Howdy, Stranger!

It looks like you're new here. If you want to get involved, click one of these buttons!

Are you kidding me right now?

OK, setting aside my better judgement I let my buddies talk me into getting WAR. I am a former DAoC player so whatever, I didn't mind getting the game.

So I buy it from the EA store yesterday (release day) and I choose the Digital download as it is easier than going out to the store plus I had some paypal money I wanted to use up so those basterds are not gaining interest. Anyway, I start the download through the EADownload Manager.

So far so good, 8 hours later on a 12 gig download it's at 100% complete with a Extract button ready to be pressed. Cool.

So I walk over to the computer this morning, hit "extract", oh about 10 seconds later "Unpack Failure".

hmmmmm. Ok well let's try again, "Extract".... "Unpack Failure". SON OF A B*****!!!!

"Extract".... "Unpack Failure"

"Extract".... "Unpack Failure"

"Extract".... "Unpack Failure"

Alright, well let's set up the account and see if that helps,

Head over to Mythic and setup the account and use the digital cd key to activate and validate the retail purchase (which starts the clock on my free month).

"Extract".... "Unpack Failure"

Alright well I have to go to work, I will try to contact mythic when I get there......

Oh wait, mythic doesn't have support forums for warhammer.... mythic knowledge base has no mention of any downloading problems what-so-ever.

Let me try and call them.

"Thank you for calling EA" "If you calling about Spore®" "NO" "2" "Technical Support" "NO" Installation Issue" "NO"

"We're sorry we could not help you if you please visit our online support page via www.yougotscrewed.com you can ask questions blah blah blah..." "CLICK"

OK, sigh so back to support page to ask a question.

"Mythic / EA Games

I downloaded the digital version of the game and setup / validated a warhammer account. I am using the EADM to download the game, once the game reach 100% for extraction the files refuse to unpack as intended. I recieve "Unpack Failure" message. Please respond."

"Thank you for submitting a support ticket, our staff will try and answer any questions you have within the next 24 hours"

ARE YOU F****** KIDDING ME RIGHT NOW?!?!@?!!?

You release a game, in retail box and digital download form, give your customers NO way to contact you with any useful information on the other end, no forum medium to connect to other users who MIGHT have the same issue, make us wait 24 hours for a answer that MAY or MAY NOT help us, in which case we have to ask another question requiring ANOTHER 24 HOUR WAIT.

Sigh, this is ridiculous I should have known better than to buy the damn thing.....

Would this not be an installation issue?

You said extract.  Was it zipped?

The point to that little spill was your talking to a machine and not a person, I went through every option for every technical issue it had listed and nothing was close to the issue I had.

Most companies, if their little machine will not help you, they ask you to please hold while you wait for the next available customer service rep.

Not mythic.... you get lead straight back to the useless website to ask your question that has a 24 hour turn around.

    Dude

    I sympathize with your problem.

you'd think with all the hype and beta testing that they would be competant enough to sort this out.

and its just the first 24hrs.

The EADM is weird, I will have to investigate it more when I get home tonight and have time to fool with it. I went through the DL folders in the program files and such before work.

From what I can tell the download was in a file type that only EADM can open, which is why on mythics site it says if you uninstall EADM from your system if you purchased the digital version of the game it would no longer work unless EADM is on the system. That stupid like DL manager seems to be the key to it all though it seems to be broken when it comes to warhammer.

I thought like you, if I can find the actual file, I might can use a diff proggy like WinRAR or Winzip to manually extract it myself.

Although it seems it can only be unpacked using the EADM itself.

well hopefully it wont take a wholle 24 hours for them to respond to your question.

Just a quick dumb question: You do have enough harddrive space, yes?

But you're right, it really sucks that a big company like Mythic don't have a forum. A lot of these issues we seen would be easy solved that way. All other big MMO companies have them and there's a reason for that.

I am hoping the same Calibur, but to be honest I am not holding my breath.

I have been around the block many times in MMO's dealt with pretty much every company that makes them.

When you have to submit a "ticket", generally you will get some work around the problem answer than doesn't really help you, or a reply to seek help else where that it isn't related to them. Then you have to spend days if not weeks trying to get a straight answer with 24 hour turnarounds each time.

I supsect since it is an EA Downloader issue and you have to submit the ticket to Mythic, they will just point me back to the phone system that doesn't help me, because "It is an EA application not a Mythic application".

    But we will see.

