General: KoTOR MMO confirmed by Riccitiello

StraddenStradden Managing EditorMember CommonPosts: 6,696

Well, it seems as though the cat has finally been let out of the bag as John Riccitiello, the CEO of Electronic Arts, told portfolio.com that the upcoming MMORPG from Bioware was indeed Knights of the Old Republic.

MMORPG.com will continue to follow this story as it develops.

"We've got two of the most compelling MMOs in the industry in development," said Riccitiello. The first title, based on the Warhammer property, will launch soon. "And the one that people are dying for us to talk to them about -- in partnership with Lucas, coming out of BioWare, which is, I think, quite possibly the most anticipated game, full stop, for the industry at the point when we get closer to telling you about it."

Does Riccitiello mean the oft rumored Knights of the Old Republic Online?  "Yes," he said.

    Again I say:

If there are ANY playable Jedi, the game is over before it began.

  • DloreDlore Member UncommonPosts: 462

The game will not be named KOTOR but simply "The Old Republic".

    I like KoToR better!

I don't know, I mean Jedi are actually around in the Old Republic...

I find it quite amusing that the game has hardly been announced, and already people are predicting its doom.

Chill out everyone. You don't even know what BioWare is planning exactly. What if it's like the KotoR series and players are ALL jedi, only with different skillsets?

Let's keep the speculaltion down until they actually announce something, hm?

    Man, this is awesome news!

SWG has been around for some time and it's really time for a new generation (old timeline?) SW MMO.

SW deserves that! We deserve that!!!

    Cheers!!!

After the grind SOE put us through for round one, two, AND three to get Jedi...

...I don't mind playing them in another game. Ever. Earned it (unlike the NGE's)

Much <3 for the newbie Jedi through NGE and later, I'm just sayin' there is something about that hum which always draws one back, to go over any obstacle.

Full translation: can't wait for the Old Republic.

This is a crock and you know it. The only reason playable jedi was so wrong for SWG was because of the timeline. A KOTOR mmo doesn't have those restrictions, so no problem there. I honestly think Bioware will do an amazing job on balancing force users with other proffessions.

Since this news broke i have been reading alot of others opinions. Some seem to think that this mmo will be very linear and play out like the single player kotor games, in which i think is not correct.

I think that over the last 3 yrs. LA/Bioware have done their homework and have taken notice of how bitter the pre-cu players have fought and i think won against what SOE did to SWG. I can't see them making a new SW mmo in that same mold.

In my own opinion i think the mmo will have the most story driven content ever seen in any mmo to date. I also think planets and worlds will not be confined and instanced, ala AOC.

Will it have player driven economy and player housing, only time will tell. I tend to think that the game will have a large array of differnt proffession's and will allow a player to move in and out of each one with a skill system setup.

LA's can't be so inept to overlook over 250k former SWG players and make another SWG NGE. That would be mmo suicide and i think they know that. They also know that the game will have to have the best elements of what people loved about SWG.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                The biggest seller for me is that, even though the origional trilogy was what i was raised on, the kotor yr's has a much more open and less of canon feel to it.

Content will be much better, because it can be created wothout having to stay within a certain time period. It's basicly an open book. New races, weapons, ships and planet's can all be created and open up a whole new SW world.

Most excellent! I actually agree with the people who say including Jedi's is ok. With the games timeline you actually had massive jedi wars. Millions of jedi. So keeping them out of gameplay seems... odd. Mind you I could see them being left out as a story only element. Thats really up to the developers and game designers.

All I know is as a old SWG fan who left before the crash of NGE, Im looking forward to round two

I really don't understand at all why the KoTOR fanboys are pissed that it is going to be an mmo... I would bet my life on it that Bioware will not let the epic storytelling that comes with their games slide because it is an mmo... If anything this game will have the best single player ever... Imagine multiple people and classes in a world like that of Mass Effect or KoTOR 1 and 2 the possibilities for storyline are really endless and will undoubtedly be endless.

They will mainly focus on console so it will be a casual friendly noob game in style ala wow, with dumb down world to fit into a console, its going down drain with pc games and mmo's no exception:(.

Bioware is a good rpg maker but they have EA as boss now and consoles are main focus, so do the math here.

    Games played:AC1-Darktide'99-2000-AC2-Darktide/dawnsong2003-2005,Lineage2-2005-2006 and now Darkfall-2009.....
In between WoW few months AoC few months and some f2p also all very short few weeks.

This is true.  More importantly....the vast majority of them were barely padawans anyway.  I think the issue most players HAVE with the Jedi as a class is the notion (which is always supported by stupid &%*$&% LA) that all Jedis are gods among men.  Frankly...only the oldest and most experienced were all that special.  Young students could barely make a persons head tingle.

The fact is....there is actually MORE room for massive amounts of options if they DO take the jedi route.  Besides the insane ton of basic skills they could implement (splicing...ect, you get the ideal) they have what is, essentially, a completely endless well of things to train just inside Jedi talents.  Not all Jedis were the same either...in fact most had specialties based on what they focused their training on.

Now...whether or not LA just shuts their stupid mouth and lets the professionals handle this is still up for grabs.  Left to its own devices.....Bioware has already proven to be VERY good at making Star Wars games.  They have also proven themselves capable of making a nearly full on jedi game filled with options and flavor.

I feel they are plenty capable of making this a good game.  They even have the "Blizzard advantage" of having a stellar IP already backed by armies of rabid fans loyal to games produced under it.  Truth be told...if anyone stands an equal chance of taking that kind of slice of the pie, its them.

They only get one chance, though.  Hope they don't blow it.  One dropped ball will essentially kill their chances of breaking into THIS market.  We are a fickle people...and unforgiving.

    a kotor mmo, so what?

    lol

ElectronicArts oh my f. god.... and you guys think they will add something like pre-cu swg?

they will defently not develop a sandbox style game, it will be a cookie cutter style gameplay like world of warcraft, only with the starwars theme...

I hear people say that this game will be over before it begains if Jedi are  a playable in the game. Well the Jedi and the Sith is what KORTOR is all about man!  In that time frame they are a very big part of the wars and battles that took place. The other big faction were the Mandalorians I bet that they  will be a playable class also or least I hope they will they could hold there own vs Jedi or Sith but the point is in MHO they have to have Jedi and Sith in game because thats whats alot of players would want , now just because they are in the game don't mean that they have to  be unbeatable I trust that Bioware & LA will find a nice  balance of the classes for the game, if not it can't be any worse than SWG is right now.

Except, isn't it really about 'Good Jedi' vs. 'Evil Jedi' and 'The Republic' vs. 'The Sith' vs. the Manadalorians?

I thought that in this time, 'Sith' referred to a race or faction of non-force sensitive people and NOT to the evil force-sensitive people.

You are right on all points !  :)  But thats what so good about that timeframe :)
