Okay, so there are some trolls lurking about out there.  I really don't care about them so much, since it's obvious that they are merely trying to devalue an otherwise productive community, and you can see them coming a mile away.
What I'm talking about is someone who is genuinely displeased with a game and/or some aspect(s) of it, clearly stating that they are not trolling, but offering well thought out, superbly written, civil, good constructive criticisms, that in most cases are true pitfalls of the game - all to be underminded by some idiot fanboi's response of "GO BACK TO WoW TROLL!!!  L 2 PLAY NOOB!!!"  I realise, I unapologetically just stereotyped the modern fanboy, but whatever....
What bugs me about that is that the guys writing about their concerns, do so because they see an area that could use some work.  These other guys, who somehow think they are saving the community and devs a lot of trouble, end up only hurting it by creating the illusion that there is nothing wrong with their game.
I'm a realist, folks.  I was absolutely in love with the original SWG.  I understand how it feels to like a game a lot, not wanting anyone to talk negatively about it.  But I'm also.... not a moron.  As much as I liked SWG, I couldn't help but plainly see everything that was wrong with the game, and why it drastically needed SOMETHING done to it.  It bothers me that not everyone can see both sides of a coin.
     ....

    This.

The Fanbois.  "Fanboi" being the correct spelling BTW ;-P.

I don't mind genuine fans of the game.  Because you can be a fan and still be able to see fault (as you said).

    But Fanbois...???

What do they hope to gain?

Well, actually, I think I know what motivates them.  They are hoping that all their sucking up will get them noticed by the Devs and that they will somehow get "promoted".

That sounds silly right?  Well, actually, Funcom did exactly that when they made a number of Fanbois - Moderators.

    *Shakes head sadly*

As gamers, we should be trying to encourage Devs to make good games and supporting those that do.

We should be joining communities with the goal of helping to make the game better.

Sadly though, the Fanbois tell every Dev that their game is "perfect" from conception and drown out those with genuine and valid concerns.  Then when the game goes live, and those concerns are realized the Fanbois drop the whole thing and move on to the next title.

They are the bane of my forum existence.  They turn every legitimate gripe inte a flame war, all while /agreeing with each other and grandstanding. Honestly I rarely ever see "trolls", I usually see people who have a concern and either make it known to get feedback or give information. Negative posts are extremely useful in game development and only the most narcissistic dev would reward the sycophantic, often belligerent posts of these vermin by actually making them mods. Its that type of mindset that brought Failcom to its knees. They and their fanboi lapdogs deserve the same miserable fate. Extinction.

I hate when people come to forums and ask how they should build their character.
Whenever we finally get a game that has great  character customization, everyone still runs around with the exact same build because they read on the forums that it was the best. Nothing is more annoying to me.
The best build should be the character you play, played the way tou want to play it. Character creation and development should be about personal creativity.

The general negativity on the forums. Hence I rarely look or post in them. I just go and enjoy the game I am playing.

I really do not hate anything about it. I love to read the ridiculous statements the fanbois make. The trolls are fun and crack me up. So all in all I love it all that is why I come here.

the only people really is the people who beat their chest about their favoured game while gleefully deeming every other mmo rubbish.

  • TorakTorak Member Posts: 4,905

There are a few things I don't care for that have evolved over the last few years...

The extreme polarization of opinion. If you write something positive about a game, you are a "blind fanboi". If you write something negative, you are a "hater or troll". It gets pretty hard to actually discuss anything about any game without degenerating into a mud slinging match.

The Drama Queens. Yes, most MMO's have had a bad launch, shame on them but really, don't pre-order and do some frickin research before you buy a game. Another thing, SWG vets...get over it. Its tiresome, its not clever, entertaining, informative or even interesting to read at this point. Five years of your pissing and moaning over a video game.

"WoW vs" or "WoW killer" threads....just...stop...it. The game is a phenomena just leave it at that. Things will change in due time.

That's just me though, I know many enjoy that sort of thing.

    Elitism.

