Help LFGame - Vetern MMO player

Enzu777Enzu777 Member Posts: 27

Ok so to start off I will tell you a little about me, ive been playing MMO's for the last 10-12 years, since i was a young kid and stumbled upon Ultima Online ive been hooked on the genre.

Ive got to say to date my favorite has been Star Wars Galaxies Pre Combat Update. I was on the tarquinas server.

Ive just got done trying out Archlord and I did enjoy it but it wasnt the type of game that can keep me interested for a long time.. any of you out there that have played SWG knows that it was very community based, and that to me is essential in finding a MMO I will stick with.

So I would like some help from this community (i just joined) in finding a game that is very rich in its community and also I would prefer very highly a game that allows players to have there own houses or even better to have there own player run citys.

Go ahead and make some suggestions to me and tell me a little about the game you suggest plz, I will find out more about it if it sounds like a game I could enjoy.

Im looking for a place for me and my fiance to spend alot of time in until KOTOR MMO comes out, assuming KOTOR will be a sandbox MMO and if it is not a game to stick with for a very long time.

I appreciate your help everyone, and thanks for a warm welcome to your forum (hopefully).

If community is what you are looking for, i would have to go with Lord of the Rings Online.

Heck, i only played the free trial, and the community was so helpful, and actually involved that it made the game so much better for me. Since it is also a familiar enviorment to most of us, it feels great to get in a group  and go through some of the horrid places we once witnessed in the movies or read in the books.

Aye, I'd have to agree. LOTRO has a great community, and so does CoX (City of heroes/Villians).

Currently restarting World of Warcraft :/

    Ultima Online

    EverQuest 2

Star Wars Galaxies - pre cu

    World of Warcraft

    Eve Online

    City of Heroes / Villians

    Dungeons&Dragons Online

    Guild Wars

    RF Online

    Vanguard

    Archlord

This is a list of some of the MMO's I have played, I dont consider it to be all of them but its the ones I could think of off the top of my head, in no paticular order. To list my favs would be..

    1. SWG - Pre Combat Update *

    2. Eve Online

    3. Everquest 2

As far as vanguard being on this list its a game I enjoyed but I only made it to around lvl 20, I picked up the special edition box set the day it came out but the game turned out to be too buggy to really enjoy and not enough people to find a single group, i decided to have a hiatus on that game tho i did really enjoy and have thought about going back to try it again.

If you need any more info feel free to ask me

I would wait for War or Aion.

  • Enzu777Enzu777 Member Posts: 27

Lord of the Rings Online was a game I had thought about looking into. Thank you for those suggestions Im going to go right now to read more in depth about it. From what ive heard tho LOTRO is sort of like EQ2, not a bad thing but im really looking for a sandbox game.

  • AxumAxum Member Posts: 891

So i see a good mix of Sci-fi, and fantasy in there....

I believe if you want a quality Sci-fi mmo you should wait for Stargate Online.

Sad to say this, but i really don't know of any "next-gen" / new sand box mmos X . x

looks like everyone has turned to ezmode games lately.

Any info on Aion or War? Havent heard of either.

Yea I dont really have a preference between fantasy or sci-fi, i respect and enjoy both genres for what they are.. I think my gf would get into sci-fi more but not really sure as Archlord was her first MMO.

Ive noticed as well that there havent been any good sandbox games out in awhile, thats really dissapointing.

I  think my hopes in the MMO world lie with WAR

Atleast with them they are bringing a bit of innovation into the MMO world.

I have been following it since 2005,

so if you have any specific questions i would be more than happy to answer them :P

Im having a look at AION right now and I can say it looks like a great game, although it does look like the same old stuff just rehashed and better looking.

I would be playing an elyos.. probly sorcerer or chanter. Oh and did anyone notice that in the 1st flightpath video the 2nd area looks alot like the barrens? lol.

Im going to go have a look at WAR in a few minutes as soon as finish reading the AION page and i do hope WAR in innovative as you say because AION doseant look to be and thats a word thats thrown around alot these days. I really dont want my hopes to lie in anything other then a sandbox game.

  • AxumAxum Member Posts: 891

Sadly, many people often call WAR a copy of WoW, because of the Orcs, and dwarves, and everything else that makes up a fantasy setting.

But i can tell you that it is going to be quite different.

You can level by pvping, or pveing.

there are currently 40 levels, but 80 ranks which can be earned through RvRing.

the Tome of Knowledge is something you might want to look into.

    Along with their Guild system.

something in aion that is particulary peaking my interest is the fact that you can dye your armor (ala. Ultima Online). Do you know if something like that is possible on WAR?

