Kotor Online is not an MMO

BetaguyBetaguy Member UncommonPosts: 2,629

Serious, it is not an MMO. It is the same as Kotor but with some multiplayer action, I know this and do not need to divulge my sources.  The real SW MMO is being developed along side this game but will be Clone Wars era based and not a Kotor MMO.

The new SW MMO will be announced soon and will be released in 2009, it will run along side the tv series starting up in 2009.

In case you are right, I'm sorry to say I will still not remember your name. Too quick to forget random predictions on a forum like this. ;)

But I'll have to agree. If the next KOTOR is just a normal KOTOR with A Multiplayer part (say like NWN) to it, I'll still be very happy. Might even be better, considering you'd not have to deal with all the disgruntled SWG Vet's who'd spam the local chat with their complaints about how it's not like original SWG.

I agree, it will be a great game, just not what everyone is expecting.

I think that part is a given by now, even if it is a KOTOR with Multiplayer Part or a MMO. People will be expecting something completely different from what BioWare will deliver. Anyway, pointless assumptions enough.

I hope you're wrong.  Well, you're wrong about one thing... you choose not to divulge your sources.  When you say you don't need to divulge them, you assume everyone here knows you personally and can vouch for you as being the biggest truth-telling know-it-all of all time.  I'm just guessing that's not the case.  So you can choose not to divulge your sources, but you certainly need to if you wish to be taken seriously.  Or hell, just point out where you've been right in the past, and I'll accept that myself, if nobody else will.

NO! I don't care about that game, but the frustrated SW fans will come flaming here again! Just like with AoC.... With stupid statements like "the name said Online, it isn't online, let's sue them for having a false name".

I know what it's like not to be able to talk about sources but wanting to tell people something and honestly, I wouldn't be too surprised if you were right here.  I've always thought even when playing Neverwinter Nights, how come 'KOTOR' never got a toolset allowing players to forge community made quests and online worlds, with some more classes/not jedi thrown in so I wouldn't be surprised if we got a KOTOR 3 with some cool online features.

As for the Star Wars MMORPG, either way is fine by me as well - as long as it does the IP justice... though I would prefer 'The Old Republic' by BioWare [Technically CLONE WARS is Old Republic, because the republic had been around for THOUSANDS of years pre-Rise of the Empire]

Well, I have some sources too. They disagree with you.

First, the CEO of Electronic Arts.

    N. Evan Van Zelfden in Los Angeles warns, watch out World of Warcraft. In an interview at E3 this week, Electronic Arts chief executive John Riccitiello said that EA is working on the next version of Star Wars game Knights of the Old Republic, and it will most certainly have a massively multiplayer online component to it.

Secondly, some comments on the design by the dev team themselves, released before they could speak of the subject matter.

So, whomever your source might be, he/she is quite mistaken. This will be a Bioware MMOG based on KOTOR.

BioWare is working on an MMO. That is not a rumor. BioWare is not working on KotOR 3. That is not a rumor (we are also not working on Baldur's Gate 3, Neverwinter Nights 3, Barbie Dream Home 3, etc). We are making an MMO, but the subject of what that MMO will be is rumors.

We do not comment on rumors. Sorry for your confusion.

It is kind of funny because yesterday I made mention of a parallel to the clone wars show (check my posts).  I had heard a rumor some time ago about an MMO being based on the new Clone Wars show being made.

scrogdog thanks for the 1up link, thats an interesting read even if it is quite old news. Great to see Rich Vogel is on the team, hopefully his swg influence might show through

1.) Bioware is working on two games, Dragon Age and an MMO.  They are teamed up with Lucas Arts, therefore the MMO MUST be an LA IP.

2.) The name of the game is already confirmed to be along the lines of "Old Republic".

I swear, it's been dead obvious bioware has been working on the Star Wars MMO for quite some time now... Even when it's pretty much announced, people still doubt it.  I bet when they officially announce it, give all the details, start up the community, etc. people will still be trying to claim it's not going to be an MMO.  Hell, when the game is launched as an MMO, people will STILL deny it.  Why can't you people just accept the facts?

    LoL

it is interesting that there are still people have doubts about the IP or subject of  this game.

it is star wars kotor mmo man, just get over it.

i am here for 3 years and followed this progress step by step, and it was obvious to be a kotor mmo since the first day of mmo announcement (march 2006)

  • GFW: And what of player-created content? Player-built cities, player-run businesses, that sort of thing?

RV: There'll definitely be an economy in our game, like WoW. But is our game going to be a simulation? No. Our game is an entertainment experience.

JO: If we're going to create immersive, epic stories that are believable, that really goes against having a simulation-type world. Those two things don't go together well.

doesnt look like its going to be sandbox though... heres hoping it will be skill based at least

Sorry, Audio. But I believe this passage speaks directly to class interdependence.

GFW: Another BioWare strength, aside from story, is character customization. For lots of reasons, most MMORPGs lock you into classes without a ton of flexibility, which conflicts with customization. What's your philosophy?

RV: It's really important to have roles in an MMORPG. If you understand your role in the world, and others understand your role in the world with you, then you can get group dynamics and social behavior. [Developers] can set up interdependencies, which promote social dynamics in a game. If you don't have that, then you end up with loners ... and the world breaks down a little bit. Now, you'll be able to solo if you like in our game, that's for sure -- it's one thing that WoW proved can work. But it'll be a choice whether or not you want to group or not. You run into problems when people feel they're forced to group up or raid to get somewhere in the game.

JO: And while roles are important for gameplay, the visual aspect of your character is an area where we can let player differentiate themselves. We are gonna have a good selection of visual customization. We're probably gonna have more visual customization than you've seen in a BioWare game before.

  • hmm yeh i did read that but kind of hoped that even in skill based system you can be a 'class' - but yeh, looks like its going to be classes, quests and levels and no sandbox

heres hoping theres no frackin instances at least

No instances? Yeah, I'm with you on that one.

After all, if we had instances in the old days then I could never have pulled trains against all those helpless n00bs in Blackburrow in old EQ.

    Kidding. I'm kidding. :)

Usually I was the victim, not the perp. Hehehe

Anyway... it was all in good fun. And good training too. If you didn't learn to finish up business and run for your life when the shout TRAIN went up, in a "serious" dungeon I mean, you were probably doomed. :)

Ah the good old days. I miss 'em.
