Sad.
Having said that, I like VG now. It has improved a lot since beta. But I still say the plastic and FRPGs dont go together!

I've been playing VG again after the AOC mess. The game is quite nice to look at on higher settings, but yes, there are problems with some of the gear and animations. Some look really bad while others look very nice.
Take my monk for example. The martial arts animations are top notch IMO, and they completely change depending on which weapon you are using. They're very fluid and sharp for the most part. To me, the animations that are really bad are the swimming, running, and jumping animations. Combat animations are pretty good.
I'm torn on the graphics for the equipment. Some (most) looks stunning even when you zoom in on it. Metal shines in the sun, leather has texture, there's fine details to observe, etc. What I really don't like is the way they ripped apart the old armor for the GU6 update (mostly robes now). Instead of designing new armor from the ground up to be sexy, they simply removed sections of existing armor to show some skin. It makes the armor look incomplete and like an after thought. They can do much better work.
they say they improved toon animation, its just as bad as it ever was and toons are still pretty ugly the trial island looks poorly made. but iv been in the game and it looks a ton better. not a very good example of how nice vg landscape is.
meh...its a shame...game itself is not bad....its just so ugly..
The animations were not changed in GU6 what they changed was the number of polys in the models so that the performance would be better.
Personally I think the game looks great. Some animations definitely need improvement, running, jumping, capes etc. However some are really great like the monk/disciple fighting, rogue idle moves, etc.
when will the imrove animation?
i thought i was supposed to be in GU6...:)
GU7?
There isn't a set date. I think GU7 will be mostly about adding new content. In a podcast silias said something about looking at the animations sometime next year. I think for now the intent is to focus on adding more high lvl content and new stuff like fishing etc.
So if the animations are a make or break it issue don't hold your breath.
il try and play the game for a couple hour later tonight and see if i can get past the animation and modles ..
bah...i might reactivate my account....i really dont like the trial island
Well sgtfrog, I know what MMO you are coming from (my favorite) and I agree, the animations are no where near that quality nor is the art. It is a western designed game and our devs are exceptionally weak in both those areas. (along with general technical quality but I digress)
However VG has a lot of strengths in the PvE area that many MMOs miss. It has a lot of virtual world qualities and does give me that AC feeling to a point but its missing the scope of content and overall purpose.
Its not perfect and its not nearly as compelling to play as our fav but its generally a pretty good game.
I don't like the trial island either. I understand why they made it, because they needed a smaller download, but its not as good as the mainland.

I agree to an extent Frog, it was the minor annoyances that drove me away from VG originally as well. Aside from glitches and hitching, I found myself screaming at the metallic trees. That and toon animations.
As for the new armors, I can take the old ones. The low lvl armor should look like crap (well, but still good artistically). It should basically look like "training" gear, for when you get to higher lvls and your toon actually has "gained an appreciation for their armor". That is just a psychological and thus subjective perspective though. As far as VG is concerned, however, they could serve themselves to actually develop "sexy" armors ala Oblivion or some such, if they wanted a more "fantas"tic "sexy" feel to it. I'm hoping that when they update the animations, they will take that line of thinking into consideration. Lopping off pieces just to show skin, is both cheap and unimaginative. Worse- it shows.
As far as the plastic-y feel to it, I think that is also due to misuse of specular maps, mixed with nonexistant skin textures. They used painted, one largely one color texturemaps for the toons' skin. That is great for low rez needs. They had used high rez, at least semi-photoreal textures elsewhere, and so the poor skin textures here stand out incredibly.
I think moral of the story, at least as far as graphics go, is be consistant. Not just in style, but in technique.
And that, I think (read hope) everyone can agree on.

some times our memory of an early game, Jagged Alliance springs to mind for instance, that it was incredible looking and then when you go back and reinstall years later, to the blocky graphics you think "WTF I can barely see this". So I am glad to see that it's not just my standards were raised with WAR recently and that the game is infact, quite ugly.

In some aspects AoC graphics are superior but in others VG wins hands down. In AoC when you suddenly realise the lovely backdrop you see is a picture, you notice it everywhere. With VG landscapes really have a "depth" to them, best way I can describe it.
Also VG is very good at not having the same picture twice, in that weather, clouds, day/night time, sun/moon positions really help making the scenary different every time, with games like AoC and LoTR, the back drop rarely changes and is often seen as a restrictive barrier (boxed zones rather than free roaming chunks).
Just my opinion anyway.

