Things you hate about the MMO community and forums

merv808merv808 Member UncommonPosts: 511

Everyone has their pet peeves, here is your chance to vent about them....

I'll start.

I hate when people come to forums and ask how they should build their character.

Whenever we finally get a game that has great  character customization, everyone still runs around with the exact same build because they read on the forums that it was the best. Nothing is more annoying to me.

The best build should be the character you play, played the way tou want to play it. Character creation and development should be about personal creativity.

When someone makes a horribly flawed argument in a certain area of expertise and nobody calls them on it. Especially when they all continue to make arguments drawing on that area.

When people give their opinion of what something means and do not bother to look it up. Especially if someone does and they ignore the definition.

I am a skeptical supporter of DF. I am not a fanboi nor a troll. I seek the truth in every discussion, and I am truly sorry if I mistakenly state a fallacy.

That's not really their fault though, betas have become more and more marketing tools, instead of their original purpose, testing.  It's gone from people who want to test games to people who just want to play it early.

I hate when people complain about people complaining, the genre is in a down state right now

I hate when intelligent, genuine questions are met with flames instead of just answering the question

I hate fanbois, who cares if someone doesn't like your game? Trolls don't really matter cuz a good game can stand on its own merits

I hate false information spouted like its true and then watching people repeat it over and over

I hate the fact that every new game is treated like its the savior of the genre or the Wowkiller before its even released. Wow Shmow, it is what it is, does it really matter if it loses market share?

I too have an issue with people who complain about Beta, because it is, after all,  Beta and not supposed to be ready

Beyond that I love you all.

I hate trolls. I mean if you don't like a game - fine - but we don't want to hear about it! Really...if it's so bad I'm sure you've got something better to occupy your time with otherwise you'd be playing.

    Hi,

There are some things I really hate about MMO-commuminty's especially when you really try to become a part of the helping community.

I remember on the Florensia-forums, there were a some posts on the same topic asking the same, even when those posters know there is a search function. And when you ask something to those poster: "like what do you mean?" and they never answer your questions. Than you think: why the $$$$ are I even doing it.

Major thing I hate is constant flame wars between games. Its like a more childish way of supporting a sports team.

There's a difference between a troll and a person who genuinely dislikes a game for whatever reason. Many of the people who attack games do so because they feel that they were lied to, or that the game should have come out differently.

A troll, on the other hand, makes wild accusations or claims, stretches the truth to the breaking point and sometimes just flat out makes up fake info to confuse people and start an argument. I'd say I see FAR more trolls supporting games than attacking them.

A good example would be people attacking WAR for the PQ loot issues, or because some of the classes were taken out, or because the PvP is too rock-paper-scissors style and not balanced enough. Whether you agree with them or not is irrelevant, they are legitimate concerns and people have a right to talk about it. Someone who claims WAR is the ultimate PvE game and has "thousands of ways to level up" and more content than WoW is just a troll (and yes, someone on this forum did actually make that claim).

    i hate that too.

similarly i hate when people make posts saying, "what game should i play?" but then they don't say what they like or dislike in a game.

    Ingame:

Anti-social people who play MMORPGs that should probably be playing a different type of game.

People who behave poorly towards RPers.

Poeple who get pissy when you ask them a question about something their toon is displaying.

People who don't understand the etiquette of trash talking.

People who play video games but think that they're too cool.  You too are a geek or a nerd so don't bash other people who are also geeks and nerds for being uncool or lame.  Edit: same with maturity level, you're playing a video game don't pretend that you're more mature than another gamer.

    Out of game:

    People who name call.

People who attack someone's grammer rather than their ideas.

People who believe they are ordained by the internet God to police game suggestion forums.

People who don't read the other posts on a thread before they comment.

I hate that this forum is just a way for mmo makers to hype and advertise their games. Most of the time the real critics of a game have their threads removed and even get banned for being negative about a game. I can tell you this if you are looking for unbiased opinion about mmos this is not a good site.

I've been a member of several online gaming communities, and really there are only a few things I actually hate.

First of all, there is nothing I hate more than people automatically writing someone off as a troll, just because they dislike a game.

Okay, so there are some trolls lurking about out there.  I really don't care about them so much, since it's obvious that they are merely trying to devalue an otherwise productive community, and you can see them coming a mile away.

