Funny Xfire Player Tracking peaked at little over 17K. Today it reported just over 9K of members playing.
That a 41% decrease. Since there was no free trial.....

I think the poll I linked has clearly proved this (your sentence in red....)
DB
Denial makes one look a lot dumber than he/she actually is.
This game has great potential. Pity, after 4 weeks of play, I cant play for more than 2 hours before I have to reboot the game.
Pity , after 4 weeks of play, ever week there are two patches that add new game-play bugs to replace the ones they just fixes.
Pity, after 4 weeks of play, I creep closer to the point where the PvE content becomes more of a grindfest - I could be play a free-to-play Asian mmorg for that.
Pity, after 4 weeks of play, I see patch fixes that are design to slow me down from leveling after so many with more time on their hands managed to get to 80 levels of play to reach the end game content - which isn't there!
And this is why people are leaving this game in drove at the moment.
My criticism is of Funcom's premature release of an unfinished game - yet again (I played Anarchy Online too when it came out) - not the potential of AoC.
How can anyone release a game that can not get its game engine working properly nor its class balance even remotely in order day one?
This game needed 3 months more work without bleeding the player-base of its cash. The overall class balance is terrible atm, both in PvP and PvE - and I played DAoC. Most of these issues should have been ironed out in beta.
So far this is 0 for 2 for Funcom mmorgs - both of which could have been so so much fun. Might check it out in 12 months.
I'm still waiting to see what Funcom will accomplish with AO, although it's understandably a low developing priority at the moment. For me it was the best sci-fi MMO that kept me hooked for years and still would if they could keep it up to date (EVE was not in the radar back then and SWG felt restricted, empty and grindy at tthe time - that's my opinion of course and I'm entitled to it, thank you).

You have seen the screenshots of AO with to dreamworld2 ported graphics ? Thats the future of it
Those who call them failcom or fu**com havent done their homework. Funcom said it multiple times when pushing back AoC. At the beginning the game was designed to be of low(er) quality. They did push it back to flesh it out. It was never ment to be a triple-A when development started.
They also have Sercet World in the queue. Those who took part in the early teaser might probably understand what Funcom is capable of regarding deep gaming
I've changed my opinion, luckily just in time for sub day. I will not be renewing afterall, not because of the bugs and such, all mmo's have this it's the nature of the beast. I just don't trust Funcom to be able to remedy the situation.
I am one of those people who are more than happy pay subs while the game is being improved and problems are ironed out but in this case I just don't see that as very likely. I hope they prove me wrong as I enjoyed the game on the whole but, from my experience so far with the patches,I just feel things will in fact most likely get worse with time.
----- The person who is certain, and who claims divine warrant for his certainty, belongs now to the infancy of our species.
What makes you think that AoC was never meant to be a AAA MMO?
I wont dig for the links and movies to interviews. It was said by Gaute and one or two other Funcom people after the last push back of release. They initially aimed for a lower quality product. Then they recognized that a shitload of people signed for beta and showed interest on boards like mmorpg.com and decided to flesh it out as much as possible.
Dont let you fool by the graphics. Its the same efford to create AoC graphics as to create WoW graphics. Its only a design decission, not a quality decission. In theory funcom could have decided to tweak their render engine to use a cell shader. The same 3D data would look catoonish. Not like WoW, but like the conan comics or anime. Its almost the same efford for a texture artist to create a nemedian chain armor then it is to create a WoW leather armor.
Nowadays the 3D software tools are very advanced. Everyone can create top notch visuals.
The quality of a game is rather the quality of quantity. AoC has a very narrow set of features, which is its heritage from the basic, extremely functional gameplay design. They wasted zero time into anything that isnt progression and endgame related. In UO you can grow flowers, in EQ2 you can earn the title of a lore master, in WoW a hunter can tame any animal and has to feed it. Those features are worthless for your progression but the stuff "quality of quantity" is made of. The stuff of an AAA title that is able to keep you busy and entertained months after you reached cap. EQ2 did it so well that qute a few players only play the fluff and level with the exp from it. Or others really do very old grey quests for house items. 95% of all carpenter recipes in EQ2 are for "useless" furniture. For a real AAA title it is a must do support a gazillion of playstyles and activities. D&L *shudder* promised paragliding and snowboarding and i wonder when a new game will take those ideas and implement them. An AAA title nowadays cant be only perfect combat, class balance and itemization. It has to be a little bit of a amusement park. Doesnt matter if its a childish theme or a mature theme park.

My dream is that Funcom , SOE/sony, Blizzard etc., the artifactial destroyers of the mmorpg genre will be gone , go bankrupt or anything like that.
Unfortunately, this isn't gonna happen and it is gonna be the opposite.
The future doesn't look bright SOE, funcom, blizzard creating games for the masses, other companies copy the working formula, if one company ( Funcom) now succeeds selling a game that is not complete and buggy and not feature complete sells well and gains enough subscribtions to be successful then the mmorpg genre is further doomed.
Smaller companies , the real gamers , the real peace creators who create SERIOUS GAMES WITH PASSION mostly do not have the profit and ony a few succeed but unfortunately, those who succeed are niche which is fine but not fine as a indristualist because the market will not change because those niches keep being niche and will not cry to the masses that there is somethng different.

