lol...this thread is funny. WoW could lose 2/3 of its entire customer base and it would still be a bigger success than WAR. I preordered WAR and I'm planning on playing it but it's not going to come close to making Blizzard nervous.

Wrath is 2 months away the small dip is players going to WAR will be put right on Nov 13th. And I expect blizzard to break the previous record of 2.4million units sold in 24 hours (US+EU).
The 10 million subscriber base includes Asia to which Warhammer has not yet been picked up. Therefore in reality, it won't happen. Warhammer will be a great game, and most likely take spot number 2. But unless it expands its horizons, it will fall short. And that's a fact! :P
You aren't aware of the servers planned to be in Hong Kong are you?
I do not have any illusions that Warhammer will topple WoW, but I think they've done a lot of things right.
Blizzard don't even have servers actually in Australia, but just fobbed off the Oceanic community with US servers labeled 'Oceanic'.
Just because WAR will have Asian servers won't make it an immediate success in Asia. Tastes in Asia are different than NA. WoW's strength was it balanced the two. I don't know if WAR does or not.
However, I don't think WAR needs to have the largest world wide subscription numbers to take the title as #1 MMO. For the longest time, Lineage was the #1 world wide, but EQ was considered king on MMOs. Why? Because it had the largest NA sub numbers., and that's where the profit margins are. If I had to place a bet, I would say that WAR will get the #1 NA spot from WoW, but who knows? It is all just speculation right now.
Seriously people, i don't know where this mmo a has to kill mmo b...stop being morons, people will chose what they like and not everyone loves to pvp and from alot of topics i have read people will be playing both so really wow won't be losing that many subs, we will see after a month where warhammer is, alot of people cancel from mmo's before the 30 days are up, but i think they'll have a couple million players.
Yeah Blizz just opened up Latino servers and Russian, and with their new activision merger prolly would be able to open up more then that in other countries. -shrug-
Oh and blizzard released part of the Burning crusade content in an early patch too, so i'm not sure they are just doing the same with wrath just because of warhammer.

Stop the fanboyism for either game. It is in our MUTUAL interest that WAR will be a solid contender to WoW's (almost) monopoly. The better the competition the more both developers will try to improve their products.
It is not in the mmo player community's interest to wish for other games to fail.

WAR may have the shortest life span in the history of MMORPG's. Instant fun and hollow gameplay is mostly accompanied with instant boredom. Status of servers in EU today (13:05): One high faction - 8 medium and 40+ low population. We'll see in 8 weeks time...
i think they overdid it with the amount of servers

You played an entirely different WAR then I did I guess. If something will dent between the two then my guess is it will be WOTLK since by then the novelty wears off for most of the people.
But then again I bet WAR will be outdoing the rest in the field which will be a nice achievement.
Anywho nice trolling and hope you'll enjoy your WAR, don't really feel sad on loosing people like you to a game I won't play
available on the 6th of August, 2008. On that date, European players will be able to purchase a version of the game and its expansion, The Burning Crusade, fully localised for Russia, and begin playing on dedicated realms with the benefit of a Russian-language customer-support team. This will be the fifth European-language version of World of Warcraft, complementing the existing English, French, German, and Spanish versions.
The other thing to remember is that you can't judge the effect of WAR against WoW for at least two months anyway as most WoW players going across will still be subbed to WoW whilst testing the water in WAR and making their decision at the end of their first month or two in there.
I have no worries for WoW, my worries lay with the smaller niche MMO's that are just about hanging on to their subs and will lose more to WAR including those players that were taking a break from WoW whilst waiting for WAR release. I think it will have far more impact on them than it ever will on WoW.
As for offering Beta keys to leavers, it isn't panic, it is good business sense. We have all seen it with almost any company you deal with, as soon as you threaten to leave and join the competition they will offer you incentives to stay, and MMO's are no different.

Warhammer is going to sell a crazy amount of copies. With WoW being practically the only game on the block for 4 years, people are craving something new. Just look at Conan. Even with bad word of mouth coming out before launch it still closed in on a million very quickly. People want something new and warhammer is the newest game to come out.
Everyone focuses on how new and "different" warhammer is, which I disagree with. Outside of the public quests and world pvp, it is mostly been there, done that. People who are bored with WoW are going to blow through this game right to level 40. I am concerned, because endgame looks to be very small and repetative. No I have not been there, but that is my initial impression. That is why I think people who got burned out on WoW will just get burned out again in Warhammer, but even quicker. The PvP might be the next best thing since sliced bread, but the PvE is pretty boring. Variety keeps people subbed.
Someone above mentioned that it is in out best interest to have another successful game on the market and I couldn't agree more with that statement. Not for the reasons Paul Barnet stated in his blog, but for reasons similiar enough. In the end I think warhammer will average out to be a good game with about 10-20% of wows current subs, but I think most of those are going to come from people who are already gone from WoW. On top of that are people who will carry subs to both games, which everyone seems to think is impossible. This is my current thoughts for both games in 1 year.
4.5 million US/EU current subs, but that doesn't include how ever many that quit. I suspect the overall total subscribers for WoW+Warhammer will be more that WoW has right now.

