"hardcore" is a word used by 14 year olds in place of "unwashed and unemployed" most of us have other things to do than play with internet spaceships 23/7
I imagine the guilds who kill the bosses in the latest dungeon in WoW consider themselves pretty hardcore.
I don't think so. I play WoW casually, but I know and have talked with most of the people in the farthest-along raiding guild in my server. They're all pretty grounded and have a good sense of humor. I have a bunch of them on my friends list, so I see when they're online. They don't really play for huge amounts of time, either. I've only heard one of them call themselves "hardcore". He happens to be the only one in that guild that is an outspoken prick.
Usually, the ones that consider themselves "hardcore" are the ones that ruin such guilds because they're more into it for reputation and gear than simply doing something fun as a team, win or lose. The third highest-guild (at the time) on my server was like that, especially the leadership. I used to be friends with a few of the members of that guild. Every time they talked to me, since I was a neutral party, almost all of them confided in me how the experience was growing more and more sour, since the leadership just continually bitched about the guild not being far enough along or people wanting to play a different spec. The entire thing has disbanded now, and pretty much everybody has left. They didn't just scatter to other guilds. Most of them have outright left the game.
You want a good example of what the "hardcore" crowd does to a guild? Look at Death and Taxes. Read the postmortem written by their GM.
In my eyes, the word hardcore, and all that comes with it in the MMO space, is little more than a means of boosting self-esteem for a tiny sect of gamers. In pretty much every game out there, casuals can be successful at something or the other, if they play smart. That includes games like old Vanguard, old SWG, and EVE. The "hardcore" just like to build a myth that casuals are the stupid element of a game that cause everything to be watered-down.
You cant be hardcore when a game is based on stats ie any and every mmo to date and in development. Hard-core is skill based ie fps games games that take atleast some skill.. example playing CS: 16 on 16 and taking out the whole team with a knife.. thats hardcore or you hax one of the two.
Aha.
Therefore, Chess takes no skill, as you dont need good reflexes for it ?
It seems to me recently in all the game Ive been playing it is damn near impossible to find other hardcore gamers. Its seems more and more people are becomeing casual gamers which saddens me
Most true hardcore waiting for Darkfall:)
Games played:AC1-Darktide'99-2000-AC2-Darktide/dawnsong2003-2005,Lineage2-2005-2006 and now Darkfall-2009..... In between WoW few months AoC few months and some f2p also all very short few weeks.

Hardcore must be another word for moron, then. You know, enough is really enough. It is beyond a maybe. There is zero possibility of this game ever seeing the light of day. I don't usually get involved with this kind of thing, but it's starting to get ridiculous. It's like a damn cult.
ooo, why is everyone so excited about Darkfall? I saw a game play Vid and I couldn't see any WOW factor in it lol.
PS: I was interested in it as well. Wanted to play it, after seeing the game play video I changed my mind. Goodluck to all those who are waiting so long for it. Hope you get the chance to play it lol.
I'm not excited about Darkfall either. Be it released or not, Darkfall looks like a conceptionless chaos to me. No classes, full PvP, full looting, weak itemization - whatever you ask for, they always choose the easier route. So thats the future of MMOs or what ? Meh.
