WAR copied WoW?

"Games Workshop, who designed the World of Warhammer back in 1983, took many ideas and impression from the work of Tolkien, as well as other European influence. The game Warhammer, while it has a dark under tone, has always had a little sense of humor. The art from the 80s was cartoonish, yet dark.

Mythic, in keeping with the basic art concept establish by Games Workshop, began to use their model and art that is nearly 25 years old to make the model for the MMOG. While the color texture may appear similar to WoW, the model design of the Dwarf and Orc is within the traditional style of Games Workshop's creation that has been around since 1983. The only similarity of the 2 games is truly that it shares the same level of color texture. The only game Mythic is copying is the work that has been in place by the artist that had worked for Games Workshop.

It is said that Blizzard tried to license Warhammer from Games Workshop back during the development of the original Warcraft. For whatever reason, the deal fell through. Instead of scratching the project, Blizzard made some modifications to the graphics and art, created their own backstory, and called it Warcraft, their own new IP."

We had explained this fact for months and still we have the people posting here saying the opposite (WAR copied from WoW).

I think Mythic learned several stuff from WoW (the good stuff).  The UI, for example, reminds me more to WoW than DAoC.  It's not bad to copy the good stuff.

I think most of the combat system is a new adaptation of DAoC's than from any other game... just my opinion, of course.

The lore, the graphics, all the rest... is based in Warhammer universe like as you just proved again was created way before Warcraft (who actually seems to "copied" from Warhammer).

I wish you had post this in my rant thread so I could joke about the people coming here saying otherwise hehe  ;)

Anyway, you know that as soon as you posts get out of the top... someone will post that WAR copied this or that from WoW

Btw... after seeing videos and graphics from WoW (to remember how it was... long time I dont log in it)... I can say that, imo, WAR Graphics are much better than WoWs.

Accordingly to Mythic (in their pod casts and such) GW had to approved all the classes, graphics and such.  It was part of the agremeent.  Which I think it's good for the fans of the Warhammer universe.

Um , no World of Warcraft stole certain art from the warhammer board game , such as the orc ensignia, so no WAR didnt steal stuff from WoW , WoW stole it from WAR.

truth about what? LOL in all honesty there is no possible response to this thread other than a good old "Get a life" seriously, this has been discussed for over a YEAR now, and who gives a $%it about if WAR copied WoW or WoW copied WAR, do you really think that is gonna even come to my mind when im trying out WAR? or when i tried out WoW(yes this was brought up with WoW as well)?

"yes this game looks fantastic but on the other hand they copied the art style from somewhere so im not gonna play it" give it a rest no one cares (besides you!).

Well yes and no, Warhammer has taken a lot of stuff from World of Warcraft (Visual, have not played the game myself). However you have to realise this is how MMO's are being made. WoW on itself is not really special and inovating and has taken these ideas from other MMO's and improved it. Just with the development of every product, it is an evolution. The product slowly get "better" and more suited to the costumers standards, with the rare inovating product giving the evolution a big boost.

You can not expect many inovating games coming out (especialy not mainstream games), just look at darkfall. Poeple thing that game could be inovating and such, but I do disagree as there is a game out there with is like Darkfall (but released :P) called Wurms online. True it does not look as good as Darkfall is supposed to look like.

So did war copy WoW....no it did not. If it did there would have been an lawsuit about copyright it is as simply as that. Just becouse a car looks like a car, does not mean it is a copy of an other car, it will most likely drive differand. Did Warcraft copy from WoW, yes it might have been inspired by it, however with time Warcraft have been given an life of it's own and WoW is not even close to the Warhammer IP anymore and beside that...WoW has 9 million to 10 million subscribers...for the investors it is all about the money. So why make a game 100% differand to WoW, while you could make a game with has a lot from WoW, but better?

WoW has 10milion subscribers? 9Million was proven to be false as they are counting the trial accounts and the chinese who use them.

Blizzard is worse than EVE Online about inflating its subscription numbers with trial accounts. You think the chinese farmers ,pay for a real account? They might have a couple big item accounts and stuff. The rest are free trials the sweatshop demands they use!

