It's pretty obvious. I've never seen this much whining about graphics before. In fact, the vast majority of gamers I talk to, from FPS players to RTS, all of them value gameplay far above graphics. The only logical explanation is that they're simply the same old vaportrolls with a different face.
That may be true in some cases. Especially those who, as stated above, make ridiculous comparisons such as comparing the graphics to EQ1 or the like. That is just plain idiocy and obvious trolling.
However, anyone who claims Graphics are totally irrelevant is just the other side of the same medal. If graphics were totally irrelevant, we'd all be playing MUD's instead of MMO's. Much more freedom in those and no wasted power on Graphics at all!
Graphics are important, because they create an atmosphere and they let you experience the world. If they just feel plain -wrong- to some people, then that is their opinion and you can't well dismiss that because that opinion is just as valid as yours.
Cheers!
MUDs have no graphics at all. Obiously I agree to an extent. 2D games will be destined to fail.
Darkfall is not one of those, not even close. There is absolutely no reason for whining. This further reinforces my point that the so-called "graphics whiners" are merely Vaportrolls looking for new shit they can rub on Darkfall fans.
Personally, I think unrealistic and old-style graphics can, more often than not, be part of the reason a game is so succesful. Emphasis on "unrealistic".
An example, FF9. One of my favorite games, and still just as playable today as it ever was. The graphics aren't even close to realistic, and aren't even close to today's standards, but that's part of it's charm, IMO. The backgrounds of the game, though in 2D, are amazingly beuatiful nonetheless.
A better example would be Warcraft-3 and WoW. It's unrealistic, cartoonish style of graphics was much praised and IMO was a big factor in it's sucess. FFXI and Star Wars Galaxies, which both released at the same time as WoW, failed, despite having better graphics.
And as someone mentioned earlier, Runescape. It's graphics are some of the worst I've seen in any 3D game, but have their charm nonetheless.. It's quests and full-loot wilderness PvP system are above average, though it's point-and-click gameplay left much to be desired.
Yet I played runescape happily for over a year. A game does not need to have Crysis-level graphics to be fun, immersive, or commercially succesful.
In fact, in my opinion, over-realistic graphics can more often than not be a turn-off.

FFXi didnt fail... it has 500k subs still
SWg had less because it was very buggy, it failed because of the Cu and NGE
I've never commented on this game, and admittedly looked into it very little at all. But I did just check out the latest video posted. If they can do it all that is in that video, I'll play it. I played UO when it first came out, text-based MUDs, and early Everquest. I'm definitely more for what's shown in that video than what the big mainstream games deliver.
Probably in the minority of the new wave of mmo players no doubt, but this definitely appeals to me.
The only other possible MMO that even comes close to piquing my interest is the World of Darkness MMO that CCP is working on, and won't be out for quite some time.
Yes, the particle/explosion/etc. effects are definitely cheesy, but I can live with that if the gameplay itself is as cool as is shown in the video. If it's not, oh well, not like it can do any worse than recent MMOs that are, in my humble opinion, garbage.
I'm the type that when I hear things like, "Oblivion is the best game ever!" I shudder. Yes, the initial WOW graphics-ness hit me for the first bit, then I realized how shallow and boring it was.
I can live with something subpar super insane, bring-computers-to-their-knees graphics, in exchange for gameplay, as well as huge battles that don't require downgrading graphics just to see them.
We'll see though how it turns out, it doesn't matter either way to me really. Though it would be nice to see something unique rather than the same standard boredomfest mold that everyone is copying now, or barely deviating from.

Lets compare whats comparable, so Darkfall is in alpha stage since the beta didn't began, ok. Lets take the last uber graphic wise MMo of the year and let compare
Thats the only alpha stage video i found on youTube of Warhammer:
In pre beta stage graphism and anims have a lot of problems, its something normal. Also when War delivered their beta coming video they really really skiped the ingame footage, we know why. Now was it good or not is not revealant after all, its just what they want to do and for whom they did their game.

Darkfall has been in Beta for a long while (according to the Dev's). What's coming now is only Open Beta. Just thought I'd point that out.
Let's get real here. There is NO WAY that Darkfall could function with large battles and static seige events with AoC-type graphics. I think after 7 years this development team, which obviously has talent, could have come up with better graphics if they chose to. I will gladly sacrifice from incredible graphics to decent graphics if the game runs smoothly and fairly lag-free. But there is no way this game can do all they want it to do with top of the line graphics, no way. It's amazing enough that it is 100% skill-based and has such a large world map. I'm glad the graphics are as good as they are. They aren't much below Elder Scrolls: Oblivion, and those were just fine for me.
QFT. AoC itself proves that mixing high-level graphics with heavy instancing and more than 40 characters on-screen equals a recipe for a crappy game with unplayable lag.
i don't understand the graphics complaints either. only SOME of the scenes, SOME of the animations and SOME of the spell effects need a little work, the world, scenery, and full dynamic shadows are absolutely stunning.... the tree branches blow in the fucking wind for fuck's sake...