What the hell are you going on about "real gamers"? Who's a "real gamer" by your definition here? What the hell is a "serious game with passion"? You're in quite the contradiction here, mate. First you say that mass appeal is killing the genre and then you say that indie games need to un-niche themselves and "cry to the masses that there is something different". So, mass appeal sucks, but it's the only thing that can save the genre.
You're just deluding yourself, man. Even "niche" games are bloody massive. 50,000 subscriptions is quite a lot of people if you consider the number by itself. Sure, if you refer to WoW, then it's but a grain of sand, but we're talking people here, your "real gamers", not just a statistic. Those 50,000 people are shaping the genre as much as the 9 million, just by playing their game and expressing their opinion in forums like these and so on. In any case it's not too adventurous to say that people want accessibility and familiarity. If they were so avid for "difference" then the most populated games should be City of Heroes, EVE, Pirates of the Burning Sea, Planetside, and whatever, regardless of their particular flaws. Instead, it's WoW, it's EQ, it's gonna be WAR, and to some extent, it's Conan. Why? Beats me, but they're the games that have been associated with familiar themes, familiar gameplay mechanics, etc. Therefore, they're not killing the genre. They're keeping it stable so your "indie developers" can conjure up crap like Dark and Light and still have crazed followers. They're necessary. And they're not a necessary evil. They're quite fine, if you ask me.
So instead of limiting yourself to whining, go do something about it. Or think that, actually, MMOs take quite a lot of time to change, unlike single player games. And hell, even single player games are still going on the same basics as always, and that's the point of the category "genre". There's basics to each and every one, and "MMO" is definitely a genre.
Think before you cry doom, mate.
Anyway, I've subbed up for 3 more months of play. I'm having a blast even though I'm still in Tortage!
I did have fun in this game so I'm not sorry I bought it but this game definitely isn't finished.
My main is a necro and it has been a rollar coaster ride these last few patches. Classes just shouldn't be changed and broken this much a month after release.
Maybe I'll try this game again in a few months if things straighten out. Right now it's too much like playing beta.
I've been gone a couple of days, glad to see this post evolved into something, and gave a sample (however skewed) of re-ups.
I for one am glad they did release the game when they did - even if it feels unfinished - even if you question how quickly they are improving (or destroying ) - rather than having nothing at all new to look forward to over the summer. The fall release line up is getting so crowded, it would have been financial suicide to push it back farther..

It is these kind of posts I just don't get, obviously the poster has no real clue how businesses operate. Punished? They are probably pretty happy with sales so far, and a 50% re-sub rate is nothing to scoff at. (yes -that is an educated estimate.) Look at the game dynasties they are ranking along side in sales and play time. What I wonder - did they somehow leech the soul of your first born for playing the game?? I noticed several similar posts earlier on , but none were worth responding to, just so happens this one was last.
I am curious to hear what would make those on the fence and waiting to renew - do it? What will it take to nail down a committed player base as WAR, Aion, TCOS, and WoTlK all come down the pipe... THAT IS A LOT OF COMPETITION!
Glad I can just sit back and enjoy AoC for awhile... hopefully my first born will be safe!

They leech on the MMORPG soul when releasing unfinished products like AoC. Overhype first for lots of preorders, then act like clams with intact NDA cause they knew if lifted it would have lowered their preorders. Just look at the so called open beta where people could play the most finished areas and rest was a secret cause it just wasnt finished.
Thats how thiefs and other lowlife acts. Funcom is greedy thiefs and is getting punished by people bailing out, which is a good thing, but the damage is already done. Developers like Funcom is whats hurting this genre.
not renewing, in fact anyone wants a free gamecard? mail me and you have it ,either here or to cyricson@yahoo.com. thnx for helping me getting rid of it.
I was a pretty big fan of this game through beta and even through most of my 30 days post launch. With that said, FC has lost my respect recently and completely. i will not go into details because the game itself is great imo... I just refuse to support a company that kicks me in the teeth repeatedly.
My sub ran out on the 26th.
I wish you all the best, and AoC as well.. perhaps someday the sting will pass and i might take another look at this game, but not for a long time.
For all you people quitting who is on the Omm server feel free to send me all your ingame money! This way I can verify to the masses that you actually quit! Sounds fair to me!

Anyway, I've subbed up for 3 more months of play. I'm having a blast even though I'm still in Tortage!
I wouldnt give those thiefs at Funcom a second more of my life. They is being punished now for there greed which serves them just right.

I'm not renewing.
