While I think his analogy is entirely lame, it would mean his restaurant is meant to serve a fine dining meal of steak and wine. Yet, steak is in a patch coming this summer and wine hasn't been implemented yet with no target date yet released.
When they get around to finishing the game and putting in all the things they promise on the game box (DX 10), then maybe he can flap his gums about the quality of his MMO meal.
Until that time there are a lot of people looking for the toy that is supposed to come in their happy meal.
Mr Godadger, Wine becomes good wine when it is ready,
just like a good game is a game which is ready.
Well good thing i dont mind a wine thats only been in the cellar for 2 - 5 years =P
Naturally, you can always sweeten a young wine and make it palatable. Of course...that would lead us to wonder where the sweet n' low was when they decided to launch. How silly of me to forget, they used it all on the first sampling....in Tortage. You know, in looking back...I think it might have been in their best interests to actually leave Tortage a little more lacking and make the rest of their game a tad more sweet.
Even better, they could have simply waited for the next shipment of sweet n' low to come in. Granted, that would have lost them initial sales. It would have given them time to fully correct some drier tastes later on and secure them as the "pretty and awesome" kingpins. I suppose we can only blame ourselves, and sharp tongued investors in suits, for the need to make such high initial sales. I think it hurt them, though, in the long run. MMO players do not often look backwards...only forward. It is a harsh reality of this industry.
"But you know... I'm going to be a bit cheeky now, but if you've been to McDonald's for four or five years, and had your burger and your Coke, sometimes it's great to just have a great steak and a glass of good wine. "I think that's what we're trying to do. It's more expensive, it's not for everyone and perhaps it's not as easily accessible as WOW is. But it could be more meaty," Godager finished.

This thread is replete with irony.

This whole AoC release boggles my mind on many levels. Its just crazy on many levels. I can't tell whether some of this stuff is crazy or deceptive or a bit of both. Does Gaute really think he is making Vanguard or something.
I mean I disagree with the Vanguard type people about that style of MMO being rich and stuff. But at least they had sane or arguable points. AoC though has nothing of the sort and most of the features that can even vaguely be called "high end" or "rich/deep" are crap, barely work, or not in at all.
I think Funcom is run by the kind of bulls**tter that believe their own bulls**t. I have worked for a a couple people like that. They are perplexing because they appear insane when you try to put all the pieces together. Yet there is also a method to their madness that tends to really really sucker people who tend to not be skeptical at first blush. In other words if you do not do the "trust but verify" or just plain skepticism. Yo utend to bleieve them because they do not give off the normal signs of lying.
Yet when you go over all the facts at a later date you know they were lying but they will swear up and down that they were not and as far as you can tell they bleieve it. Yet at other times they are clearly pruposely coloring the truth and and even admit such a thing.
Fortunately I have seen people like this in real life and knew the objective signs from the get go. But its still mind boggling when you see it. Especially a company that has the sort of "drink the kool-aid" culture of this sort of stuff.
The sad things many people get burned by this sort of unconscious con man. They are strange because they are not fully predatory like a conscious con man. But they tend to really really cause certain sorts of people to get burned very badly.
Also did you notice the photo they posted for the interview...he's putting the eeevil finger like "im badass, I made the wow killer" Please man i mean somebody should enmark that photo and hand it to him and say: "here, now get the f**k off our company". I swear just the photo really really annoyed me. When you make such a disgraceful piece of trash you are not allowed to pose like that...it's just WRONG.

