Man, this is awesome news! SWG has been around for some time and it's really time for a new generation (old timeline?) SW MMO.
SW deserves that! We deserve that!!! Cheers!!!
Is it? Does it? I much prefer to see effort being put into something new actually rather than simply ripping off an old film that has already been ripped off god knows how many times. How many more Star Wars games are they gonna churn out? Oh I like Star Wars dont get me wrong but lets face it.......in a 100 years from now games companies will STILL be churning them out, knowing full well that the games will sell cos its "Woot! Star Wars! Yay I LOVE Star Wars! Itz zo coool!".
Its a good thing some people out there can come up with new ideas though.
Get to the point... you don't want it. I don't care.

Again I say: If there are ANY playable Jedi, the game is over before it began.
Of course there will be playable Jedi. Its what all the kids will want. Then everyone can be the coolest and the best! There will be hundreds if not thousands of them running around chopping everything up with lightsabers and they will all have names like "Handy Solo", "Look Skywacker" and "Dark Vader". Everyone will be the coolest and the best.
Hopefully if it plays like WoW then it will attract all the kids and leave the more mature players for other games

Maybe if you tried playing KotOR, you'd realize that at that time, the Jedi weren't wiped out. Both sides actually had large numbers and they fought with each other all the time. So it would make sense to have Jedi and Sith classes.

NO! The only thing that makes sense is to get old pre NGE SWG back! There is no other way, are you daft?
The main thing that bothers me about this decision is that jedi will NOT be jedi. The first quest where your jedi has to kill X bandits for X amount of items or w/e well you're not a Jedi anymore. For a jedi combat is supposed to be a last resort not an all the time resort that is just the easy way to play. That was the best part of the KOTOR games was the different ways you could solve the situations and the LIGHT/DARK meter. If kotor will be an mmo EVERYONE will be darkside in the eyes of the lore and it'll just be hey my sith is cooller than your sith...
I don't think it'll be as difficult as you think. We don't know what time line this is, and further the openness of where the story can go is pretty broad. Off the top of my head - Sith vs. Jedi war, or even Mandolrian's (manipulated by Dark Jedi) vs. the Republic. That's give any "Jedi" the ability to wield the weapon w/ in the code. It may be a stretch, but remember this isn't the council, or even the order from the OT/PT time era. It's what BUILT that oreder. This could be the war that made the Jedi code change.
Again I say: If there are ANY playable Jedi, the game is over before it began.

I have played and completed KotRO. It was a pretty good single player game actually. In the mmo version there will probably be a single-player-style storyline (just like there is in any mmo) to follow for the jedis and a single-player-style storyline to follow for the sith. Thousands of players will all be experiencing the same story and they will all be the cool hero in the story. When they reach the end of the linear story it will boil down to Sith and Jedi characters running about twatting each other with lightsabers in a big never-ending PvP battle that will constitute end-game content.
Then again Bioware are a good company so they might produce something good instead.
Im not a Star Wars nerd but I do injoy the univers of Star Wars and I loved the KOTOR games. So I defently will give this a try. Hopefully they wont screw it up.

True the games are that way...However, if you read the books on Kotor...Like Darth Bane Bath of Destruction and Darth Bane rule of two... You would realize that there are only 2 dark Jedi and the Light side Jedi are being wiped out....
So all in all its the time line that they pick --the good thing about it is as long as it is not called Knights of the old Republic online(which I doubt it will be because that is not one of the names trademarked)
And it is called something like "Star Wars The Old Republic" --well all that we know of about the Old Republic is from the KOTOR games and a few books, and what we have been told that Jedi battled each other...
However, we don’t know much more----what if the game is based on before the Jedi---and you allow the player base become Jedi if they unlock it and take it to the next part..