And on AION there is going to be player housing - post launch, but not actually sitting on the world.. probly going to be instanced like Everquest 2, that to me is extremely dissapointing.. does WAR have player housing and if so is it static and actually on the ground in the world? any player citys or castles? AION has none, the only thing of the sort are several castles the factions will via for control of in the end game area, you can buy npcs to protect it but i want something more like SWG where you made whole player citys or Age of Conan where you build a castle...

Age of Conan is a game I also dont know much about, I thought it was going to be fantastic but since its come out ive heard very little positive about the game.. although I have seen a video of "valhalla" a guild placing all of there buildings for there guilds player made castle and i enjoyed the way that worked.

  • Enzu777Enzu777 Member Posts: 27

Ok im done looking at AION, overal an impressive game but im really hoping I like the looks of WAR better as AION really looks just like everything else redone.

Question: Do you lose xp in WAR when you die? and is the world seamless or zoned.

  • AxumAxum Member Posts: 891

AoC.......All i can say is you can try it if you want.....

its good for a month of button smashing fun xD

but after that it gets kinda eh....

When some of the classes are Useless, you know there is something wrong with the game.

WAR will have color dyes :)

along with trophies you can attatch to your armor.

so itll be unlikely to find another person EXACTLY like you.

There will be no individual player housing but there are "keeps" which guilds can capture.

    image

  • AxumAxum Member Posts: 891

Sadly, it is zoned, but for an RvR type game that is pretty much neccesary,

When you die you get a debuff which decreases your stats, thus making it harder to do things.

That only applies to PvE though.

    image

  • Enzu777Enzu777 Member Posts: 27

I can deal with it being zoned.. even though im not a fan of it, i do understand the limitations since its RvR.

I dont know if i can deal with not having player housing tho.. the best thing ive ever done in any game was to be a politician in SWG and have a guild, lay out an entire citys with all the different zones.. residential, industrial, commerical, public, etc.. and watch the town grow and prosper to be an economic and social hub.

You could say I was sort of a Tycoon on SWG, I had 3 diff characters. Politician / Doctor  ... 2hSwordsman / Combat Medic.. Architect / Armorsmith .. Also had my own city with around 300 people that would take around an hour to walk through located on a huge expanse of sand on tatooine.

WAR looks like alot of fun and innovative in alot of ways, the RVR will be something new and exciting as well as the trophys, that looks like alot of fun.. and no I dont think it looks anything like WoW, if anything WoW looks like warhammer as warhammer has been around longer, there just now getting to making a MMO.

Im just.. not so sure.. because like i said.. the community and the ability to have things to do other then kill is really important to me, im a hard sell I guess. But I would really like for you to give me some info on the things about the game you think I may enjoy (from what ive said so far) and the things your really looking forward to, as well as any and all detailed info you feel like offering up. Im looking for stuff on WAR right now but im honestly not finding alot about the game other then videos showing off the fighting and things like that and im more interested in the paticulars that make it stand out from the crowd.

Don't take this as an attack but Warhammer FRP came out in 1986, so any comparison to WoW would have to be the other way around, stemming from both WFRP and Tabletop. the Art style of Warcraft is very similar to Warhammer.

grndzo i just said that :p but yes I agree if anyone ripped anyone it was wow ripping war

Yea i know, Warcraft 1 was supposed to originally be a warhammer game but games workshop dropped it because it just wasn't their vision of warhammer.

I.E. there are places like Marshes of Madness in WAR and Swamp of Sorrows in WoW

    >.<

    ok anyways

Since you are more of a SEAK like me

(Socialize,Explore,Achieve,Kill) (from most important in a game imo)

They have an interesting crafting system in which there are no recipes,

its kind of like you throw two items in and hope something good comes out.

The better the items the better the result.

Well, along with guilds, there are going to be some great group quests such as public quests. Anyone can join, and you get rewarded for how much you participated.

I can tell you are more of a person who likes to build instead of destroy, and sadly as portrayed in every single video WAR does revolve around WAR. And that was their intention when they started making it. The Tome of Knowledge might keep you preoccupied for a quite a bit, but other than that there are no really make a house type things in the game.

    image

  • Enzu777Enzu777 Member Posts: 27

I am definately a SEAK, although I had never heard that term.

I think WAR looks like it will satisfy alot of the things I enjoy, I did play WoW for 2 years although Im really not a big fan of it.. I was at first but its a game that doseant have alot to it.. I think WAR will be alot like that but with improvements to really keep you into it.

I like the fact that orcs grow as you lvl, and dwarfes beards grow.. do all races have some kind of progression like that? Id either be a Dark Elf, High Elf, Chaos or Human.. so I really hope they grow in some way as well.

Can you tell me some more about guilds taking over the keeps? could say a group of humans actually take control of an orc town and use it as a human town?

