WAR will not fail, because is a already good game, and will need absolutelly horrible changes to make it a bad game.

But WAR is not addictive, so you will need others MMOS *anyway*, even If WAR sucess and you are in.  I suggest could be a good idea to try some F2P games.   Maybe ryzom, atlantica online, air rivals...  maybe try a different gente: FPS, something like BF2 or Frontlines. There will be soon a few singleplayer games, like Diablo 3, starcarft 2, fallout 3. ... theres ZERO originality on these games, as you can see are <something> <number>, but anyway will be well crafted, of high quality, so will be good games.   AION will release soon, theres another good game.

PC gaming is dying.. so maybe PC gamers sould let the open source and freeware community have more players. Saubretaun seems very high on Xfire.  Tremulous is a very good game. Army of Earth has ben show in the frontpage of Fileplanet.  Maybe gamers have to download more of that open source games, and the mod community evolve to a open source game making community.   Console have clones most PC features, but console games are still dumbeddown crap.  So PC gaming is diing, because the devs have moved to consoles. The ones that stay are few, and sparce. Something has to be made now.    MMORPG games are still alive, because is hard to make then for consoles (and is hard to update a game for console, because all the autoritative microsoft /sony/nintendo crap)  but is like a isle in a land of destruction. Everywhere else, PC gaming is dyiing, or mortally wounded.

I really wasn't that bothered about WAR up until recently.

Having played many MMOs and had varying sucess and addictions to them all, WAR just wasnt on my radar.

When you've been playing EQ2 on/off for 4 years, i wondered what all the hype was surrounding other MMOs, especially with EQ2 being seriously underestimated and overlooked by too many people.  IMHO its the most complete and visually satisfying MMO out there.

But the closer WAR gets to release, and having got a tiny taster in PW, I can say Im really looking forward to it.  Mythic know how to do MMOs and so long as they dont fail on the basics, the fundamentals of what a fantasy MMO is all about, the game should succeed.

Built for RvR is the key thing, like DAoC (damn i've even resubscribed and been playing a bit of that to kill some MMO time waiting for WAR).

I just hope further down the line there's a FFA pvp server, but maybe there won't be as simply I cant see how it will work given how the RvR mechanics are.

WAR won't fail hopefully and SOE won't be seeing my cash again for a while, probably...

It won't fail. I'm absolutely positive it, everything I've seen from Mythic is leagues better than the dedication towards the game we saw from Funcom.

The other thing these days is - there's no loyalty or patience with MMOs that arent mustard from day one.

Years back when there were only 2 or 3 options, you had no choice but to remain loyal and be patient whilst the game was continually developed and expanded after release.

These days, we all want things instantly and if something doesn't make the grade out the box, we give the developers very little time to sort it, and probably rightfully so.  Why should we be paying for unfinished products - you wouldnt go buy a new car that hadn't been painted and polished would you!

So failure of games like AoC, Vanguard etc the developers and publishers are the ones to blame.

WAR looks to be a game where it'll be releases when its done, not under pressure from a greedy publisher who ultimately shoots themselves in the foot by giving the developer a deadline and cutting the budget.

If you don't know what you want from an MMO then it may be the case that WAR fails to deliver. I think it will be successful for a lot of people that want exactly what WAR is offering - Reward based RvR.

All this "ZOMG BUGS!" whining is getting old. Why do people play CoX? Why do people play Ryzom? Hell, why did people play FoM? Because they found the game that met their requirements. WAR is offering to meet a LOT of peoples requirements, there will always be whiney ass 'I WANT A PERFECT GAME BUT I DONT KNOW WHAT I WANT IT TO DO' idiots and they will happily donate £30 towards the game the rest of us will be happy to play.

then all the people would go back to wow and the decent people would stay in warhammer.

  • This certainly sounds awesome. Me and my guildies were climbing up walls when we read this! My only worry like you is I won't have enough time for WAR!

But I dont think WAR will suck, since its focused on pvp/rvr. with the current PvE climate of MMOs, including WoW, where PvE is imo too easy, Pvp is what is not.
You cant dumb down other players(well WoWers have been )

Vanguard sucks hard. i not trying to flame but it is horrible.

You stole that line from Carrie Fisher! Thief!

That said, if WAR tanks (I don't have the slightest worry that it will) I'm pretty much done with MMOs for the foreseeable future. I'll just put my head down and grind out OT IRL and try to retire before I hit 70. I MIGHT make it for 65 ATM but the portents aren't wonderful.