What I'm talking about is someone who is genuinely displeased with a game and/or some aspect(s) of it, clearly stating that they are not trolling, but offering well thought out, superbly written, civil, good constructive criticisms, that in most cases are true pitfalls of the game - all to be underminded by some idiot fanboi's response of "GO BACK TO WoW TROLL!!!  L 2 PLAY NOOB!!!"  I realise, I unapologetically just stereotyped the modern fanboy, but whatever....

What bugs me about that is that the guys writing about their concerns, do so because they see an area that could use some work.  These other guys, who somehow think they are saving the community and devs a lot of trouble, end up only hurting it by creating the illusion that there is nothing wrong with their game.

I'm a realist, folks.  I was absolutely in love with the original SWG.  I understand how it feels to like a game a lot, not wanting anyone to talk negatively about it.  But I'm also.... not a moron.  As much as I liked SWG, I couldn't help but plainly see everything that was wrong with the game, and why it drastically needed SOMETHING done to it.  It bothers me that not everyone can see both sides of a coin.

Lastly, I hate how people number crunch.

This isn't so much a forum problem, but it's in the same area.  People lose all focus of everything about the game that all they care about is getting bigger and better numbers for stats, mods, attack power, etc.  I bring this up here because you generally find this sort of technical banter on some sort of a forum, usually an unofficial site.

This bothers me because as much as people will preach to no end about how individual they want to be in a game, they will go to no end to have the best stat possible, which usually resorts to everyone being exactly the same anyway.  Then they complain about how everyone is the same (which, to their defense, it's not their fault that the devs only made one all powerful item, but I digress...)

    Things I hate:

(1)--The company leaves the game in beta to let players fix their mess.

(2)--When someone mentions the game is a mess, everyone on the forum tells them..."IT'S BETA, IT'S NORMAL IT'S TRASH"...consequently said person leaves the game.

(3)--Game gets released with lots of hype from both the company and the remaining beta fanboys. The general public wonders why it sucks so much.

I hate how EVERYTHING is compared to WoW. It's a wow clone. The ui is just like wow. The <insert anything here> is ripped off from wow.

Now, I bought wow when it released and played it for a long time. It's a great game, there's no doubt. However, it wasn't the first MMO out there and if you take a real close look, it's a clone of EQ / DAoC / AC or any other successfull MMO that existed before wow's release.

Undoubtedly the success of wow has set a benchmark but it's just this "wow clone" comment that really bugs the shit out of me.

I'd rather take new games on their own merits.

    THIS!!

Man... I thought I was alone to hate this kind of attitude. What the heck with people looking for "builds" anyway? Why not just play the damn game the way you like?

I think easy to explain ,player  starts a mmo but cant find useful info from official pages ,goes to forums ask questions about classes/builds .There are games with no stat/skill change or so costly another thing noone wants to find their stat/skill points  useless at lvl xx ,but im a new player i have no experience what can i do ?i can only ask to experienced players.

If a player could go to a test server and could test stat/skills freely  would not need ask probably

A lot of game dont give useful info for starters im afraid

     ....

    This.

The Fanbois.  "Fanboi" being the correct spelling BTW ;-P.

I don't mind genuine fans of the game.  Because you can be a fan and still be able to see fault (as you said).

    But Fanbois...???

What do they hope to gain?

Well, actually, I think I know what motivates them.  They are hoping that all their sucking up will get them noticed by the Devs and that they will somehow get "promoted".

That sounds silly right?  Well, actually, Funcom did exactly that when they made a number of Fanbois - Moderators.

    *Shakes head sadly*

As gamers, we should be trying to encourage Devs to make good games and supporting those that do.

We should be joining communities with the goal of helping to make the game better.

Sadly though, the Fanbois tell every Dev that their game is "perfect" from conception and drown out those with genuine and valid concerns.  Then when the game goes live, and those concerns are realized the Fanbois drop the whole thing and move on to the next title.

I hate people who report you for the SMALLEST infraction, in the hope you get banned.

Like I got a two day ban for calling someone an idiot, whilst they were baiting and flaming people.

Things i hate about forums.. only one thing..

If you don't agree with someone you are either a fanboi or a troll.  There just can't be another opinion if it doesn't match yours.

Community... probably only that it used to be a lot better in the days of UO and EQ1... ya my full loot open pvp game had a better community than most anything I can log into today.. and I didn't even like EQ but I had a lot of friends there.
