Ive played both WoW and LoTRO and if I had to recommend just one to someone Id go with WoW..... LoTRO is fun but only for a short while......I think WOW has alot more to offer in the long run and you may change your mind about PVP once you do the battlegrounds......WoWs PVP is very easy and if you lose its no big deal..... LoTRO has a beautiful world but unless you really really really like doing quests youll get bored with it.....
Mindless gear progression...or story/lore progression. Which one equates to a better PVE game? This isn't a trick question.
I've played WoW since release (still play). I've played LotRO since open beta (still play). LotRO wins PVE content and immersion hands down.
I don't know how old your kids are, but I would suggest LoTR if they are young. The WoW community in global chat is really bad. If your kids are 12+ then I would suggest Vanguard. I just came back for my free month and I can't stop playing. If you and your family want a good challenge Vanguard is a good choice. If you are looking for a little bit of a easier game LoTR is a good choice.
Also in Vanguard there is a option for a brotherhood. The brotherhood allows you to join with multi people and any time you get experience it splits it with those people. So if you have a limited amount of computers everyone levels at the same speed.

I dislike these types of comments. All MMO's I have played have immature people who shout globally racist comments, sexual innuendo or just swear like a sailor. It is fair to say that a percentage of the MMO-community is this way, and it just more OBVIOUS in a game like WoW due to high subscriptions. If you're the only player in a zone in Vanguard then yea, obviously there is not going to be any bad language in the zone unless you're the one doing it!!!

I'm laughing that people have suggested FFXI. For those that suggested it, have you PLAYED COH? the gameplay in that is extremely fast paced. FFXI is slow, is not forgiving, its slow, and the style of combat is does not have the freedom that CoH does. Its a terrible suggestion in my eyes. Something that is pretty akin to the type of gameplay style that COH offers (that i've played) is WoW. I have not tried LotRO but am thinking about doing the trial myself.
WoW has the best synergy of classes that I've seen in an MMO. It also offers a very easy tutorial in the beginning. Its so straightforward that it makes you not so lost as I've been in most other MMOs. I think the PVE content is very unique and challenging (well gets challenging at around level 50). I also think its a game that has assured longevity.
I tried EVE online not too long ago... all I have to say is run from that game. The complexity and monotony in that game is beyond anything I've seen in an MMO. Perhaps I just like dwarves/humans etc.
Thanks for all the Input I am downloading the trials to LOTRO and WOW. Isn't FFXI mostly played on a console? I have eight year old twin boys if that help with any other ideas.
I would suggest LOTRO as well. The best part was doing the Book Chapters quests and grouping with others. And of course Music. No better way to start a good fight then by the sound of Minstrel playing Mortal Combat theme.
Oh and i'd recommend rolling on a RP server, to get the full feeling of beeing a part of Middle-Earth world.

I guess you haven't played Vanguard in the past two months. Go the Vanguard official forums and see what a good community it has. If you ask a question you don't get yell at for being a noob. You get the answer you are looking for.
The in game global chat is always full of questions and answers. People don't say stupid jokes or yell at other players. I have yet to see a stupid Chuck Norris jokes, racist comments, sexual innuendo, or people swearing like a sailor.

Lol.
The music feature in Lords of the Ring is amazing. My play list was over 250 songs.
And it was great to hear people playing Zelda, Mario, Korn, etc. Pretty much any type of music can be played via the instruments in LOTRO
I'll just jump in to support the WoW and LotRO suggestions. Personally the choice would boil down to WoW having the most intuitive user interface and game play, while also having the higher number of people with no care for who (e.g. your kids) reads the crap they post in the chat channels. :-p
Originally posted by dterry You might give FFXI a try. With 4-5 people you wouldn't have to spend so much time looking for groups.
Agreed. People complain about the time-consuming grind of FFXI, but in large part that's because of the time involved in constantly forming PUGs. With four or five member static/semi-static party, you should see the game move very nicely, without a need for marathon sessions.

On the contrary, it's played mostly on PCs. It's also available for PS2 and Xbox 360, but it looks best on a PC. The platform you play on is irrelevant, however, as all three platforms play on the same servers. I myself play mostly on PC, but occasionally access my account on my PS2; the same account can be accessed either way (and could also be accessed via Xbox 360 if I had one).
Vanguard is the best option imo. I quit because it was too much PVE and not enough PvP. It requires a party for most missions so great to have if you want a great party game. Age of Conan is another one and I have found the PvE to be quite decent but would not recommend it as a family game. Avoid EVE online at all cost
Vanguard also has some nice graphics which adults and kids will both appreciate.

Lineage 2 imho
hehehehe Perhaps once Gracia hits but it would realy depend on the age of the kids L2 isnt the easiest of games to get into especially Adena wise.

VG or LOTRO
as far as game play goes Asheron's Call was one of the best/ funnest games I have played great community and PVE experience.
Of course as far as graphics goes its at the bottom of the list I would have to say LOTRO is at or near the top.
I tried VSOH and was not impressed with it's graphics.