Im really interested in Warhammer and I do think I will try it.. in the meantime im still going to be looking for a game that will allow a SEAK to flourish.. I really cant believe there are no games out there that allow people to build player citys and just sit around in a bar (cantina) and have a drink and watch a dancer/listen to music.

Im thinking very seriously about going into game design and right now im looking for a company that would pay for me to go to college in return for me signing a contract with them, and im very interested on working on a sandbox community MMO.. Do you or anyone else know of any companys in the MMO market that actively do things like that? id still be willing to join the company even if it couldnt be a sandbox game but thats where I feel my strong points are, even if the majority of games ive played havent been sandbox.. I guess UO ruined me when I was a kid, lol.

It seems like WAR would have some kind of housing, even if instanced, since there allowing you to have trophys on your character it seems as though they would want a place to collect and arrange trophys and things of that nature.. In SWG I had a house that contained every set of armor in game as well as a wall with every weapon and all of that was arranged very nice. I also remember a house in my city having a full aquarium, 10 feet tall and around 30 feet in diameter, it was a real masterpiece of creativity, someone having put it together out of misc items arranged just so.

Do you know any info on the different classes? are any classes specific for certain races?

What about the career systems.. im imagining it being like wows talent points.

I cant seem to find alot of info on the paticulars of the game just things focusing on RvR and fighting. Id apreciate it if you know of some websites or would just like to tell me yourself.. thanks already though as youve been very helpfull getting me pointed in a direction.

Also I was wondering, it sounded like you had played Age of Conan.. can you tell me why you didnt like it? was it the actual game or was it the state of the game? like I said earlier I had played vanguard when it first came out and although I felt that it had a ton of potential it was just too buggy to play, is that the kind of thing wrong with AoC?

Also anyone else viewing this thread if you know of any games where you can have player housing or even better player citys please speak up, development games are fine.

Im really hoping the Knights of the Old Republic MMO will be a sandbox game.. to be honest im really hoping for SWG 2.0 but I have a feeling im going to be let down as it will probly be just another amusement park ride. Anyone have any info on that game? I know it was only confirmed a few days ago so I dont expect anyone to know much.

  • Enzu777Enzu777 Member Posts: 27

Oh and also I forgot to ask, does anyone know any info on Lord of the Rings Online? someone mentioned I should look into it earlier and thats another game I cant find much about, although what I have found it looks just like every other MMO just prettier.

Im really looking for innovation, of any kind. Having played so many MMO's over the years even if I cant find a sandbox its still very exciting to see and do something Ive never done before.

I feel like ive really got to thank everyone whos posted trying to help me as well, especially you Bartley.. I expected to have to wait a day orso to get any replys if I got any at all, Im really looking forward to being a member of this website as ive definately seen that there is a friendly and helpfull community here, more so then any other forumn I believe ive ever been a part of. Props everyone

    Yes.

It will still look like an orc keep but ransacked and with human stuff everywhere :P

I am also looking into getting into the gaming industry as a programmer :) hopefully both of us can find our ways into a good company.

There is so much to explain i dont know where to start.

You should check out their website, and if there is anything that isn't answered there, just send me a pm and ill get back to you asap

Since Im both a LotrO and a WAR fan I guess I could give you some answers ;)

I think you will enjoy WAR and if it just get a good launch it will be very succesfull! (btw the character growing is no longer in sadly)

LotrO is pretty simillar to WoW and EQ2 (but WAR is too)... if you are a PvP player then LotrO doesnt offer much of that since its limited to one zone... The game is more casual friendly than most other games and have a more relaxed pace (no rushing to lvl cap and start rading for phat lewt)... Its more about enjoying the world and the story and there is alot of "fluff" if you like that... The world is seamles and very nice looking, there is player housing in instanced homesteads.. you can also play alot of instruments in real-time and play your own songs while hanging around the Prancing pony drinking beer :)

There is also an outfit system so you can wear cloth for cosmetics and get the stats from other gear, and its alos posible to dye your gear.... The game is very quest based so if you dont like that then maybe its not for you (but WAR is aswell).. The Epic-quests are also something that really sets this game apart from the rest.. Its polished and have a great community and get lots of new conten all the time (First expansion this fall)

Check out the 14-days free-trial and you will have something to play untill WAR releases! There is a reason why LotrO is rated number 1 on this site!

    If WoW = The Beatles
    and WAR = Led Zeppelin
    Then LotrO = Pink Floyd

  • AxumAxum Member Posts: 891

ACK..........I can't believe i totally forgot about it.

If you don't mind animeish graphics,

the closest thing you could get to a sandbox/openended mmo

    is Mabinogi

    Look into that a bit,

it could be a filler until WAR at the least