Here we go, people already making excuses for why it looks so craptastic. Let's see, it needs to have craptastic graphics so more people can fit on the screen at one time without lag?
That's good reasoning......
8 years ago I can remember 200+ players gathering in the center of Emain to have an all out battle royal. The game was DAoC. Anyone who played this game knows that huge battles were waged with many times being 100+ players at once. Sure some people may have lagged during this era of gaming, I never did. I did of course keep my PC on the cutting edge as I still do almost a decade later. Anyway, DF could have MUCH better graphics and STILL be able to push hundreds of characters models on one screen.
Take WAR for example, I am no WAR fan, (I used to be until the took out cities and took away the only class I wanted to play in essence making it WoW revised 2.0 but that not the issue here) I will bet you see hundreds of players duke it out in that game. <Mod edit>

Grafik is not as important as a good gameplay. So for me it doesent matter if the grafik is good or not and if you look at darkfall screenshots you will see that in this case the grafik is fu***in awesome.Hopefully the gameplay is too.
Look at Runescape. It may still be a browser game but it just recently broke the world record for most popular free MMORPG of all time. Hell it even has over 200k active subscriptions. It brings in millions a month. I don't know why people say graphics matter so much.
But whats your question?
Oh grafics lol, i dont see any problem here it looks fine to me.
With most have good rig,s these days Darkfall will look much better then most mmo's out there.
And if you comepare it to games that are similar to darkfall like shadowbane or AC it looks far better then those games.
The LATEST video was made at very low settings on a medium pc, to show its posible to play on wide range of PC'S low end, high end.
Games played:AC1-Darktide'99-2000-AC2-Darktide/dawnsong2003-2005,Lineage2-2005-2006 and now Darkfall-2009..... In between WoW few months AoC few months and some f2p also all very short few weeks.
All you need in a good mmoRPG is great gameplay deep huge number of choises in skills ,addictive character customazation /skil/talent system decent graphicks and good animations...
GAMEPLAY is the a-z guys and its whats damn misisng so much
This topic has been beaten to death...but i still dont get how people can still raise the posibility that this video could have been faked. It is just so far fetched that even raising the possibility is just a waste of time.
This may require some *gasp* thinking and a little faith...but i want to point out 1 thing about the video.
Before the video came out, Devs had explained that when a player was brought down to 0 health they would go into this knockedout state where they could be finished off or rezzed or just looted etc and i think even have the option to end it themselves.
this is just one insignificant feature amoung many, and no one really was thinking about it when talking about the video before it came out. yet we see it very cleary in the video. So think about it....why would DF make it a point to have this in the video if it was just faked. this is just 1 of 1000 reasons that support the idea that if you think the video was faked or it makes any sense, that you are either a troll or just extremely delusional.

Look at Asheron's Call 1. A bunch of people still play that, and those graphics are horrid. The problem is that those people aren't new and they're already acclimated to the way the game looks and feels. They weren't too bad when it originally came out.
But a lot of people in today's world are spoiled by eye candy and thats what they want to see. Unfortunantly I like to see pretty things too, but sometimes it's worth sacrificing in order to boost performance. I really don't want to die because my frames per second dropped to 3.1 while a mage in the distance was casting a spell.
They also don't realize when you record an encode a video it's not exactly high def, especially the ones that Adventurine record. They try to advertise all their stuff as it looks to the average person. I'm fairly sure it'll look better when you're actually in the game, aside from the 2d explosions. (which is a worthy sacrifice for performance)
People with high end computers also tend to play games that actually use their expensive equipment. For some reason it gives them the reassurance that spending several hundred dollars was worth it.
I expect darkfall to upgrade some of the effects and animations, some of them look like place holders. It'll probably happen before release or maybe down the line. Most MMO games tend to upgrade their detail down the line (UO,EQ,WoW is in WotLK)
For now, everyone should just be open minded and try to get into the beta. If they don't like it, well then they need not play it. Look at Age of Conan: That game had great graphics but literally DEFINED epic failure.
Comments

Darkfall wins. Vaportrolls lose.

Final Fantasy 7
The graphics are good enough. I really don't see what everyone is complaining about tbh.
It looks like an average 3D graphics engine. The only way graphics really matter is if it's Runescape-like, or 2D.

Grafik is not as important as a good gameplay. So for me it doesent matter if the grafik is good or not and if you look at darkfall screenshots you will see that in this case the grafik is fu***in awesome.Hopefully the gameplay is too.
nice try, comparing 2 actual gameplay videos of which one ( war) is actual years old, with the newest (edited) video from df..................

The actual graphics seem fine to me in DF. A little dated, but not too bad.
The big problem that I have is with the animations. They are horrible.
I can forgive old graphics, but there is absolutely no reason to have as bad of animations as were seen in the video.
"There is as yet insufficient data for a meaningful answer."
Graphics don't matter. Much.
