Well for one thing, about EA, pretty much without them during the dull years early on in gaming the landscape would look VERY different today, whether better or not that's up to someone else to decide. EA has published some stellar games and if we are going to be upset with them for churning out sequels, ummmm very few development houses do NOT churn out sequel after sequel. FFS Final Fantasy is on 13 with knock-offs galore. Hell Blizzard, in 15 years, has only made what 5 games? Lost Vikings, Diablo, Warcraft , Starcraft and WoW. What has BioWare done in that time? KotOR, Baldur's Gate, Jade Empire, Mass Effect, MDK, NWN, and Shattered Steel. Not even talking about the 5 or 6 games still coming 2 of which will hit this year/early next year (Sonic Dark Chronicles and Dragon Age Origins). EA has had some false starts as far as mmo's are concerned, will give them that. However, they are the first company to publish the first financially successful MMO. And for all the naysayers that are out there claiming EA is only in it for the money etc etc etc. They do give a rat's ass about the gamers. UO is a perfect example of this. When Trammel fugged up UO what did EA do? They opened pre-Trammel servers. When UO2 was almost done what did they do? Cancel it because they did not want to alienate their current subscriber base (which, btw for the SOE fanboys is still larger after 9 years than SWG today) in order to chase after that mythical number that may or may not have come into that game. As far as Warhammer is concerned, if you honestly think that EA is behind the recent cuts then you really have the attention span of a squirrel. Were it the big EVIL EA then don't you think they would pull the same bs that everyone else (blizzard, funcom, and soe) does? Mythic have already stated that if they need to they will delay Warhammer again and once the NDA is lifted you will all see why some people are quick to defend the game. The crew that BioWare has working on this game are the *original* devs from SWG. Not the hacks behind the CU and the NGE, they are off working on some space shooter game, but the group that brought us the SWG that we all loved so much. That talent with a clear vision of where the game will go cannot be a bad thing. Will it be a game world or a game we don't know. We do know for a fact that BioWare have stated that this will be something new in the mmo space. It will be a story driven experience. Now, its been a few years since I played KotOR but I distinctly remember that being skill based moreso than mass effect. KotOR 2 wasn't BioWare. I suspect that once Dragon Age is released there will be a flood of information coming out about the MMO. BioWare aren't ones to hype the next thing before the current thing is released. I am sure all will be made clear within the year.
Yeah.... Lets see what I remember from UO...
I don't remember EA opening any "Pre-Trammel" servers for UO after Trammel came out. There was Siege Perilous but that was opened long before Trammel came out. And it was made to be a "hard" server namely only allowing one toon per-account on that server (UO allowed for 5 and later on 6 per-account) also taking away the Recall spell for insta travel.
And no one has every really come out and say "why" Ultima Online 2 was thrown in the trash, and then later on why Ultima X a game that was also going to be an MMO was thrown out as well. EA claims that they didn't want to hurt UO with UO2. However almost a week after UO2 went away EA started to work on Sims-Online. And not only that shutting down UO2 was a stupid move in the long run, UO2 was on PC Gamers "Most wanted games list" for a few months, even beating out Shadowbane (as back then many believed Shadowbane was the next big thing) a few times. Also lets just add in that they could have gotten sued big time by Todd "I made Spawn" Mcfarlane, as he did the Monster/NPC Art for UO2. And had lines of Comicbooks and Action Figures for UO2.
Oh and lets not forget that EA also got the UO Vets into hissy fits not once, but two damn times. The first time with Trammel, and most of those upset where Players who liked the open PvP World. The other time was with Age of Shadows that changed the WHOLE Combat and Item System. And yes that upset people, I knew many people who spent a ton of gold on a Runic Weapon, or a high end Magic Weapon. Age of Shadows made many of those somewhat worthless overnight. Many people hated the new Combat system...
And most UO Vets will tell you EA did all of that for the money.
As for KOTOR Online, the first KOTOR was a level based game that used the D20 rules set that you can find in Dungeons and Dragons Third Edition. I think this is mostly due to the fact that the Star Wars Pen and Paper RPG was also made by WoC who also makes D&D. It did use the Skills and Feats system that is in D&D, but it wasn't "skill based" in the form that many of you want.
As for the crew behind this game, they have come out and said a few times that they want to go with the WoW gameplay rather then the Pre-CU. Infact Gordon Walton who most likely is helming this game gave a good speech last year on making MMO's in the Post-WoW World here's a link. www.gamasutra.com/php-bin/news_index.php
Alot of that doesn't sound like what the SWG Vets want. Then again Gordon is also known for mass bannings of more of the "well known" griefer errrr I mean Player Killer Guilds on UO...
And lets not forget one big thing that none of you are looking at, KOTOR has been one of the bigger Xbox titles. BioWare has been a very big supporter of the Xbox for the longest amount of time. This game will more then likely show up on the 360, well the 360 and Games for Windows more then likely. And EA is somewhat in bed with Microsoft now, I know some of the new heads over at Microsoft's Games and Xbox stuff are Ex-EA Higher Up's, and Peter Moore is over at EA.
The point I'm getting at is, this isn't going to be a Pre-CU like game. You are right it will be very story driven, but it's going to be Level Based, and more then likely Combat will be somewhat like Mass Effect only with more Melee Combat.
I'm just waiting to see if anything at all will be officially released by LA, Bioware, or SOE commenting on , confirming, denying or spinning this probably premature and unexpected release by EA. I would love to see the tap dancing. Any current player out there that posts on the SWG Oforums, please go on there and ask what the future of SWG will be if the info is true. Someone here posted there already got banned. I bet SOE will continue that policy because they know they can't say the truth because they will lose current and any future subs. They can't lie because when the truth comes out it will harm their already damaged rep. It seems to me they are going to ignore and sweep it under the rug. And silence any customer that tries to bring it up. You are paying for this product. They have made promises of where the game is going like Hoth and DE revamp. Now if they know they are going to shut down because LA doesn't want two SW MMO's, will these and other promises really be fulfilled. Even if they are how much time will you have left to play them. These are certainly questions I would want answers to if I was subbed. And unless I had these confirmed answers by SOE, I will never resub. I was starting to think about it with the WS upgrade. But now, I honestly feel this game could be pulled at any moment. What would be the point.
i give nge another 4 months before it shuts down.
i knew hoth wasn't going to go in the game and i bet they won't even put gu5 in now.
i just hope they shutdown the nge in the next few weeks i want to go to vegas and laugh at the fanbois and fanbots at fanfest. and now i can say to $OE "this wouldn't have happen if you didn't take pre-cu from us!"
we won.
LOL
You've been saying that for three years, buckaroo.
That said, I'm really looking forward to seeing what Bioware is going to come up with to separate this game from the run-of-the-mill MMOs.
EDIT: It was the "fanbois and fanbots" that "took pre-CU away from you"? WOW. Talk about misplaced aggression.
If you read what he wrote "and now I can say to $OE this wouldn't have happened if you didn't take pre-cu from us!" he's actually directing his nerd rage towards soe with that.
Is a man not entitled to the herp of his derp?

