Want player housing?

Go play The Sims. I honestly don't see why people would want to decorate a house, that has no further purpose than to be looked at.

Player housing adds a sense of immersion in an rpg, bringing along further a living breathing alternate reality we place ourselves in , and the game i play has a purpose for a house, you can do quests that give you items that give hour long buffs on yer toon for ceartain things as well as haveing my broker in my house i can cut you the cost of using the normal broker, also some of the stuff i have in my house can portal you directly to far away places, of course thse items take long quests to get, so yes there can be a purpose for player housing, one would be that it adds a dynamic to the game of an mmo that it is a living breathing world simialrity, and in my particular mmo i have stuff to use in my house to benefit myself and other players, and why ya being a troll about player housing?

In games such as UO and SWG a house was also your workshop/shop/home. A house adds to the community, for guilds n friends to have private gatherings. Also works well for storage. Having a place to store all your materials for buildin, keeping equipment for your other characters stored till they can use it.

As for a workshop, if you are a crafter, it is often a great place to have all your building equipment and supplies in one area. Such a pain when building at a station n 'Ooops...outta materials gotta run to bank'.

Also may I point out...these games are called MMORPG...the RPG stands for ROLE PLAYING GAME. If ppl want to RP as part of the world...and they have a house, the are part of the world.

Problem is gamers like the OP who think it is pointless seem to be what most MMORPGs count on. I feel a house makes you actually part of the world. When I play a MMORPG I would rather feel my character belongs as part of the world...not just a passer-by.

I'm not trolling. I was J/W why people make a fuss about it. All that stuff you mentioned could easily be worked into other places in the game world.

Why so hostile about player housing? I for one love it. Player housing is a win win situation for developers and players. For players it is a place to be creative with. It gives you a feeling that you really can manipulate and control part of the game world. Housing also gives you something productive to do when you simply do not feel like killing or crafting. Housing in EQ2 has a lot more to offer then just eye candy. Believe me EQ2 housing has function. Not all player housing does this in every game. I have also never seen forced housing in any game so if you do not want it do not get it.

How housing benefits the developer is it gives players a feeling of ownership. It makes you feel you own a piece of the game world. This feeling will keep players subscribing longer and it will make them think before they cancel the game. OP your view of housing is narrow. I think you think of it as only like a doll house. However housing can offer a lot more then that, although the decorating doll housing thing is indeed one of the fun things about housing for many. For me some kind of player housing with collectibles is almost a must. If WoW had housing and collectible items I would still be playing it. Oh, I get this every time I try to defend player housing, "Go get a real house then". For the record I have 2  in real life.

mmoRPG means its a game with RP. Player housing is great, especially when you gain trophies during your adventures and put them in your house. After years of gaming and changes you still have souvenirs of your old adventures.

But I know, wowers cant understand that.

    You're not trolling?

You start the post with "Go play The Sims".

Once upon a time player housing served many different functions. In UO for example, your house served as a place of storage (the bank was limited in how much you could store), you could set up vendors and sell goods (there was no auction halls), as a place to setup your crafting tools and make your wares (Crafted items required you to use things like a anvil, forge, loom, etc. there was no "crafting on the fly" for most professions.), and as a place to just hang out with friends.

Now it's basically just for immersion and storage.

I don't understand why some people feel more connected when they have their own house in-game. I've played UO and EQ2 and having my own space made me feel less connected. as if I was isolated from the rest of the game. But that's just my me, I wouldn't say no housing UNLESS it's done randomly and I have to walk through a player-made maze of crappy structures just to get into town and do what I need to. Then it's annoying.

I was thinking though, that to make housing slightly more interesting, you could have the housing exist already in-game built in the towns. Premium spots near the market cost more than tiny 1 room shacks on the outskirts. With new expansions, you could introduce more real estate, which would induce more people to buy the expansion. Also it would allow for new players a chance to buy.

