Im in vanguard, i wouldnt say im hardcore however id say the game is pretty tough.

Id say the folks over in L2 are a bit hardcore, getting started in that game is tough though, and lvling is a grind, but the pvp is simply amazing.

FFXI is more hardcore as well, pretty decent game but it takes alot of time, not casual friendly at all.

Eve's a nice choice to, supports casual and hardcore players.

    I saved the princess.

Trammies need to stop polluting the MMORPG landscape. They already have enough games in which to emote hugs and sell garbage by the banks.

they are playing more than one game.

Yup, I saved the princess, watched the credits, game over.

Just waiting on the next sandbox to kick all the kids out of, then after months of incessant complaining to GM's, they'll get me and my kind kicked out, then the game will cease to exist on any meaningful level. Please reference Ultima Online.

I don't know what YOUR definition of Hardcore is with MMORPG, i must say that the HARDCORE i read people use on forums like this is in my view  far from being hardcore in a MMORPG, as most people somehow think that grinding to cap lvl asap is hardcore?, also people seem to believe the more time someone spends a day in a game the more hardcore he or she is. We even have people who THINK that being a pvp player means hardcore, where hardcore with a MMORPG has a complete different meaning then i see being used which is more single player type of hardcore of regular FPS type of hardcore.

Hardcore in MMORPG is something that mostly the niche in this genre are able to play, meaning people who might devote themselfs into the games economy, people who make guides and overall are helpfull towards the ingame community, people that truly know the ins and outs of the game(world) People that show respect even in defeat, those are the type of hardcore in MMORPG in my view.

But please keep in mind that this is my personal view on HARDCORE and this does not make it a FACT for each and every person, others might agree or disagree on it as it's just a opinion i wanted to share

So instead of asking where did all the hardcore player go please explain what YOU see as being hardcore. Maybe some could asnwer your OP better that way, as i am sure i am not the only one that might see Hardcore in a MMORPG different then what we see it being on forums like this.

There are different lvls of hardcore,

    Play 24/7 can be hardcore

Grind for months in instance 24/7 can be hardcore

When time comes and you play Darkfall will also give new meaning to hardcore it will be ultimate hardcore defenition.

When Darkfall is launched new Defenition of harcore = Playing Darkfall:)

Errm ... wait, Hardcore ? Come on, what exactly is "hardcore" ?

To me, hardcore means challenge. Challenge means, you have a number of tools, and you have to use them wisely - or you die. Thats hardcore to me.

Hardcore, thats raiding in Vanguard, for example. Thats really done well. Every class is useful, a lot of them are even like absolutely required, plus - one error, and you're wiped again, and every mob is different, and the mob abilities are really drastic, so beware what you're doing !

Hardcore is however NOT Lineage 2, or EQ1, or FF, just because you need to spend a lot of TIME for these games.  IMHO there shouldnt be an "endgame". You play the game, you level up. After 10 years of playing, OK, you might finally hit the maximum level. There has to be some kind of maximum level, right. But that shouldnt be the game, to first reach the maximum level and then start really playing, like its in WoW and many other MMOs today. The playing itself should be the game itself.

So, in the sum, my ideal game would be a game with "infinite" leveling and really diverse opponents and a complex class system. Vanguard would be close to that except you level much too fast, in comparison to the content thats there, and the only time mobs really vary a lot is probably in raids. :(

Its because no current MMO offers a hardcore gameplay. So you cant be hardcore with todays standard.

The only thing you can do.....is to put in alot of time. And that alone dont generate a "hardcore" player.

Ohh.....and that bit about players growing up is also true : )

Hardcore players are waiting for something good.

We've played all the crap thats been released in the last 5yrs, and are still waiting.

Also this poor launch thing is something new IMO, older games had bugs sure, but were at least complete

at release to a playable standard  - nm, if i keep going this will end up a massive block of text.

Does anyone know how to make a mmoRPG anymore?

  • AdamantineAdamantine Member RarePosts: 5,094

Ok, as you all just want to bathe in your dreams of elitism, I give examples of players I met that I considered hardcore.

    - A Destroyer I partied with in Lineage 2. The whole party except him had already wiped, and quickly. Then he wiped the mobs. Badass !

    - A Tyrant I met in the same game, in a PvP battle. I could hardly blink - and was already dead ! I didnt even had the time to hit my little Ultimate Defense on my Bladedancer.

    - A Spellhowler I partied with in the same game. Man the guy wiped full rooms of the toughest mobs. He had like infinite mana, too, though, as I was on my Shillien Elder.

    - And the anti-hardcore: some loser (a clueless Playerkiller with a red name) on one of these super high xp freeshards asked me, then on a NECROMANCER, for BUFFS !  And when I rejected that, HE TRIED TO KILL ME ! Well I certainly "buffed" him afterwards (Necromancer is the debuff specialist of Lineage 2).

There's no reason to be hardcore when everything is a gear grind and there is nothing to stay ahead of the curve of because the next expansion practically wipes the slate clean.
