What girls be attracted to

MitaraMitara Member UncommonPosts: 755

Would girls be attracted to Sci-fi style of gaming? We know that the sci-fi movie industry is huge compared to the adventure, which is why many developers now are wondering if that could work in mmo's as well.

But the question is, with 45% women player MMO's would they like a Sci-fi mmo?

Honestly, I would not know what my opposite would like, but I would have figured sci-fi would be much larger in percentage than lets say, fantasy. Sci-fi demands a bit more mature audience, which women tend to gravitate more towards (sorry guys, but we are the immature ones  ). But I think it really depends on how the MMO content within the game is created. EVE is sci-fi but I would not think many women would play because of the nature of how EVE plays. So I am going to stay netural on this subject.

    Edit: sentence cohesion/structure

MMOs Played: I can no longer list them all in the 500 character limit.

A game where all the male toons are wearing Sketchers.

    Or Axe body wash.

CH, Jedi, Commando, Smuggler, BH, Scout, Doctor, Chef, BE...yeah, lots of SWG time invested.

I would say...maybe yes because lost or most of them are sanboxes and...ya I played one of those sci-fi sandboxes (SWG in NGE BLEK!) and.....ya my FL was full of female gamers and ya.... I AM NO..what's it called?....errr.......Woman's Boy?....nah that dosen't make sense. Oh well w/e it is I am not that! Oh ya! a transexual! NO WAY IN HELL!

eRR...BUT WHY DO YOU WISH TO KNOW?.....oops caps...I'm too lazy to change it, deal with it.

  • MitaraMitara Member UncommonPosts: 755

I wanna know, cause sci-fi used to be a nerd thing that no girl would hear about and I think that has changed today. So many successful films like the new Batman are in a futuristic world setting and they sell well.

You know this is a funny thing about me. I love sci fi movies,  I have a very high tech home, environmental controls, computers running everything, high tech materials,  i love my blue gas sculptures, holographic tiles, bubble light walls,  and light up everything. I decorate in modern industrial minimalism... but yet I can't stand to play sci fi mmos.. lol I like fantasy based ones, or historical.  I don't like flying ships, fighting with laser blasters or light sabers.. it just doesn't do the trick for me. I can't stand anything tech or mech when playing games. I would prefer a game where I am in the wilderness left with a pocket knife and have to  build and make everything myself  then use everything I make to kill everyone I see, but instead of shooting them or blasting them I want to tear them apart with my bare hands or whip them or  beat the snot out of them with my 5 inch heels .. now that sounds more like something I would want to play, but hey that is just one girls opinion.....

YES! i would love to be able to remove my stiletto's and proceed to stab somebody with them

and though i am a female, i love sci-fi. always have. but its hard to find a decent sci-fi mmo.

i like eve, as do most who get into it.

but i'd really like to see a good game where you actually have legs and can get off your ship and do some hand to hand combat, too

regardless, imo, the fantasy theme is way overused, and getting a little tired.

I am a guy, but am similar in that I like sci-fi movies and use technology around the home extensively. I also agree that I would rather play the game you describe than a Sci-Fi MMO game.

MMO = fantasy, FPS = modern day warfare and RTS = Fantasy, Modern Warfare or SciFi

Again, the cool chicks aren't from WA state. :)

Yes and no but I do know alot more girls that are into Stargate, Star Trek, Star Wars, Dune then girls that are in Lord of the ring, World of Warcraft, Warhammer.

Sci-Fi is not always as dark as medieval and fantasy. I know alot of girls will be playing Star Trek and Stargate.

Then again... I hang out with girls that are hardcore Quake, Unreal Tournament and Doom 3 players.

Well this girl likes sci-fi.  I have read Asimov, Clake, Saberhagen, Bradbury, well you get the idea, since I was a little girl.  I played AO and loved it until the screwed it up with Shadowlands.

I hope someone will come up with a good Sci-fi MMO.

Oh by the way Star Wars was not Sci-fi, it was fantasy.