They've been slowly increasing server caps for some time in order to prepare for launch. That's why they've been overpoped at the beginning and now they are all low-to-medium outside the rush hour afternoons and evenings.
I wouldn't be surprised if their intention with this was to have a nice spread of tested low pop servers at launch, rather than plugging in new ones that would fill up and crash like firecrackers. That's just a very well thought out MMO release strategy.
And besides, I find myself playing WAR less than I did WoW (though it's maybe too early to tell) even though I believe it a much superior and enjoyable game. And why is that? Because I'm having so much fun that I feel overloaded after 2 hours and want to take a break, feeling satisfied. In WoW I'd spend HOURS on end just timesinking so I could maybe, eventually, accomplish something meaningful later on. Herbalism in Terokar ftw.

Just to put it in perspective. Warhammer is releasing 1.5M boxes to retailers, they will probably sell about 1M of them in the first week. Burning Crusade sold 2.4M copies ON THE FIRST DAY.. The total population of WOW has grown about 30% since BC was released... it's not unreasonable to expect Wraith to sell 3M copies on the first day and another 3M over the next few weeks.
Warhammer sounds cool (in the same way AOC did). Warhammer is actually finished and a pretty decent game. But it is way less polished than WOW and has none of the content WOW does. Every tier of Warhammer has the exact same mechanisms and seige tactics... what this means... it will get OLD very fast. How many times can you run into the middle of a field and kill the same players over and over again. Lake Wintergrasp actually has more detail in its seiging then Warhammer does (moveable seige weapons, troup transports etc). Warhammer use AB and WSG type games, while Blizzard has gone to the next level in Wraith.
Also they made a huge mistake with their method to balance realms. Already a majority of servers have one realm that is completely dominating another realm... when this happens, everyone tries to roll on the winning side and nobody rolls onthe losing side. Have you ever been in a bracket of AV where your side always loses.. that is the way almost all the servers are already.. and it's only going to get worse.
Warhammer will have about 500k subscribers when Wraith is launched.

Very good post.
I think it sums up the WAR feeling I have. You can't play it longer than 2 hours because it is overloaded.
Besides, I think it is for the young kids.
It's a no brainer, but a very intense no brainer.
Looking at the EU servers now and yesterday, it is indeed showing what you and I feel. Although we have very much different views on Wow.
Wake up and smell the coffee already. WaR kill WoW not even by a longshot. It might if it's lucky take 10-15% of it's userbase but that pretty much it.
Most of WOW player base are casual player that play for the PVE aspect. WaR PVE is okay but really secondary to the PVP/RVR aspect. Most of WoW players are not into that so only those that are really in PVP will come over, which frankly is not that many people.
Don't take me wront WaR is a great game, if you are into PVP. If your not really then it's not a game for you and because of that WoW will keep 80% of it's userbase.

Agreed with just about everything you said. War will do well, but not at the expense of WoW, rather in addition to WoW. I'm actually rooting for War to bring a little competition into the genre and take a little heat off of WoW. People need to move on and quit blaming WoW for everything the MMO genre is not.

Well, I'm sure 8M of that 10 are asians. When I tried the game, I was on the most populated server. There was no way it had a million players on it. I'm not sticking up for WoW. I think they pad thier numbers, but my point is WAR will not break WoW, nor will it ever see WoW numbers until it releases in asia. Let's be more realistic ok? War will be full, don't worry.
There around 4.5 million western subs the other 6million are asian, its all in their press releases backed up with sales of TBC of over 3.6million in the first month (subs were around 3.8million in EU+US when TBC launched) , that was box sales in US+EU... cant argue with box sales.
There are about 430 US+EU servere serving that 4.5million player base. Yes there wont be a million on a server more like an average of 10,000 (more more some less).
WAR is ok (if WoW was never made), I bought it, spent about 2 hour in it today with my squib herder dont feel too impelled to start it up again TBH.

but yes its not a million per server my freind thought that too..

Yay! Finally the cat is gone!!! No more creepy cat hypnotizing me.
It will be missed though,
Why losing 10 million subscribers is relevant to a persons decision to play a new game or not is confusing to me. Some of us play Hellgate: London and like it. Games are judged by the eye and mind of the beholder. To each his own, Happy Gaming.

Warhammer might do well for a while but it shouldn't take long for EA to screw it up.

Indeed.
