WOW owns 60% of the MMORPG field. Thousands of websites support the game and millions of videos show how the best players play in PVE and PVP. Supporting add ons, UI adaptations, class tips, gaming tips. You name it/ One of the better: www.wowinsider.com It is now for almost 1100 days the mosty played game on XFire (number 1) and this being backed up by all kind of independant sources. Wow is also the ONLY game in the top 10 that you have to PAY to play. CoD4 being a far second but free to play. That alone says enough. Of course you can play Vanguard in which there are about 40K subscribers. Number of voters that vote with their wallets .... says it all.
Yeh because, Blizzard spent more money on marketing campaign before release (40$mil) than Sigil for the whole development of Vanguard (30$mil)
It's like comparing Titanic movie with 200$+budget with Waking Life that had 2.5$mil. Apparently Titanic saw much MORE people and many more will say it's a great movie, while waking life has much smaller fan base.

HOW can a MMORP game be any good if the company doesn't have enough development money?
Something a lot of people here don't quite understand.
Hence the many failures in gaming land. And MMORPG's are so much harder to make than a 90 minute motion picture these days.

Marketing in the Netherlands here for MMO's was non existant before WoW (now you see the tv commercial sometimes) but I can tell you that that game spread on sheer word of mouth in my community and had *nothing* to do with any adds and the like which didn't really become visible till the Celebrity adds were made a few years in.
I know many people who never played MMO's and thought paying monthly was the last thing they'd ever do change their mind in an instant after they got to play the open beta.
This game sold itself on *merits*, not on a marketing campaign.

Muds, UO, EQ, now those sold on merits, Blizzard on the other hand tapped into a budding market with product recognition to back them up. The only merit WoW has, its that a lot of people play it.

Let me hit you with another analogy. Will Smith is to rap what WoW is to MMORPGs. Easily accessible and instantly recognized, but true to the genre? Not one freakin bit.

What? X-fire being a decent argument?
Of course. As are the audited financial reports of Vivendi showing a 1.2 billion dollar revenu for Blizzard and 10.7 million active subscriptions.
or are you from the club that thinks Blizzard is into some kind of Columbian drug dealing?
)
For one thing IS sure : MMORPG.COM is NOT representative for the MMORPG scene.
XFire is a very good tool to watch what players play out there in the WESTERN world ))

I dont consider myself a hater more an aficionado, or a connaisseur of mmorpgs. And frankly the idea of a game ripping of components from every other game and selling it based on product recognition? Why that doesnt tickle my palate at all. WoW has set MMOs way back in the fact that there is very little innovation because everyone wants to build a new WoW model for the money. Its been 10 years, and games are actually getting worse? Thanks WoW. Thanks a lot.

No it been 10 years and the MMO genre has hit a brick wall.. its out of ideas.. you cant blame WoW if every 1 wants to copy it.. which they aint (cept maye WAR and Lotro), we just have to wait for the next revolution in a few years.

WoW must be part of the brick wall then, because its just an eq copy with every other games ideas thrown in.
In fact Id say its the mortar that holds the walls of this prison together.

We can surely not blame WoW or Blizzard for it. We can only blame the community and players that are willing to pay and play games like WoW that brought no innovation. It's a proof that huge advertisment with no originality can be very succesful.