Star wars is listed as sci fi on this site. .. and when i googled star wars this came up for the wiki summary:

"Star Wars is an epic Science Fiction franchise initially conceived by George Lucas during the 1970s and significantly expanded since that time. The first film in the franchise was simply titled Star Wars, but later had the subtitle A New Hope added to distinguish it from its sequels and prequels. Star Wars was released on May 25, 1977 by 20th Century Fox, and became a worldwide pop culture phenomenon, initially spawning two sequels."

Though it may not fit into your definition of science fiction, it is accepted so by the rest of the world.  The definition of words is determined by what the world thinks they mean, therefore the definitions change, not the rest of the world.

  • LeasaLeasa Member Posts: 449

I dont mean to start an argument. However what the popular press may think and reality are sometimes different.

John Campbell who is accepted as the father of modern Sci-Fi had a definition of Sci-Fi that said if you can see a path from here to there it is Sci-Fi.  Campbell helped Issac Asimov and many other budding authors with their stories.

So regardless what others may think Star Wars was not Sci-fi.  I will stick with Campbell's definition.

Sci-Fi is just fantasy with technology based advancements dictating society anyway.

I think we tend to think of Fantasy as something that could have occured in the past (before humans took over the earth and forgot about magic) versus some futuristic type setting.

Star Wars took place in the past, but in a galaxy that was ahead of ours in technology. So I can see how it could be categorized either way.

If they arent lore enthusiasts, or geeks, they will play any genre as long as it is easy to pick up really. There arent many hardcore girl gamers, and hardcore girl gamer is a totally different thing from hardcore guy.

What? Is this game set in some kind of futuristic kitchen or something?
  • RAWRGRAWRG Member Posts: 105

Well, hardcore girl gamers are in my mind rare, because I've met maybe 5 of them that didn't later turn out to be guys... but in terms of the female gamer group in general, I've heard this stated. Men like things being built and exploding, while women like forming relationships and manipulating them. Obviously these are very broad descriptions, but basically it's my belief that to get the women involved you need to come up with character depth and interaction. That's what pulls the female crowd behind Battlestar Galactica.

I threw a vote for yes here because my wife doesn't really use this site but she is tired of fantasy MMOs and looking for changes and really wants a SciFi one.

She kind of jumps around lately but SWG was her favorite, she still likes it now but really liked the old world it was.

LMAO! I do not think that I am odd, nor do I think that it is odd to like games that are the opposite of what you surround yourself with.  We live in a high tech world, so it is perfectly normal to want to retreat back to simpler times. It is like this,  when you take a vacation do you want to go somewhere that looks just like where you are everyday? well mmos are kinda like a mini vacation from what you are surrounded with. Kinda like having the best of both worlds. I may be a freak, but this isn't a discussion on my bedroom habits.  I love shows like stargate and I even own the borg series but like when I want to relax and have fun I would rather get away from all the tech stuff and get back to the primative.* even a girls inner beast has needs to!* HAHAHA!

Why would you say this?  I think it's entirely possible to like a certain genre in some mediums and completely dislike it in another.  For instance, I would see no problem in wanting to have the latest technology in your home to make your life easier and also enjoying a good sci-fi movie if it's a good story.  But at the same time, interacting in a sci-fi world just might not be your thing.  I think your criticism is an uneducated one.

  • ketrineketrine Member Posts: 285

I am a female, and I enjoy Sci-Fi genre games.  I do not enjoy Eve's "you ARE the spaceship" style.  I really did like SWG back before they changed it to resemble another unmentionable game.  The difference between Sci-Fi and Fantasy genres is simple.  They are both similar in that what happens within those contexts doesn't happen in the day-to-day world.  They are unlike in that Sci-Fi uses technological advancement as the basis for its outlandish parts, and Fantasy uses magic in much the same way.

So in short - yes.  Girls  Sci-Fi.

Star Wars is a good example of fantasy with a SF skin.

Star Trek is more SF, but has a lot of not quite within the realm of known science features.  Faster than light travel and matter teleportation are just two examples.  But Star Trek isn't fantasy with an SF skin the way Star Wars is, where no pretense of a basis in known or projected technology is implied.