If this does turn out to be true, I guarantee you swg will finally shut down. Its barely teetering on the edge of survivability now. A new Star Wars mmo will effectively kick swg in its ass and over the edge. Since Bioware apparently has been working on this for 4 years already and it looks like they're shooting for a 2009 release, swg will end sometime in 2009. So fanbois, enjoy your beloved nge/swg, cause you have a year at most left.
did you pull that development time from your ass?????
It didnt even go to design discussion until December 2005, the Hero engine which it is being built on wasnt licenced until mid 2006 and then streambase in apr 2007, The former SWG devs that are working on it wernt hired until 2006 and a actual deal with lucasarts probably after just a design brief and a prototype world example wasnt struck till Oct 07.

Quoting from the Gamespot article, which references Information Week: "Now, a little more is known about the BioWare MMORPG. The most recent issue of Information Week contains an article examining some of the technology behind the project, which will reportedly use enterprise software from StreamBase Systems. In the course of the article, BioWare technical director Bill Dalton revealed that the MMORPG is currently slated to ship in 2009."
And the segment from THAT article, parentheses added by me so you don't hurt your eyes looking for it: "BioWare has not announced the name or described the nature of its online game, but (Bill) Dalton (technical director of Bioware) said it will be launched in 2009."
It may not be accurate, but Ginaz didn't "pull it from" his/her "ass".

I stand corrected then but i would be very suprised if it hit a 09 release that development cycle is rather short unless their is a massive team on it, or its small world linear crap.

No question, it'd be amazing if they hit that release period with a relatively bug-free and feature-complete game. There is definitely a massive team on it, most of them very experienced, and they've incorporated some things to reduced the time, like the Hero Engine (www.heroengine.com). All the same, it'll probably be released in 2010, but the original point of contention was the statement "it looks like they're shooting for a 2009 release",which they are.

Maybe, but I didn't pull the expected 2009 release date "out of my ass" like the other poster suggests. If he going to call someone out like that then he better get it right.

Right now, most people I've talked to, myself included (yes I talk to myself), think it'll be the latter. There will probably be a lot of elements from KoTOR in it, mostly the obvious storyline elements, but some things like pausing combat you just can't do. Personally, I expect a lot of RPG elements to the game, as that's what Bioware has always brought to the table in epic fashion, but that's a double-edged sword. When you have to play through the dev's story, it leaves little room for your own. But I don't think we'll be able to call this SWG2, which bothers me from the standpoint that LA may allow SOE to keep the license for SWG if there are still half a dozen people playing it.

I see this as entity of its own .. And it will be x-platform(and if it is ..it will fail) ..the SWG vets will not be satisfied with this ..and will continue there trail of tears.......

You are right it will be very story driven, but it's going to be Level Based, and more then likely Combat will be somewhat like Mass Effect only with more Melee Combat.
i give nge another 4 months before it shuts down.
i knew hoth wasn't going to go in the game and i bet they won't even put gu5 in now.
i just hope they shutdown the nge in the next few weeks i want to go to vegas and laugh at the fanbois and fanbots at fanfest. and now i can say to $OE "this wouldn't have happen if you didn't take pre-cu from us!"
we won.
If you read what he wrote "and now I can say to $OE this wouldn't have happened if you didn't take pre-cu from us!" he's actually directing his nerd rage towards soe with that.

did you pull that development time from your ass?????

IW article, so you don't hurt your fingers clicking everywhere: www.informationweek.com/news/internet/showArticle.jhtml

All the same, it'll probably be released in 2010, but the original point of contention was the statement "it looks like they're shooting for a 2009 release", which they are.

Maybe, but I didn't pull the expected 2009 release date "out of my ass" like the other poster suggests. If he going to call someone out like that then he better get it right.

Are we looking at SWG2 a true Kotor Online or a complete entity of its own that doesnt resemble either game other than its Star Wars
