today. Damn shame.

He had intelligent humor, unlike most comedians now who only can think of gay and "your mom" jokes.

Oh noes! The Internet spelling and grammar police! Oh please forgive me for misspelling a single word and forgetting punctuation on an unofficial gaming forum!

And yes, I did read some of his books. My least favorite pile of crap being When Will Jesus Bring the Pork Chops.

As I said, some like him, some don't.

In the George Carling style, He was shit out of luck, jolly well fucked and well, Fuck you all for the hell of it! All with that classic grin! Really did love his style!

  • George Carlin is one of the few comics that my parents and I can both watch and laugh at the same things. Normally our humor is not even in the same planet, but we all equally enjoyed him which makes it all the sadder to me.

Although, Carlin himself would probably not want people to be sad about his passing, so instead I shall simply wish him well. So long you ornery bastard, and I hope they don't bury you in your Mr. Conductor outfit.

There is great irony in this post, although Jrod probably doesn't realize it.

Carlin back in the  70's was widely denounced by his "seniors" in comedy, mainly because of language.  As in the Seven Dirty Words.

Carlin took those seven words (well, as Carlin once observed, six and a half dirty words) and used them in part to rob them of their shock value, and thus much of their power.

So Carlin's humor might have been intelligent, but it shocked and offended many.  The shock and offense had much more powerful effect on the much of the audience than the intelligence behind the routine.

Carlin also pioneered the absurdity of much of everyday life genre of comedy which was further refined by guys like Jerry Seinfeld, and is a pretty common theme in a lot of standup today.
