The last PUBLISHED total numbers were:

10.9 million ACTIVE subscribers world wide. This is the last published source (based an AUDITED financial reports from Vivendi Corp (a stock market noted Cy).

    Source: http://www.vivendi.com/corp/en/press_2008/20080724_Vivendi_Reports_First_Half_2008_Revenues.php

DATE: July 24th 2008. Two months after release of AoC

    Definition of an active subscriber:

    World of Warcraft's Subscriber Definition

World of Warcraft subscribers include individuals who have paid a subscription fee or have an active prepaid card to play World of Warcraft, as well as those who have purchased the game and are within their free month of access. Internet Game Room players who have accessed the game over the last thirty days are also counted as subscribers. The above definition excludes all players under free promotional subscriptions, expired or cancelled subscriptions, and expired prepaid cards. Subscribers in licensees' territories are defined along the same rules.

The last confirmed subscribers base divided in US/EU were:

US more than 2.5 million subscribers

EU more than 2 million subscribers

Asia moren than 5.5 million subscribers

So as Vivendi is a stock market noted International company which has to publish financial reports under strict law of publishing (these reports are published under an audited form).... there are 2 possibilities.

OR Blizard has indeed these kinds of income through the published subscriptions, OR Vivendi/blizzard is into some illegal Columbian drug dealing to come to these BILLION dollars income.

---> Interesting side note: Russian EU servers only went live in August 2008, and they needed to install already 10 new servers (starting from 3). That's roughly 100K already.

They pay per hour. So if you want to play 15 cents per hour. Go ahead and subscribe to a Chinese version of WOW.

Could you try to make a reliable source?. Most of this data is months old, you know.

There is only one thing that realy bugs me about WoW PVP, everyone on a PVP realm should have PVP flag turned on as soon as they ding max level and make it unable to turn off, I don't care about the litle levels, sometimes it's nice just to be able to watch some duels outside without beeing one shoted by an oportunist rogue.

But then, dueling could become a problem too, hmmm, maybe if we could get some arena like areas in major citys where it's safer to duel... or something like that.

Well: compare it to your hyped WAR then.
You kill the NPC King of the ONE existing capitol (after having fought over the same lay-out Keeps for days) and you recycle the same over again.
Why redo the conquering of the one capitol you already conquered?
Perhaps that's why there is also PVE in Wow :))).

PvE is the exact same thing only worse.  There have been World NPCs killable for honor since the honor system was introduced. Guess how many players go and kill them. Guess how much of a big deal adding a few gimmick rewards is going to make. Your reward for playing WoW is loot. Plain and simple.

Vault-Tec analysts have concluded that the odds of worldwide nuclear armaggeddon this decade are 17,143,762... to 1.

Really these are things we should have seen years ago but now there's finally a game that's made them do something about WoW's PvP.