The Darth Bane books cover only a small portion of the Old Republic Timeline. And the Rule of Two was only instated with Darth Bane. Before him, there were many many Dark Jedi/Sit. And guess what...the Old Republic was still present.
And if you want to go as far back as no jedi existing...well, you'd have to go before the Old Republic for that. And then you'd have the Sith as a race to consider, too. And tzhe Hyperspace Wars.
All in all, there's much more source-material than you apparently seem to think there is.
I hope not, and I'll play it even if it is, just because I feel that Bioware would at least have the sense to make sure the game was ready before they released it.
I really really hope that it'll be a skill based game like SWG was, and AC is. Unfortunately I see it being more along the lines of AoC where you don't even asign stat points or have any say in your character development at all besides selecting feats or whatever.
Not to be the prophet of doom or anything, but it seems to me that WoW has a lot of these gaming companies scared to make a traditional MMO that would be seen as being a WoW clone. Everyone seems to want to try and make their games more action oriented, which is fine for some, but loses sight of what a 'true' MMORPG should be.

As I recall though, didn't Darth Bane come some time after the events of the first KotOR? So while it is a part of the Old Republic, it's much later on.
Honestly, they could drop players down at any point... it could even be before the KotOR events. I think though that the most important thing to remember is that this is not only one of the biggest periods in Jedi/Sith history, but it's also a very important time for other races as well who have taken sides in their wars. So while yes there will be Jedi, there will also be a ton of other options available... along with stories that can be made just for the game itself (which I believe a previous poster mentioned).
While I would be suprised to find a Sandbox game here...It may be possible to still hope for a non-level skill based system or a lvl/skill system like CU that does not shove you into one class. Might be a bit much to hope for..but what is life without hope.
And as a Pre-Cu vet I am very excited about this game. I have nothing against the lvl/class system its just that it was so poorly done and just plain wrong for SWG. It was the morals of $OE that pissed me off, not the game (ok the game pissed me off too...only because it was so Horrid)

Ok as the biggest SW fan out there *grins* I am officially happy. This is prolly the best news I have heard about gaming ever since Ultima ended. I feel my heart beating faster, like a teenager in love for the first time. A Star Wars MMO in the KOTOR era, made by Bioware, funded by EA... great. No matter what the details are, I am sure it will be FRIGGING GREAT.
It seems the Force was with us.
Now what do I do with my live in those meaningless years of waiting?

Let's keep the speculaltion down until they actually announce something, hm?

Like some have mentioned, the Old Republic era encompasses a vast period of time. Knights of the Old Republic took place 3956 BBY. Whereas Darth Bane: Path of Destruction occured around 1006 BBY. So yeah, there's plenty of time before Bane's Rule of Two was implemented to have vast amounts of Sith running about.
EA might not be controlling development of the game, but they sure seem interested in marketing it and marketing it ASAP......bet the boys in Austin are fuming .

Somehow I don't think they're going to announce to the most rabid, obsessive, frothing nerds in the world that their train is coming home through portfolio.com.
Yeah I was thinking the same thing.
The possibly most anticipated MMO release is mentioned off hand to a portfolio.com blogger? I've listened to 5 podcasts reporting from E3 and none have mentioned this news at all. All other stories on this is simply a link back to portfolio.com
If EA/Bioware was to break the news I would think they would do it during their presentation and not in an off handed comment to someone.
It may be true but the reporting seems a bit odd.
"If we don't attack them, they will attack us first. So we'd better retaliate before they have a chance to strike"

I am quite sure it was an "accident" - maybe a purposeful idiscretion, but something indeed not planned. Its quite weird to announce one of the possibly most awaited games ever in a single sentence on portfolio. I am tbh still a bit in doubt if he wasnt misquoted and they all think VERY hard at EA and Bioware to undo the damage, when its acutally a misunderstanding. But lets presume for the time being its all as it seems. This interpretations is making me feel better atm.

I think Bioware has been able to deny working on a KOTOR mmo because they themselves might not consider it a mmo. Bioware might very well redefine what we think of a mmo. So far in my experience I have not played a mmo that kept me going because of the story. If Bioware is able to achieve this I think its a big step forward. With not even a official announcement of the game there is already fan sites popping up. The kotor online wiki and www.kotor3mmo.com

How so? In the Old Republic times Jedi were quite numerous.
Is it?

I think this looks very promising.