After everything i have read on these forums and others, nothing beats walking your happy butt into a store and purchasing these games.  It might work for most ppl but most ppl dont have my luck as far as downloading games offline, pre-ordering or anything like that..................  So the lesson we have learned is, sometimes the old fashioned way is still the best. Not to say that the OP should have done that, ppl do what they want.

Yeah it is one of the first things I checked this morning.

The game requires something like 12.6 or something gigs.

I had 23 available so I think I am ok on space.

The problem is with this downloader not doing what it is designed to do OR the warhammer download is corrupt. I MIGHT have to re download it... but that's another 8 hours wasted of life...

I know this is coming off like a rant, but seriously, I wanted to give WAR and Mythic the shot they deserve specially coming from DAoC.

This is just getting to the ridiculous point now though.

Normally I do, I have the retail box editions of all my other MMO's. The only reason I went Digital this time was to use up that paypal money from ebay sells I didn't want sitting in their vaults anymore. This was a good option to get it used up.

I have used the Downloader before on the Digital expansion pack to BF:2142, it worked fine for that. Had no issues with the DL or the installation.

Like I said, I'm going to play with it hardcore tonight and get it working if it kills me, but mythic should have looked at all it's angles before release.

If your going to offer a digital version of a game, and it has to be ran through a Manager, by god make sure it works first or don't offer it.

    You can't "predict" stupid.

    Basic interwebs knowledge:

"When downloading a big file, you may lose data"

Hence the fail reason on unpacking (I'm assuming you downloaded a zipped file, unzipped it, then trying to install.  Again, basic gamer knowledge..)

Here is another TIP for using the phone.  When you want to talk to a person about a game.. And you want a live person.. PLAY STUPID.  Talk to the people supporting spore.  Say.. Oh.. I though the menu said WAR.  Can I have the extention for tech support over there?..   If not..

You aren't missing much. I have this "job thing" I have to go to everyday.. I'm there for 10 hours (including drive time).. And I can't play a video game.. So I post on the forums.. but.. I'm not missing much.. Really..

It is zipped, but not in a zip format. I should say it is compressed and needs extracted, just not using the conventional means of compression as we are used to.

It has an installer, because it extracted enough for me to see that. I even tried to run that installer, however it craps out about 5% because it is missing files. The files that need to be extracted then the Download extracter craps out at about 30%.

Its is a shame your having troubles with the digital download. I always choose digital although this time I wanted the retail box for nostalgic reasons, plus I did not want to wait for a 15 gig download. I don't blame you for ranting of course, since it seems you have no where to turn and, like all of us, you just want to play. I love the game so far and I hope this digital hassle does not change your mind about playing, stick it out!

Thing is I am not bitching or moaning, more like frustrated. I will get it working that isn't an issue. It may take some time, but I will get it working, I haven't found a technical issue yet that I haven't been able to crack.

I am aware that data gets lost which is why I stated I may have to just re download it. It is just a last resort option for me because it isn't Super Mario Bros 54kb we talking about here its 12.6 gigs, which even on a fast connections take quite a bit of time.

My point to all this really is, "When you release a game, at least make sure the game can be installed to play it" - bugs are expected in game, but at the very least getting to in-game should run smooth.

    If mythic uploads the game..

Then the entire game is there.  Just from reading what you've wrote, it really looks like simple data loss.  Mythic cannot prevent this stuff..

While I'm sure you're not too keen on downloading the client again, but if for whatever reason you can't get this to work I would suggest dowloading through torrent.  The beta client is still available.  It will patch itself to live (at least mine did).  I dowloaded through a torrent from one of the torrent tracker sights and it works fine.  Bought the box, but never put the dvd in just used the beta client to patch up to live.  Though I also wouldn't blame you if you didn't want to go through the hastle, and you shouldn't have to, but it may be faster than trying to get something working with tech services.

I didnt know if the beta client download would work or not, but if it does, I will try that when I get home. It's better than nothing.

I have had problems with anti-virus and firewall screwing up the DL whenever it's done through a DL manager ( fileplanet dl manager etc. ) just a thought.

happens mostly with large files 5Gb or higher

  • arshvinarshvin Member Posts: 5

I am suprised that you can wait for 8hrs download.

  • skydragonrenskydragonren Member Posts: 667

Anyone have a link to a beta download that doesn't require a beta key for the client?

Like fileplanet host the beta client still but you need a key just to DL it.

The only one I have is the torrent version:

    http://torrent2.eamythic.com/WarBeta.torrent

The torrent is still active, and not NEARLY as painful as AoC beta dl was.
