Dark and Light all the way!
Just check out the FAQs and the DevChats and you'll agree, not to mention the screenshots and the movies! Just think how marvellous it will be to fly over a lake with a hangglider while the sun sets, and as you're running through a forest it begins to rain... ...the weather will definitely be one of the main attractions of this game, not to mention the wide range of transports: some classical ones like dragons, pegasi and horses, and some more original ones like dodos, hanggliders, hot-air balloons and a shield (works like a snowboard).
You may also want to compare the battle system with that of WoW. In WoW ´the characters just stand around hitting at eachother and get told through text messages what's happening, whereas in DnL you see people parrying blows, moving as they get hit, getting thrown aside by spells and get tossed aside by dragons!
Then there's also a huge world to explore, one that you won't be able to thouroughly explore until they add to it.
Having hired Alchemic Dream they will also have a living community, as will WoW. Both DnL and WoW have said that their games will be quest-driven, which is great! I just hope neither does a Star Wars Galaxies and allow several people to do the exact same quest, over and over again! It ruins the realism...
In DnL, you'll allways have something to do. My second favorite is Guild Wars, because it will be free to play and because you will be able to customize your character using expansions. World of Warcraft comes in a third place, mainly because it looks like a good game for exploring and I like the Warcrafty graphics.

I hope for EverQuest II,
I played allmost 4 years EverQuest,
I played 2 month SWG,
I played 6 Month FFXI.
I stopped EverQuest because i wanted a break from the daily raiding for amor and now i'm to long away to go back.
Looking back to EQ it's for me clear, they didn't make the perfect game, but they maked a game which i enjoyed 4 years.
I think Everquest II will be a great game. From what I have seen and read about it, there are all sorts of nice features and new things that can make it exciting and fun.
Dark and Light also looks impressive. I haven't been following up on it as much as I had in the beginning of development, but I am still interested and will certainly be trying it out. I love the idea of the dynamic weather and one huge world.
World of Warcraft will probably be a big hit, although I am not too interested. From what I've heard it does a good job of taking everything that makes current mmorpgs successful and combines all the features into a polished game. But the graphics and some other things don't grab me.
The Matrix Online is my underdog pick. I think it will have a select player base, there surely won't be the huge numbers of subscribers like EQ2, WoW, and DnL will have, but I think the game is coming along pretty well and it looks like it'll be good.
My picks for games that will flop:
Saga of Ryzom, Wish, Risk Your Life, and Middle Earth Online.
I don't include Guild Wars because I don't consider it a mmorpg. I do think it will be great. I played the 3 day beta a while back and it looked promising. It'll be fun to play a competitive MMO for a change.
I am going for Dark and Light and World of Warcraft.
At the moment my first choice is DnL because it just sounds great and brings some new things to a mmorpg. My new computer will be bought in september so that's on time for these new games to come out and be played by me. Just hoipe they do what they promised ( i will still be happy if it is only the half of it).
One day all will die, surely you but never I.

I am going to agree with Liquido. I played the original EverQuest for approximately 4 years, and stopped for very much the same reasons. A few months ago, I started playing again only to find that the world of EQ is just not what it used to be.
I'll admit I haven't been paying nearly much attention to other MMORPGs as I should, though now that I found this great site, I think that will change.
I have a friend who's been playing beta for World of Warcraft, and reports from him indicate that the game seems to get slightly boring after only a few months of play. I still think I'll play the game to make my own decision, though. I have high hopes for EverQuest II, so I'll vote that.
There are a lot of games coming out that sound good. While I definitely think games like EQ2, WoW, and Vanguard will have the most polish, I think in terms of new content games like DnL, Trials of Ascension, and Irth Online will be interesting.
In the near future, my vote and my money goes to Face of Mankind.
Dark and Light
Though in the near future, I will probably go with Face of Mankind, too, just because of the lack of games that interest me currently.

WOW: most fun <-- my fav
EQ2: best gfx
Ryzom: i didn't like the beta at all
Middle Earth Online: won't be out soon
Couple things I dont like about DnL. For one, I heard if you want to PvP and you go in the opposite realm, you'll get automatically weaker and the people there will be stronger for being in their own realm, which imo, sucks, is pathetic, and not very realistic or fun.
Secondly, PvP of the dark, I think that the darkside should be chaotic in a way, and evil. Where you can kill your own for any reason you like. But of course there would be a sense of order. But think of the sith.

My vote goes to Dark and Light.
I have no objection to you stating your opinion, but you should get your facts straight first. As for the first point, you don't get weaker, you just get fewer or no mana bonuses which you have in your own land from captured mana fountains, which means it makes sense. The farther you go in, the less your boost and the more your enemies have, meaning randomly venturing deep into enemy territory is dangerous and more risky than attacking a border, which is actually more realistic rather than less.
As for the second part, the dev's have stated many times over that dark and light has no relation to good and evil. While at the current time most people automatically equate one to the other, this is not the case. Dark and light mana has nothing at all to do with good and evil, it is merely how it is.
I say Pirates of the burning sea because it is a different and new approach to a mmorpg there hasent been a pirate/sea type mmorpg yet and I really like how this company trys something different for once. EQ II is just going to be the same old crap from EQ1 only with maybe enhanced graphics and more content in the long run its not gonna keep peopel hooked.
People get sick of killling goblins and monsters Pirates of the Burning sea is kind of under rated imo judgeing most of the post on this discussion all voted for all the big names such as EQ and wow and ignore the other small new games. Personly I think WoW is crap played it at the E3 it looks like a low budget cartoon EQ2 is just a copycat of EQ nothing new except more content. I will buy the pirates game to try something new for once. Dark and Light I cant say for that game never heard of it but it sounds like that one crappy UK mmorpg Black and White.