    Did WAR copy WoW...

    For the hundredth time... No.

Warcraft, the IP, was created from the remains of a deal Blizzard was working out with Games Workshop to make a game based on Warhammer. They changed some details, altered the look a bit and called it Warcraft.

This is explained, and not difficult to find with a simple Google search. As someone mentioned earlier, Blizzard themselves acknowledged this.

The look/style of the artwork in Warhammer - the look of the orcs, goblins, etc. etc. is straight from the Warhammer canon. I remember seeing those orcs and goblins and such years ago when I'd go to comic and gaming stores and see the books.

On all accounts, Warhammer predates Warcraft and this is brought to bear when you get into the "did one MMO copy from the other" bit...

As for whether WAR the MMO is a clone of WoW the MMO... again... No.

For one, there are *too many people* who still seem to believe - all these years later - that somehow Blizzard invented the MMO genre. They did not. Other MMOs had several years' head start on them. I say this because there are some who believe that simply by virtue of being a MMO, it's automatically a WoW clone.

Next, the whole "well their interfaces are the same, so they stole the interface". No, they did not... that basic interface had been around in other games pre-dating WoW as well.. that includes the hotbar(s), mini-map/compass in top-right corner, skill trees, etc. etc. (see Asheron's Call 2, for one example). WoW just happened to be the first MMO most people became familiar with to use it.

The whole "well the graphics styles are too similar... so they clearly stole that from WAR"

Wrong again... Like I said earlier, the art style used is representative of the style used by Games Workshop themself for Warhammer... which Blizzard later came long and basically altered to create Warcraft.

The "WoW clone" thing might hold water with other games... but with Warhammer, it's simply not so. As others have said.. it is quite the other way around.

If not for Warhammer, it's possible Warcraft would have never existed.. at least not as we know it today.

It only takes a few keystrokes and mouse clicks to look up the history of BOTH games.

WoW is still at around 5mil at best subscribers and many of those are not legit. I would bet real cash on it.

The guys that made the Warhammer and Warhammer 40k universe had a time machine, they went to the future, looked at SC and WC and stole the ideas, came to the past and made their games!

They ripped off SC and WC universe!!!!!! Blizzard has always being original and full of original and never heard before ideas!

Pulling random numbers out of your ass is making you look rather foolish, you should stop.

I do admit however that the two games look quite similar but that WAR copied WoW, highly doubt it. There is simply no need, they have a plethora of art at their disposal courtesy of Games Workshop.

Do you honestly believe they are using trial accounts for farming?  Sorry, it doesn't work that way.  All of the trial accounts I know of have a level 20 cap, can't use the AH, and can't send/receive anything in the mail.  It's silly to suggest people are actually farming on those accounts.

In the light of the Blizzard/Glider dance, this seems more direct, and would only happen in China: Gold farmers were arrested and charged with "unfair revenue distribution". More info at PlayNoEvil:

Turn up the Irony Meter to 11. After all, with all of the complaints in the US about gold farming, it takes the Chinese to stand up and do something about it.

Yep, police in China has arrested 2 men for running a World of Warcraft gold farming operation and charged them with "unfair revenue distribution" (CHINESE READER ALERT - what in the world is "unfair revenue distribution"?).

The two men ran the operation for 7 months and earned 1.4 Million RMB (just over US$200,000). They had 20 computers and 20 employees (no shifts, I guess) and were based in Chengdu's Shuangliu county. The men were targeting The9's China-based World of Warcraft operation... I'm not sure if this makes their revenue more impressive or not.

I'm just saying the games look very similar, its a personal opinion based on my having played WoW and my having played WAR CB. To me the games look very similar with textures, colours, models.

You are still missing my point.

The trial accounts are used to advertise in safety of getting their main accounts banned. the Inflated trial accounts that all the sweatshops and more than half of asia use are counted as subscribers by Blizzard.

Majority are gold sellers and second and third accounts for when players fought their own teams in arenas to get S3.