I find it hard to see how they could mess it up from here, but it's not impossible.

If it does go that way, I guess I'm done with MMOs. This is my final shot.

Aion, Stargate, Champions, BioWare MMO, and the next City of Games are the titles I am keeping an eye open for atm.

It felts like I still look in too many directions, at too many MMOs...but their spacing and the fact most won't hold my interest long...oh well, we will see...that's assuming I don't have too many things to focus on in RL (hopefully, it will be the case). :)

Not at all dude im looking forward to those as well...but for some reason Stargate lost my interest and i hate asian games (love japanese anime tho). So the game I acually am waiting for wont even be in open beta for like a year or more   :(. the closiest games till release tho are prob fallen earth and Dark fall. And thats about 8 months if im lucky till release :*(...Like i said my last hope for MMO's for the next 2 years are mythic lmao.

And the last thing i wanna play is fuckin WOW...Id rather tickle a rhino's asshole then to play my damn holy pally again ><

    what going back to?

eve online is an ongoing side game no matter what else i'm playing.  still have a few $5 time cards for ncsoft, from when compusa went out of business (down the road from me).

considering doing a lifetime to lotro, in case it ever gets to where i enjoy it.

wotlk is coming out soon, the wife still plays wow, i'm sure it'll be a good 30-45 days of something to do.

there's always the chance that another game will get to where it's at the "fun" stage and i'll jump onto that game again.

could we please get correspondent writers and moderators, on the eve forum at mmorpg.com, who are well-versed on eve-online and aren't just passersby pushing buttons? pretty please?

Yea because WAR is way more fun that WoW.  I don't think WAR will have the same mass apeal as WoW.  I mean there are people on wow who have never even played a computer game in their life before they picked up wow, because it's so simple and easy (dumbed-down) to play.

    /rolleyes

More like because their friends/family swore up and down that it was an awesome game, and it runs on almost any computer. From a technical standpoint it's one of the highest quality MMO releases ever. That's why it's still on top. And no, I'm not a fanboy, I haven't subbed to WoW in well over a year. I'm just not afraid to say it like it is.

Heh no its dumbed down...If 80% of all WoW players decided to quit WoW and try a game like EVE or SWG (pre cu) they would quit in about a week cause of difficulty.... I mean before fucken WoW there was no ( or very low amount) of kiddies playing. And that reason is because its simplistic. Which is fine but personally i like CHALLENGE not endless "endgame" grinds...another example is comparing something as simple as crafting, any retard can craft in WoW, try comparing the crafting in SWG which is like 3 years older then WoW. WoW was fun while it lasted but all there doing now is restarting the game every damn expansion making a year+ of hardwork meaningless. No thx, grats to the peeps that do enjoy it tho.

AoC really proved you can't judge an MMORPG based on the early levels. Quality can go completely down hill with a bad development team and rushed launch.

However, reportedly Mythic has put great care in assuring that the quantity and quality of content is consistent through the entire level progression at launch.

I really enjoyed the game during the preview weekend, so at least I feel I'm over the first hurddle. Things look very promising.

If it doesn't turn out to "be my thing" after a few months? LotRO Mines of Moria expansion would probably be my next hope. A few other possibilities. Always something around the bend in this genre.

Whether you personally enjoy the game or not is immaterial. Hell, I can't stand to even look at the game anymore. I am basing my evaluation of the game from a technical standpoint. The game will run on practically anything. There's rarely serious lag problems anymore, the game is highly polished, serious bugs get addressed more quickly than in almost every other game, the tooltips explain almost everything in the game very clearly and the various UI elements are easy to navigate. This is not dumbed down; it's intuitive and accessible and as I said earlier, this is why WoW is and will probably remain king. As far as MMOs go, it's a Ferrari for the price of a Honda Civic. That's why it's still untouchable, and all the MMO shovelware that has been released in recent years has failed to gain traction with the market.

This genre wouldn't be so full of absolute garbage if gamers and developers alike understood the real reason so many people still play WoW. I believe Mythic are the first in a long time to have a grasp on this concept so the next couple months should be interesting.

I strongly believe that WAR will be a successful MMO so no worries there. However, if I somehow lose interest or decide not to play anymore for whatever reason, then I guess the only other option is the next WoW expansion unfortunately. Atleast until something better comes out...

War is an ok PVE game. The only problem is thats not what they are promising. For those ignorant of what good rvr is..it may take them a while to realize there is not much  good rvr in the game. For those wanting to jump into the next hyped game...it will satisfy..until the next hyped game comes out.