Ah, but this is the best part for those who want PvP. If an alignment (Dark or Light) can gather enough of certain resources it can activate the nearest mana fountain and it will provide a significant boost to mana recharge rates. This mana is an energy that is required for all offensive and defensive actions (like the space ship energy in EVE-Online). So managing mana is just one of the real skills needed for a fighter.
So an offensive army must either be much more numerous than the defenders or they must use strategy to take down the mana fountains first. Imagine using strategy instead of a zerg attack in a MMORPG! This can be done by cutting off the resources feeding that fountain. The majority of resources will be carried by automated caravans. So in preparation for a big attack send out numerous raiding parties for a few days. Use mis-direction to fool the enemy as to your intentions. Wear them out locally and then attack towards a major settlement. Use stealthy explorers to find a mana fountain that is not defended well and zerg attack it. This game will be full of moving open field battles and the taking advantage of opportunities when they arise.
As you might imagine a large area will exist that is not covered by mana fountains and in these areas the PvP will be completely open in regards to attacking characters of the opposite alignment. You do not take a reputation hit for this kind of player killing.

Well i come from playing Ultima online from the beginning for 5 years straight.. I tried to start back up again, but i felt it just wasnt worth it the way it was being run..
I loved everything about UO, the community, the houses, the economy, the PVP i have to say was awesome. I loved factions, and when they had good versus evil. Player killers, and giant graveyard battles when server was shutting down. I loved how you could do anything you wanted to in that game basicly. So i do come from a big uo background..
Now i also played Dark age of camelot for a year or so.. And how i wasnt really impressed with much in it.. I did love the PVP.. It was great having big raids between the 3 realms i guess they were called..
So im so confused now as to what going to be a great game..
My UO background has basicly i shall say put me at a biased towards alot of other mmorpg's...
It is so hard going from something your so used to, to something your not.. Im sure alot of you know.
I honestly havnt checked out face of mankind, but i see alot of people seem to like it.. so i might just have to look at it some more.

MEO needs to be taking off the list because it will not be released for at least another year, possibly even not until 2006. Maybe replace it with one of the other sci-fi mmogs coming out such as FACE OF MANKIND or THE MATRIX ONLINE. I haven't followed either of those games very much, but they would be more relavent in the poll.
I'm gonna give SoR a try. Hopefully all the bugs will be fixed at release next month, and the promised content included. Looks like the battle for most popular mmorpg wil be between EQ2 and WoW according to the pole so far.
I will be playing WoW and keeping my ear tuned to the news of other games when they come out, possiley (though i doubt it) moving if necessary.

Quote from Finwe: I've been waiting anxiously for a game that acts more realistically and doesnt impose invisible barriers or penalties but acts as such where their is penalties of the whole point of you get a "record" and people start to hate/fear you, and orderly and good cities dont want you in their midsts. But I've been reading a little bit of it, and I may of seemed to mis-interpret it, but not only is it restricted betwen Dark Vs Light, no inter-attackings and becoming an outlaw. Because it seemed to of not stated otherwise, all it seemed to of mentioned is killing weak players is a no-no, or is that weak players within your kingdom and PvP is actually free and open?__________________________________________________________________________
Dark and Light is also a very socially interactive game. Players who gain the skills and conquer a fortess (lots of fortresses) rule the surrounding land and any village that may develop. If anyone displeases him that noble can place a bounty on that characters head (I assume only good for the land he controls). So you can become an outlaw for reasons ranging from role-play violations to harassment to suspicion of aiding the opposite alignment. It is not a built in game reputation hit! Fortress owners also elect higher level nobles to rule larger areas.
Killing players of a lower level range is a no-no because Dark and Light has 10 level ranges to go along with its 10 kingdoms. This contrasts with Darkfall having only one level range in which the stated maximum character power level difference will only be 3 or 4 to 1.
NC2 all the way
So none in the poll
There is no such thing as "The best MMORPG". What counts is two things:
1. Is whatever MMORPG one considering playing, or IS playing, financially successful enough that it is not in risk of getting shut down a-la MCO and EnB?
2. Does whatever MMORPG one is playing, or considering playing, fit one's preferred playstyle. AO and DAoC lean more towards PvP. EQ leans more towards PvE aka PvM. EvE leans towards Spaceships and Space. Etc... etc...

I probably won't ever play another SOE game again, for all of the constant threats of being banned, and banning friends for no reason other than recieving "duped" items that was unknown to them. It's something that they put in the game that other people use and then people who unkowingly become involvedi n this "duping" mix get banned for just doing normal business.
I am a big fan of the OLD Ultima Online, it had a great community and was very fun to play. I am also a fan of the OLD DAOC. Too many things have been nerfed, changed, and added that has really changed the game. It's still a great game these days though. So, the game I am most looking forward to at this point is Guild Wars. Guild Wars by no means is an MMORPG, instead it is an MMO, which is fine. It incorporates a lot of PvPing along with a little bit of some RPG thrown in there.
As for MMORPG, I'm going to say Wish, for the simple fact it's geared towards the Old UO players. Let's see if they can pull it out, because UO2 was going to be great, if EA hadn't taken over things.
Finwe on microphones in MMOs: "it'd eliminate l33t speak....But it would bring in ebonics."
I still need to play Dragon Empires, The Matrix Online, World of Warcraft, Dark and Light, and Mourning before I decide. I will most likely pass on EQ2 unless enough of my friends play it. Even if they do I won't be investing any serious time into it. Not a big fan of how SOE conducts themselves.
edit: Add Wish to the need to test list.
