Anybody who judges an MMO of this scope before the 60 day mark is either a fanboy or a hater, depending on their stance. So, WAR has until November 19th before we can say if it is good or sucky. Anybody who posts a review before then, be it positive or negative, is prematurely judging the game. It's the effectiveness of support and direction for the future that drives this genre, NOT the state of the game at launch.
That said, WAR has potential.

The hype has come through. With the NDA lifted, people will begin to understand. This game IS the messiah MMORPG players have been waiting for. We sat though years of utter garbage, and now have something worth the wait. This game is full of content, lacking in bugs, and bursting at the seams with fun. PvErs and PvPers can both find a home here. The new, experimental MMORPG elements were a success. Public quests blew away all expectations, RvR is diverse and integrated into the universe flawlessly. Performance is phenominal in high traffic areas even on a older PC. It all came through. Congrats, Mythic, you did it.
I could have sworn this was the exact same post posted on AoC's forums a month before it's release. The only changes would be that you'd refer to Funcom, not Mythic. See what I'm getting at?
This MMORPG is anything but experimental. I think fans and haters would agree.
The difference is this actually is right this time. This game is fun and will most likely put a significant dent in the WoW playerbase within a year.
Sure it is... we'll see at release and let's hope for the best. The thing is you can't do anything right now other then "hope" it will be a good game, as it hasn't been released yet. No, it is not right this time. It may as well be, but we don't know yet, so it's an indefinite answer.

Right, but this game is different. Spend one hour with it and you will see it's no AoC. There is not a quest in game that is bugged. The biggest complaints about the game are things like paper doll inventory issues and cloaks that clip with armor. This game is the real deal, it's not for everyone, but there has never been an MMO launch with this type of content and polish. This game is lightyears ahead of AoC and is more polished and has 10x more content than WoW did at launch.

You can judge a game almost immediately, or at least I can. It took me 10 minutes in WoW to know that it would be a huge success that I'd enjoy, same with WAR, and those judgements held out.
In AoC, Guild Wars, LotRO, EQ1, et al it took that long to know that something was wrong.
The things I am looking for, and I believe this applies to many others, would have to be immediately obvious if they existed at all.

That initial judgment would not last if the companies failed to support the games. Tabula Rasa, for example, was a good game at launch that never got any support. AoC for example, was a good game at launch that got changed in ways that undermined the parts that drew people in. Hellgate London started off incomplete and got worse from there. Vanguard did not improve fast enough to keep up with the fanbase's expectations.
Support is the key. Yeah, you can tell if the game is playable when it comes out, but not much else. To really see if it will succeed as an MMO, you have to see what direction the company is going with it. That takes at least 2 months.

I think you are talking about expansions, or something like that, which is way down the road. I'm talking about what is already in the box. It is unlikely that the experience I had from the start and through all the considerable /played time would suddenly pull a 180, and for the worse, at some random point in the game.
I think that the direction is going to be quite consistent till (at least) well past the endgame. I've seen exactly zero (0) indications or warning signs that the direction of the game will change any time soon.

I'm not talking about expansions. I'm talking about patches. WAR could have an awesome launch but if they say... delete a whole faction two months after launch (extreme example I admit)... then the game will be trash.

I've been playing MMO's since 2000 and there's only 2 game launches I can remember that have been reletively bug free - WoW and Lineage2.
I'm not expecting WAR to roll out the door in a near perfect state, infact I'm expecting a plethora of bugs. It's how Mythic react to those bugs that mattters and a big part of that is communication with the community. Mythic, with EA's backing know how big the stakes are.
It's not about how many boxes they sell in the first 4 weeks, they have one to two months grace before WotLK hits him like a cruise missile and can only counter it by retaining subs.

I agree with you Souldrainer. MMOs take some time post launch to really pick up. Some are better at release than others and there's no real formula for it.
Gazentia, you would be completely wrong about success meaning a game is good. Many good games aren't successes like WoW. It's a personal preference and a choice tbh. And you'd be completely wrong about LOTRO. When it started, yeah it was bland. However, Turbine released so many content patches that LOTRO is, imo, the BEST second gen MMO around. Much better than WoW in many ways and is everything that WoW promised but never truly delivered in its entirety, which is to cater to casual players.
And even if you don't particularly like LOTRO, it has become, without a shadow of a doubt, the most diverse of the 2cnd gen MMOs with a slowly growing population.
Popularity and financial success does not equate to a good game. For all the money Blizzard makes, they put surprisingly little back into the game. Compared to Turbine, with 9.7 million LESS players (source of income), they put in huge content patches every few months. Those content patches are REAL content patches where 99% of the patch notes are about actual content and not bug fixes, class balance etc.
How good a game is/will become, depends on developer support post launch.

I tried LotRO recently, once more. I am sorry to say that it was still bland and had no hook at the early levels. If it gets better at the end game, I don't know or care. Not a lot of people are going to play through 50 levels waiting for the game to get better. WAR and WoW immediately hook players which is crucial.

That's true I forgot about that one. It was totally problem free for me.