Yeah, I thought the exact same thing. You can see the smug arrogance, "I sold you a pack of lies and you fell for it", makes me want to smack him in the face with a copy of the CE edition.
Gaute is a loser and always has been anything he touches turns to garbage and hes heading to the secret world next to continue his career of shame. Thats of course if funcom is still in existence in the near future. I have always wanted to know why the f*** don't they fire his incompetent ass?
You'll take what I give you, when I give it to you.. and while your at it, would you mind getting your fake tits off my damned counter! Now get out of my face and go sit the frack down!
Gotta love Gordon.
AoC really is like Hells Kitchen atm tho.. when they deliver, its the best you've ever had.. when they frak up... well... its today.
WoW is the McDonald's of MMO games. McDies isn't that bad really. It's not good for you, but it's not horrible horrible food either. Think the fries, mmmmm, the fries are great, but the food is what it is: fast food.
McDonald's also has something WoW does not. Real competition(well, it does but, oh you can figure out what I mean).
McDonald's has Burger King, Wendy's, Subway, Chik-a-something, and other well known fast food places. What game choices have you if you decide you don't want a Bog Mac((WoW)also, the typo is how I feel about the Mac)? EQ2? COH? AOC?
When people say WoW is the McDonald's of MMO games, they are really praising WoW. McDonald's is extremly popular, doing very well as a business, and has a large group of dedicated customers. The food, as i said before, is what it is: fast food.
Ever notice if one of McDies competors comes up with a new burger, to stay ahead, McDies comes up with the same item only just a little different?
Now, what do i think of AOC?
Crack cocaine.
Some are addicted to it and defend it beyond belief, but just dont seem able to stop using it. They can see it's bad. They can see it's not the best. It has them in it's grip.
Will it always be like this?
Nah, it'll just take FunCom time to turn this bad drug into something more pleasing to the palate. Eventually, AOC will become that little fish-n-chip place people enjoy and gave a second chance, but won't ever be as big as McDonald's.
This opinion on Godager's comment taken from wowinsider.com. Obviously a pretty biased site but still seemed somehow apt to me...
Apparently Age of Conan is supposed to be that steak, and our little critically acclaimed and history-making game is supposed to be the culinary equivalent of McDonald's. Which isn't a bad comparison -- we can definitely see Age of Conan being called "steak." Especially sinceit wasserved so undercooked.
Food anologies,eh? Ok. WoW is the McDonald's of MMO games. McDies isn't that bad really. It's not good for you, but it's not horrible horrible food either. Speaking of McDonald's, did I hear correctly that they are the official restaurant of the Beijing olympics?
Nothing more appropriate than an organization supposedly celebrating physical activity (albeit in an unpalatably elitist way) endorsing a fast food chain with such a shoddy nutritional track record...
And I sure as hell hope AoC doesn't turn into a WoW. I never played the Blizzard game, but the artwork alone has been enough to convince me to stay away. Besides, here it's Conan. I might object to the treatment of women in the game, but Funcom will have to remain faithful to the original material if the franchise tie is to be of any use to the selling of the game.
You walk into an AOC eating establishment and your group orders a whole blackberry pie. When the pie is served it looks great. So you and your friends each take a slice, and you take a bite. The first bite tastes rotten. You sniff it and it smells spoiled.
For Gods sake don't order the Funcom chocolate pie special, mine had little chunks of corn it it

<< And I sure as hell hope AoC doesn't turn into a WoW. >>
One of AoC's problems is that they absolutely did try to make it another WoW (but with nipples, cursing and a new melee system). They should have tried something radical like "removing the need to kill critters to get to endgame" or somesuch. Most of the games that have tried completely different things haven't done very well so far (PotC, DnD, Eve, SB) but I think that's just because they didn't hit the lucky feature set that we really want and because of a lack of capital.
Trying to take on WoW headon, feature-vs-feature, content-vs-content is dumb at this point. Wow pulls in more in one month than most companies have to build an entire game with and Blizzard is putting a good chunk of that right back into their game. It's more like trying to compete with Amazon or Ebay than McDonald's, which actually doesn't produce anything that can't be beaten easily with homemade or at a slightly pricier restaurant.
I just wonder if you missed the point intentionally or not ...
The way you taken it: mcdonald is crap ==> steak+wine is great wow sux ==> AoC great
The way it was meant (imo): you are used to wow standard gameplay ==> AoC has new and unique features (which may be difficult to adapt to at first)
But well your posts are still funny
I would consider that you don't know better. Unique features. Lol!
UO, EVE and DAOC where like restaurants that where unique, well cooked and you never forget the good restaurant and good service.
WOW is a big restaurant like MCdonalds that has allot of customers and people and it is very popular. Still, it isn't rotten but it did damaged allot of other restaurants by preventing them to be successfull. Most restaurants failed due to the big restaurant WOW.
AOC is trying to create a restaurant but has very services and there food is very bad cooked and what people serve is mostly not what they get aka, some food is missing or some food just doesn't excist but it is listed on the menu card. Despite having terrible food and service, it still has plenty of people . This damaged the total restaurant industry. Now more and more restaurants can just sell cheap food to customers that aren't even well cooked and served. They just can grab money from poor customers who just buy that ridiculous cheap food that is rotten inside and kills the quality.
It is the duty of those few restaurants ( EVE and others) to keep the quality alive in this market.
Conclusion: AOC is a WOW/EQ clone that is 100% exact the same but just more dumber then the original games and has less quality and less content to offer then WOW and EQ and of course more buggy and less polished then WOW and EQ.
It only has some extra twitchs like the combat system and better graphics. That's it.

Yes, AoC layed siege on the gates of Orgrimmar.
Unfortunately the entire siege force was rolled by the two guards out front.
STOP WHINING!
AoC is just like the big fancy steak dinner.
When your food arrives all you see is a raw steak medallion a roasted potato cube and a big empty plate. So you keep shelling out for a la' carte.
Or just say screw this and head to McDonald's on the way home to eat something filling.
QFT!
Thats right and its also true for most of the topics here... its sad