I don't like it when people act like the people in their playstyle are the select few most mature and intelligent.

I don't like it when PvP advocates do it.

I don't like it when hardcore grinders do it.

I don't even like it when sandboxers or Rpers do it, even though I think both of those are good things.

You're only hurting yourself when you say that your playstyle makes you special or superior.  You're not likely to get the games you want unless you're willing to reach out to new people, and convince them they should join you, or at least that you can cooexist.

You're not likely to achieve that by going around calling them carebears and noobs, and telling them they're too stupid and immature to understand how awesome your playstyle is.

If you're building an mmorpg, or if you'd like to share ideas or talk about this industry, visit Multiplayer Worlds.

    1.  The lack of ability to have a regular discussion without it devolving, usually within the first page, into being called a fanboi, troll, hater, shill etc. by both extreme ends of the MMO.

    2. The use of opinion as a fact ....Example

"<Insert game> is a total piece of crap" is an opinion statement, not fact

    3. When people throw out unsubstantiated rumor or reports they see on the internet as "facts", who never take the time themselves to research whether its true or not, yet fight tooth and nail when those reports/rumors are questioned or proven wrong.

    4. Attempts by "haters" and "fanbois" when an argument is going south for them to resort to personal attacks on the person they were arguing with.

    5. Drama Queens that bemoan every update/hotfix/expansion/change as the "death' of the game and drone on for days/weeks/years in virtual, self-inflicted purgatory to the rest of the community. They become a nusiance to the board(s) and in the process they end up committing alot of the actions in 1-4 in the extreme in attempts to validate their actions.

    6. Falsely believing that privately owned forums are protected as free speech under the US Constitution and any moderation, deletions of posts or banning of individuals are illegal.

"If we don't attack them, they will attack us first. So we'd better retaliate before they have a chance to strike"

  • I really dislike the "Official" forums in an mmo community. I rather like other forum for debat, One of the reason why I like mmorpg.com so much.

Some really excellent points here. I'd have to add the overuse of the terms 'carebear' and 'go back to WoW'.

Also the trend of blaming kids for eveything that is wrong in MMO's. More often than not you'll find that  the majority of the immaturity comes from people a lot older than you'd think.

Feed the hatre more keep whining about others well done topic failed.

The people who post things like i underlined is something i hate about forums and todays attitude.

    1. The one thing i hate the most are the haters, as an example i'll refer to a thread i posted on a couple of weeks ago..  Some guy posted on the official Star Trek Online forums that the game will fail, giving zero reasons other than the graphics not being up to par with modern Single player games. another one includes 2 threads on this very site about Darkfall failing..  summery : These "Failing" threads and the people who start them need a life, when a games in development it can't fail unless the company goes under (pretty rare), those that think it will "fail" are simply people with sad little lives who don't like the sound of the game, my argument is why bother to post if you don't like something (fair critism with examples and/or proof should be acceptable but not "this game will fail" and nothing else, these should be removed the moment a mod sees them).

    2. WoW comparison, i played WoW and didn't like it personally but it appeals to others which is fair enough and good on them, but WoW is by far the best game to use as a "standard". just because a game has the subscription numbers doesn't mean it's the best game of all time, everyone is different and there is no such thing as "the best game ever".

    3. This may sound picky against WoW players and i apologise to those that play the game who don't do what i'm about to describe..   I've played MMO's for around 5 years now, spending 3 years in pre-NGE SWG as my first ever MMO, since then i've always been active in a games official forum and found the same thing over and over..  WoW lovers signing up to the forum just to spout crap and start hassle, i see no need for this, WoW is a successful game and doesn't need this kind of person to say "this game is junk compared to WoW" on every other games forums. I hate this type of person no matter what game they play as it gives the games community a bad rep.