Problems would include limiting some people from buying an entire town and jacking the rates up and such. maybe a limit to personal ownership and then if you raise a brokering skill, then you can own more properties or something. Kinda like how trading skills in Eve allow you to have more open orders.

Anyhow, just a thought. But if it was more orderly I wouldn't ind so much.

Lots of these MMO's don't have much storage.  Housing was the tool for storing extra items.  Many of these MMO's never had a mechanism for sharing items amoung the different characters on your account, housing provided the necessary means.

If you like crafting, most of the MMO's, including Wow do not have enough storage to be a steady crafter.

So for a guy, that just likes to go out and whack a bunch of creatures, housing does not make much of a difference.  But if you play other parts of the game besides that, it very much does make a difference.

I totally agree. Aside from the practical values of extra storage and having someplace to craft etc, a house gives you a sense of property. Certainly the hardcore achievers can relate to that. Personally, I just want an opportunity to build something in a place where it really matters. Even a guild hall would suffice. In fact, I'd almost prefer that, since it would seem to give more opportunities for it to actually be productive.

    1) i have nothing against housing except if developers need to put resources in it, i woudl rather have them use the same resource for quests, zones, talents ....

    2) storage can be done with a bank as shown in many games.

    3) you don't need your personal place to craft.

I think house in not necessary in any game. Perhaps a house for guild as meeting place or warehouse,  that's all. Any house are not able to compete with The Sims and its Neighborhood.

    So I agreed with OP.

WTH does 'Why are there so many WoWers?' mean? Last I recall WoW did not support player housing. So whatever you mean it clearly has no place in a topic about housing.

I tend to agree with you about housing "who cares" , but with that being said the housing in endlessages made the game alot more fun.

In endlessages you could place your house almost anywhere in the world, you could "rebirth" at your house for shorter walking distance, your house had a vault and a store. So since you lost your loot when ya died you can grab gear from the vault and run back to the fight quicker. They also had the "red" system so when you werent allowed in town having a house not in a safe zone was really a plus.

Because WOW is a good & popular game and it shows that people can have fun without playing virtual interior decorators.

And THIS is precisely why MMOrpgs should OFFER player housing.  Because there are PLAYERS of all different personalities.  I don't understand the people that BITCH about player housing.  If you don't want a freakin' house....don't BUY ONE.  Problem solved.  DUH.

So I think the OP is sort of daft to make any kind of big deal out of it.  Don't like houses....don't get one.  No biggie.

Personally, I agree with all of the "pro-player housing" people that have posted, particularly the first person that so PERFECTLY stated how useful the housing is in EQ2.  In THAT game.....you're seriously better off having a home.

However, I'm all for ANYTHING in a game that allows FREE CHOICE.  Why should we NOT have the OPTION of housing?  That's just a choice limiting decision by devs.  I prefer games that offer loads and loads of options, including.....housing.

See, the way some of us see it, using resources to diversify the game is not a waste. We think, " Why put more resources  into making more of the same quests, when you can use them to make the game more than the same leveling/questing. You used to be able to do anything in these games. Not be pigeonholed into exp grinding, questing, and raiding.

I disagree, houses can be a great place for players to meet or a place for storage.  Even so, there are many other reasons I would want player housing in a game.

I enjoy crafting a lot in my MMOs.  When it comes to games, I am tired of only making just weapons,  I want to make things like houses, boats, etc.  I just find them a great feature in MMOs.  Wurm Online is a great game if a player is loking into crafting houses.

Now, that doesn't mean if a game doesn't have player housing I won't play it.  I don't need it that bad.

You are correct about WoW. I was in closed beta and developers talk about possibly adding housing. I think when WoW got so successful so fast the developers realized they did not need housing or collectibles. I just cancelled my subscription. I played actively since closed beta. While for me the game just got boring after so much time. If it had housing and collectible I would probably still be playing. WoW showed housing is not a must to have big mmo numbers but if it had housing more would probably stay in game longer.