I think the guy looks pretty sad. Maybe you should be more sensitive and consider his feelings before calling him ugly.
XD
I think different races look better than others. I've hardly ever played a game where I've thought 100% of the races looked great. Other than that, VG, in my opinion, has the same "problem" (again - imo) as other MMOs.. they do a fantastic job with the environments, but the characters never look quite right. One of the only examples I can think of where the characters look equally as good as the environments is Lineage 2. LoTRO does a *decent* job with races, but the environments are far better.. again, imo.
BTW: I agree with you about FFXI. I think the game, despite its age, looks great - especially as you get into the later areas. "Sea" in particular is gorgeous (though rather bizarre :-p). I think it's because they rely more on artwork and less on technology to establish the game's look (art doesn't really "look aged", while technology does).

My biggest gripe with the graphics was that world objects don't have shadows. Trees seem to be floating on the ground, detached from it. Everything has this plasticky look as a result. I hope they add shadows one day like every game since the turn of the century has.

Which games are that to be exactly.
Make a list, I'd expect it to be pretty huge from the tone of your post.
Are you going to argue that having no shadows in a game in 2008 is normal because some games less than eight years older than it also don't have them?
Besides, I didn't in any way imply that I dislike Vanguard, just that its graphics - like any game's - could be improved upon. Try and hold back the nerdrage.

If you are posting about the shadows and I post to that, then that is what the post was about. Had nothing to do with if you like the game or not.
There are shadows in Vanguard there is no reason ta say that there is none. And if you are not meaning to compare games with the last 8 years, then don't start out to. But the impression given is that most games have better shadows, but in reality is it so?
But a quick comparison, there was a game released just a week back. WAR, where are the supposedly great shadows in that game.
I really like the shadows in VG as well but there is some inconsistancy.
The sun angle will actually create shade from landscape features but entities in said shade are held to the overall light factor for the time in game. It's not a big deal to me though and I'm very impressed that the landscape creates shade.
There is a "real light" feature you can enable so that could be why people are seeing shadows differently.
Edit: I also wanted to point out the ground texture itself has shading.
As far as the models go I don’t think they’re ugly just a little bland. I would like to point out you can modify your characters look quite a bit especially in the face. That won’t help with the plastic look though and I agree that a sandpaper option should be available in character creation.
My main want in Vanguard when talking about art direction is the look of weapons and armor. They are very traditional looking and though that’s not a bad thing I hope Sony will spice it up in the future. Fantasy is just that and if I can have an intelligent conversation with bipedal tiger I can have flames or ice spikes coming out of my shoulders. The scope of model resources VG has would make the more outrageous weapon/armors look fantastic. Imagine a semi translucent armor made of ice.
from an artistic eye, and most people who are artistic will tell you that wow and war game artists are more talented than the vanguards ones..it doesn't matter what your opinion is, that fact wont change..its like how asians mmo's artists are head and shoulders above western ones.
from an artistic eye, and most people who are artistic will tell you that wow and war game artists are more talented than the vanguards ones..it doesn't matter what your opinion is, that fact wont change..its like how asians mmo's artists are head and shoulders above western ones.
For someone that's been putting pencil and paint to paper and canvas for over 20 years now, I would have to disagree with you.
You didn't state a fact so it's possible to change.
Neither art is any better then the other; nor the artists more talented then the other.
I can draw a photorealistic portraite that not many artists are capable of doing, this doesn't make me any better then someone that does manga.
Also to note, being artistic and being accomplished artistically are entirely dif. things. You may think you're artistic and be able to produce something a little more intricate then a stick figure, but that hardly makes you accomplished let alone an authority on what is talent and what isn't. It's also rather self righteous and snobbish to make an assumption like the one you made. The magority of the people in the world have some level of artistic talent, most just don't realize it.
You promote creativety and imagination through art by encouraging others with the desire to be artists to do a variety of things, not by telling one set of people they aren't as good because you prefer another style over thiers.
The arrogance that comes across in that first sentence just eats at me.
Edit: You seem to have a very narrow minded opinion of what art is. Now the last sentence is really bugging the hell out of me. It's hardly as simple as Western over Eastern. There's a lot inbetween.