    4. Again it may sound like i'm picking on a certain type of player but it isn't intended and i apologise.  PvP and raid fans, i'm tired of them whining about games having decay and they shouldn't have just because it increases their outgoings for in game money, decay is needed for the crafting community to have a good economy and good return customers, crafters don't go round complaining or asking for PvP elements to be removed just to suit them so why the need for PvP/Raiders to get their own way and decay get removed or not added to a game. If PvP is all people care about in a game they should probably try something free, another MMO based on PvP or a FPS, Raiders shouldn't need to complain about said things as most games today provide the best loots from Raids which sell in game for the highest amounts, therefore they have countless amounts money to spend anyway.

i have 1 kind of ppl who i really hate.

the "Pr0s" (L33T and so on). This guy always tells you , i have been playing MMO games since XXXX and everything i say/do is because im better than you.

This makes me feel stupid because i have been playing since Eq.. but i dont feel better than anyone since each game is different from others...

Of course , i do agree with most of your posts about the Trolls/fanbois and other "great" kind of ppl.

    Have a nice day =)

Wow...I could just about write an entire article on this, and I just might.  I think everyone has made some really good points here.  My biggest problems are the lack of intelligent comparison and rebuttal, those that feel that everyone has to like the same things as them or they are n00bs, trolls, or whatever, and most hatedly, the absolute and utter lack of realistic respect.  Most of the rude gaming community would never talk the way they talk to people, in-game and on forums in real life.  The bravado that they sport for themselves is fake and obviously so.  We need to start respecting each other...we are interacting with other humans, not NPC's.

    Currently Playing: Aion
    Trying Out:
Retired: The Chronicles of Spellborn, EvE, LotRo, WoW, VG, AoC, CoX, RO
Waiting on: Blade & Soul, Black Prophecy, Global Agenda, The Agency, SW:ToR, T.E.R.A.
Working On: The 5th Dimension (coming soon)

Smartasses. Very common in mmo communities. Probably because in real life they get punched in the face.

What do I really hate when it comes to MMO community and forums? Sarcastic people. You wouldn't know if what do they like, and yeah, those hot headed posters, like just for a simplest mistake you do they'll do something about it, I also like to add in those flamers.

    Ayt~

very specific type of posters, they are not many but easy to spot.

Basically, they are most probably an employee of a game-company. They senselessy promote their games in all sort of threads. In other words, advertisement of games under a forum account which  they are trying to pass as a usual-gamer-account. I know they are just a small annoyance mostly, but still

I hate the fact that I probably got reported for trolling by trolls.

I agree with alot of the posts in this thread.  That being said I don't like it when you are new to a game and when you ask a legitimate question in community chat or better yet a help chat you are screamed at by the majority of the game community.  Excuse me but that is the reason for a help chat, also not everyone in the game knows how to play it, I wish people would remember that they too were once newbie players.

I also don't like this new trend of grouping or adding members to a guild by class specification.  An example is; You just start playing a new game, you pick your class because it's interesting to you and as you begin playing you find it's definitely the class for you.  Now as you're leveling you find you need to group to do certain quests and when you try to get into a group you are shunned because of your class.  Same with those who are campaigning for new members in their guild and they specifically say , " Guild XYZ is looking for new members, you must be level such and such, no Rogues allowed."  I find this sort of thing to be really terrible.  No one should be shunned for chosing a class they like.  Not everyone wants to be a healer type or a tank type etc.  Every class in a game is there for a reason.  The players that number crunch and then actively post that said class is useless really mess up the game for those playing that class.  Guilds should accept members by personality more then their class.  I personally would rather play along side someone I get along with then say a total jerk who is playing a class that is more needed in the group.  I realize that in most cases if you need a healer you have to wait until one is able to join the group before heading out on a certain quest or dungeon, I get that.  But to automatically deny someone grouping because they are a less popular class even though you have room for them is just sad.  I'd much rather have a person in my group who knows how to play their class then someone who doesn't but chose the class because they will always be invited into the groups.

When I see someone in Warhammer (or similar games) say "go back to WoW carebear". I mean it cracks me up but the irony is just mind-numbing.

Most online communities suck one way or another. But if you don't take it seriously or let yourself get trolled, they aren't that bad.