Game. Set. match. (though I still blame em for setting the "financial" bar that all these other companies are more interested in than innovation.) Stagnation via facsimile
Thank you for the posts, I did find some tools along the way. However, I didn't see too much in the area of comparison between the two. Mostly, people have said I like this game or that without telling me what it is that makes their game number one. To me, that sounds like the type of marketing that WoW supposedly used which so many people are criticizing.
It is obvious from the posts that WoW has a larger player base.
How about PvP?
How about Live Events?
How about Raiding?
I have heard mixed opinions about the soloability of Vanguard. Is it true that Vanguard is soloable like I know WoW is?
How about end-game aside from those things mentioned above? I don't like game hopping or paying for multiple subscriptions.
Are there any micro-transactions? Micro-transactions kill games by making rich people elite, and eventually destroying the player base.
Are there multiple ways for a particular class to be successful in the end-game? I don't want my end-game character to feel like a stock build.
To give you an idea of my gaming preference I enjoyed playing DDO except that the game wasn't soloable(solo option on quests only viable for first few levels) and it was hard to find groups(insufficient player base).
I don't get how people still say wow ripped off every idea they had from other MMOs. Everyone knows the original is always the best, if wow is just EQ with its cartoony feel then EQ wouldn't be a ghost town that it is today. The fact is wow is just plain fun, its a feeling thats hard to describe but everything is just so well done compared to other games its hard to play half the crap out there. I don't even know how anyone can ever compare a game like EQ where you literally just sat in one spot and grinded mobs for hours and hours and hours to WoW where you can solo and quest where it never actually feels like grinding. Or how about raids in EQ where almost all of them are pure tank and spank zergfests where you throw 72 people at the boss and whack away at em, Wows raids have come a long way and are very balanced around good tanks, healers and even good dps with most bosses having an enrage timer that wipes you if you don't dps hard enough.
I personally like vanguard too, its finally starting to be fun to play and still has a lot of potential but the main problem is no one plays it and no matter how good it gets it won't be very fun without people to interact with. Its also clunky compared to wow, your character feels like a stick figure and the animations are bad too which I hear they are fixing in the next content patch.
Like others have said don't listen to this forum for much concerning WoW, most of them are probably still playing dungeons and dragons in their basement with their full set of chainmail.

The Wow hate is a laugh at MMORPG.COM
tell me what game has more polished end game content than Wow? So I can laugh too....
And marketing doesn't make games a succes for 4 years ! and certainly not in the same numbers as Wow did.
Conan anyone )))
62% of the MMORPG market and you guys are SO frustrated it comes out of your pants.
of course this gentleman may play any other MMORPG outthere, BUT ...
I am not the one who publishes ridiculous one liners... on a ... Wow forum.
So frustrated you don't even have fun anymore, while 10 million pay to play and laugh at that clown.
I remember him bashing on Wow when Conan launched. Conan was the real Wow killer (for the 7th in a row)
The man with the clown defended Conan...2 months ago... just to bash on the number one.

Vanguard was not made by Sony.
It is owned by Sony which means they can do whatever they want with it. Remember, it has always been true that it is easier to destroy than to create.

This game sold itself on *merits*, not on a marketing campaign.
Muds, UO, EQ, now those sold on merits, Blizzard on the other hand tapped into a budding market with product recognition to back them up. The only merit WoW has, its that a lot of people play it.
Be aware however, following that masses can be detrimental. I can recall a time when everyone thought Milli Vanilli was cool. Pow, thats 2 poser burns in one post.
That's the same silly remark as comparing the MMORPG industry to food.
If I were you I let that kind of remarks to the Director of FunCON (Age of Conan) these days. Conan was steak and Wow and LOTRO were so called hamburgers.
Yep,.... if millions of people PAY for a game to keep playing it and the other top 10 games being played are ... for free. It says a LOT of that number one position. Today btw WOW was being played on XFire ...3 times more than number 2.
If all decent arguments fail ....

Hahahaha yeh, they spent all these milions just for the f*** of it.

Let me hit you with another analogy. Will Smith is to rap what WoW is to MMORPGs. Easily accessible and instantly recognized, but true to the genre? Not one freakin bit.

Of course. As are the audited financial reports of Vivendi showing a 1.2 billion dollar revenu for Blizzard and 10.7 million active subscriptions.
or are you from the club that thinks Blizzard is into some kind of Columbian drug dealing?

We can surely not blame WoW or Blizzard for it. We can only blame the community and players that are willing to pay and play games like WoW that brought no innovation. It's a proof that huge advertisment with no originality can be very succesful.
So who made a fool out of himself back then ?
